The images show some 3,700 structures damaged or destroyed in Baga and Doron Baga this month, Amnesty said. Nigeria's government has disputed reports that as many as 2,000 were killed, putting the toll at just 150. Amnesty cited witnesses saying that militants had killed indiscriminately. It said the damage was "catastrophic". There has been a surge in violence linked to Boko Haram. In the past week there have been several attacks, including by suspected child suicide bombers. Nigeria is to hold elections next month, amid growing doubts whether they can successfully go ahead in all parts of the country. 'Wiped off the map' Amnesty said the attack on Baga and Doron Baga, neighbouring towns in the far north-east of Nigeria, was the largest and deadliest Boko Haram assault that it had analysed. It said about 620 structures had been destroyed in Baga, and more than 3,100 in Doro Baga. The before and after satellite images were taken on 2 January and 7 January. "These detailed images show devastation of catastrophic proportions in two towns, one of which was almost wiped off the map in the space of four days," Daniel Eyre, an Amnesty researcher, said in a statement. "It represents a deliberate attack on civilians whose homes, clinics and schools are now burnt out ruins," he said. The BBC's Will Ross says that while the images show the destructive nature of Boko Haram, they do not help establish just how many people were killed. Last week, Musa Alhaji Bukar, a senior government official in the area, said that fleeing residents told him that Baga, which had a population of about 10,000, was now "virtually non-existent". "It has been burnt down," he told the BBC Hausa service. Amnesty's Adotei Akwei told the BBC that although it was still difficult to access the area where the attack took place, the Nigerian government was "grossly understating" the death toll. "They killed so many people," one man told the group. "I saw maybe around 100 killed at that time in Baga. I ran to the bush. As we were running, they were shooting and killing."

The wives of nineteen governors in the northern half of Nigeria yesterday donated food and other relief materials to internally displaced people in Borno State. The chairperson of the Northern Governors wives, Yemisi Gabriel Suswam, led the other wives to Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, to present the food and relief materials worth N40 million. Mrs. Suswam said she and the other wives were in Borno to contribute their “widow’s mite” in order to alleviate the suffering of the internally displaced persons at a most difficult time. “We are here at the Maiduguri State capital to commiserate with the good people of Borno and the northeast over the persistent destruction of lives and properties, and also to offer their widow's mite towards alleviating the sufferings of the IDPs in various camps across the state capital,” she said. Mrs. Suswam added that the items were bought from the proceeds of sales of Governors’ Wives Almanac that was launched last year. In her response, Mrs. Nana Kashim Shettima, the wife of Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State, praised the governors’ wives for their humanitarian gesture. She thanked them for their concern and boldness in defying all security threats to come to Maiduguri to present the relief materials. Mrs. Shettima also assured the donors that the state government would do a good job of distributing the donated relief materials to the internally displaced people affected by incessant attacks by Islamist insurgents all over the state and in the northeast. There are numerous camps for the displaced people throughout Maiduguri. |
Twenty two ships laden with petroleum products and food items have arrived the Lagos ports, the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) said on Wednesday in Lagos. The NPA made this known in its daily publication, ‘Shipping Position’. It said that 10 of the ships sailed in with petrol, base oil and diesel, while 12 were laden with food items such as frozen fish, rice and other general cargo. The NPA said that 46 ships would be expected in the ports from Jan. 14 to Jan. 31. According to the NPA, 21 of the expected ships will arrive with containers, while 12 will sail in with food products. It said that general cargo would arrive in seven ships, while a ship would sail in with vehicle. The authority added that five ships would arrive at the ports with petrol, aviation fuel, diesel and bulk coal. (NAN) |
The ranks of the Peoples Democratic Party in the House of Representatives further depleted on Wednesday as eight more members defected from the majority party. Four of the defectors joined the rival All Progressives Congress. The All Progressives Grand Alliance gained two of the defectors, while the Peoples Democratic Movement and the Social Democratic Party each gained one, bringing the total PDP defectors on Wednesday to eight. All the members either cited dissatisfaction with the conduct of the party’s last primaries or divisions in its fold as reasons for their decision to abandon the PDP. The four who defected to APC were Garba Ulma, Zakari Ibrahim, Ibrahim Kamba and Abdulmalik Cheche. Wilson Nathaniel joined the SDP, while Tony Madwatte and Nwogbo defected to PDM and APGA respectively. Another member, Mr. Benjamin Aboho, defected to APGA, while Mr. Forte Dike left APGA for APC. Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Victor Ogene, also made his defection from APGA to the APC official on Wednesday. By Ogene’s defection, both the chairman (Mr. Zakari Mohammed) and deputy chairman of the House committee on Media and Public Affairs are now members of the APC. The party alone gained six out of the total of 10 lawmakers, who changed political parties on Wednesday. The defection reduced the numerical strength of the PDP to around 182 members, while the APC rose from about 154 to 158 members. The SDP suddenly jumped to the third largest party in the House with 10 members. Labour Party has about three members, while APGA has two members and Accord Party, one. Meanwhile, the House further amended the Electoral Act 2010 on Wednesday to make a provision empowering the Independent National Electoral Commission to ensure that Internally Displaced Persons would vote at elections held during emergencies. The amendment to the Act, which passed third reading on Wednesday, was a response to INEC’s stance that there was no legal backing for it to guarantee voting opportunities for the IDPS during next month’s general elections. The amendment added a new clause to the existing Section 26 of the Principal Act, giving INEC powers to make provision for the voting rights of the IDPs. It was proposed by a PDP lawmaker from Taraba State, Mr. Albert Tsam-Tsokwa. The amendment received unanimous approval by members and was passed along with the new Electoral Act. However, the House and the Senate will still meet in conference to harmonise any differences that may appear in their respective versions of the new law. The Lagos State Police Command on Wednesday said it recovered a human head in olokodana junction in Ebute-Meta area of Lagos. NAN reports that the lifeless head was said to have been dropped by unknown persons in the early hours of Wednesday. According to Nwosu, the head belonging to a male has been deposited in the morgue at Yaba General Hospital, Lagos. “’Efforts are being made to apprehend the perpetrators of the act. “’The murder case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti for further investigation. “’We urge the members of the public not to hesitate to give the police any useful information they have on the incident,” he said.
