The Lagos State Government on Monday took a swipe at President Goodluck Jonathan and Vice-President Namadi Sambo, for “ running a presidency without any legacy.” This was contained in a statement by the Special Adviser to the state on Information and Strategy, Dr. Lateef Raji, which was issued in reaction to a comment credited to the vice-president last week. The vice-president had last week remarked that the residents of the state “are leaving for neighbouring states in droves as a consequence of heavy tax regime” imposed by the state government. But the statement noted that history would not forgive both Jonathan and Sambo for running a full course of four-year presidency without any legacy, citing diverse economic and security crises Nigeria had been facing under the Jonathan administration. It said: “If they lack the capacity to contend with other complex challenges confronting the country, they do not have to be geniuses to plant a block of classroom or a paediatric ward in each of Nigeria’s public primary schools or general hospitals in the remaining five months of their tenure to at least appease yet impressionable children.” The statement defended the state’s tax regime, which it said had positioned the state as “the economic and social hub of not just Nigeria, but West Africa and which continues to attract an inflow of people like the bee to the honey, in pursuit of their means of livelihood daily. “It is no surprise at all that the steadfastness that the state government has brought to the management of its internally generated revenue and the attendant improved and consistent performance over the years will continue to be mind boggling for all those who do not appreciate the need to move from the past and adopt innovations in order to improve the lot of the society. “For whatever it is worth, Sambo deserves to be pitied. If his itinerary coming on this trip in an election year had included the inspection, not even commissioning, of any ongoing ambitious projects initiated for the good of the people of the state, he may have been better preoccupied and avoided the gaffe. “It will be good to share with him and his fellows a simple narrative of what was done differently in Lagos State. It is never too late to learn. The state government had for long realised that the state, with its enormous social and economic potentials, cannot continue to depend on the allocation from the Federation Accounts if it must deliver on the popular expectations.” The statement urged the presidency to lesson from the measures, which it said, were then introduced “to drive efficiency in the tax assessment and collection regimes by effectively plugging loopholes and leakages in the system. The result was the leap in the accruable to the coffers of the state government. “With this enhanced revenue profile, the government embarked on ambitious infrastructure upgrade to meet the critical areas of need like never experienced before. At any given time, not less than 200 roads, not leaving out those of the federal government, are being executed. “The state government is not just doing it on the tube and the press; the testimonials abound all over the state for the people to see, feel and put to use. Without doubt, Sambo himself would have, during this visit, marvelled at the new look of Lagos even if he moved around all of his time in the city flying in a helicopter.” The statement urged the federal government to learn lessons from the state’s tax efficiency, which it said, could help bring the country from her myriad of socio-economic challenges she had been facing. It added that if the presidency could summon the will power to rein in its members and ensure that oil receipts and accruals from other revenue heads “are properly accounted for and remitted to the Federation Accounts, Nigeria will be better and the citizens will be happy. “If the federal government had avoided situations where individuals present claims in billions of hard-earned money spent on hotel accommodation, air travels and all other such excesses in diversion of public funds, the Nigerian economy would not be in the sorry state it is today and we would all have been better for it. Nigerians would have been better secured and the people would feel the presence of government even in the remotest part of the country.” Source: http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/lasg-jonathan-sambo-running-presidency-without-legacy/197973/ |
Lagos State Deputy Governor, Mrs. Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, has drawn the attention of the public to some fraudulent e-mail messages in her name. She said the messages were soliciting for financial assistance from those on her mailing list. A statement by her Special Assistant on Media, Mr. ‘Tunde Abatan, said: “While the deputy governor is aware of this development and has alerted relevant security agencies, it is pertinent to remind the general public, especially those who are yet to receive such e-mails that the deputy governor does not operate any email that is addressed as jokeadefuliire@yahoo.com (kindly note the ‘double i’ in the address) and any e-mail from this address or any other purportedly seeking assistance on behalf of the deputy governor should be ignored.”

The All Progressives Congress in Rivers State has taken a swipe at the critics of the State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, who accused him of funding the party at the national level. The state chapter of APC described the claim as lacking in foundation and a figment of the imagination of the governor’s critics, adding that the allegation was based on mere suspicion as a result of the key role the governor has been playing in the party. State Chairman of the APC, Chief Davies Ikanya, said on Monday in a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Public Affairs, Chukwuemeka Eze, that the APC remained a political party too big to be funded by the state. “This is a rumour without foundation and a figment of the imagination of those who invented it. It is based on mere suspicion because of the key role that Governor Amaechi has been playing in repositioning APC to salvage Nigeria from the savage grip of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party. “As rightly stated by Governor Amaechi on Monday, during the APC Port Harcourt flag-off rally, APC is a very big party to be funded from the purse of the Rivers State Government,” Ikanya, said. Ikanya pointed out that the state did not have the huge sum of money those behind the rumour claimed the governor had spent on the APC at the national level. “Rivers is not the richest state in either the country or the APC, it is not. For example, is there anywhere as rich as Lagos, which is an APC state, and very much committed to the progress of the party? “The truth is that no single state or individual is funding APC; the party is funded by all its committed members,” the state party chairman said. Ikanya stated that much of Rivers money had been taken away by the PDP-controlled Federal Government through declining monthly allocation and the ceding of some of the state’s oil wells to neighbouring Abia and Bayelsa States.” The state APC chairman, however, congratulated Amaechi for putting smiles on the faces of civil servants in Rivers by paying their December salaries before Christmas, “thereby shaming detractors who thought that he would not be able to pay due to the economic emasculation of the state by the PDP-led Federal Government.” Source: http://www.punchng.com/news/apc-blasts-amaechis-critics-over-funding/ |

A former governor of Rivers State, Dr. Peter Odili, has expressed regret that he supported Mr. Rotimi Amaechi to become the governor of the state in 2007. Odili said Amaechi dismantled the structure of the Peoples Democratic Party through his (Amaechi) defection to the All Progressives Congress. He explained that but for the quick intervention of the former Minister of State for Education and PDP governorship candidate in Rivers State, Chief Nyesom Wike, the party would have gone into oblivion. The ex-governor, who spoke on Saturday during Wike’s campaign tour in Ndoni Local Government Area, said Amaechi worked against the PDP structures put in place by the founding fathers of the party. Odili pointed out that the PDP in the past, supported Amaechi’s political career with good intentions, adding that he and the PDP had accepted their mistake and were poised to correct it in 2015. It was the first time the former governor would be speaking publicly on the strained relationship between him and the incumbent governor, who was the Speaker of the state House of Assembly for eight years when Odili was the governor. He said, “We thought we did the right thing by supporting Amaechi to become the governor of the state. We left a united state; we also left a united party; PDP was one, Rivers State was PDP. “There was no other party in Rivers State other than the PDP. Whatever the party hierarchy said would happen happened. The secretary is here to support what I am telling you here today. “With all the best intentions, we supported his political career and ambition. We thought we did what was best for the state. As you know, until a man has power and has money, you don’t really know him. “One thing is clear; we have accepted our mistake and we are determined to correct it in 2015. Who would have thought that a governor, who won an election on the platform of the PDP would defect with the mandate of the party to another party? “Who would have thought that a governor elected on the platform of the PDP will abandon the PDP to join an opposition party? The elders of the party, who are here, can corroborate what I am saying here today. We ran a cohesive party. We had respect for the elders of the party. We had respect for party members.” Sauce: http://www.punchng.com/news/i-regret-supporting-amaechi-to-become-gov-odili/ |

A human rights lawyer and activist, Olatunji Abayomi, has demanded a retraction of a report against the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Asiwaju Bola Tinubu by an online journal, Sahara Reporters titled: “Threat of perjury trial: How Jonathan Blackmailed Bola Tinubu before 2011 Presidential election”. In his letter, Abayomi argued that the report is not only false, but defamatory. “We demand a statement acknowledging your error of trying to damage our client’s reputation as well as a statement regretting the same. “Please this matter must be attended to immediately otherwise you run the risk of multiple civil suits all over the world in defence of our client, “Abayomi wrote. The lawyer said the report attempted to defame Tinubu’s reputation by spreading old, utterly false gossip in hope of wrongly destroying his prospects. Sahara Reporters, he said, failed to inquire diligently about Tinubu’s educational records to know that he was an award-winning alumnus of the Chicago State University. Also, there was no charge at the Federal High Court numbered FHC/ABJ/CR/04/2011, nor was Tinubu tried or convicted. Besides, Abayomi noted that the United States Embassy, in its February 4, 2003 response to an inquiry by the Inspector-General of Police, stated that there is “no criminal arrest, records, wants or warrants for Bola Ahmed Tinubu.” “If you had checked readily available records, you would have found that he travels periodically to the United States. Had he been engaged in criminal wrongdoing, he would have been ineligible for entry into that country,” Abayomi wrote. Abayomi also recalled that the Code of Conduct charge against Tinubu was dismissed. “Sahara Reporters appears to have surrendered itself to propagate old allegations to serve the same old failing antagonists who can find no serious grounds beyond their noisy interests,” the lawyer added. Industry leaders from Africa and across the globe have identified technology as a major factor that would enhance food production, health facilities, water production and other things that would improve the standard of living of the people. They stated that technology is something nice to have in every country as its usage has helped to improve businesses and the wellbeing of the people. Rising from the Huawei Western Europe CIO Forum 2014 in Amsterdam, recently, where they discussed the challenges facing people, businesses and cities as they enter a new, more connected technology age. In a keynote speech on the topic of Smart Cities, Ger Baron, CTO of the City of Amsterdam said: “We have passed the moment that technology is something nice to have, technology nowadays plays a role in our food production, our water management and health care, the way we organize our private lives and the way we learn. This means that cities need to re-think their role and adapt to what is needed after this third industrial revolution” Welcoming the audience to the CIO Forum, Kajsa Ollongren, Alderman for Economic Affairs and Deputy Mayor of Amsterdam discussed the transition to becoming a smart city: “Amsterdam’s ambition is to establish itself as a city with the best health care facilities, cleaner air, lower energy usage, reduced motor vehicle traffic and to promote an open flow of information between the government, companies and citizens. Our connectivity is enormously helpful in achieving such goals.”This follows an agreement signed in October between the City of Amsterdam, Amsterdam ArenA and Huawei to jointly cooperate on the development of the smart city and smart stadium concept. Kevin Tao, President, Huawei Western Europe said: “The digital world and physical world are converging, ICT systems are transforming from supporting systems to value-generating systems, bringing dramatic changes to our daily lives and our business. Europe is the leading ICT market and our customers are full of innovative ideas. As a strategic partner, Huawei is committed to continuous innovation based on customers’ demand as well as joint innovation in collaboration with them. We consistently invest in big data, Software Defined Network (SDN) and wireless network technologies with the aim of helping our clients achieve business success and building a better connected world with our partners and customers” Dr. Christoph Steiger, Vice President, Head of SAP Business Transformation Services EMEA, highlighted that complexity is one of the biggest concerns of today’s businesses. “The explosion of data, driven by the internet of things and social media is even deepening this concern Companies need to master the skill to de-complex decision making, simplify business processes and rationalize technologies to be successful in the future market place. In addition, new, disruptive technologies such as Big Data and Cloud allow companies to develop new business models and generate competitive advantage – if they manage the innovation and the transformation aspect properly.” The Huawei Western Europe CIO Forum brought together over 300 customers, partners and industry professionals from across Western Europe to share experiences and engage in discussion about the changing nature of IT and how to make a better connected, technologically-enabled future a reality. The event programmer included speakers from key Huawei partners and customers as well as leading industry figures from the City of Amsterdam, Amsterdam ArenA stadium, the European Commission, SAP, Imperial College London and KPMG |
