Setting up a new blog or website using can be done within a few minutes. Hosting your own wordpress blog or website using the tools available from wordpress. org is a slightly more in-depth process but once the setup is done, managing the blog or website using any computer’s web browser, or your tablet (with a specialised app) is a straightforward process.

On the left side of the main wordpress app screen is the main menu. From there, you can explore the wordpress blogosphere using the app’s reader, read notifi cations and manage various aspects of your own blog/website. For example, to create a new post from scratch, tap the add Post (plus sign shaped) icon displayed near the bottom of this listing and to edit an existing post, tap on the posts menu option. Inserting digital photos, video clips, audio clips, graphics, or other content can be done using one of the command icons displayed near the bottom-right corner of the new post screen. To preview your post before publishing it, tap the preview icon which allows you to access and edit details related to the post, such as its status, visibility, and post format. It is also possible to select a time/date when a newly created post will be published.

Once an entry is created and formatted on your tablet, press the publish button to publish the content online within your blog or website. This process happens in a matter of seconds, depending on the speed of your Internet connection.

Another useful set of tools built into the wordpress app allows you to monitor real-time blog/website traffi c by tapping on the status menu option. With this you will be able to determine how many people have viewed your blog in a particular day, week, or month, discover what countries your visitors are from, what content they viewed, and what search engine and keyword(s) were used to fi nd your content.

If you have been thinking of becoming a blogger or want to manage a new website, the wordpress platform offers you several advantages by helping you to become a mobile blogger whereby you would be able to manage all aspects of your blog/website on the go using this specialised iphone/ipad app.
PoliticsRe: Mararaba Gurku, Community Where Residents Sleep With Eyes Open by MRLINGTON(op): 9:21am On Dec 14, 2014
A security expert, Mike Bamgboye, who also lives in mararaba said, “I have been living in mararaba for five years and I can attest to the fact that crime has really increased here. Women handbags are snatched in the night, motorists, who keep their phones carelessly in the traffic lose them to petty thieves while driving. Robbers enter through windows in the night and point their guns and tell you to give them anything you have and sometimes, it could be as low as one thousand naira (#1000). I believe that the major reason for the increase is Over population. Since El- Rufai, the former FCT minister demolished small settlements in the city centre, most people came to places like mararaba to live and because they lost their petty businesses, houses and life, they resort to a life of criminality. Most of the boys that do these things are into it for money, anger, envy or vengeance, the decay of family values, and the desire for control. In some cases, poverty contributes to robbery because people find it easier or quicker to steal than to go through the process of getting a job. Because of the type of people that live there, children are exposed to violence and this makes them to grow up anger. Possible starvation would force many people to steal in order to survive. Some person steal so that they can be cool in front of their friends while for many others, it is because of deprivation. Some others do it because they believe they can take someone else’s money than have to earn their own. But the truth is that people often steal because they feel insecure”, he explained.

An islamic cleric, Mallam Yahaya Sani, who had lived in Mararaba before moving to Lugbe because of the incessant hold up, stated that, “We do not deny the fact that poverty causes many crimes to be committed but Almighty Allah (S.w.T.) says in Surah al-Mā’ida 5:38-39 “And (as for) the man who steals and the woman who steals, cut off their hands as a punishment for what they have earned, an exemplary punishment from Allah, and Allah is mighty wise. But whoever repents after his iniquity and reforms (himself), then surely Allah will turn to him (mercifully), surely Allah is forgiving, merciful”. “When a minor child steals for the first and the second time he is forgiven. If he does it for the third time, he is issued a strict warning and beating. If he persists in his crime, the tips of his fingers are slightly cut and if he repeats the act, some more of his fingers are cut away”. The thief must be sane. So, if an insane person robs, his hand is not amputated. He may be suitably warned. It is important that the government provide the youth with suitable employment. Most of them resort to crime because of joblessness and hunger”.

Pastor Dan Abunkwu of Bible Faith Alive Synagogue of Christ stated that firstly, we have to accept that God specifically forbids stealing in (Exodus 20:15). Even though Proverbs 6:30 says, “Men do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy his hunger when he is starving. Yet, it immediately adds that if he is caught he will have to pay it back sevenfold (6:31). So the only time stealing can be tolerated is when you are desperately in need. But we must understand it is it is still not right, and God does not condones it”.

PoliticsMararaba Gurku, Community Where Residents Sleep With Eyes Open by MRLINGTON(op): 9:20am On Dec 14, 2014
Mararaba Gurku is a settlement along Abuja Keffi highway in Nasarawa State mostly occupied by low income earners. It is an example of a slum with all the social problems in society. Ruth Choji writes

Residents of Mararaba Gurku in Nassarawa State are complaining of increase in armed robbery cases and other social vices. The area is an example of urban slum located along Abuja-Keffi express way in Karu local government area. It is estimated that this settlement has a rough population estimate of over three million people who are mostly low income earners and civil servants working of the lower cadre working in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Others include trader, prostitutes and of course criminals. Mararaba Gurku is best known for its local setting depicted in bad roads, violence and other criminal activities like prostitutions, illicit drugs users, alcoholic joints, robbery and other societal ills.

A resident, Chinedu Okegbuike, who spoke with LEADERSHIP Sunday said, “Right now, we sleep with one eye open. Thieves strike at any time of the day by knocking on gates the way visitors would and when you open, they will point their guns and collect any money they can lay their hands on. They have visited me thrice and on each occasion, I gave them 10,000, 8,000 and 5,000 naira respectively. The last one they came was in the morning when my wife was getting the children ready for school and I was still in bed; my brother opened the gate for them and when they came in, they gently told them to call me or collect the money for them as if they gave me some money to keep for them. We have reported it to the police several times, but no one has been arrested. Other residents close to us have also experienced similar attacks. We used to contribute money monthly for vigilantes, yet thieves still come to attack us”, he lamented.

Another resident, who has been robbed a couple of times, is Mrs Dorcas Tumkat, an indigene of Plateau State. She had lived there for nine years. According to her, “Armed robbery started a few years back because when I moved here to be with my husband, things were better; the place was not as choked up as it is now. Our house has been attacked three times with one of our neighbors wounded in the process because he wanted to fight them. One of them stabbed him with a big cutlass. The thieves are young boys who come in groups so that residents cannot even defend themselves. Sometimes, they carry food they see in the kitchen. At one time, they visited my neighbour and ate the food they had just prepared for dinner as well as the bread the husband bought. Our fear is that the day they will come and not get anything, they are likely to rape our daughters or kill somebody. The police won’t do anything even if you report to them. We even suspect the police of connivance with them sometimes, because how can a thief come to your house in broad daylight and ask for money and walk out with impunity? They always warn us that if we shout, they will go and come back and kill us and nothing will happen. When they come in the night, it is the worst because of lack of electricity, so, everybody’s generator will be on and because of the noise, they take their time and do anything they want and go unchallenged”, she narrated.

Although the chief of Mararaba Gurku, HRH Gambo Allayayi said he is not liable to talk on the issue, a member of the palace stated that there is no town or society without thieves, but stated that in their own case, the state government is doing everything in its power to stop the crime.

A police officer who doesn’t want his name in print told LEADERSHIP Sunday saying, “We are aware of the increase in crime, but the truth is that, most of it is committed by young boys living in the area who are mostly drug addicts. They do it just   to get a little amount of money for their addiction. Even when we arrest them, we end up releasing them because how many will you send to prison? Most times, their parents come to bail them out and then they will continue again. We encourage this neighborhood vigilante. Besides, the police don’t have enough men to police the whole of mararaba; the place is big and houses are built without proper planning. There are some places that you can’t assess with a car because of the way the houses are and then most of the people living here are poor. The thieves know that and that is why they steal anything they can lay their hands on"

Business2015: Capital Market Registrars Seek Strict Implementation Of Austerity Measures by MRLINGTON(op): 8:34am On Dec 14, 2014
The Institute of Capital Market Registrars (ICMR) on Saturday said there would be hard times in the equities market in 2015 unless the Federal Government ensures strict implementation of the austerity measures.

The ICMR Registrar/Chief Executive Officer, Dr David Ogogo, spoke in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

Ogogo predicted that the equities market would be turbulent in 2015 because of persistent drop in crude oil price at the global market. He said the government should ensure full implementation of its austerity measures to cushion the effect of the oil price fall on the economy and as well boost investors’ confidence.

NAN reports that the Federal Government had, on Nov. 16, announced a package of austerity measures as part of fiscal adjustments designed to mitigate the negative impact of lower global oil prices on the Nigerian economy.

Minister of Finance, and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, said the belt tightening initiative was the first of other policies that the government intends to implement if the fall in oil prices persists.

Among the austerity measures is the restriction on foreign travel by public officials. Henceforth, foreign trips will be permitted only when they become compellingly, while local travel will also be curtailed drastically. Okonjo-Iweala said the measures would not affect salaries of public sector workers and key initiatives in education, health and other critical areas vital to the development of the country.

According to Ogogo, the capital market will experience a little growth in 2015 if the measures are implemented rigorously. He said the market performance in 2015 would depend on the developments in the crude oil market, due to dominance of foreign investors in the Nigerian capital market.

Ogogo said there was a need for the country to diversify in its economy and not to focus attention on only oil production. He called for more support for the non-oil sector to enable it to contribute effectively to the growth of the economy.  The registrar said the institute would embark on more public enlightenment programmes in 2015 to address the issue of unclaimed dividends in the Nigerian capital market.

Ogogo said ICMR’s major aim was to reduce the quantum of unclaimed dividend in the market. He said investors should embrace the e-dividend platform introduced by the Securities and Exchange Commission by giving their account details to their various registrars.

PoliticsSome Senior Lawyers Behind Corruption In Judiciary —CJN by MRLINGTON(op): 12:54am On Dec 08, 2014
The Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, has alleged that some senior lawyers are behind the increased level of corruption bedevilling the judiciary.
The CJN, who made the allegation when the leadership of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, led by its National President, Chief Augustine Alegeh, SAN, paid him a courtesy visit at the weekend, insisted that corrupt politicians often use lawyers to tempt judges with bribes.
He maintained that some lawyers not only aid, but equally abet corruption within the Bench, a situation he said portends danger for the justice system in the country.
Therefore, the CJN tasked the NBA to put in more effort towards purging itself of ‘some corrupt elements’ within its fold.
Other Justices of the Supreme Court that joined the CJN to receive the visitor were Justices Mohammed Tanko Ibrahim, John Fabiyi, and Bode Rhodes-Vivour.
Addressing the delegation, the CJN vowed to re-invigorate the judicial cleansing process that was commenced by his predecessors, decrying that lawyers have so far acted as clog to the process of weeding out corrupt judges from the Bench.
He said senior lawyers were usually the first people to rush to court to secure an order of injunction restraining the National Judicial Council, NJC, from investigating judges that acted wrongly.
He said: “I want to use this opportunity to urge the Bar to put the interest of the system far and above the individuals. Imagine this scenario; you in the Bar decry the ‘rots’ on the Bench, calling for disciplining and cleansing of the judiciary by weeding out the bad eggs on the Bench.
“Yet, you are the first to jump to the court to seek restraining order on NJC to stop it from the investigation and trial of a judge based on a petition brought against the judge before the council. How then is the principle of fair hearing sustained?”

On Rivers Judiciary
More so, the CJN urged the NBA to intervene and find a solution to the protracted impasse that has left the Rivers State Judiciary without a substantive Chief Judge for so many months now.
“The perpetual closure of court in River State is unacceptable. NJC has never said governors cannot appoint state Chief Judges.
“But the violation of the principle of checks and balances by state governor in Rivers State as enshrined in the constitution for the appointment and disciplining of erring Chief Judges or Judges is equally unacceptable. Seniority is part and parcel of the legal profession.”

PoliticsNigerian Military Releases Detained Russian Cargo Plane by MRLINGTON(op): 12:38am On Dec 08, 2014
The Nigerian military has released the detained Russian cargo plane which they seized yesterday morning after France admitted ownership of the aircraft.
It said that the flight was covered by a diplomatic clearance given by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja, noting that the Autonov 124 Russian commercial plane was forced to land at the Kano airport because of dense air traffic at Ndjamena airport, Chad.

A statement from the French Ambassador to Nigeria, Jacques Champagne de Labriolle, on Sunday, stated that the Antonov plane had to divert to an alternate international airport and the  closest airport facility being Kano, the Russian crew decided to fly there, to refuel, and to take off again to reach Njamena Airport.

He denied that the plane was carrying arms and ammunition, stressing that it was conveying two light Gazelle helicopters, spare parts and maintenance items belonging to the French Army.
Labriolle further explained that due to the nationality of the aircraft, and the nature of the cargo, airport authorities in Kano, decided to check the flight plan, the clearance and the cargo manifest before authorizing the plane to leave.
