Billions of dollars stashed away in foreign bank accounts by the late military dictator, Gen. Sani Abacha, may far exceed the already established $5 billion, as a Special Investigation Panel (SIP), tracing what has now become ‘Abacha loot,’ has stumbled on fresh clues indicating that the stolen funds still trapped in offshore accounts stand at over N3.2 trillion.
A competent source close to the panel, whose office is in the presidency told Saturday Sun that about four different meetings between the SIP team headed by a retired senior military officer and a Switzerland-based lawyer, Enrico Monfrini, hired by the Federal Government to assist in the recovery of the Abacha loot in foreign jurisdictions, had taken place outside the country in the last eight months.

The Federal Government of Nigeria is scrapping the National Examinations Council, NECO, and the National Poverty Eradication Programme, NAPEP among other government agencies. It is also stripping the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board of powers to conduct examinations into tertiary institutions in the country.

The government is taking the decision in order to streamline agencies of government and reduce the cost of governance, based on recommendations of the Steve Oronsaye Panel Report on the reform of government agencies and ministries.

Mr Oronsaye who was the former Head of the Civil Service of the Federation recommended the abolition of 38 agencies, merger of 52 and reversal of 14 to departments in ministries.

It was a moment of joy recently for the mother of a prison inmate that had been awaiting trial since 2005. Mrs. Maria Emmanuel danced and shouted with joy on the court premises of the Lagos High Court, sitting in Igbosere when Justice Deborah Oluwayemi released her son, Paul Samuel.

A domestic worker from Gwabalanda suburb in Bulawayo was caught sucking blood from the nose of her employer’s four-year-old child.

The mother revealed that she got a tip-off from her neighbour after she had heard her child screaming in pain at the same time everyday. Sinanzeni Moyo, employed as a baby-sitter, had worked for the woman for two months.

A man will live to curse the day he decided to romp with a woman other than his wife following a series of ‘manhood disappearances’ whenever he gets ready to make love at home.

Phbion Mutize, a Zimbabwean, has been living with his ‘condition’ for the past four months. The situation has become so bad that his wife has forced him out of their home.

“I am almost a destitute now. I haven’t had a decent bath for the past two months. My wife doesn’t want to see me at home because she consulted a trusted herbalist in town with the intention of helping me only to be told that I slept with a married woman. She meant well when she consulted the traditional healer but she discovered I betrayed her trust,” Mutize related his ordeal.

Asked if it was true that he slept with a fenced woman, Mutize said his situation was a pity because the woman whom he had a stint with was denying being protected by supernatural means.

“I had a stint with a married woman. I tried talking to her over the issue and she denied being protected. I can’t approach her husband because he might react badly and harm me together with his wife.” he said refusing to name the woman.

Mutize has tried getting help from traditional healers but he said none of them have managed to salvage him of his predicament.

“Most traditional healers that I have consulted so far have told me that this type of mystery is synonymous with men from my area,” he said.

When reached for comment, his wife, Edith, refused to talk about the issue but chose to throw vitriol at her husband.

“He is a joke of the town. I think he should concentrate on solving the problem than shouting it all over town,” she said.

A resident at the plots said sometime last week the couple became a public spectacle when they exchanged harsh words in public. The man reportedly had gone to beg for his wife’s mercy. Instead of buying her husband’s ordeal, the wife is said to have run amok threatening to assault Mutize who then walked away in disgrace,” sources claimed.

Pope Benedict’s elder brother, the Rev. Georg Ratzinger has given insight into why the coveted position of Catholic Pontiff may elude Africa as the Church begins the process of appointing a new pope. Much speculation has focused on whether Benedict’s successor might come from Africa or Latin America, rather than Europe, where Roman Catholic congregations are shrinking.

The pope’s brother, the Rev. Georg Ratzinger, speaking in Regensburg, Germany, said he expected to see a pope chosen from outside Europe one day but not just yet.

“I’m certain a pope will come from the new continents but whether it will be now, I have my doubts,” he said.

“In Europe, we have many very able people, and the Africans are still not so well known and maybe do not have the experience yet.”

Among those considered frontrunners for the role are Cardinal Angelo Scola, archbishop of Milan; Canadian Cardinal Marc Ouellet, who heads the Vatican’s office of bishops; Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, an Argentinian, Cardinal Peter Turkson of Ghana and Cardinal Francis Arinze of Nigeria.

February 14 is an interesting date in the world today. While various stories trail this date, it is agreed by a majority to be a day of showing love either to that special one, friend or family.
