It is no longer news that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has been on strike since July 1st 2013, something they termed “Total, indefinite and comprehensive” over the Federal Government inability to honor an agreement it willingly entered into with the union in 2009 and also a Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) in 2012 which has forced millions of great Nigerian Students to sit at home for the past three months simply because her ivory towers of learning have been under lock and key.

Various personalities like Traditional Rulers, Preachers of the Gospel of God, Lawmakers, NGO’s, individuals and even our own dear President of the Federation have pleaded with ASUU to call of its strike for the interest of her students but all to no avail and this has now prompted me to realize the simple facts that the union’s current struggle for better funding in our educational sector is indeed justifiable.

It is pertinent to note that ASUU is fighting to correct the neglect and the deteriorating state of infrastructure which has made the environment of learning in our universities not conducive not just for students but their teachers. Taking an holistic view of both our Federal and State tertiary institutions in Nigeria, one would be convinced at a glance that our schools are indeed lagging in terms of basic amenities, no wonder it is worthy of note that none of her universities is ranked among the best 5,000 tertiary institutions in the world.

Like the popular adage that says” When two elephant fights the ground suffers” that is to say here. Categorically that since the inception of this face-off between ASUU and the Federal Government, the students whom the same government regarded as the leaders of tomorrow has been at the receiving end and I have asked myself, “Do we (students) continue to bear the brunt for government’s insincerity and ineptitude? The big answer is NO and this is why ASUU is saying “ENOUGH is ENOUGH” and it is either the Government make things right in her education sector now or mar it forever because government continuous reneges on the agreement it consciously entered with ASUU has been responsible for the incessant strike actions embarked upon by the union over the years which has made many students spend more than the stipulated duration of time on a particular course of study to the detriment of rich citizens who can afford quality education for their wards either in a privately owned university or abroad.

However, without bias, let me ideologically and unequivocally state that ASUU should re-consider its stand and shift ground not only for its students but the economy in general.

It is also imperative to note that education is not the only sector that needs urgent intervention by government as there are others like aviation, health and security challenges which the Government urgently needs to tackle.

Before I drop my pen, let me remind ASUU/FG that “DIALOGUE” is the fastest way to resolve this impasse which has crippled academic activities in our universities for over the past three months.

N.B: The Federal Government should know that education is the bedrock of any nation most especially the developing ones. Enough commitment must be shown by government so as to improve the standard of research and learning rather than expend on frivolities or things that are less important to its growth and stability. This is why government should as a matter of urgency seek for a lasting solution to resolved its issues with ASUU so that academic activities could go back to normalcy for the benefits of the economy and its citizens at large.

THE strike action embarked upon by university lecturers has assumed another dimension as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has been dragged before the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN) over the lingering strike action.

The suit, with the number NICW/Abj/242/2013 which also has ministers of labour and productivity, education, finance and justice, as well as secretary to the government of the federation as defendants, was instituted by the registered trustees of Golden Women of Integrity and Vision Association and Mrs. Florence Uche Ojieh.

In the suit, the claimants are asking the court to determine whether the strike action embarked upon by ASUU is not illegal and contrary to law and whether members of the union are not bound by the policy of ‘no work no pay’ and therefore not entitled to their salary during the period of the strike.

They also asked the court to determine whether members of ASUU are entitled to continue to retain their employment, having abandoned or deemed to have abandoned their work in the universities; whether or not the union complied with the mandatory provisions of Section 4 and 5 of the Trade Dispute Act CAP T8 LFN 2004 before embarking on the strike; whether the union has complied with the provision of Section 8 of the Trade Disputes Act CAP T8 LFN 2004; whether or not the minister of education is not entitled to determine the employment of the union, same having abandoned or deemed to have abandoned their work in their universities and whether or not the doctrine of collective bargain or the purported 2009 agreement can be the basis for the strike action by ASUU same not having been incorporated in their contract of employment between it and the federal government.

Minister of State, Foreign Affairs I, Professor Viola Onwuliri, was to oversee the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; while the Minister of Solid Minerals, Musa Sada, was to oversee the Ministry of Housing, Lands and Urban Development, etc. Minister of Agriculture, Akinwumi Adesina and his colleague in Power, Chinedu Nebo, were directed to take full charge of their ministries, pending the appointment of new ministers of state.

“You know, even the press has been speculating cabinet reshuffle for a long time. In fact, some have been writing almost openly saying they want cabinet reshuffle. There is no government in the world where the leaders do not reshuffle their cabinets; there is none. And cabinet reshuffle is part of a systematic public administration and I believe what the President has done is simply to address the issues of re-tooling his government to achieve service delivery.” Maku said the President set targets for the next two years and he is adjusting his cabinet to realise the objectives of his transformation agenda.

President Goodluck Jonathan, last year, signed a performance bond with ministers, which stipulated an assessment yardstick in rating the performance of his administration. The G9 apparently failed in this regard. But then some of the ministers were given a “soft landing” because of their political ambitions. This is reportedly the case with the sacked Minister of Science and Technology, Prof Ita Ewah ,who is said to be eyeing the Akwa Ibom State Government House and frequenting the state to the consternation of his home rivals. He added that, at the end of 2012, Nigerians in the Diaspora contributed over $15 billion to the economy. The minister listed some foreign investments in Nigeria from Germany to include a financial inflow of €65 million for the 30 megawatts Kiri Dam project in Adamawa State, €50 million for the 20 megawatts Yola Solar power station and a €1.5 billion for the 450 megawatts Gombe coal to power station, among other foreign investments into Nigeria. He noted that there was an FDI Portfolio of $54 million from Mexico for the development of agriculture plantations for the cultivations of bananas, pineapple and other crops for export to EU markets.
