WebmastersShocking: Do Search Engines Care About Valid HTML? by mrperfect(op): 3:01pm On Oct 19, 2012
Most web developers, have heard a lot about the importance of valid html recently. I’ve read about how it makes it easier for people with disabilities to access your site, how it’s more stable for browsers, and how it will make your site easier to be indexed by the search engines.

So when I set out to design my most recent site, I made sure that I validated each and every page of the site. But then I got to thinking – while it may make my site easier to index, does that mean that it will improve my search engine rankings? How many of the top sites have valid html?

To get a feel for how much value the search engines place on being html validated, I decided to do a little experiment. I started by downloading the handy Firefox HTML Validator Extension that shows in the corner of the browser whether or not the current page you are on is valid html. It shows a green check when the page is valid, an exclamation point when there are warnings, and a red x when there are serious errors.

I decided to use Yahoo! Buzz Index to determine the top 5 most searched terms for the day, which happened to “World Cup”, “WWE”, “FIFA”, “Shakira”, and “Paris Hilton”. I then searched each term in the big three search engines (Google, Yahoo!, and MSN) and checked the top 10 results for each with the validator. That gave me 150 of the most important data points on the web for that day.

The results were particularly shocking to me – only 7 of the 150 resulting pages had valid html (4.7%). 97 of the 150 had warnings (64.7%) while 46 of the 150 received the red x (30.7%). The results were pretty much independent of search engine or term. Google had only 4 out of 50 results validate (8%), MSN had 3 of 50 (6%), and Yahoo! had none. The term with the most valid results was “Paris Hilton” which turned up 3 of the 7 valid pages. Now I realize that this isn’t a completely exhaustive study, but it at least shows that valid html doesn’t seem to be much of a factor for the top searches on the top search engines.

Even more surprising was that none of the three search engines home pages validated! How important is valid html if Google, Yahoo!, and MSN don’t even practice it themselves? It should be noted, however, that MSN’s results page was valid html. Yahoo’s homepage had 154 warnings, MSN’s had 65, and Google’s had 22. Google’s search results page not only didn’t validate, it had 6 errors!

In perusing the web I also noticed that immensely popular sites like ESPN.com, IMDB, and MySpace don’t validate. So what is one to conclude from all of this?

It’s reasonable to conclude that at this time valid html isn’t going to help you improve your search position. If it has any impact on results, it is minimal compared to other factors. The other reasons to use valid html are strong and I would still recommend all developers begin validating their sites; just don’t expect that doing it will catapult you up the search rankings right now.

BusinessDoes Your New Business Need A Website? by mrperfect(op): 3:00pm On Oct 18, 2012
If you are starting a new business there are many things you need to keep in mind, and starting a website to market your products online is one of the most important aspects of your new business.

There are many reasons why should start a website that include saving money, convenience, more customers, professional image, and keeping up with the competition.

You will save money when you market your company via a website because this medium is always available for potential visitors. Because of this, on your website you can provide a significant amount of information that customers are looking for.

Frequently asked questions are important because most of the time customers have similar questions. So, if you go ahead and answer these questions on your website you will not have to spend the time and money required to answer them again because they are basically self service. Also, make sure you provide detailed contact information for individuals that need to contact you for whatever reason. Selling items on your website is also a good way to make money and it allows customers to shop whenever they want.

There is nothing more convenient than the Internet to provide information, shopping, or the like at any time of the day or night all year round. Because of this, company’s with websites experience a lot of traffic when the actual store is otherwise closed. This is because people enjoy logging online when they have free time whether it be at night or on the weekends.

Because of this convenience, your website will garner more customers for you, especially if you have a detailed website. The reason for this is more and more frequently individuals use the Internet in order to search for information on a wide variety of things. So, if they are searching for what you offer and you have a website then you will have more customers. The day and age of yellow pages will soon be over because the generation of the Internet is growing up using this medium to find information. So, if you have a website you will offer Internet users the ability to find information online.

In addition to these many benefits, you will also be displaying a professional image if you have a website. The reason for this is a website shows you are serious about your business, about providing information to potential clients, and staying in touch with technology and the speed of business. You will want individuals to know your company is serious, so build a website in order to show your importance.

Beyond all of this, you will also want to keep up with the competition. If they have websites and you do not, it is obvious who will win the race. The best thing to do is to evaluate your competitor’s websites and then make yours better.

WebmastersIf Your Business Isn't Online, It Should Be by mrperfect(op): 10:10am On Oct 18, 2012
If your business isn’t online, it should be. More and more small, medium-sized, and even large businesses are getting themselves professional-looking websites and putting their businesses online. There are many reasons why they are doing so, and there are many benefits for you to get a website and get your business online—no matter how big or small it is.

If you want people to know about your business and you want to see it expand and grow, then it’s absolutely vital to acquire a website. First of all, if your business isn’t online, it should be, because prospective clients who are searching the Internet for your products or services can find your site and your contact details online. Having a website for your business can also help “put you on the map” and spread the word about your business’ products or services. It’s also in your best interest to put your business online, as it will help to expand and enhance your client and customer base and relations as well as increase sales. Remember, having a business website is about selling your products or services online as well as marketing, advertising and promoting your business to existing and prospective customers.

In addition, it’s generally considered a professional practice to have an online presence. Your current clients, prospective clients, customers, business associates and others will actually expect your business—along with other businesses that aspire to succeed—to have a professional website. They will likely even be disappointed if you don’t have a website, and think or even tell you that if your business isn’t online, it should be. Having your business on the worldwide web makes it simple and convenient for people to do business with you in general—whether you want to promote your business, sell your products or services, provide and exchange information, improve customer service, or build up clientele.

Furthermore, if your business isn’t online, it should be because it makes a great first impression to have a website address and business e-mail on your business cards and stationary. When you pass out your business cards to friends, family, clients and customers, they will often take note of your website address, be impressed, check it out, help spread the word, and in turn help expand your business. However, it’s critical to keep in mind that it’s not enough to merely have a website—you need to have a professionally designed website that’s attractive, informative, well organized and easy to access and navigate. If a prospective client or customer with your business card checks out your website and finds a poorly done, confusing, visually unappealing site full of poor content and mistakes, this will usually create a negative first impression which can in turn hurt your business reputation.

In addition, competition itself should tell you that if your business isn’t online, it should be. People who own their own businesses know that in order to stay successful, one must strive to rise above the competition. Having your own professional business website can give you that extra edge and make you stand out in a positive light.

If you’re not sure how to go about putting your business online, there are many sources of information to help you set up a website. It doesn’t have to be complicated or extremely expensive, as are the common assumptions. You can search online or in the library for information on how to create and maintain a business website, you can go through a step-by-step tutorial, you can hire a friend or family member who’s knowledgeable and skilled in this area who’s willing to do it for you, or you can hire a professional web designer.

If your business isn’t online, it should be. It’s impressive, expected, professional, helpful, resourceful and beneficial in so many ways.

ComputersComputers At War In The 70’s And 80’s by mrperfect(op): 4:18pm On Oct 17, 2012
The ‘70s and the ‘80s could be easily described as the ‘computer war’. Every company had a new kind of computer, better than the last that they wanted to change the world. Everyone knew it was only a matter of time before one was adopted as the standard, with all the advantages for software compatibility this would bring – and they were desperate for it to be their model that made the big time.

In the ‘70s, two computers nearly became dominant: the Apple II and the Commodore 64. Both of these computers sold in the millions, inspiring a whole generation – they were used for everything from office tasks to games.

It was in 1980, however, that IBM launched its IBM PC, and things really went crazy. IBM’s PC wasn’t patented. IBM went to a small company named Microsoft to get an operating system for this computer, and ended up with DOS, but Microsoft was willing to license DOS to anyone else who paid their fee. By 1984, ‘IBM PC compatible’ computers were available, and a de facto standard was born. Software makers could finally write their programs for one operating system and one hardware configuration – and anyone computer that didn’t follow the specification to the letter was quickly left with no programs to run.

In 1990, Microsoft released Windows 3.0 (the first version of Windows to be really successful), and the PC’s lock on the marketplace was set in stone. The release of the Pentium and Windows 95 made it finally the fastest, cheapest and easiest system around, and it quickly stopped making sense to develop software for anything else.

From then on, the PC was the dominant computer – today, it is estimated to have between 95% and 98% of the market, with almost all the rest being held by Apple Macintosh computers.

WebmastersBlogs Could Become An Embarassing Exposure by mrperfect(op): 9:50am On Oct 17, 2012
Public entries intended for friends could become an embarrassing exposure.

The number of places where young people go to bare their souls, to vent, to gossip is increasing. These places are the blogs – where people post their innermost thoughts for any number of Web surfers to see.

Most bloggers Philosophy to be totally honest – "whether it’s about my neighbor’s dog or my opinions about Iraq war, since the people who read my blog are friends or acquaintances of mine".
But some people find that a price can be paid for putting one’s life online. Maya Marcel-Keyes, daughter of conservative politician Alan Keyes, had some discussions on her blog about being a lesbian, and this became an issue during her father’s recent campaign for U.S. Senate because he made anti-gay statements.

Such incidents can cause personal and public dramas, often taking on a life they wouldn't have if the Web had not come along and turned individuals into publishers.

Other people think that some blog entries about partying and dating exploits will have ramifications down the road.

Some traditional blog sites, like Xanga, LiveJournal or MySpace, which allow easy creation of a Web site with text, photos and often music, have gotten more popular in recent years, especially among the younger set.

Pew Internet & American Life Project made some surveys completed in recent months and found that nearly a fifth of teens who have access to the Web have their own blogs. And 38 percent of teens say they read other people's blogs.

I’m increasingly hearing stories about the risk of posting a blog, says Amanda Lenhart, a researcher at Pew. For example, a man whose daughter was a college student looking for a job. He typed his daughter’s name into a search engine and found her blog, with a title that began "The Drunken Musings of ...."

“And they surely have some discussions” said Lenhart, chuckling.

WebmastersBlogging For A Living? Here's How... by mrperfect(op): 9:34am On Oct 17, 2012
People are often amazed to find out that people are out there making their living as bloggers. Most people will create their own personal blog to post personal opinions and views. Professional bloggers can make money using their own personal blog or they can work for other websites. If you are interested in how to make a living as a blogger, consider this information before you get started.

If you decide that you would like to use your own personal blog in order to create an income there are a few things you should know. First, most bloggers make their income using partnerships with advertisers. You can easily form a partnership with an advertiser, using programs such as AdSense. When you create an account with using something like AdSense, you will be giving the advertiser permission to advertise on your blog. You will choose the placement and size of the advertisement boxes; however they will choose what advertisements will go up in the space. The ads will change periodically depending on the content of your text.

Whenever a reader clicks on the advertisement, you will get paid. This can be very effective, especially if you have high volumes of traffic on your blog. These programs will even tell you how much traffic you have, in case you had no idea. Many of the advertising blog programs are free to begin. Some of the fancier versions may cost a little, but overall, a beginner can stick with the free versions.

Since making a living as a blogger all boils down to trying to get more traffic to your site so they might click on the ads, content is very important. The best thing to do is cover a wide variety of topics. Posting a large amount of short articles on your blog is a great way to get people to your blog. The more keyword rich your content is (saturated with specific keywords), the more traffic you will have. The idea is that when someone goes to a search engine and types in a keyword, your site will come up since you have an article rich with that keyword.

Obviously you cannot have an article on everything. You can however do research to see what the most popular keywords are at the time and try to use them to help you along. Using the time of year is a great thing to. Christmas keywords are extremely popular right after Thanksgiving occurs, so keep important holidays in mind when thinking of keyword phrases to use in your articles. If you are not a great writer, you can even hire freelance writers to help you with the content. The more content you have, the better off you will likely be.

Although this may seem simple, it can be quite difficult really to get people to your blog. There are studies that show different success rates based on the most minor things, like where the advertising box is located on your blog. Some experts will say the left side of your screen is the best place for it, while others will argue that the top is the best place. You really have to do your research and stay on top of the game in order to make a living as a blogger. Simply signing in and creating a post each day is not going to be enough to draw enough people in to make a difference. Since programs don’t pay a large amount per click, you need to get more and more people to click on the ads in order to make any cash at this venture.

But, you can feel great knowing that there is a possibility you can make a little cash blogging. Basically, the more time you put into the blog and researching the advertising programs, the better off you are going to be. While AdSense is probably one of the best places to begin, there are many other programs out there that you can utilize. Just do a search on the topic and you will have a handful from which to choose. After everything gets rolling, you will be happy to know it doesn’t take as much work down the road as the initial setup requires. Soon you could sit back and watch the money roll in without doing much at all!

WebmastersBefore You Get a Blog read this: Blogging On Free Hosts Not A Good Idea by mrperfect(op):
This article is about blogging and why you should never blog on a free host like blogger.com or I am writing this to alert people out there who are building blogs on free blog hosts like blogger.com and

Installing wordpress is free and gives you full control over your blog. There are other platforms like moveable type to choose from as well. Take a look around and find the platform you like or that best fits your blogging style. I've learned an expensive lesson and now will only build blogs on my own domain names.

The reason?

Lets start with blogger.com

They have a new out of control spam bot. Search the blogger help forums and you will find the horror stories. Legitimate blogs are being deleted, people are getting locked out of their blog until reviewed, and assumed to be a spammer because either the bot flagged the blog or someone clicked the little flag button at the top of all blogger blogs.

That and the fact that they have constant problems with the publishing getting stuck at 0%, slow load times, etc. it makes blogging through blogger.com a buggy experience at best and your content or reason for blogging is up to someone else's interpretation of what is or is not legitimate.

I understand getting rid of splogs and spammers, but in blogger.com’s case the cure is worse than the disease. They were not always that way. I've been on blogger a long time and the service used to be good.

As far as , they are just as bad. If the blog links to a website and looks as if it might be promoting people to go to that website they will suspend your account without warning and lock you out of all the content.

I'm not sure what they think blogs are for, but they seem to think they have a noble purpose in life and that they alone decide what is a "genuine blog" or not.

A "genuine blog" is one that is controlled by the individual who writes to it, not one that must adhere to someone else's idea of what their blog should look like and what it should say.

If you blog on freehosts just be aware your content and your blog is in the hands of others who will decide for the world whether or not your blog should be seen by others.

I recommend all bloggers get their own domain names and install their own blogs. You probably have learned that using a freehost for your company’s website is bad for business so why put your company’s blog on a freehost?

The same goes for individuals. Blogs allow you to express yourself the way you want to express yourself. That is the beauty of blogging. Are you willing to sacrifice your individuality to conform to what blogger.com or thinks is a “genuine” way to express yourself?

Many times the person deciding your fate is someone who has never had any authority over other people and who think that now they have Godlike powers to decide the fate of content written by others. These are people who likely produce no content of value themselves and think they know what is best for the rest of the world.

Get your own domain name and install a blogging platform that fits your needs. It’s the best advice you will ever get about blogging. You only own the blog if it is on your own domain name. Everything else is just providing content for someone else.
