NCDC DG speaks on the differences between COVID-19 and Malaria hours after Raymond Dokpesi demanded for answers

Chikwe Iheakweazu, the Director-General of the National Center for Disease Control today spoke on the between the ravaging viral disease, COVID-19 and Malaria.



This comes after the chairman of DAAR communications, Raymond Dokpesi who was discharged from an Isolation center in Abuja on Thursday May 14, asked what the differences were because according to him, all the drugs given to him at the Isolation center were anti-malaria drugs. Dokpesi while speaking to newsmen after his discharge, said



''I still have doubts in my mind. I still want to be properly educated. What is the difference between COVID-19 which is a virus and Malaria which is caused by mosquitos because every medication we were given was malartia medication. Some people, before they were told they were COVID-19 positive, they were tested in reputable laboratories and hospitals in Abuja and what they found was that they had a lot of malaria parasites in their bloodstream. So when did malaria become synonymous to COVID-19?''



A reporter at the daily briefing of the Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19, threw this question to the NCDC boss and here is what he had to say



''I think we all know COVID-19 is a respiratory illness caused by a virus, Malaria is caused by a parasite. They are completely different diseases.

However, many diseases present exactly the same way in the beginning, Yellow fever presents the same way with fever at the beginning, Lassa the same way, malaria the same way.

So, the initial presentation of a febrille illness is similar across diseases. There is no specific treatment for COVID-19 so what clinicians do is to manage your symtoms so that your body recovers as quickly as possible.

You can have Malaria and COVID-19. That you have COVID-19 doesn't prevent you from having Malaria and if you are in a hospital for one month, you could definitely be co-infected by both of them.

So there are many reasons why people receive similar treatments but they are two completely different diseases with different pathogenesis.'' he said

According to the man who recorded the video, those who executed Idi-iroko-olugbemi-adewale road project claimed that they had completed the project but the job they did was shabby and they only claimed they are through with the project so that they can collect money from the federal government.

He explained that they just poured a layer of asphalt over sand, without proper drainage/gutter work done on the road which should make the road last longer; meanwhile, its already been shown on media that the road project is already completed.

Another Turkish lady narrates how an Ondo man impregnated and abandoned her; says an Igbo man is now taking care of her

Another Turkish lady has shared her experience with a Nigerian man who impregnated her and disappeared.

In an Instalive live chat with popular comedian Michael Blackson, the lady disclosed that she used to work with the 42-year-old Ondo man who owns a business in Turkey. However after she got pregnant, she said the Ondo man disappeared.

A driver to a luxurious bus company called Good-luck was during the week, intercepted trying to smuggle people from the northern states of Nigeria, into Enugu state. They were intercepted by a team made up of concerned citizens who raised alarm and called on one Captain Yusuff of 82 Division Enugu who mobilized his men to go stop the driver from entering into the main town.

During questioning, the driver claimed he was oblivious of the implications of his actions; he said he doesnt know how carrying people from one part of the country to another was wrong despite the interstate travel ban placed in the country.

when asked how they managed to enter into Enugu state, the driver said that he discharged the passengers at Benue state; the passengers now used okada to cross over to obollo-afor, which was the agreed meeting point. On his own part, he claimed to have bribed the policemen manning the border with four thousand naira for him to be allowed to enter into Enugu state.

COVID-19 patients in Niger state on Wednesday May 6th staged a protest in their Isolation center over what they termed poor welfare and treatment meted at them.



They requested to be allowed to go back to their homes instead of being left to ''die of hunger'' at the isolation facility. This comes after COVID19 patients in Gombe state also staged their own protest.



Meanwhile one of the patients at the Niger state Isolation center has absconded from the Isolation center. This was disclosed on the state government's Twitter handle.

I am worried, I see danger ahead- SGF, Boss Mustapha, warns as Nigerians continue to flout COVID19 guidelines


Boss Mustapha, chairman of the Presidential Taskforce on COVID19 and Secretary to the Government of the Federation SGF, Boss Mustapha, says he is worried and sees danger ahead as the ease of the lockdown entered day three today.



At the press briefing of the taskforce in Abuja today, Mustapha says the outright disregard for all COVID19 prevention guidelines only potent danger for Nigerians even as the battle against COVID19 continues. In his words



Today I am a little bit sober because of the dangers that I see ahead and I referred to it in my speech.

I said early assessment of the ease of lockdown phase, indicates that Nigerians are yet to come to terms with the deadliness and the virulent nature of COVID19 and this gives us concern on the high possibility of increased shedding of the virus to hitherto unaffected persons and populations.

I went ahead to mention some of the worries. One of it is total disregard for the protocols that government has issued which includes social distancing, wearing of mask, personal hygiene, ban on inter state travels. We have just thrown them to the wind.

I concluded with a very subtle reminder that the overall assessment of compliance with the measures and the outcome of models we have developed, point in the direction of danger ahead.'' he said

He added that the only way the danger ahead can be averted is for everyone to have personal discipline, increased awareness and enforcement.



The one month lockdown by President Buhari was eased off on Monday May 4 and was largely characterised by outright disregard for all COVID19 prevention guidelines.

A pastor has been caught with some charms in his wardrobe. The charms which included animal horns were tied with red cloth.

The Police Command in Edo on Saturday recovered the bodies of two kidnapped victims allegedly killed by their abductors.

According to the command, the deceased were kidnapped by suspected Fulani herders on Jan 1 and killed on Jan 7.

DSP Chidi Nwabuzor, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, told newsmen during the exhuming of the bodies that the victims were on their way from the East to Lagos when they were kidnapped.

Nwabuzor said that on March 4, the command’s Anti Kidnapping and Cyber Crime Unit, received a petition from a lawyer representing the Lord’s Chosen Church, in Lagos on the matter.

He said the petitioner had stated that on Jan 1, at about 2:30 a.m., two of the church members, Basil Odoji and Innocent Udoh, were kidnapped at Ahor By-pass on Benin-Auchi Expressway on their way to Lagos.

“Our operatives swung into action and arrested one Abdullahi Usman, aged 22 years at Aduwawa, Benin, and recovered one itel phone belonging to Innocent Udoh, one of the victims.

“The suspect confessed to being a kidnapper and said that he and his gang members killed Basil Odoji and Innocent Udoh after seven days of captivity.

“Thereafter he led the police operatives to Ahor community where two of his gang members, Abdul Kadiri, aged 21 years; and Mohammed Lawan, aged 25 years, were arrested.

“The three suspects confessed to kidnapping and murdering the victims”, he said.

He further said that the Edo Commissioner of Police (CP), Lawan Jimeta, had sympathised with the families of the victims while assuring them that justice would take its course.

“In spite of COVID-19, the command is still working and remains committed to ensuring that it’s constitutional duties are carried out,” Nwabuzor said.

The suspects told newsmen in the jungle, about two kilometres from Ahor bye-pass, off Benin-Auchi Expressway where they killed the victims, that they committed the crime.

They claimed that they were from Kaduna State and had been in Edo for more than one year.

They also disclosed that they were herders before being recruited into the kidnap gang by the leaders who they simply identified as Musa and Bello, now at large.

The suspects also said that theirs was a seven-man gang, and claimed that the two victims were killed by one of the leaders because the victims shouted and tried to escape.

The bodies of the victims have been taken to a mortuary.

Ghanaians took to the streets in their numbers to celebrate after the 21-day Coronavirus lockdown order was lifted, though public gatherings are still banned.



President Nana Akufo-Addo announced Sunday, April 19, in a televised address, that Ghana is lifting a 21-day lockdown of its biggest cities after the restrictions bought the government enough time to improve its preparedness for the coronavirus pandemic.



Residents of the capital, Accra, and major centers will be allowed to return to work from Monday even though other restrictions such as school closures and a ban on sport and religious meetings remain in place, Akufo-Addo said.




Ghana has spent the three-week lockdown to conduct more than 68,000 tests and draw-up plans to establish testing centers in all of its 16 regions, Akufo-Addo said. Local factories commenced the production of protective equipment while drone services are used to speed-up the transportation of tests, he said.



Confirmed cases reached 1,042 with nine deaths, while the results of 18,000 testing samples remain outstanding.



“Lifting these restrictions doesn’t mean we are letting our guard down,” said Akufo-Addo. “We’ll tailor our solution to our unique social economic and cultural condition. There’s no one-size fits all approach.”

Lagos State commissioner of health Prof Abayomi has just stated that a six weeks old baby has been tested positive of coronavirus. The commissioner further stated that though it is not known how the baby contracted the virus; (in the womb, while being breastfed by the mom, or being in close proximity with an infected person), research was ongoing around the world to find how such cases could happen.

Tailor weeps as her shop is destroyed during stay at home order; her machines and peoples materials among what was destroyed.

A tailors shop has been destroyed by officials sent by the government. Though no reason was given for the destruction of the shops; one of the shop owner who is a tailor recorded the scene as she wept.

According to her; the government told Nigerians to stay at home, which she obeyed. Now, the same government has destroyed her shop without informing them or even allowing them to come pick up any valuables they have in their shops.

She complained that numerous customers had their clothes/materials in the shop and she also had expensive machines which were all destroyed along with the shop

A visibly angry Lagosian has blasted the present government on the way they are handling the citizenry during the COVID-19 pandemic. He made more emphasis on how funds are being disbursed to the less privileged across all states.

According to him, its worrying that the government wont pay those who have up to five thousand Naira in their account. He exclained that almost all the benefactors are in the North; meanwhile, it is the south that provides the monies being given to the northerners; from crude oil in the south south, to waterways in the south west.

Benue index Coronavirus case cries out, says she's being detained by the FG

Mrs. Susan Okpe, who the Benue State government named as the first Coronavirus case in Benue State, has gone on social media to call for help while claiming she's being detained by the FG.



The London based woman, in a new video shared online, accused the Federal Government of keeping her for treatment against her will.



Recall that on March 28, Governor Samuel Ortom in line with the advice of members of the Benue Action Committee on COVID-19 made public the name and test result of the index case.



It was announced that she arrived the state from London for a burial ceremony and had sought medical attention at a private hospital in Makurdi, after falling ill. Her health condition was said to have attracted the attention of the Benue COVID-19 committee, which subjected her to test by National Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, that allegedly confirmed she was COVID-19 positive.



However, Mrs Okpe insisted at the time that she was not sick (read here). She was later moved to the isolation and treatment centre at Benue State University Teaching Hospital, BSUTH, after much persuasion by the chairman of the committee and Benue State Deputy Governor, Mr. Benson Abounu.



On April 4, the Benue state Commissioner of Health, Dr. Sunday Ongbabo told newsmen that “the Federal Ministry of Health wrote to the Committee requesting that the patient be transferred to Abuja (read here), and the Committee obliged. So she has been moved to Abuja.”



It was gathered that the request to move the patient to Abuja was prompted by her insistence that she was not sick and alleged refusal to cooperate with the medical team at the BSUTH treatment centre.



Two days ago, the patient took to the social media in a two and half minutes video recording asking the federal government to release her from “incarceration.”



She said in the video: "Hi, everybody, this is Susan Idoko Okpe, née Lawani. I am pleading with everybody to please tell Nigerian government to let me go. This is my 16th day of incarceration. What have I done, what have I done? Benue state lied on me that I have COVID-19. I just got the result yesterday after 15 days and the result is a stage play with different date birthdays, different recordings which they themselves know and trying to put right."

Some Masquerades have been arrested in Anambra State for defying a stay-at-home order issued by the the state government, over the outbreak of Coronavirus in the country.



The Anambra State Government had ordered a restriction on movement and closure of markets in the state for 14 days.

This video shows different policemen who are caught on camera, aiding commuters in breaking the lock down/social distancing order given by the federal government.

In the first part of the video, a plain cloth police officer was shown, conveying about 11 passengers to an unknown destination. When stopped by a task force official, he flashed his ID card, thinking it will give him immunity; but unknown to him, the female task force official was one who would not be intimidated. She made sure some of the passengers disembarked, giving the much needed space between passengers, before she allowed the vehicle continue its journey.

In the second part of the video, the same woman is seen stopping a full 18 seater bus. who had a uniformed and armed police officer as an escort. The officer when questioned, said he has taking the passengers back to Ekiti state.

This short clip shows a Kaduna based man, claiming that he believes the Kaduna state governor Nasir El RUFAI is not infected with the coronavirus.
