Four aides of South West leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Buruji Kashamu, were arrested Saturday by security operatives on suspicion of committing elections related offences. The quartet which included Kashamu’s driver and nephew, were apprehended in Ijebu – Itele in Ogun East local government area of Ogun state during the governorship and house of assembly elections. The two others were alleged to have adorned uniforms of the Mobile Police (MOPOL). It was gathered that the suspects were riding in an unmarked jeep said to belong to Kashamu, who doubled as the Senator-elect on the ticket of PDP for Ogun East Senatorial seat. But Kashamu, who spoke with reporters shortly after casting his vote at Ward 06, polling Unit 26, in Ijebu – Igbo, admitted that his aides were arrested while on a legitimate errand at Itele community. He said his aides were in the area to deliver money meant for the payment of the PDP party agents working at the polls. Kashamu said; “that is true but we cannot call it arrest. I am the South West chairman Mobilisation and Organisation Committee and of course, I am entitled to INEC pass. But I am a little bit ill and couldn’t go out. “And last night when they were trying to distribute money to party agents, they couldn’t get enough money and I was told that Ijebu East needed N500, 000 which I gave to them. I sent one of my niece with two colleagues and a tag on my Range Rover vehicle.” “So, when they got there, the APC, headed by the former deputy governorship candidate in the 2011 general election, Tunde Oladunjoye decided to block them and used their power because they felt they are in power in Ogun state and that they have the backing of all the military. From there, they were arrested.” http://thenationonlineng.net/new/electoral-offences-aides-of-buruji-kashamu-arrested-in-ogun/ |
President-elect Muhammadu Buhari said the All Progressives Congress (APC) has nothing to fear over mass defection of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members to the party. "I have no fears of PDP defectors," he said in an interview in his Daura residence on Saturday. Buhari said the PDP chieftains will have very little influence in the APC government. He said APC has all the capacity to manage the large numbers of PDP defectors. "The people who are defecting will only have influence in their constituencies. Since their constituencies are now controlled by the APC their influence is therefore limited," he said. Though the president-elect said only the party can handle the issue of defections, he said the PDP bigwigs will be wise enough not to jostle for positions in the new government. "I hope the people that are defecting will accept the fact that they are joining the people who succeeded. So, I don't think they will just come and say they want to be ministers next month simply because they were ministers before," he said. http://dailytrust.com.ng/weekly/index.php/nigeriavotes/94-katsina/20024-pdp-defectors-won-t-be-ministers-in-my-govt-buhari |
Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, Umar Fintir has been served with an impeachment notice by the lawmakers of the assembly. The Speaker who was recently sacked as the acting governor of the state by an Abuja High Court, was reportedly served the impeachment notice on Tuesday. Abusidiqu had reported earlier that no less than 17 members of the assembly are currently pressing for Fintiri’s removal, saying that the speaker may be shown the way out sooner than expected as the legislators could no more vouch for his integrity.Fintiri who returned to the House to reclaim his position as Speaker is poised for a fight to get back to the position of acting governor by removing the newly sworn-in governor, Bala Ngilari. He filed a suit on Thursday at the Court of Appeal in Abuja, asking it to sack Ngilari and install him. He claimed that Justice Adeniyi Ademola erred in law when he held that the former Deputy Governor (now Governor), James Bala Ngilari did not resign in accordance with constitutional provision. http://abusidiqu.com/adamawa-state-speaker-umar-fintiri-served-impeachment-notice/

Chairman of the Organisation and Mobilisation Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South West, Prince Buruji Kashamu yesterday said that former President Olusegun Obasanjo is morally bankrupt. Kashamu said this in a statement he issued in Lagos in reaction to Obasanjo’s letter to the leadership of the PDP, in which the former president said he could not work with him because of his alleged criminal past. Chief Obasanjo had said in the letter that he had no grouse against anybody in his party, but he would not accept a wanted drug baron as the PDP leader in his region, the South West. The former president had insisted that the issue bordered on principle and morality. But Kashamu, apart from denying the allegation, said that the obvious question Nigerians should ask Obasanjo is whether he has any justification to moralise and pontificate at all, given his well-chronicled personal moral bankruptcy. He also maintained that Obasanjo’s statements exhibit his disdain for the rule of law and the authority of the courts “since this cocktail of lies comprise the same malicious falsehood that is the subject of the libel action I have commenced against him and in which trial is to commence tomorrow, Tuesday, 14th October, 2014”. The PDP chieftain said, “The indubitable fact of history that Baba Obasanjo has not told the world is that it was during his first tenure as president that he and former Beninoise president, Matthew Kerekou directed the relevant security agencies to give truthful evidence that rebutted the false allegation that I was a habitual criminal or involved in any drug related crime.” He also alleged that it was for this reason that the Interpol in Benin Republic and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Nigeria came to the London courts between 2000 and 2002 to give evidence during his incarceration and trial. Kashamu further alleged that chief Obasanjo used him to prosecute his battle against former Governor Gbenga Daniel and to wrest the control of the PDP from Otunba Daniel in 2011 and it was time to field candidates for the 2011 general elections, Obasanjo brought “his stooge”, Gen. Adetunji Olurin, and asked him to roll the party structure behind his anointed candidate. He said, “Despite his pretensions, the reason I have become the target of Obasanjo’s wicked campaign of calumny and blackmail is because he perceives me as his obstacle to the control of the PDP structures in Ogun State and in the South West. “Chief Obasanjo has publicly declared his opposition to the second term entitlement of President Goodluck Jonathan and had wanted to use the erstwhile National Secretary, Olagunsoye Oyinlola; the former National Auditor, Bode Mustapha and the ex-National Vice-Chairman, Segun Oni, to thwart Mr. President’s re-election. The almighty Allah Subhana wa tala used me to stand up to him and the rest is history. http://leadership.ng/news/386964/obasanjo-morally-bankrupt-kashamu

The feud between the outgoing Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, and the Governor-elect, Ayodele Fayose, is affecting the plans for the October 16 inauguration, it was learnt on Monday. On September 15, Fayemi inaugurated a 19-member transition committee, comprising members from his administration and those nominated by Fayose. But since the inaugural meeting of September 15, the transition committee has yet to meet. There had been counter-accusations between the administration and the Peoples Democratic Party on the running of government after the June 21 governorship election won by Fayose. The head of Fayose’s nominees, Chief Dipo Anisulowo, who was named as co-chairman of the committee, has expressed concerns over the attitude of the government’s team. In an interview with our correspondent on Monday, Anisulowo said, “We are leaving in an abnormal time. Transition is supposed to be done by the two parties but this time around we are just on our own.” He alleged that the government’s team had been evasive on plans for the inauguration. He said, “The outgoing administration is not cooperating with us at all. The only time we met was the inaugural meeting. Since then, there has been no meeting. We have written several letters to them to make inquiry but they are not forthcoming. “We ask for the state of account, plans for the inauguration, the logistics and useful information that will aid our preparation but there has yet to be any response. What they keep saying is that they will provide information in the handover note.” However, Anisulowo, who was the Director-General of the Ayo Fayose Campaign Organisation, was optimistic that the inauguration would hold on October 16, “The inauguration will hold by the grace of God, it cannot be scuttled. We are communicating with the Chief Judge, so we are confident the inauguration will hold,” he said. Despite the non-cooperation of the outgoing administration, Anisulowo said the PDP would continue with its own plan no matter what. “We would hold a reception in honour of the Governor-elect tomorrow (Tuesday). He is expected to come to Ado-Ekiti. We would also organise same for our guests who are coming to town on Wednesday,” he added. Efforts to speak with the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Ganiyu Owolabi, who is the chairman of the transition committee, proved abortive. He neither answered his calls nor responded to a text message from our correspondent as of press time. During the committee’s inaugural meeting, Owolabi, who stood in for Fayemi, had declared that the governor would continue to take actions and decisions till his last day in office. “There cannot be a vacuum in governance and it must be known that the present government has a mandate of four years during which it is expected to provide leadership without fail,” he said. http://www.punchng.com/news/fayemi-fayoses-feud-deepens-over-inauguration/

Alhaji Faruk Aliyu, former member of the House of Representatives, has said that he would sell the Dutse Airport if elected the governor of Jigawa State. Aliyu, who represented Birnin Kudu Constituency, and an aspirant on the platform of All Progressives Congress, said this on Sunday in Bauchi while fielding questions from newsmen. He said: “If I become the governor, if I have my way, I will sell the airport of Jigawa State because we don’t need it. “Absolutely we don’t need an airport there. “Anybody who is interested in the airport will be welcome to pay Jigawa State Government and take over the airport and use it. “Even in Kano, I remember in those days, everybody flies from Kano, there are now few flights from Kano.” Aliyu, a member of Integrity Group, which went to court to ensure that President Goodluck Jonathan was sworn in as president when late President Umaru Yar’Adua became incapacitated, cautioned against unnecessary criticisms against Jonathan. He said: “This is a country where you see Northerners in droves moving to the Southern part of the country seeking for livelihood. “They go there to be sugar cane sellers, security men, to be ‘Okada boys’ (commercial motorcycle riders), yet our governors are doing little to boost employment through agriculture. “Enhancing agriculture will ensure that people go to farms instead of being involved in social vices. “What we need in Dutse is enhanced agriculture, make sure our people go to school, make sure there is drinking water, provide hospitals that work and enhance security among others.” http://theeagleonline.com.ng/ill-sell-jigawa-airport-if-i-become-governor-says-aspirant/

Ahead of the 2015 general elections, over 20 senior advocates of Nigeria (SANs) have concluded plans to drag President Goodluck Jonathan to court and seek relevant legal interpretation over his legibility to contest in the presidential race. The action of the SANs is part of a security report to be presented to Jonathan this week, said a security source, who pleaded anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on the matter. He said, “Over 20 SANs are set to take the president to court. The president will be briefed on this development this week. We hope the president will act quickly on the report.” It had been reported that some powerful politicians and groups in the country have assembled a team of lawyers to challenge him whenever he declares his intention to take a shot at the nation’s No. 1 job. The constitution provides that a president can only serve two terms, and opposition to Jonathan’s re-election ambition argue that he has served already. Checks by LEADERSHIP further show that some top politicians are waiting for the president to declare to enable them embark on the legal battle, as any move in that direction now would amount to a wild goose chase. Consequently, Jonathan is reportedly having serious thoughts over his 2015 re-election ambition because of the constitutional obstacles in his way. Lawyers across the country have also started debating the issue. The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “There are two constitutional provisions that are in question. The first is section 135 (1) and (2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, which states that no president can take the oath of office of the president of Nigeria more than twice. “You will recall that on May 6, 2010, President Jonathan was sworn in by Justice Aloysius Katsina-Alu as the fifth president of Nigeria after the death of then president Umaru Musa Yar’Adua. Upon winning the presidential election in 2011, he was again sworn in and took the oath of office as the sixth president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. This means he has been sworn in twice already, not as acting president but with full powers as commander-in- chief.” The contentious Section 135 (1) & (2) of the Constitution provide thus: “(1) Subject to the provisions of this Constitution, a person shall hold the office of President until – (a) his successor in office takes the oath of office; (b) he dies whilst holding such office; or (c) the date when his resignation from office takes effect; or (d) he otherwise ceases to hold office in accordance with the provisions of this Constitution. (2) Subject to the provisions of subsection (1) of this section, the President shall vacate his office at the expiration of a period of four years commencing from the date, when – (a) in the case of a person first elected as President under this Constitution, he took the Oath of Allegiance and the Oath of office; and (b) in any case, the person last elected to that office under this Constitution took the Oath of Allegiance and the Oath of office but, for his death, has taken such oaths”. The source also revealed that the president, who is getting ready to declare anytime soon, is consulting with stakeholders across the country and beyond on his elegibility in the 2015 presidential election. http://leadership.ng/news/386915/2015-20-sans-set-drag-jonathan-court-eligibility

Efforts by stakeholders in the All Progressives Congress, APC to forge a consensus between two of the major presidential aspirants in the party, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and Governor Rabiu Kwankwanso have failed. Both men in an apparent determination to slug it out have now formally scheduled dates to declare their aspirations. Reflective of their efforts for political supremacy, the associates of both men were last night engaged in a war of words on who was better placed to win the presidential ticket of the party. Buhari is to declare for the contest on Wednesday, October 15, while Governor Kwankwanso has himself scheduled his declaration for October 23, 2014. Kwankwaso’s decision to go public with his bid, it was learnt, was sequel to the failed effort to forge a consensus deal between him and Buhari. Both men are presently, the two major aspirants from the Northwest geopolitical zone of the country. The development has led to a serious division among APC supporters in the zone over who should fly the flag of the party in the coming election. Buhari is mainly supported by the masses but Kwankwanso is believed to have the support of government officials and political office holders especially in Kano State. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Leadership Newspaper publisher, Sam Nda-Isaiah are the two other major contenders remaining in the north following yesterday’s formal declaration by Senator Bukola Saraki to withdraw himself from the contest. Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State is also known to be testing the waters for a possible bid. While Kwamkwaso’s supporters are making a case for a young blood to take a shot at the presidency, Buhari’s followers advance political maturity, popularity and experience as factors that cannot be ignored. Speaking yesterday on Kwakwanso’s plans for the presidential race, an associate and member of the Board of Trustees, BoT of the APC, Chief Olisameka Akamukali said that baring any unforeseen circumstances, that Kwankwanso would unveil his presidential campaign on October 23. Akamukali, a former chairman of the Democratic Peoples Party, DPP in Delta State said that Governor Kwankwaso had consulted widely concerning his ambition even as he said that Buhari needed to give a younger person a chance to contest the presidency. “Now in as much as we agree that Buhari is a man of integrity but you will also agree with me that age is not on his side,” he said. His claim was immediately dismissed by a senior official of the party also sympathetic to the Buhari campaign who described Kwankwanso’s bid as a clownish act. He said that Buhari would defeat the Kano governor even in Kano. “Yes, I know that Kwankwanso can get a huge pile of the government delegates from Kano but that is the much he can get. What of the other states or is he relying only on Kano?” “Or have you forgotten in 2011 that Buhari defeated the former governor of Kano, Ibrahim Shekarau even in Kano? The Buhari campaign is a brand, watch out and see what we are going to do at the declaration on Wednesday,” the official said. Continuing, the Buhari associate wondered why Kwankwanso mobilises his Kano based supporters anytime he goes out of the state, saying that on the contrary that Buhari has his supporters all over the country and does not need to carry supporters along to show his political viability.” “You know the fact that he has control of one big state does not mean that he is popular outside the state,” the Buhari man said. But asserting the viability of Kwankwanso over Buhari, Akamukali said: “The issue of anointing candidates for elections has been rejected by the APC and that is why the party is insisting that there shall be transparent primaries. The fears of some of the aspirants may be due to the fact of their previous experience where they never faced competitive primaries to emerge as party candidate. That is why such people are pushing for consensus. “The generality of the party is saying no, let us do things differently from what the PDP are doing. We must have a transparent primary. I can tell you that Kwakwanso has built a lot of bridges across the political divide. Remember, he came into the House of Representatives as a member of then Social Democratic Party (SDP) in 1991 and became Deputy Speaker.” According to Akamukali, one factor that gives Kwankwaso an edge over other aspirants was his firm control of APC structures in his state. “One other factor that is considered additional strength to the Kano governor is that whereas he has solid home base support, his co-contestants, like Atiku and Buhari could not boast of being in control of the structures of the party in their home states. “From the angle of qualification, the constitution is very clear on this, a man who has a doctorate in Engineering, academically is qualified, a man who has not been convicted by any competent court, a man whom the EFCC and other Federal Government anti graft agencies have investigated and nothing was found on him is eminently qualified to contest for the president of the country, “ he stated. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/10/buhari-kwankwaso-go-separate-ways-consensus-plan-flops/

Although his private jet was used to illegally ferry $9.3 million cash to South Africa, the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Ayo Oritsejafor, did no wrong, the presidency has said. The Senior Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan on Public Communication, Doyin Okupe, stated this on Sunday in Abuja while addressing journalists. “Oritsejafor has no business in this matter,” he said. “It is true that he owns the aircraft but there are over 200 private Nigerians who have jets. Apart from those who use it frequently, some give it out to get some money and defray some of the costs. If you put your jet down, you pay money and parking charges every day.” The presidential aide reiterated Mr. Oritsejafor’s statement that he had given the aircraft to a private company to manage. “He gave the private jet to a company to manage. The company is handing it and these people gave out the plane that is available. What has this to do with Oritsejafor? “If I have many cars at the airport and decide to give one to car hire services. And he decides to carry somebody having Indian hemp, will you link it up with the man who gave it out?” he said. Mr. Okupe claimed that anyone criticising Mr. Oritsejafor’s role in the shady deal was not giving due respect to the office the latter holds as CAN president. “Most Nigerians do not also respect the sensibilities of other people,” he said. “Oritsejafor is the President of CAN and head of all Christians in Nigeria who is representing at least 50 per cent of people in this country. When it comes to a man like that, people should be cautious and circumspect.” The presidential aide also claimed those linking Mr. Oritsejafor, a well known ally of President Jonathan, to the scandal were being mischievous and only playing politics with the issue. “The linking of Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor is the most unfortunate thing,” he said. “To put the very respectable, responsible, honest and sincere President of CAN in this matter is the extreme of mischief. It just shows you what Nigerians do; they go to any extent to politicize everything and every day. “What bothers me here is the manner with people want to bring down Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor on this matter. It is pure absurdity.” Mr. Okupe also defended the federal government’s handling of the saga, saying all information about it could not be disclosed because of the security implications. “The Nigerian government cannot share all information about the issues because it is a security matter. It is an issue which we cannot just bring to public domain,” he said. “I am surprised that Nigerians want to discuss security issues openly and publicly when a war is still going on. “These are very serious national security affairs and running a government is not the same thing as running a Shoprite, where everything is on the table and on display.” Despite that moving cash of such magnitude) into a foreign country, including Nigeria, is illegal, and despite South Africa’s insistence on holding on to the money due to the illegality, Mr. Okupe insisted the transaction was not “shady.” “There is nothing shady about the South African deal and the Office of the NSA (National Security Adviser) has done very well. “Because at the appropriate time, they came in that, ‘yes, this money belongs to us and this was what it was meant for.’ That explanation itself was okay. There is no hanky panky on this matter,” he said. After the $9.3 million cash was seized, another $5.7 million was also seized by South African authorities as it was to be wired by a South African firm to Nigeria. The Nigerian government has said that like the first, second sum was also to purchase arms from South Africa; and that it was being returned because the private company it paid the money to was not duly registered in South Africa. Despite criticism from Nigeria and abroad that further trailed the second transaction, Mr. Okupe said it was a normal deal. “A company was mandated to do a national security assignment for the Federal Government of Nigeria and because of the extant laws in South Africa, that company was unable to deliver its contractual agreement with the Nigerian government. “The company now wants a refund, which is normal”, Mr. Okupe said. Since the scandals broke, the federal government and Mr. Oritsejafor have come under heavy criticisms for their roles in the shady deals. Some of those who have criticised both parties include a former CAN President and Catholic Cardinal, Olubunmi Okogie, and the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC. The APC, apart from asking the federal government to come clean on the deals, also asked the government to disclose the identity of the two Nigerians that were in the cash-stuffed private jet. There have been reports that an ex-Niger Delta militant and ally of President Jonathan, Asari Dokubo, was one of the two Nigerians. Mr. Okupe did not disclose the identity of both men. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/169367-seized-9-3-million-arms-money-nigerias-presidency-defends-oritsejafor.html

I have read a statement issued by the Media aide to the Speaker Adamawa State House of Assembly in which he issued a direct threat to my person. That statement must have come from an ignorant mind that lacks what to say. It was simply a huge joke from someone who has been reduced to a clown by his Boss. What one expects from the camp of the Speaker and indeed the House of Assembly is a sense of remorse and not such brazen arrogance. I am not surprised at the open threat issued by the spokesperson of the House leadership. He believes that the House has the powers of God. Perhaps it will be wise to remind him of the saying that “wise men speak because they have something to say, while fools because they have to say something” Due to lack of what to say, the statement quoted my earlier writing so generously that it constituted half the Press Release. They can do well to accept that their actions with respect to the purported removal of the former Deputy Governor and the assumption of the Speaker as Acting Governor have been declared illegal by a competent Court of Law. This legal indictment should have sobered them rather make them more arrogant. It is only an ignorant person that will claim that a matter before a competent Court of Law is foreclosed. It is a shame that a spokesperson of the leadership of a House of Assembly could refer to a matter before the courts as history. Perhaps if the House of Assembly wants relevant agenda to consider for discussion let me set some for them: 1. They should address the confusion and contradictions of the PDP which issued a statement that the ruling of the Federal High Court will not be appealed by it or its membership even though it is on record that the Speaker of the House had already instructed his lawyers to appeal the judgement. 2. The only charge the PDP had against Mijinyawa Kugama who was the Party Chairman was that he came from the same Local Government with Governor Nyako. Kugama held no statutory office under the Nigerian Constitution. Today, both the Governor and the Speaker of the House are from the same Madagali Local Government, what then will happen? 3. That Adamawa State has had seven Governors in seven years and three Governors in less than three months and all through the Governments were weighed down by series of litigations is a major recipe for instability and stagnation. How do We avert that in the future? These are patriotic concerns that should merit their attention and not issuing threats on free citizens who express opinions anchored on law, legality and justice. Who is afraid of their threat anyway? Certainly not Ahmad Sajoh! If the Speaker, the House of Assembly or their spokespersons believe Nyako’s illegal removal from office is a foregone issue, let them ask the Courts to halt all processes related to the matter. I recall that they issued the same threat when I released a Press Statement on 15th July, 2014 that Barr. Bala James Ngillari had not resigned in the eyes of the Law. Today I am vindicated. I am confident that in my insistence that Governor Nyako was illegally removed and that the illegality will be nullified by the Courts, I will still be vindicated. Let me conclude that for the avoidance of doubt and for all intent and purposes, the anger of the House Leadership for which this latest threat is issued, is due to the role I played in testifying in Governor Bala Ngillari’s Court case. For that I have no regrets or apologies. Governor Mukhtar Yero of Kaduna State on Saturday in Abuja picked the Peoples Democratic Party nomination and expression of interest form to re-contest the governorship position in the 2015 general elections. Yero was accompanied to the national headquarters of the party by his deputy and members of the state House of Assembly. Others present at the occasion were senators from the state, 22 out of the 23 local government chairmen in the state, members of the state executive council and other PDP stalwarts. Yero assumed the governorship position in Kaduna State following the death of Governor Patrick Yakowa in an helicopter crash on December 15, 2012. The state’s Director of Media and Publicity, Alhaji Amed Maiyaki, who spoke to newsmen on the sidelines of the event, said Yero’s decision to re-contest the position was based on calls by stakeholders in the state. Maiyaki said that though the state had its challenges, it had done very well under the leadership of Yero. He said the governor since assumption of office had positively transformed the different sectors of the state’s economy. The governor, he said, had completed most of the projects initiated by his predecessor and had given scholarship to indigent students to study abroad. Maiyaki expressed optimism that Yero would be returned by the electorate in 2015. http://theeagleonline.com.ng/2015-yero-picks-nomination-form/

Fear of another bloody ‘Ember months’ again gripped residents of the twin cities of Effurun-Warri and other towns in Delta state, following the killing of the daughter of a former military administrator of Kano state, Retired Brig General Dominic Oneya. Ms Frances Oneya, mother of four, was on her way home from the bank when she was shot dead by armed robbers around JW Junction on Ovie Palace Road, Effurun in broad daylight on Friday morning. The incident occurred on the same day that about 10 armed robbers laid siege to the Effurun/Ughelli axis of the East/West highway. The Police Public Relations Office, Delta Command, DSP Celestine Kalu, who confirmed the report, said the robberies were perpetrated by the same gang that plundered and pillaged on the Ughelli expressway. Kalu, who spoke in a telephone chat with our reporter, said the robbers made away with the woman’s handbag. She said, “She (victim) went to the bank to withdraw money. I think they followed her (from the bank). They shot her and took her handbag but they did not know that the money was not in the bag; it was in the boot of the car.” The police image-maker further revealed that the car was recovered along with the N250, 000 cash, adding that the police were on the trail of the robbers. The Nigeria Governors’ Forum, NGF, on Friday, congratulated Bala Ngilari on his inauguration as the Adamawa State governor with a charge to run an inclusive administration and ensure delivery of the dividends of democracy to the people of the state. The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja had on Wednesday ruled that Mr. Ngilari, who was deputy to the impeached governor, Murtala Nyako, be sworn in as substantive governor. The court asked the acting governor, Umaru Fintiri, to vacate office and directed the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to halt the bye-election earlier scheduled for Saturday. In a statement by its Director General, Asishana Okauru, the NGF-led by the Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Amaechi, described the ruling of the court as a landmark judgement and a plus for the judiciary and the Nigerian democracy. It also praised Mr. Ngilari for standing firm and remaining undaunted while the case lasted and asked political leaders to always explore court processes in resolving political disagreements. “The Forum sees the ruling as a land-mark judgment and a plus for the Judiciary and the Nigerian democracy. We urge the judiciary to remain steadfast, bold and independent in anticipation of several other electoral cases as we move closer to the 2015 general elections. “We also seize this opportunity to call on political leaders to always explore court processes in resolving political disagreements. “We praise the new governor for standing firm and remaining undaunted while the case lasted and charge him to be inclusive in his administrative style and ensure the delivery of true democracy dividends to the people of Adamawa state. “Most importantly, we call on other stakeholders to be mindful of potential pitfalls caused by over-zealousness as this would impact negatively on our thriving democracy.” It is not clear if Mr. Ngilari, who is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, will place his membership with the Mr. Amaechi-led NGF as his former boss, Mr. Nyako, who was a member of the party before decamping to the All Progressives Congress, APC, last November. The forum split into two following the rejection of the result of its election in May 2103 by some governors led by the Plateau State Governor, Jonah Jang. Mr. Amaechi had defeated Mr. Jang by 19 votes to 16. In a related development the Chairman PDP Governors Forum Governor Godswill Akpabio says the Forum welcomes the newly sworn-in Governor of Adamawa state following the pronouncement by the Federal High Court in Abuja. The Governor made this known while speaking to State House Press corps after an audience with the President. Meanwhile, Governor Akpabio has promised to complete all on going projects in his state before his exit from office. http://www.nta.ng/governor-akpabio-welcomes-newly-sworn-in-governor-of-adamawa-to-pdp-governors-forum/ https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/more-news/169308-governors-forum-congratulates-ngilari-urges-him-to-form-inclusive-govt.html |
