Politics / PMB Can’t Clean Up PDP's 16 Years Mess In 30 Days, I'm Standing By Him – Tinubu by msmon(m): 5:43am On Jul 15, 2015
President Muhammadu Buhari last night
implored members of the All
Progressives Congress (APC) to forgo
their differences as well as their power
of influence in the interest of the country
and the party.

He said for the party to achieve its
manifestos of addressing issues of
security, economy, employment and
corruption, such sacrifice was necessary.
The president, who made this call when
he hosted the party’s leadership to a
Ramadan breakfast at the new banquet
hall of the presidential villa, restated his
stance that “if we don’t kill corruption,
corruption will kill Nigeria.”

Also, APC national leader and former
Lagos State governor, Asiwaju Ahmed
Tinubu, who was at the breakfast,
responded to criticisms by the Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP) that the Buhari
administration was too slow, saying the
APC government cannot clean the 16-
year mess of the PDP in 30 days.

In his speech, President Buhari recounted
how the APC surmounted many
obstacles and became strong enough to
dislodge the PDP, and stressed the need
for party members to forget their
differences and unite for the sake of the
country.

He said, “I always like to go down
memory lane to show how lucky we are
as a political group. At no stage was the
decision taken by chance; it was all
deliberate. The leaders of the parties felt
the only way to wrest power from the
PDP was for us to come together.

“I in particular was scared after previous
failures of the elections of 2003, 2007
and 2011. We dissolved our various
parties to form APC; then we applied to
INEC. For once, I was grateful to INEC.
We had gone with nine people to INEC to
apply and INEC advised us that we
needed at least 25 people across the
people to form a political party.

“We were able to go back, raise 35
members across the country and then
successfully registered the party. INEC
then informed the federal government
that we had met the requirements, hence
we cannot be denied registration. Many
doubting Thomases said merger had
never succeeded in Nigeria but here we
are.”

Urging the party members to close ranks,
the president said: “I went into this long
explanation so that you will appreciate
how far we have come, and for a society
as ours, if we respect the constitution,
then all the greed and problems will be a
thing of the past.

“We should just look at Nigeria as
Nigerians. No matter the level you are,
loosen your influence so that we can
help achieve the manifestos – security,
economy, employment and corruption –
because if we don’t kill corruption,
corruption will kill Nigeria. We have to
ensure that people we bring forward are
those that will move the society
forward.”

Buhari further commended Tinubu for his
support and words of encouragement,
saying it was important to reflect on their
journey in order for them to appreciate
how lucky they were as a political group.
Earlier, Tinubu who described the APC as
Armoured Personnel Carrier which
represents the diversity of Nigeria,
thanked the president for availing them
the opportunity of breaking fast with him
and bringing together people for various
backgrounds regardless of religious
affiliations.

He said, “We believe this diversity will
continue to propel us for economic
growth under your leadership. This is the
first Ramadan after the election; we
thank God for cutting down the
opponents’ 60 years of fake promises to
16 years.

“I heard they say we are slow. Yes, we
didn’t campaign to be fire-fighters, but
planners – and meticulous ones at that.
A latrine pit of 16 years can’t be cleaned
up in 30 days because the mess is much.
“Mr. President you started well; you hit
the ground running. You promised
Nigerians that you’ll address security and
your first meeting to ECOWAS was on
security because we cannot fight alone.
“You have been to others places. If they
forgot G7 we will remind them. We have
faith in you, Mr. President; we have faith
in your capacity and uprightness”. The
APC leader pledged that the party would
continue to support the president, and
“no matter what they are saying, we are
not re-running the election until four
years’ time.”

“NASS Leadership Crisis: I Stand By Buhari’s Position – Tinubu

Speaking to journalists after the break of
Ramadan fast at the presidential villa,
APC national leader Ahmed Tinubu said
he stood by President Buhari’s position
that the party’s wish is supreme
concerning the leadership crisis in the
National Assembly.

He noted that the crisis rocking the
National Assembly over its leadership
was one area where he was very
cautious of his position and utterances.
“I still want to keep my side of the
interpretation or analysis to be able to
achieve a resolution of the matter as
quickly as possible,” he said.

“I am backing what the president has
carefully enumerated and articulated to
the party. The party is supreme. The
party must have disciplined leadership
and followers. The party’s process must
be respected because that is the
confidence and the trust of the people.”
He, however, noted that disagreement
was normal in politics.

“In every environment, we should conflict
– that is politics, and conflict resolution
mechanism would be applied to resolve
all the problems so we are there. There
is honour in every struggle and every
competition; there must be honour in
victory, too.”

On how APC should avoid the mistakes
of the PDP, Tinubu maintained that the
party was different.

He said, “We cannot be PDP, we are
APC, we will not repeat their mistakes.
We know their errors, we understand
what Nigeria wanted and Nigerians gave
this party victory because of our
manifesto.

“We are pro-people, we are progressives.
We have had a conservative government
in the last 16 years; this is a progressive
party, just coming in barely 30 days ago.
We understand the hope of Nigerians; we
understand the expectations of
Nigerians. We believe in that expectation
and in our promise of prosperity to the
people. We will not change that.”

Tinubu denied the speculation that he
had a soiled relationship with the
president over some his demands that
had not been met by the party.

He said, “I have no demands of the
party. If you understand what party
politics and leadership is all about, it is
about loyalty and commitment to the
values which the leadership believes in. I
believe in what the president believes in,
I respect him and I stand firmly loyal to
his cause.

“So, you can go to any length of
speculation that you might want. I have
not responded to all of that because I
understand the president and the
president understands me clearly.”

Also present at the break of Ramadan
fast were former Rivers State governor,
Rotimi Amaechi; his Bayelsa counterpart,
Timipre Sylva; APC chieftain, Mr. Sam
Nda-Isaiah, and APC spokesman, Alhaji
Lai Mohammed, among others.

Politics / Retired Generals Jostle For Civil Defence Top Job — Leadership Newspaper by msmon(m): 5:26am On Jul 15, 2015
Nigeria’s seat of power, Aso Villa, has known little peace since the official declaration of President Muhammadu Buhari as the winner of the March 28 presidential election, with retired Army, Navy and Police chiefs turning the Villa to a Mecca of sorts, seeking to succeed incumbent commandant-general of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Prof Ade Abolurin.

The lobbyists, who mostly hail from the northern and western parts of the country, seem to be oblivious of the fact the Civil Defence boss, Abolurin, who carefully nurtured this young organisation from inception and is due for retirement this July, had groomed capable hands to take over the mantle of leadership at the agency.
LEADRSHIP learnt that Prof Abolurin, who is billed to officially step aside on July 17 after serving the Corps for 10 years – two consecutive five-year tenures from July 17, 2005-July 17, 2015 – has refused to favour any officer, insisting that only merit and fairness will determine who the mantle should fall on.

LEADERSHIP reports that in the aftermath of President Muhammad Buhari’s takeover of power, syndicates have invaded Abuja, with the crème de la crème of the Nigerian polity and ex-service chiefs coming to congratulate the president. A large number of them, however, visit to lobby to succeed Abolurin and other positions in the new government. Some of the lobbyists are godfathers who seek the Civil Defence top job for their protégés. A host of them are exploiting all avenues to claw their way into PMB’s cabinet.

As the Presidency continues its compilation of list of would-be heads of paramilitary agencies, chairman and members of the Civil Defence, Fire, Immigration and Prisons Board (CDFIPB), some of these jostlers who retired either from the Navy, Army and Police, are getting more frenzied as the days go by in their bid to land the job which they see as a plum one.

According to another source who pleaded not to be named, “even when the process of nomination is not yet completed as nominees must be confirmed by PMB, as with all things political in Nigeria, the nomination and confirmation process can be tricky, time-consuming and corruption-laden. Anything can happen at any time to dim or enhance one’s chances, and so, many lobbyists are not leaving anything to providence.”

He revealed that when he chided one of those jostling intensively for the Civil Defence top job, he responded thus: “You have to be a fool to think that your skills, strength of character, education and intelligence alone will get you anywhere in Nigeria. Perhaps, for smaller and inconsequential positions, but to succeed Abolurin or ambassadorial posts, you’ll need far more than the content of your resume.”

Further investigations revealed that other appointment syndicates and lobby groups who cannot access the Villa usually operate from corner shops, traditional rulers’ palaces and, sometimes, target nocturnal political meetings, especially of PMB’s close associates.

Findings also unravelled that most of the syndicates often claim to have some kind of relationship either with the president or his wife. In some cases, they drop the names of powerful APC leaders like those of national leader Asiwajo Tinubu, national chairman John Oyegun and the traditional ruler of Daura, Buhari’s hometown, among others.
The source told LEADERSHIP that one outstanding feature of the arrowheads of the syndicates is that they all have one title or the other.

He said, “They must be royal fathers, a professor, a Dr, an engineer, architect, surveyor, or accountant, etc. Whatever professional or academic title they claim to have, they usually preface it with a chieftaincy title, i.e. chief Dr, or chief professor, or something like that.”

Meanwhile, a security expert, Mr Abokom Ebetem, has advised President Buhari to go for only credible and competent individuals from within the Corps, who have been nurtured by the outgoing NSCDC boss, as they perfectly understand the mandates and mission of the Corps and would be best suited to sustain and even improve on the landmark achievements made by the Corps in its short span of life.

Ebetem argued that picking an external person who lacks knowledge of the Corps’ core mandates as well as strategies outlined by the agency is capable of jeopardising the giant strides attained by the Abolurin administration.

He specifically advised Buhari not to appoint external elements as they are capable of causing crisis for his administration, since their training and programmes differ. He advised that even if the head of the agency will come from within, the selection should be based on professionalism and merit and not tribalism.

He also commended the incumbent, Abolurin, for adopting a non-interference stance in the selection of his successor.

LEADERSHIP learnt that apart from NSCDC top job, the lobbyists, from both within and outside, are also intensely targeting the top jobs in other paramilitary agencies under the Ministry of Interior, including the Nigeria Immigration Service, Prisons and Fire Service, etc.

Findings revealed plans are underway to direct all incumbent chief executives of the aforementioned agencies to forward their retirement letters to the president.

Investigations further revealed that while the president is determined to stamp his imprint and take ownership of the new cabinet, he is very much indebted to many political groups who have a hand in his decisive victory in the March 28 elections.

Another expert, Mr. Ahmed Hassan of the Private Guards Security spoke in the same vein as Ebetem: that putting an external person at the helm of affairs at the NSCDC would be harmful to the outfit.
Hassan also asserted that appointing such lobbyists would amount to a breach of the Act which established the Corps.

He said: “Having read thoroughly the Act which states that commandant-general of the Corps must be in-house members, I think it will be out of place for these lobbyists, syndicates and godfathers to waste their time.

“Above all, if considered, these external persons may not even be well-equipped to uphold Civil Defence’s zero tolerance to corruption. The man, Abolurin, has inculcated the bold steps and strategies of redressing unholy behaviour exhibited by most security personnel.

“I strongly feel that in order to effectively fight vandalism, protect the civil populace and sustain the giant strides attained by the incumbent, and insider should be given the mantle,” he said.

Lagos is known as the city of hustlers in Nigeria not
just because of its population but also because of
the opportunities it brings with it.

It is no secret that Lagos is the state that most
Nigerians migrate to in search of greener pastures.
A walk around the metropolis will tell part of the
story to anyone keen for details.

In Lagos you find the beggars, the philanthropists,
the rich, the poor hustling to make a living. To
better express this, a Naij.com photojournalist
roamed Lagos state to show the extent to which
youths in the state go to find jobs.

Career / 7 Reasons Nigerian Youths Are Highly Desperate For White Collar Jobs by msmon(m): 5:49pm On Jul 13, 2015
There are a great number of Nigerian graduates out
there, still seeking white collar jobs (WCJs), despite
the fact that their arrow has not hit the target,
which is the job of their dream.

Frankly speaking, these youths have a share of the
blame, as well as the Nigerian society.

Youths are disinterested in trying their hands on new
things. Some of them still want to be spoon-feed.

Nigerian graduates are seriously becoming frustrated
everyday. They are doing all sorts of things to
secure WCJs. They put forward several reasons why
they want WCJs.

Lets take a look at these reasons why the graduates
still cling their hope on WCJs

1. Employability is based on Certificate: The
Nigerian educational system is tailored around
having an academic qualification. There is hardly
any employer that ask a job seeker if he has
practical skills.

2. Youths are not innovative: A good number of
Nigerian graduates suffer from mental-laziness.
They see it as degrading to their status if they take
up unskilled profession. They cannot think outside
the box.

3. Luxury: The fantasies that surround WCJs make
the youths salivate for these jobs. They see top
bankers and doctors in expensive suits and porsche
vehicles. They believe that the only way to getting
such luxury is to take up WCJs.

4. Respect given by society: The Nigerian society
does not help matters. People value someone if he
says he works in an organisation or a company, even
if his salary is a peanut.

5. Financial package: When graduates hear the huge
remuneration of oil and telecommunication
companies, they do not think of anything else than a
passion to have these jobs.

6. Background: Some parents always insist that their
children will do no other job than WCJs, even if such
children have stayed at home for donkey years after
graduation.

7. Unfavourable economy: The poor living standards
in Nigeria, where poverty is the order of the day is
not helping issues. There is hardly any opportunity
for an alternative. There are no available channels
for youths to secure collateral-free loans to start a
business. As all these are non-extant, they continue
searching for WCJs.

The piece of advice for the Nigerian youths is that
they should find a time to reflect and think on their
strength, in order to find a way of making
themselves financially-independent, and not
financially-dependent after years of graduation.

Politics / Most Boko Haram Members Are Christians – Report by msmon(m): 9:17am On Jul 13, 2015
Shocking revelation emerged that most members of
the Boko Haram insurgents are Christians.

The insurgents have attacked many churches in the
country, killing several worshipers.

According to a obtained report by Radio France
International, Nigerian researchers met in Paris this
week at the European Conference on African
Studies and took part in a round table entitled
“Within and around Boko Haram in Nigeria” where it
was revealed that most people terrorizing the
continent are from the Christian community.

The report authored by a certain Daniel Finnan
claimed that, their decision to join the violent group
was due to lack of jobs and the money involved.

According to the report, “The real problem of Boko
Haram is that no one has actually infiltrated them
or if they have, they haven’t come out, or they’ve
joined them. So the level of knowledge about the
insides of Boko Haram is remarkedly small.”

On how many Christians that were forced to join
the bloodthirsty group, the report claimed, “It’s
almost certainly bound to be about 5,000, but some
people put the numbers up way higher. The other
problem is that of course as far as we know it’s
quite a good job, at one point you could be paid 400
dollars a month for just simply joining them, you
wouldn’t have to go fighting, you would spend your
first months doing logistics or training. It’s quite
profitable joining Boko Haram because you not only
loot places, but you share the loot out at the end.
And the third point that I think is important to
realise is that there are plenty of Christians who
are part of Boko Haram because it’s a job”.
