FamilyRe: Should your wife know from the beginning of your Intentions To Be Polygamous by MSN1(m): 9:52pm On Jul 04, 2024
Sapasenator:
Honestly, I have heard the above statements parroted over and over again on this forum and, I find it hard to hold myself especially when the above statement is totally wrong and does not hold water in real life.

Dear lady, no polygamous man will ever tell you they would marry a second wife at the beginning of your relationship, it never happens and will never happen. Most men who go into a marriage do so with a great deal of love/infatuation, hoping the union will be forever and will never know what will happen in the marriage let's say ten(10) years down the lane.

Most will not even know they may need to marry a second wife from the beginning of the relationship. Hindsight, they say, is 20/20. Everyone marries to have a happy home with the hope the union will be for a lifetime and when the needs of the man are not being met by the wife or he grows unhappy in the marriage, he considers the option of a second wife. I am only making a religious basis for this argument, I can also argue from the Nigerian cultural standpoint.
Polygamous tendencies may also develop over time in a relationship due to a concourse of circumstances entirely outside of the control of the husband. Please, try to understand us.

Statements like " he should have told the wife of his intentions from the beginning" do not make any iota of sense from my standpoint. How exactly do you know early on in your relationship that you would divorce your wife in the future or marry a second wife? One of my acquaintances recently killed his wife in a domestic conflict, how was he supposed to know from the beginning of the relationship that he was going to kill his wife?

People evolve and change over time, and so do their needs, desires, and quest for happiness. If you are married to a Muslim in a Nikkah ceremony for example, it is reasonable to infer that you would be ok with your husband marrying a second wife in the future, any other argument you make like, "he should have told the wife from the outset" will simply have no basis in logic. It is there in the Quran except you are not a Muslim woman as you are not allowed to pick and choose the parts of the holy scripture to adhere to.

If you are married in a church ceremony and a Christian, discussing the Idea of a second wife will be totally absurd, flies in the face of logic and the husband will clearly be in the wrong.

My position above is based solely on the assumption that the couples are based in Nigeria and subject to the laws and customs in Nigeria. I know some commenters are trying to conflate Nigeria's socio-marital situations with that of the western countries.

When we address issues, let's be pragmatic and real instead of conflating our personal ideologies with realities and facts.

To summarize my rants above, a Muslim man, married to a Muslim woman, is allowed by the Muslim holy scripture to marry more than one wife, and nowhere in the Quran is the permission of the first wife required for him to do so. Also, It is illogical for you to expect a man to give you polygamous notice in advance of the relationship.

I do not encourage domestic violence and as a strong adherent of stoic philosophy believe strongly in self-control and non-violence means in the resolution of conflicts.
Sorry but NOT sorry, Your post is devoid of common sense and rationality!

Who on Earth told u that, all men would neva let their spouse know if they wanted to go into polygamy?...You ought to have used majority, not the hasty generalization u did.

Men are polygamous in nature, YES but that doesn't mean, respecting someones emotions, by being even blunt, should be totally ruled out, I CAN NEVA DO THAT.

I am a guy with objective reasoning and its totally disrespectful and unreasonable to go into polygamy without the knowledge of ur spouse.

As 4 Yul 4 Edochie, that guy na MUMU! and as 4 his ex wife, she is a true woman, NEVA TAKE UNREASONABLE SHIT FROM ANY MAN, I love her style wahlahi!

Most times, sane people like us are just too pushed to the extreme, hence the reason we waste our mentions on most of ur type here on N.L.
The fact that, a lot of women and MEN (Yes, MEN. I know A LOT of men I can NEVER wish my enemy sef to marry) these days are not marriageable, does not erase the FACT that, a lot of women out there are just too amazing.

And to think u don't know the supposed lady and you see and know a lot of good women around in marriages, yet turn blind eyes and generalize childishly, tells a lot of your maturity and I.Q level.

I have wonderful sisters and know a lot of ladies that are elevating and giving their husbands commitment, love, wonderful kids, happiness, satisfaction and wonderful homes. So, by ur nasty generalization, they are not worth marrying?.

Sir, we all have, @ one point or the other experienced failed relationships but does that erase the fact that, Healthy relationships exist?, absolute NO.

Please, if u think u have been broken beyond repair, hence your childish statement or maybe u are doing it for stupid validations, PLEASE FIX UR SELF QUIETLY, like everyone of us has and will continue doing, HAVE A NICE DAY.

Families (extended) that cooperate and love each other are always rich. Love and harmony brings wealth among family cycle.

Families that doesn't cooperate and hate each are always struggling, maybe poor. Hatred , malice and wickedness brings backwardness, poverty among family cycle.

What destroyed Abiola family wealth is hatred and malice among his children. Abiola was good man but didn't raise his children very well. Lack of love and cooperation among his household destroyed Abiola dynasty.

I must strive to cooperate and love my wife when I get married .And again raise my children to love and cooperate with one another. I mean make them look out for one another. It helps
Nice 1 O.P, I have made posts on this issue severally, and also share with people, this simple secret of most wealthy families. in fact, lack of love and unity in a family, is the foundation of generational backwardness.

A man's net worth includes his houses, shares, landed properties etc. A person may not have 500k cash in the bank but may be worth a 100m.

In my organisation, the average worker has a house and its worth more than 30m. It may have taken them years to build but its theirs. Their monthly salary may be 200k but they have property worth over 30m over the years.

Go and ask your elderly relatives how they managed to own properties even with their small income and the worth of such properties.

Go online and see the cost of cars recently, it has skyrocketed but people are still buying. Nigerians are not as wretched as being portrayed for you to say 29m naira net worth makes you the 1%. That's an insult to Nigerians.

Sure, they are extremely poor people who earn less than a $1 a day but your data is extremely false.
HONESTLY, I read carefully ALL the quotes and mentions here and I can boldly tell u that> MEHN, U FALL MY HAND!
Some quotes u made were extremely unnecessary, how can u expect people to reason above their I.Q level?. It takes less than 3 quotes to detect I.Qs.

For a post that clearly stated, less than N30m to consider yourself wealthy and a lot are talking childishly, tells a lot about our low standard of education and thinking faculty in naija.

It is obvious even to a secondary school kid that, N30m worth CANNOT classify someone among middle class not to talk of being wealthy in 1% category. N200m worth sef, IS NOT ENOUGH TO BE IN top 1% sef.

Who considers someone without a moderate house in a mid class location, assets that runs in good millions, reasonable bank account, at least a moderate decent car, a business or job that worth millions, mid range schools for kids and access to at least, 2 nutritious square meal per day, among the middle class?. I guess 30m worth can afford that lifestyle in their dreams, not to talk of the wealthy 1% that are balling big time.
The ONLY definition of Wealth or Rich in this context is, HAVING EXPENSIVE- LUXURIOUS THINGS IN ABUNDANCE and its obvious such a little amount, CANNOT get even a decent car, not to talk of having LUXURIES abundantly.

I recently came across an old time family friend on FB, Guess what?
This is a girl that had a very big injury that refused to heal for more than 12 years, whenever we visited, this girl always stayed indoors, no friend to play with, always covering her injury wit cloth, feeling sober and rejected.
The mom spent a lot in hospitals and churches before they resorted to leave her to her fate, No one would have ever taught she would even live for even 5 years, That was in 2005. Guy, as we speak presently, She is very healthy, a N.C.E holder, happily married with a bouncing baby girl, while a lot of her age group feeling sorry for her then, are still battling to get education and men in their lives.

What God cannot do broda, can NEVER exist!. His ways are very funny and amazing, He picks the weakest, the most rejected, the dumbest, the unexpected and places him in the highest places. All these we can see all around us but we always turn blind eyes and see things from myopic angles.

Your story is a pathetic one, but I can sure relate…truth be told, the guy is into you…but there are some things he’s not comfortable with about you…and whenever he brings it up, you makes no sense of it.

Again, a man who is passionate about is career finds women who are clingy annoying.

And been groomed in the states…your mentality will be different from his, like in the area of house shores, cooking and probably shopping.

From your description and of him, he is not a scammer, if not…nothing stops him from making the moves for good 4 years and good enough, you said he has is own money.

Again, he might has said what he told you of marrying his elder to out of anger.

My advice…work on yourself, especially does things he has pointed to you…and it seems you assume a lot and monitors his every moves.

Relationship is all about knowing what works for your partner and give some level of tolerance.

I’m also surprised that you guys lived for over two years and he didn’t impregnate you, or even make a move on marriage…there’s something you’re not telling.

***I can attest to the fact that whatever he said is out of anger, 3months is just too early to assume that he has abandoned you.

No man leaves a woman, who stood by him, when he had nothing.
Just listen to yourself @ d bolded then check your brain if u are being objective or biased. I bet u didn't read the part where she said that, the fool was always messing around with young girls ( with someone's money he ought to be planning life together with), so as a girl that have sacrificed everything, WHAT MESSAGE DOES THAT SEND TO U? Because its obvious u are blaming OP 100% and justifying that ingrate's wickedness.
Sometimes I wonder what u people benefit from being gender biased or unreasonable. A man can be evil, same with women. Go to the first page and read what a nairalander related to me and u will realize that, evil is not a gender centered thing, rather; an issue of individual difference. Even if OP had done anything very bad, why not send her away peacefully, since he knows how she had given up everything to relocate to Nigeria. DO U EVEN KNOW WHAT IT TAKES TO FALL BACK TO SQUARE ZERO?

@ OP, please don't listen to anyone here trying to make u feel u did something wrong that prompted the idiot to dump u like thrash. Even if u did, he would have @ least, inform his family and work out means to send u back home, D GUY NA IDIOT!

Pick up your broken self and move back home because, greater problems and heartbreaks will arise in your continuous staying with his family. THERE IS NOTHING LEFT FOR U THERE and NEVER allow the idiot to use u as a consolation or means to fall back to, when things later goes south for him, U ARE WAY TOO GOOD TO BE TOSSED LIKE DICE. Move now, when u still have your life and sanity, Trust me,
No amount of money can replace any of those.

I wish u the best of luck.

So now I sit here in SHOCK….
I honestly don’t know what to do. His family is also shocked.

We’ve had our ups and downs but I honestly never thought he would outright abandon me in Nigeria while he goes to another country. What kind of person does thishuh

The Five Lessons from BBC’s Expose on TB Joshua

By Julius Ogunro

The BBC’s three-part documentary on the late TB Joshua: The Disciples: The Cult of TB Joshua, highlights the disturbing abuse that took place in his church for decades. Here are the five lessons from the revelation:

1. Anyone can be psychologically manipulated and controlled regardless of their education and class. A barely literate man, TB Joshua was a master manipulator who dominated people far superior people to him in education and class. And it did not matter that they were black, white or yellow. They ate from his hands, tolerated abuse and would probably have committed great crimes if he asked them to do so. They probably did.

How could he do this without a university degree or great formal education? Joshua probably had ‘native intelligence’ and had honed his art through trial and error over time. What is clear is that at his peak, he had become a master of mass hypnotism and mind control, as he was in the use of public relations and the media. The outcome was the man who ran what seemed from the outside a compassionate religious ministry but beneath the glamour was a devilish schemer, rapist, hypnotist and master manipulator.

2. Nigeria lacks adequate regulation and oversight across many sectors. Despite documented allegations of long-term abuse from former members of the Synagogue Church, authorities did not investigate or intervene over a period spanning multiple years. Bisola Johnson, a former Synagogue devotee and prominent voice in the documentary, has had a video on YouTube detailing Joshua’s crimes for years, yet no one paid attention. The “Prophet” appeared to have a pass to do as he wished. Even when the guest house in the church premises collapsed in 2014, killing about 116 people, the majority of them South Africans, he was not brought to book, despite the coroner’s report indicting him for criminal negligence.

Had he been alive when this documentary came out, it is safe to say nothing would have happened to him.

3. Nigeria’s religious space is permissive. Religious leaders seem to have the liberty to engage in any bad behaviour, given the lack of regulations in that sector. This is due to the sensitivity of religion in the country, which is often viewed through the lens of competition between the two predominant faiths of Christianity and Islam.

The last time a government agency attempted to actively regulate religious groups by proposing a code of governance, it didn't end well. The Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRN) had initiated a set of reforms, requiring the tenure of heads of religious groups to not exceed 20 years, among others. The agency’s head, Jim Obaze was sacked following the uproar that greeted the proposal. Now, the country’s political elite seem to have conceded that space entirely to religious leaders, shady or not. It is this lax environment that produced men like Joshua and other predatory religious figures hiding in plain sight.

4. The traditional media in Nigeria is inept, weak and ineffective. It took the BBC to finally highlight Joshua's crimes that had been ‘begging’ to be reported for years. There are many important issues, of great corruption, abuse and injustice burbling beyond the surface, waiting to be broken.

The Nigerian mainstream media appears not interested and seems to have taken a vow not to conduct serious investigations, or engage in in-depth analyses. Only the online media appears active and the best is the faction represented by a small pool of reporters led by David Hudeyin and Fisayo Soyombo.

Perhaps, these media organizations’ precarious financial situations make their distaste for investigative journalism understandable. They earn most of their revenue from advertisements and exposing corruption or abuse may hurt the government or big corporations which provides them with advert revenues. So they limit themselves to reporting the news and other boring stuff. Or, perhaps, it is because of the speed with which news is broken these days due to the prevalence of social media that leaves them no time to conduct proper investigations. Whatever the case, Nigeria’s mainstream media space is dull, with all of them reporting about the same things without flair and flavour.

5. Psychological and emotional abuse can be as devious and bad as physical one. The question that is frequently asked by those who saw the documentary is: Why didn’t they leave, after all, he didn’t put a gun in their heads. However, these people tend to minimize emotional and psychological abuse and control, which, in some cases, can be as bad or even worse than physical abuse.

Emotional and psychological abuse involves manipulation, control and isolation, causing the victim serious nonphysical damage that may affect his long-term emotional and mental well-being. The ‘scars’ are often invisible but difficult to heal.

Let us understand that these victims had given up their identity, their family, their education and indeed their lives for Joshua. It was therefore tough for them to wake up to the understanding that it was all for nothing and that they had been conned. In many cases, going back to their former lives was impossible - relationships had been destroyed, and too much water had passed under the bridge. Victims in such circumstances tend to make excuses for their oppressor and in some cases will serve as props to the abusive institution, demonstrating a form of Stockholm syndrome. They deserve our sympathy and not scrutiny.

Finally, there are still many shady religious figures like Joshua, hiding under the guise of charity and ‘doing God’s work.’ But beneath the glamour of their TV programmes and faux American accent are predatory characters who run slave camps, abuse women and children, and have grown wealthy on the back of these. We must expose these crimes. The victims don’t have to be our friends and relatives to make these revelations. We don’t even need the mainstream media to do this. In this age of the smartphone, everyone can be a citizen journalist. If we fail at this, if we fail to organize our society and our religion in such a way that villains like Joshua are deterred or quickly exposed, then no one can save us.
