London (CNN) A man killed four people, including a police officer, outside the UK Parliament on Wednesday in what British police are looking at as an act of "Islamist-related terrorism."
Scores more people were hurt when the attacker plowed his car through a crowd of people on a bridge over the River Thames, got out of his vehicle and fatally stabbed police officer Keith Palmer, a 15-year-veteran who was unarmed, on the grounds of Parliament.


It was the most lethal terrorist attack in Britain since 2005, when 52 people and four attackers died in the July 7 bombings on the London public transportation system.
The use of a vehicle as a weapon of terror also echoed the methods used in the past year by attackers in Nice and Berlin.
Mark Rowley, Britain's most senior counterterror police officer, told reporters late Wednesday that authorities believe they know the attacker's identity but are not releasing it, and are operating on the assumption the incident was "Islamist-related terrorism."

A man thought to be the main suspect in the truck attack on a Christmas market in Berlin on Monday is dead after Italian police killed him in a shootout in the northern Italian city of Milan on Friday, according to Italy’s interior minister.

Marco Minniti, speaking at a news conference on Friday morning, confirmed that the man killed early Friday was Anis Amri, a 24-year-old Tunisian national.

“The person killed, after a number of inquiries, without any shadow of a doubt, is Anis Amri, the suspect of the terrorist attack in Berlin,” he said. He added that the shootout took place at 3 a.m. local time in Milan’s Sesto San Giovanni neighborhood during a police check.

The failure to capture him following the attack had put the European Union’s security services on high alert.
