Religion / UK Govt Slams £125,000 Fine On Pastor Chris Oyakhilome's TV Channel, Loveworld by MuguVideos: 6:22pm On Mar 31, 2021
Authorities in the United Kingdom have slammed a £125,000 fine on Loveword TV channel, owned by Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, for airing conspiracy theories about Covid-19 that were unproven.

On December 1st 2020, the TV channel had aired a 29-hour programme called the Global Day of Prayer, during which several unfounded claims were made about the coronavirus pandemic. These claims included the notion that the outbreak was ‘planned’, that the ‘sinister’ vaccine can be used to implant ‘nanochips’ that can control and cause harm to members of the public and the theory that the virus was somehow caused by 5G.

Following a detailed investigation by Ofcom, the communications regulatory body in the United Kingdom, it was concluded that the programme breached broadcasting rules by sharing ‘potentially harmful’ claims about COVID19.

This marks the second time in a year that Ofcom has petitioned Loveworld for making unsubstantiated statements about coronavirus.

In a statement released, Ofcom concluded Loveworld’s breach of broadcasting guidelines were ‘serious, repeated and reckless. The broadcasting authority said that the TV channel posed a risk of ‘serious harm’ to viewers who tuned in to watch the programme.

‘Loveworld’s failure to put these unsubstantiated statements into context risked serious harm to its audience,’ the statement said.

Ofcom added that the religious channels had the ‘potential to make people question the measures put in place to curb the spread of the novel Coronavirus.

‘They had the potential to undermine confidence in public health measures put in place to tackle COVID19 at a time when cases, hospital admissions and deaths were rising in the UK, and when people were looking for reliable information given advances in the vaccination programme'' Ofcom statement read

Pastor Oyakhilome has repeatedly expressed doubts about the COVID19 pandemic. Recently, he blasted Christian leaders encouraging their members to take the COVID19 vaccine.

Politics / Court Bars FG From Blocking SIM Cards Not Linked To NIN By April by MuguVideos: 7:47am On Mar 31, 2021
A Federal High Court in Lagos State has barred the Federal Government from blocking SIM cards not linked to National Identity Numbers (NIN), come April.
The Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy had, through the Nigerian Communications Commission, asked operators to block all SIM cards not linked to NIN by April 9, 2021.

This resulted in people disregarding Covid-19 protocols as they trooped to offices of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to get registered.

However, a former second National Vice-President of the Nigerian Bar Association and human rights lawyer, Mr Monday Ubani, filed an originating motion and asked the court to stop the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) from disconnecting all SIM Cards not linked to NINs.

The first to fourth defendants in the suit are the Federal Government, Attorney General of the Federation, The NCC and the Minister of Communication and Digital Economy.

Ubani sought four reliefs including an order that the two-week ultimatum is inadequate and will not only cause him hardship but will also infringe on his fundamental right to freedom of speech and right to own property as provided under sections 39(1) and 44(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).

He also sought an order of the court extending the deadline.
Delivering judgment on March 23, 2021, Justice M.A Onyetenu, ordered that the deadline be extended by two months from the day of the judgement.
The court ruled that the ultimatum of April 9, 2021, be halted as the timeline is grossly inadequate and will not only cause severe hardship, but will likely infringe on the fundamental rights of Nigerians to freedom of expression as guaranteed by Section 39(1)(2) and Section 44(1) of the 1999 Constitution.

The judge further declared that in view of the COVID-19 pandemic and the rising cases in Nigeria presently, the deadline given to over 200 million Nigerians to register their SIM cards with NIN, will lead to a rush, thereby resulting in clustering of Nigerian citizens in a NIN registration centre, subjecting them to the possibility of easily contracting COVID-19.

The judgment read in part, “I therefore make the following orders: An order halting the deadline ultimatum of 9/4/21 given by the 1st (Federal Government) 3rd (NCC) and 4th (Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy) respondents to block all SIM cards that are not registered with the National Identity Numbers at the expiration of deadline.

“An order directing the 1st, 3rd and 4th respondents to extend the deadline for the registration of SIM cards with NIN for at least another two months from the date of this judgment.”

In a letter addressed to the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, the plaintiff asked him to direct the relevant agencies to comply with the court judgment.

In the letter titled, ‘Notification to comply with judgment in FHC/L/CS/1834/2020’, Ubani asked the AGF to prevail on the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, to reconsider the deadline.

The letter read in part, “I therefore urge you to use your good offices to advise the Minister for Communications and Digital Economy, to respect our judiciary by complying with the above stated orders of the court. I further appeal to you to advise the honourable minister to review his stand on the ultimatum for the registration of SIM Cards with NIN beyond the duration declared by the honourable court to at least a year.”

Crime / Fake Army Officer Bags 8 Years Imprisonment For Fraud In Uyo by MuguVideos: 7:35am On Mar 25, 2021
Justice Agatha Okeke of the Federal High Court sitting in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on Wednesday, March 24, sentenced one Henry Mfon Asuquo, a military impostor, to eight years imprisonment on a two-count charge of impersonation and cybercrime brought against him by the Uyo Zonal Office of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

In a statement released by EFCC spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, stated that Asuquo's journey to jail started on January 3, 2019, when operatives of the Commission arrested him at Ayara Street, Nungu Uko in Ibesikpo Local Government Area of the State following a petition by one Itoro Tom.

Itoro had alleged in her petition that Asuquo swapped her Subscriber Identification Module, SIM card, and fraudulently withdrew N 700,000 (Seven Hundred Thousand Naira) from her account domiciled at a new generation bank. Uwujaren said an investigation into the matter revealed that the convict paraded himself as a military officer and in that capacity, he was going about intimidating and defrauding unsuspecting victims of their hard-earned money.

According to the EFCC spokesperson, a search executed in his apartment upon arrest led to the recovery of military uniforms, boots, and bulletproof jackets.

''In the course of interrogation, he admitted to the crime and refunded the sum of N 100,000 (One Hundred Thousand Naira) to the petitioner (Tom).
He was subsequently arraigned on March 27, 2019, on a two-count charge bordering on fraud, impersonation and cybercrime, to which he pleaded “not guilty”.

In the course of trial, counsel to the EFCC, Adebayo Soares, presented two witnesses; Tom Itoro Edet (PW1- the complainant) and Suleiman Abba (PW2 – an operative of the Commission). Some of the exhibits tendered and admitted in evidence include: military kits containing several military shirts and trousers, Techno Spark 3 phone belonging to the convict and correspondences from the Nigeria Army and First City Monument Bank, FCMB.

However, the trial took a new turn on March 5, 2021 when the defence counsel, Dennis Adiaka informed the court of the convict’s intention to change his plea.
The application was granted and Asuquo pleaded “guilty” to the charge against him and the court, thereafter found him guilty and adjourned his sentencing till today, Wednesday March 24, 2021.''

Uwujaren's statement read in part
Delivering judgment in the case on Wednesday, March 24, the presiding judge, Justice Okeke, sentenced Asuquo to 4years imprisonment on each of the two counts preferred against him to run concurrently without the option of a fine.

The judge also ordered the convict to pay his victim a sum of N 600,000 (Six Hundred Thousand Naira) as restitution before he could be released from prison.
In addition, the court ordered the forfeiture of the items used in the commission of the crime, which were recovered from the convict at the point of arrest to the Federal Government.

Politics / I Picked Abaribe From The Gutter - Orji Uzor-kalu by MuguVideos: 8:00am On Mar 24, 2021
Senator Orji Uzor-Kalu has fired back at his colleague, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe over comments he made about him.

Abaribe was the deputy governor when Kalu governed Abia in 1999 but he was impeached before the end of Kalu’s first term.

The Senator representing Abia South had alleged in his book titled “Made in Aba”, that he was impeached because he failed to join the league of “Egusi peelers that thronged Kalu's mother’s abode for whatever reason”.

He said;
“I lasted exactly three years and nine months in office, before I threw in the towel. The bumpy ride ended on 7th March, 2003, when I finally resigned and switched parties.

“The one tenure was characterised by three attempts at impeachment. The one thread that runs through them all is that government can make no error.”
Also speaking in the buildup to Saturday’s bye-election in Aba North and Aba South Federal Constituency, Abaribe said Kalu who has been campaigning for his younger brother who is the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the election, is yet to recover from Kuje prison experience and may find it difficult to understand the new changes in Abia.

Reacting to this, Kalu stated that he picked Abaribe from the gutter and he is little-minded to think he is ashamed of his prison experience.

He said;
“ I picked Abaribe from the gutter. My conspirators thought I would be President in 2023, so they decided to cut my journey short at all cost. Abaribe continued to supply petitions. But you see, these people are not God.

“They think I am ashamed to have gone to prison. I am not and I don’t blame them because they don’t know my relationship with God… Joseph went to Prison, even Obasanjo went to prison. My going to prison is part of my life script and I am thankful God allowed it.
“They are little minds and wicked people who have refused to do any project for their own people. They have kept a centre table for you and called it bridge.
“You can’t even pay common salaries and you are here swearing to God, ‘na me build this road’. The only road the state is constructing is the 600 meters road in Eziukwu which they have been building in the last six years; that’s one year 100 meters.

“Compare my village and these people’s village and you will see how shameless they are. If you can’t build your own village, is it my own you will build?”

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) which was set-up in October 2020 to investigate allegations of human rights abuses against the disbanded special anti-robbery squad (SARS) following the #ENDSARS protests, has award N575.8 million to victims of police brutality.

Deputy director of public affairs in NHRC,Fatimah Mohammed who made the announcement on Friday March 19, said the decision was made at the panel's executive session in which 20 of the petitions which bordered on extrajudicial killing, unlawful arrest, detention, torture, among other issues were considered.

The police were further directed to issue an apology to victims of police brutality by the panel which also agreed that the victims of human rights who got court judgments should be paid.

The statement read;

“The executive session considered 20 out of the 44 petitions on non-adherence by the police of court judgments awarding compensations to victims of human rights violations, and decisions were made on each of the petitions otherwise known as judgment debts,” Mohammed said.

“The petitions on judgment debts of about N575.8million were considered ranging from the award of N200 million to ?120,000 of cases bordering on extra-judicial killing, unlawful arrest and detention.

“Others are cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment and torture, alleged enforced disappearance, confiscation of property, etc.

"The police would have to make a commitment to respect court orders while part of the money will be paid from the human rights compensation funds which are expected to be paid for such purposes.

“Apart from assisting the victims of human rights violations to get their compensation paid, Ogbonna said the panel has also taken a decision to order the police authority to issue apologies to some of the petitioners who have issuance of apology as part of their compensation”.

Foreign Affairs / Queen Elizabeth To Be Removed As Barbados Head Of State In November 2021 by MuguVideos: 11:19am On Mar 16, 2021
The Government of Barbados has announced plans to remove Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state.

The process of Queen Elizabeth's removal would be complete in November 21 when the nation marks the 55th anniversary of independence from Britain.
The decision was taken last year when a government statement said, "The time has come to fully leave our colonial past behind."

Prime Minister Mia Mottley said Barbadians wanted a Barbadian head of state.
"This is the ultimate statement of confidence in who we are and what we are capable of achieving," he said in a speech.

Reacting to the announcement, Buckingham Palace said that it was a matter for the government and people of Barbados.
Quoting a palace source BBC reported that the idea "was not out of the blue" and "has been mooted and publicly talked about many times."
