Nigeria Anti-Corruption Body, EFCC Uncovers N70Billion Fraudulently Realised By Suspended Central Bank Governor, Emefiele, Others Through Multiple Foreign Exchange Rates

Sources told SaharaReporters on Friday that the money was raised by the suspended governor of the apex bank and the Sarkin Hausawa of Lagos, Alhaji Aminu Yaro and his wife through a forex differential fraud facilitated by Emefiele.

money laundering during the 2023 election,” a top source revealed.

“Bawa confronted him that he (Emefiele) and the former Attorney-General of the Federation, Malami were the ones that came to him to raise the memo because they suspected Tinubu had warehouses stuffed with naira notes,” the source added.

SaharaReporters had reported that Emefiele was suspended “sequel to the ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy” according to a release by Willie Bassey, the Director, Information, for the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.

“Mr Emefiele has been directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), who will act as the Central Bank Governor pending the conclusion of investigation and the reforms,” the release further said.

SaharaReporters in February reported how the DSS attempted to arrest Emefiele, but the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Lucky Irabor, shielded him by providing soldiers to guard his residence and office.

The DSS had said it intensified its investigations in order to arrest and prosecute Emefiele, on allegations of terrorism financing and fraud.

SaharaReporters also in February reported that new court documents obtained from the DSS indicted Emefiele for funding “unknown gunmen” terrorising the Southeast region of the country.

DSS investigation revealed that the apex bank governor funded the groups with resources he raised for his failed presidential bid in 2022 and diverted public funds.

Nairaland GeneralNigerian Army Personnel In North-east Lament Non-payment Of Operational Allowanc by Muhammad234(op): 10:56am On Jun 14, 2023
According to the soldiers, attempts to complain have been met with threats by the army authorities.

Nigerian Army personnel fighting Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East have lamented the delay in the payment of their allowances.
According to the soldiers, attempts to complain have been met with threats by the army authorities.
They also called for a review of the allowances to reflect the current economic realities of the country.
“There is a serious issue going on in the army, we, soldiers in the North East fighting Boko Haram are lamenting the delay in payment of operational allowance and other allowances without proper reason; no signal or an address by the various commanders to explain to the soldiers why we are not being paid.
“Formerly, they pay us on 5th or 6th of every month but we haven’t been paid for many months now. The morale of the troops is very low in the front line and will affect our operation, these is a very serious issue on ground now,” a soldier lamented.
“We have families and children, some in the university, and we need these little things to assist ourselves. We have been complaining, we want to go on protest. But we are afraid because, if we protest, it will be easy for them to trace us,” another soldier corroborated.
Still, another personnel confirmed the claims, while expressing fears that the lives of soldiers on the frontline were not guaranteed.
In 2022, SaharaReporters exclusively reported how soldiers expressed concerned over an alleged move by the Nigerian Army authorities to stop payment of operational allowances to troops fighting insurgency.
One of the personnel had in an open letter to former President Muhammadu Buhari said it had “been sleepless nights and teeth nagging since this plot come to the notice of the troops.”
Copied in the letter were the past Vice President of Nigeria, Senate President, the National Security Adviser, Chief of Defence Staff and the Chief of Army Staff.
The open letter by the troops exclusively obtained by SaharaReporters had read, “This is to inform the above addresses and offices which we are aware that they might not be aware of the ongoing plot to deny the troops of their usual monthly operational allowances in the North-East operation thereby bringing instability in the North-Eastern part of the country. This could lead to troops’ withdrawal or negligence to further readiness and continued fight for sustainability of peace and order in the region, especially Adamawa State.
“I am surprised how N45,000 monthly allowances as operational allowances has become the problem why the Nigerian economy is bad. Could it be that the Nigerian Army authorities are doing this to enrich their pocket or mere wickedness of those in the affairs of leadership to depriving the suffering soldiers the right to their allowances?
“It has been sleepless night and teeth nagging since this plot come to the notice of the troops. I fear what comes after such wickedness to the state; I fear the reason for this plot at a time the people of Adamawa are seeing little peace.
“I am calling on the relevant authorities of the above mentioned to look into this corrupt move to self-enrichment. We all know the effort of the president towards sustainability of peace and he has never joked with our monthly allowances.
“The Chief of Army Staff was one of us in the North-East before his appointment as the COAS and understands better our pains and suffering, he has done everything to make sure we are paid monthly as when due; why would any authorities want to destroy his good will and love for the peace of the country?
“I call on the President to look into this issue and fight for us. We have been cheated long before now because we have no one to cry to each time things like this come up by our corrupt Generals in the affairs of leadership.”

SaharaReporters had last year reported that Segun John Owombo, a Superintendent of Customs (SC) in a video, exposed that some of the NCS personnel together with smugglers stole the country’s refined petrol to neighbouring countries.

SaharaReporters had also reported that Owombo was arrested after releasing the video in which he narrated how the smugglers at the Malabo Checkpoint on Belel Road, Adamawa State, were freed by his superiors.

In November, SaharaReporters reported how Owombo was transported to Abuja from Adamawa State to meet with the Comptroller General of Customs while in detention.
SaharaReporters had also reported that Owombo was set to undergo certain tests while in detention.

On the latest development about the 12 personnel being summoned to Abuja, Owombo who is still in detention in Abuja made another video.

Speaking in Yoruba in the video on Saturday, Owombo said, “All the officers at the Checkpoint have been summoned to report to Abuja. As they are going to Abuja, I want all Nigerians to watch out because their escapades one by one will be exposed – particularly, Controller Jalo and one Garba. There is also an OC Liaison, Adamu, he threatened to kill me with a gun; his name is not on the list, but he is also involved.

“I have evidence against all of them. And I am ready to expose them. All Nigerian clerics, please pray for me. Nigeria will be great again. I appreciate my Comptroller-General of Nigerian Customs Service, Col Hammed Ali (retd.).”

SaharaReporters had in April reported that Owombo spent five months in detention.

Owombo was being detained by the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) despite medical documents indicating that he was suffering from kidney disease.

In November, SaharaReporters reported how Owombo was transported to Abuja from Adamawa State to meet with the Comptroller General of Customs while in detention.

SaharaReporters had also reported that Owombo was set to undergo certain tests while in detention.

According to the results of psychiatric test performed at Karu General Hospital in Abuja and obtained by SaharaReporters, history, mental status examination and physical examination carried out at presentation revealed the custom official has no obvious abnormalities.

“The above named is a staff of your organization who presented in the company of his colleague in our facility on the 6th December, 2022 for Psychological Assessment on account of undue suspicion of his colleagues,” the report addressed to the Comptroller General of Custom read.

“History, Mental Status Examination and Physical Examination carried out at presentation revealed no obvious abnormalities, however the Psychological Test administer on him which includes Symptom Checklist - SCL90 and Eyensick Personality-EPQ revealed Paranoid Ideation, Interpersonal Sensitivity and Obsessive Compulsive thought based on his scare in the symptom checklist.

“He is therefore recommended for both Medical treatment and Psychological intervention.”

PoliticsEmefiele Flown From Lagos To Abuja, Arrested While Trying To Flee Nigeria by Muhammad234(op): 11:42am On Jun 10, 2023
More facts have emerged about how the Department of State Services (DSS) arrested Godwin Emefiele, the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

SaharaReporters learnt from top sources that the DSS has flown Emefiele from Lagos to the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, after his arrest on Friday evening.

SaharaReporters further gathered that the embattled CBN governor was fleeing Nigeria through the land border in Lagos when he was arrested by the DSS.

Emefiele has been flown from Lagos to Abuja after the DSS arrested him. He was fleeing through the land border when he was arrested. He was arrested last night in Lagos,” an authoritative source revealed.

SaharaReporters had earlier reported that Emefiele’s arrest came same day the President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, suspended him from office with immediate effect.

SaharaReporters had earlier reported that Emefiele was suspended “sequel to the ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy” according to a release by Willie Bassey, the Director, Information, for the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.

“Mr Emefiele has been directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), who will act as the Central Bank Governor pending the conclusion of investigation and the reforms,” the release further said.

SaharaReporters had in February reported how the DSS attempted to arrest Emefiele, but the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Lucky Irabor, shielded him by providing soldiers to guard his residence and office.

The DSS had said it intensified its investigations in order to arrest and prosecute Emefiele, on allegations of terrorism financing and fraud.

SaharaReporters had also in January reported that how Irabor meddled in the DSS investigation by providing cover for Emefiele, who returned to the country at that time from the United Kingdom and evaded arrest.

The CBN governor had headed to his office with massive security, specifically military protection, following his return to the country.

A senior DSS operative had recounted how the soldiers provided by the CDS countermanded the DSS officials who went to arrest Emefiele at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

“Had we not stood down our officers, there could have been a shootout between our men and the soldiers who had cordoned off the area when the plane landed and escorted the CBN governor to his residence,” he had said.

SaharaReporters had also in February reported that new court documents obtained from the DSS indicted Emefiele for funding “unknown gunmen” terrorising the Southeast region of the country.

DSS investigation revealed that the apex bank governor funded the groups with resources he raised for his failed presidential bid in 2022 and diverted public funds.

It added that the funds and the vehicles Emefiele had planned to use for his presidential campaign were channelled into the funding of “‘Unknown Gunmen’, ESN and elements of IPOB, a proscribed organisation.”

According to the secret police, Emefiele “on several occasions in actions prejudicial to the security of the Nigerian state,” engaged in “criminal conspiracy to divert government resources into suspicious acts of terrorism financing”.

It said the actions of the CBN governor were “meant to subvert and sabotage” the former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

Top government sources shared with SaharaReporters how the investigation linked Emefiele to a well-known terror financier, whom the apex bank governor had sent funds for onward transfer to controversial Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi.

Gumi is known for hobnobbing with terrorists and bandits and advocating that amnesty should be granted to them.

In 2022, one of Gumi’s associates, Tukur Mamu, was arrested and detained by Interpol at Cairo International Airport in Egypt while awaiting a connecting flight to Saudi Arabia.

Upon his return to Nigeria, he was arrested by the DSS over allegations that he was heading to Saudi Arabia to meet with some international terrorists.

Meanwhile, the secret police said their preliminary investigation revealed various acts of terrorism financing, fraudulent activities perpetrated by Emefiele and his involvement in economic crimes of national security dimension including mismanaging the CBN subsidiary, NISRAL, and the central bank’s Anchor Borrowers Programme.

The secret police also accused Emefiele of “fraud, money laundering, round tripping and conferment of financial benefit to self and others.”
