The All Progressives Congress (APC) conducted its presidential primaries on December 10, to choose a flag bearer for the upcoming 2015 elections. About 8,000 APC delegates gathered in Lagos to make a choice between 5 aspirants including former Head of State, Muhammadu Buhari and ex-Vice President, Atiku Abubakar among others. Buhari gave an emotional speech explaining why he is the right candidate to bring about change in Nigeria. Full text below: My Dear Delegates, As you gather for our convention, please remember that history, change and the hopes of Nigeria are there with you. They are there to ask you to perform according to your best judgment and patriotic conscience. I also ask you to do the same. We seek a new Nigeria. It starts with us. It starts today. I have placed myself before you seeking your help to nominate me as your standard bearer for our progressive party, APC. Personal ambition does not drive me in this regard. I seek to be the next president of our beloved nation because I believe I have something to offer Nigeria at this time of multiple crises. Insecurity, corruption, and economic collapse have brought the nation low. Time is past due that we work together to lift Nigeria up. I am ready to lead Nigeria to its rightful future. I have always served Nigeria to the best of my ability. I have always tried to give more to the nation than it has given me. This is the principle of service that has guided my public life. Thus, I am not a rich person. I can’t give you a fistful of dollars or naira to purchase your support. Even if I could, I would not do so. The fate of this nation is not up for sale. What I will give you, and this nation is all of my strength, commitment, sweat and toil in the service of the people. What I can give you is my all. The PDP has been in power much too long for the little good it has done. For the past six years, Nigeria has walked backwards carrying the weight of PDP’s incompetence on its shoulders. Due to its broken leadership, Nigeria has been afflicted by a strange illness. We are a great nation riddled by endless crises. Instead of resolving problems, this government multiplies and manufactures them. PDP cannot stand before us and say things have gotten better under its direction. It has only gotten worse and it’s now time for change. PDP’s government may say that it needs more time – that what we need now is continuity – but we do not. What we need now is change! I know what it takes to achieve real change – I have led our nation before – in times almost as unhappy as these. I know that to solve our problems we need real leadership, not warm words and empty promises. A leader needs integrity and strength – and an unbending commitment to do what is right. I know that leaders must not just mouth words about change – they must embody it in their lives and their values. My love for Nigeria is writ large across my heart and I have spent a lifetime in the service of its people. Through a long career trying to build a better country for my fellow Nigerians in offices both high and low I have always tried to place my country before myself. While some who have occupied those same positions have grown mysteriously rich, I still live on my army pension. I own no foreign bank accounts, I own no companies profiting from government contracts. Why then do I seek office, if not for myself? While others might prefer to stay at home watching their grandchildren grow and leave the battle to others, I still see injustices that need to be righted and I still dream of a New Nigeria. I am what you see before you – a simple man who believes in serving both God and his country. A man who is impatient for change, who loves Nigeria and seeks to serve it once again. When I last led this nation I launched a War against Indiscipline – today, I pledge a Battle for Hope. A battle against the dark forces of corruption and despair that have held our nation hostage to their greed for too long. We simply cannot afford four more years of PDP’s corruption and the corrosive cynicism that it has bred. The time for hope, the time for belief, is now. You cannot trust the corrupt to end corruption. You cannot trust the selfish and self-interested to rule in the best interests of the people. You cannot trust those who believe hope is a tool of government rather than a human right to plant the seed of belief. Let’s be clear. This is not a time for continuity. Failure does not deserve continuity. Incompetence does not deserve continuity. It deserves change; that is what the nation deserves and that is what we will bring. Make no mistake – as is always the case for those who seek to bring change, it will not come easy. And today I ask for your votes and support as I make these five pledges to the nation: I will honestly govern Nigeria in accord with the constitution and rule of law. I will bring all resources necessary to end poverty through ending corruption, promoting broadly-shared economic growth, investing in our country and creating jobs. I will tolerate no religious, regional, ethnic or gender bias. I will return Nigeria to a position of international respect through active and wise foreign policy. I will select the best Nigerians for posts in my government. I do not intend to rule Nigeria. I want to democratically govern it with your help. I seek a Nigeria where Christians and Muslims may practice their faiths in peace and security; a Nigeria that is just and where corruption no longer trespasses into our institutions and national behavior and a Nigeria where our diversity could be used for our national prosperity. Nigeria is our home. Let us now turn it into the great nation we know it can and should be. I thank you all. http://pulse.ng/politics/apcdecides-buhari-gives-emotional-speech-at-presidential-primaries-id3340586.html |

I think some people here need to do a little research on those places on the list. Many of you saying Nigeria is better off will work themselves out to make more money and visit places like Maldives, Seychelles and Barbados. If you don't know about these places, google them and check images. I'm sure you will be 'wowed' . ![]() |

Close family members according to TheWill have reported that former Petroleum Minister and Secretary General of OPEC, Dr. Rilwanu Lukman is dead. He was 76 years old. Rilwanu Lukman is a Nigerian engineer who held several ministerial positions in the Nigerian Federal government before becoming Secretary General of OPEC (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries) from 1 January 1995 to 31 December 2000. On 18 December 2008, Lukman was appointed Minister of Petroleum Resources by Nigerian president Umaru Yar’Adua, holding office until March 2010. Lukman was appointed Minister of Mines, Power and Steel from 1984 to 1985 in the government of General Muhammadu Buhari. In 1986 he was appointed Federal Minister of Petroleum Resources, holding that position until February 1990. In that role, he was also Chairman of the Board of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation. He was briefly Minister of Foreign Affairs between January and September 1990. He was Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Electric Power Authority (1993–1994). From 1986 he served eight consecutive terms as OPEC president. Lukman was elected OPEC secretary general on 22 November 1994, succeeding Dr. Subroto of Indonesia, whose three-year term ended on 30 June 1994. Lukman was a compromise choice between two competing candidates, Hossein Kazempour Ardebili of Iran and Alirio Parra of Venezuela. He was re-elected to a second term in 1997, holding office until the end of 2000. He was a central figure in the agreement between Iran and Saudi Arabia to control oil prices early in 1999, followed by agreements to reduce production levels, which led to a surge in prices towards the end of the 1990s. President Barack Obama, British Prime Minister David Cameron and Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt were spotted snapping a “selfie” together at Tuesday’s memorial service for former South African President Nelson Mandela in Johannesburg. They were obviously excited like teenagers while taking the shots beside US First Lady Michelle who was visibly pissed off.Michelle Obama, who was sitting next to her husband, did not take part in the self. Most women don’t like it when their husband is playing and laughing with another woman in their presence and it seems that’s what happened between Obama and Michelle here. At a point,Michelle changed her seat and sat in between her husband and the lady, so she won’t disturb him again. ![]() Source: http://www.nigerianmonitor.com/2013/12/11/photos-obama-pisses-off-his-wife-by-taking-selfie-with-david-cameron-and-danish-pm-during-mandelas-memorial/

Anyone who wins Germany’s Alexander Humboldt Prize, may be on the line to win a Nobel Prize in his field. Most winners of the prestigious prize went on to win the Nobel Prize. Nigeria’s Andrew Nok of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria received the Humboldt prize early this year for his work in finding a cure for Trypanosomiasis. Home grown He had his entire education in Nigeria. But his work aims at raising the quality of life of both man and animal on the continent. This soft spoken dark complexioned Nigerian of average height is now a giant on the world stage. His work is global and path breaking in the context of finding a vaccine for Trypanosomiasis. He is humble and his friendly office bears marks of this quality. His table is a small one, so you sit a bit close to him. There is no distance between both of you . It’s a beautiful psychological thing. Knowledge can produce simple, uncomplicated human beings. It does so in this case. The name Nok is not just evocative of Nok terracottas, he bears the name of the famous community he hails from in Kaduna state, and Nok is also closely linked with tackling the scourge of Trypanosomiasis across the world. Is the letter ‘T’ significant to the people of Nok? They have produced Terracottas, and now their son is poised to arrest the scourge of Trypanosomiasis. Note the alphabet T occurs again. He is known in all the major scientific circles across the world which investigate the scourge of Trypanosomiasis as well as Malaria, and the snake venom. This shows that a rounded education in Nigeria can prepare one to perform well on a global, in this case, scientific platform. But he states that the special effort of the individual can make a big difference. This is a lesson for Nigeria of the present. Born in 1962 he is married with three children. Professor Andrew Jonathan Nok obtained his first, second and third degrees from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. Now, he is the Director, Centre for Biotechnology Research and Training, as well as Dean Faculty of Science, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. Nok’s world His is a world filled with Trypanosomes, parasites of various sorts, vectors, vaccines ,reagents and venoms. In his laboratory he navigates these realms with ease as he searches for a DNA vaccine for Trypanosomiasis. On his field of study, he says “My field of study is typically parasite enzymology, and the work has to do with identifying the crucial areas in parasites which can be exploited for drug design in the treatment of diseases. In the recent past our attention has focused on tropical diseases, typically referred to as neglected tropical diseases, otherwise known as Trypanosomiasis. We have also done quite a lot of work in snake venom biochemistry. The totality of our work is focused on how to look for antidotes to treat all these illnesses.” He is a recipient of the 2013 George Forster prize which is administered by the prestigious Alexander Humboldt Foundation in Germany. His words “The award I received in February this year is the George Forster prize, being administered by the Alex Humboldt foundation in Germany. It is important to say that the Humboldt foundation is one of the agencies in Germany that prides itself in scouting for excellence all over the world, for people to come to Germany to do research. I have been a Humboldt fellow as far back as 1995/1997. But the George Forster prize is a special one, which the board administers, and the prize is given strictly for excellence, and the selection is quite a rigorous exercise.” First African winner He is the first black African to win the George Forster prize “My being awarded this prize means that I am now very much visible for bigger prizes, like the Nobel prize. Thats one very key and tremendous breakthrough in this. Most of the Humboldt prize winners in recent past, have also emerged as Nobel Prize winners, and one interesting thing is that quite a number of them actually came for our investiture when we were given the prize.” The Humboldt Foundation strives for excellence. The whole world is its catchment area, and all the George Forster prizes could be given to a single country. Or they could spread it as much as the rigours of the exercise demand. It takes close to six months to get a full evaluation, says Professor Nok. Again he comments on the prize “One key thing is to recognise the uniqueness of the work that I have been doing on Trypanosomiasis, and the effort to get a DNA vaccine in the treatment of this disease, as well as other tropical diseases, like Malaria. This has attracted sa a lot of attention, not just locally here, but also in the whole world." He adds that Trypanosomiasis is a disease which affects great numbers of poor people on the African continent, and it is one which affects not just the human being, but also domestic animals and animals in the wild. He says that a large number of cattle on the continent perish annually on account of the disease, and that at present there is no cure for the disease. So, if a vaccine is found for the treatment of Trypanosomiasis, it will turn around the economy of many households, for they will be blessed with more productive and stable livestock, and will have resources for other projects. Some 75 million cattle are exposed to Trypanosomiasis annually on the continent.” This has impact on the economy of the country, as well as the economy of those who manage the cattle, he stresses. There is a huge migration from Nigeria’s Tsetse belt. According to him “When you go to the Tsetse fly belt, you find that most people who live within that area typically run away from the belt entirely, and some go to distant places. You can now understand why you have migration of cattle rearers from one end to the other. In most cases, apart from social or economic reasons, it has to do with safe places, where their cows can graze. In terms of Trypanosomiasis, we do not have so much of it in the country, but certainly in parts of Benue state, we still have human Trypanosomiasis, and, of course, the Delta and Edo area. We have serious concerns in respect of Trypanosomiasis in Cameroon and also in Central Africa.” Genetic engineering He says that Nigeria has progressed handsomely in terms of genetic engineering, drawing attention to Nigeria’s National Biotechnology Development Agency “At the moment we have that the national board that oversees practices of genetic engineering in the country, known as the National Biotechnology Development Agency. This agency is the repository of all the genetic materials that you are able to make. Whether it is from plants, whether it is from animals, or whether it has to do with drug development. So, I won’t say that we have gone very far, because even for now the law that regulates the practice of the usage of genes is not yet approved by the National Assembly. So most of the things we do, we have to do in collaboration with the National Biotechnology Agency, because our laboratiories have to be passed by an international body. The key reason is because of safety concerns, once you begin to use genetic elements. I won’t say that we have progressed significantly, but we are still growing.” Challenges Now, he speaks on challenges he has faced while seeking a vaccine for Trypanosomiasis. The major challenge has been that of funding,he says “Much of the funding is usually from external agencies, and collaborations we have with researchers in Germany, Japan, the United States and in England.” He adds that there has been a constant power problem. “We have tried to improve quite a number of things, especially in some of the work that we do locally. One typical area has to do with power. If you have to run a PCR, that is when you want to make several copies of a gene, its supposed to run for one hour, and if after 50 minutes the light goes off,you have lost everything, which means you have not done anything. If you see the laboratory where we operate, you will see quite a number of inverters which we operate to keep our refrigerators permanently on. “The next difficulty is the fact that most of the reagents used in the laboratories have to be sought from Europe or the USA.” These are not things that you can get in Lagos or Abuja, he says. “They are rare reagents, and they have to be flown in under special conditions. Quite often than not, we have problems at the customs. They would actually want to see what you have with you .But some of these things are not supposed to be opened.and we have been able to develop some rapport with officials at Kaduna and Abuja, and we have been able to bring in our materials in good time.” Great strides There have been a number of successes along the path of this unique work. He notes that this has occurred in the area of capacity building “Our major focus has been to raise a critical mass of scientists in the area. There will then be quite a number of people involved in the work, just as it happens elsewhere. I am proud to say that we have people who have worked on this project, who are currently professors, and have published very well in elitist journals, and we have been able to access grants. One very impressive thing is that we are recognised worldwide, and this has been able to put the University on the global academic map.” He speaks glowingly of a colleague “I supervised him when he was doing his Masters, as well as the PhD, and he was able to get some of the top most world class Fellowships. Many scholars abroad are now eager to travel to the Ahmadu Bello University to work with Professor Nok and his team.” He says “On account of our publications, we have been able to get people who are anxious to work with us. We have people who, right now as we speak want us to work towards getting the Wellcome Trust Grant. In all the partnerships we have been engaged in, we have never worked as junior partners. That alone is exciting, to get people who want to come here. Right now, we have some Germans who want to get Humboldt Fellowships to come to ABU as Humboldt Fellows. That is the zenith of any educational institution in Europe. Now, we have people who want to come to the Ahmadu Bello University as post doctorate Humboldt Fellows coming from Europe. That tells you the direction you are moving.” Transgenic insects On facilities needed to do tests for DNA in the country,he states “The question whether these tests can be done here, the answer is yes. I want to say that we don’t have these facilities here yet. The facilities have not been so tailored for that purpose. Nigeria is too rich to say it cannot have the items required to set up a laboratory for DNA testing. I don’t think to set up a laboratory to run such a test should even cost up to half a billion Naira. The police incidentally have a forensic laboratory. I don’t know if they do digital face analysis. But in respect of gene analysis, I don’t think they have that capacity for now, and that’s what I think they are trying to pursue. I think it’s a wonderful initiative, if the police finally have a DNA laboratory.” He also speaks of a growing concern now which is to produce a ‘transgenic insect. That is a genetically modified Tsetse fly, that can bite you,and when it does, it will take the Trypanosome out of you, thereby shutting off the life cycle of the Trypanosome which then dies off. So the genetically modified Tsetse flies would then be controlling the disease.” He notes however that on the converse “If you wipe away all the Tsetse flies, some very serious epidemic will arise. Thats very true. If we eliminate all the Anopheles mosquitoes, some other disease will emerge, and you will be shocked.” Every creature that has been created has its place and function in Creation, he seems to be saying here. His is an exciting world of research into the Tsetse fly, and a constant navigation among parasites in the search for the cure for Trypanosomiasis.

Dereformer: This is a blind post.If you have not studied Islam, please don't talk about Islam. |
Nice article by Eseoghene Al-Faruq Ohwojeheri. Let me begin by answering a very silly question. The same lame question people ask and when you answer them they ask again and again like some badly programmed robot. “can you give your daughter out in marriage at 14?” The simple answer is yes. But watch out, after reading this piece they will ask again. They ask and keep asking because the campaign against a woman less than 18 getting married has just two pillars: angry exclamations and pointless questions. We will not be like them, we will mention and refute each and every one of their objection to a man of any age marrying a woman of any age provided there is parental consent Some have likened marrying a 14 years old girl to “ruining her life” and this is related to sex often. This is the view point of people who are sexually reckless hence their mind have become perverted so much so that they can only think of a man and a young lady living as man and wife from the angle of sex. When he was informed that marriage does not mean immediate sex one of such commentators said “how can you give a bone to a dog and expect him not to eat it?”. So you see this pervert likens his being around a 14 years old girl to a dog being around a bone and surprisingly he thinks someone else is the pervert Pedophilia is not to have sex with your wife who is under 18 within marriage, pedophilia is to have sexual desire for prepubescent children. If i marry a paralyzed woman does it follow that i have sexual desire for paralyzed women? If i marry an old lady does it follow that i have sexual desire for old women? Why is it said that whoever marries someone you defined a child has sexual desire for children? This thinking can only come from people who not only think marriage is equal to sex but also see women as of no other value than sex and one can hardly blame them afteral the movies they watch, songs they sing, women they see and even clothes they wear resolve around sex and they think everyone is like them Some like Femi Fani Kayode have even describe the whole nation as a nation of perverts and we say to this elder with the temperament of a juvenile; by your own definition of perversion and pedophilia, you are calling your great grand fathers perverts and by implication you are calling yourself a product of pedophilia. You are not stopping there you are also calling Joseph who was betrothed to Mary the mother of Jesus far before 12 years a pedophile and you are pointing accusing fingers at your God for putting one of His honorable messengers, Jesus, in the tummy of a 12 years old according to your records and we say to you; an elder should only speak of what he has thought of, please leave this reactionary outburst to children; the poorly brought up ones to be specific The problem i have with overnight moralist is their hypocrisy. If the news was that the Senate removed a clause that says fornication is a crime these Child Not Bride people will not breathe a word. If the news was that Senate removed a clause that girls of 14 years can no longer be used as house helps these Child not Bride hypocrites will not breathe a word. They tell us that a girl of 14 cannot handle a home yet alot of them have one at home washing their clothes, cleaning the toilet and sweeping their floors without respect and honour that a man should give his wife. They tell us a girl of 14 does not know anything yet Juliet of the Romeo and Juliet fame which they propagate as epitome of love was not even up to 14 neither was the Rose character who is depicted to have sex with Jack. So to these crazed morons it is ok for a child to be depicted with romance and sex but she should not marry; they choose child pornography over marriage and one of their messages asked yet another chilly question: “how can a child who is not allowed to watch pornography be allowed to get married?”. What a question, what a people! Where were these fraudsters when movies were being aired teaching their children how to kiss and have sex? Where were these criminals when Mrs. Ngozi Iwuoha cried her eyes out narrating how Apostle Princewill Basil lied to her 15 years old daughter that there was a “dirty foundation that defined her life” and that he has the anointing power to cast the evil spirit away from her so he violated the little girl and when she was pregnant he took her somewhere and aborted the baby. What about the chairman of bishops in Rivers State, Bishop Chibuike Nwabueze who admitted to have had sex with a 14 years old girl and paid for her abortion? Why was there no Child Not intimacy gadget campaign and no VVF talk? The Bishop even claimed the little girl seduced him and i am sure this same Bishop if he was not nabbed would have been among the loud mouths speaking against a decision not to prohibit marriage for a 17 years old whose parent and religion consent In the last few weeks there was no fewer than 5 little children defiled in Benin City from police report alone and you can be sure the police will not report 95% of the cases. Vanguard Newspaper has tagged it a Season of Rape. Pastor Eze Fidelis of the Deeper Life Bible Church was discovered to be having sex with two girls one 9 and the other 11 and the two of the use to come together to his house for that purpose for over a year now meaning he started when one was 8 and the other 10, Segun Oteru did what he did with Grace a 12 years old, and Saturday Cole did same with another little girl of 11 all in one week and nobody breathe a word, and it was not done by force, and what we hear is “i was tempted” from the same mouth that would have been cursing Yerima for marrying a girl who is now 17 years old schooling happily in Egypt while he is in Nigeria. Some say Yerima paid 500,000 dollars for dowry and at the same time they said his wife will have VVF, this is like fasting and eating at the same time but the country has enough fools who will buy any and every talk Putting all these occurrences into perspective, we are not saying if you did not speak up against prostitution then you must be mute on fornication, that is wrong because both are evil. What we are saying is if you will not criticize an evil do not criticize a good just because you suspect it may lead to evil in some cases. Will there be men who will maltreat their wife when she is 90? YES, will there be men who will maltreat their wife when they are 14? YES, will there be men who will maltreat their wife when they are 25? YES…there is nothing in the age 17 that induces maltreatment. Fathers need to be careful who they allow their daughters of any age to marry, they may even be more careful when the daughter is younger, no problem, but don’t tell us the whole idea is wrong and should be prohibited for everybody because, i don’t know of your Christian community, but our Muslim community have men who will not maltreat their wives of any age even though we have a few who would. I don’t know of your Christian community but our Muslim community have men who marry for other reasons apart from sex and we urge you to respect that afteral we are not coming for your daughter, even if we do you can reject, and our daughters who we marry out at 14 are not complaining now that they are 35, matter of fact they are happy they will have children of 20 who may even be Professors by the time they are 45 still young and beautiful thirty years into marriage You have always ask if we can give out our daughters at that age and we have always answered that we can because we know the stuff a true Muslim is made of; even if his wife was blind, deaf and dumb he won’t maltreat her because his beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW) has already said the best among you is the one who is best to his wife. If you judge us looking at El Rufai and Atiku Abubakar who you have corrupted with your system you may not see clearly. I suggest you bother yourself with your problem so that we see a Boy Not Bride campaign that will safe the little boys being sodomized everyday in the name of a strange thou shall not marry religious belief afterall they say charity begins at home Finally, let me say that you can make any law you want to make none will be before our Qur’an and the Sunnah of our Prophet because we consider it foolishness to place what man legislates on top what God Almighty reveals, so if you intend to seize the House of Assembly and write a new constitution that says marriage should be put at 45 please knock yourself out, the law will be for you and you alone; we marry at any age and to partners of any age and nothing will stop it, you can waste time and money it won’t change because this is how we have kept our decency which, even though you hate to admit, you are witnesses to. We do hope you come out of your hypocrisy some day and accept life as real as it is , maybe then you’ll realise when God and God’s people speak the opinion of fools don’t matter.
