Politics / Agbaje Can’t Govern Lagos, Says Fashola by Murphylink(m): 6:02pm On Dec 31, 2014
Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola says Lagos State is too big to be handed over to the Peoples Democratic Party’s, PDP, governorship candidate, Jimi Agbaje to experiment with as he lacks experience.

Fashola, who spoke on Tuesday at a Town Hall Meeting with artisans and tradesmen, said the All Progressive Congress, APC, candidate, Akinwunmi Ambode, should be trusted to govern and lead Lagos State in the right direction as he has the needed experience to do so, having beein in government for 27 years.

Though the governor did not mention Agbaje’s name, he was referring to him when he advised Lagosians not to trade experience in government business for experiment and trial and error that the opposition (PDP) wanted to bank on.

According to him, Ambode is better suited for the state’s number one job because of his competence saying he worked with him for over six years as Accountant General of the State and would start from where he handed over the baton to him.

He said he could thump his chest and vouch for the governorship candidate of the APC in Lagos State as one who would be a worthy successor to him.

Backing his contention with several anecdotes, the governor urged residents of Lagos not to make the mistake of electing someone without cognate experience who would only end up wobbling and fumbling with the fortunes of Lagos.

Fashola stated that he was ready to defend his stewardship in office at any time and at any forum if called upon to do so because his government had been very impactful to the lives of the average residents of the state.

He thanked the artisans, tradesmen and farmers for their honesty and truthfulness about the positive change that has come into their lives through the activities of the State Government in the informal sector.

The governor said he wholeheartedly supports their request for a continuation of the prosperity that is being enjoyed in the informal and agricultural sector under the present administration, adding that the only way such continuity could be actualized is by voting to ensure that the All Progressives Congress (APC) emerges victorious at all levels in Lagos State and the federal elevel in 2015.

He stressed that this is the time and period for Nigerians to make very important decisions about their lives as the elections approach and that the people should be bold to take up their leaders on what they have done with the time they have spent in office before asking for renewal of tenures.

The governor added that when President Goodluck Jonathan was seeking the votes of Nigerians before his first term in office, one of his sloganeering catch phrases was that as a child he had no shoes and walked barefooted but that now the campaigns would be about issues as the era of having no shoes to curry sympathy was gone.

Fashola said the President also made several promises such as the one he made in Lagos during the campaigns in 2011, where he promised to reconstruct the road leading to the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, adding that four years after, nothing had happened in Lagos.

Speaking at the event, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, running mate to Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, the APC presidential candidate, called on Nigerians not to vote for President Goodluck Jonathan, as doing so will only attract hunger.

He said Nigeria under Jonathan had already entrenched deep poverty and that retaining him for a second term would mean more hunger, and that the time had come for power to change hand at the centre.

Also speaking, the APC Lagos governorship candidate, Akinwunmi Ambode said APC from the period of Bola Tinubu to Governor Babatunde Fashola has continuously provided good governance to the people of the state, saying if voted into power, his government would not deviate from the principle.

He appealed to Lagos residents to vote massively for him during the governorship election and for General Buhari at the presidential election next year.

“Our promise to you as a party is to provide good governance and able leadership. We want to take good care of your businesses. If you have been making N1000 profit before, what we want for you is, after providing all the facilities you need for your business, that your profit swells to N10, 000.

“We know that when you make more profit, you will have more to take care of yourself, your children and your home. We promise not to stress you with our policies. I also want to remind you that no matter what we do, if we do not take over the central government, we may be hindered in a way and may not be able to provide all that we want to provide for you,” he said.

According to Ambode, “there must be change of government at the Federal level. APC must take over in Abuja. In Lagos, we remember where the former Governor Bola Tinubu started from and how Governor Fashola consolidated on his achievements and raised the bar, that is what we want to continue in Lagos.”

Politics / Slavery And Nigerians by Murphylink(m): 7:55pm On Dec 21, 2014
Going through the "port of no return" at Badagry with all the relics of slavery, one can visibly see the past & collateral damage of slavery on Africa & self identity.

My question is if hands of time are reversed on slavery;

What will be the position of Africa & Nigeria in particular looking at the economy & coupled with the mad rush for "greener pastures" (self-imposed slavery) that turns to be odd or menial job. People often timesendure/ tolerate all forms of abuse all in the name of residence permit.

Would people not willing to accept "free"forced slavery if the Europeans were to return to Africa?

Politics / What Level Of Respect Does The Police Command From The People by Murphylink(m): 9:34pm On Jul 10, 2013
Critically looking at the Nigerian Police Force as an institution and/or profession, what's the level of respect they command ?
With series of reforms/transformation/reorientation/reorganization etc they will always remain what they've always been. Because institution(s)or profession(s) are product of the society that produce them.
Last week, I had bitter-sweet experience with the Nigerian police officers while trying to get police report for a lost international passport.
I started the processing of retrieving the passport with an affidavit at Igbosere High court. While at the high court, there was no issue because its a do-it-yourself thing. From there I went to police station. On getting to the station, the officer at the admin desk said "to get this report, na #2000". I politely ask him if he will issue receipt to cover the payment. The next thing said was " do you ask them question at the court where you got the affidavit"
While trying to calm him, he told me to leave " his office" ( public office that anybody can occupy). Outside "his office" I called Lagos police headquarters & they told me one of the ogas at the station will call me to & attend to my complain. Before I can say jack, somebody called, asking me to come to the station.
On getting to the station, the senior officer invited into his office and ask me all that happened. It was him that now directed the officer that refuse me before to issue the report without paying a dime.
Looking at this kind of ugly experience i had with the police.
My questions are;
-Can ordinary citizen have respect for the police ? -How can this type of institution command respect from the people they ought to serve
-Can people voluntarily give information to the Nigerian police?
-Can there be effective and efficient policing when there's lack of trust between officers and the citizen.

You can share your encounter with this institution

Nairaland / General / This Bionic Eye Could Let The Blind See — Even If They Don’t Have Eyeballs by Murphylink(m): 3:02pm On Jun 22, 2013
This bionic eye could let the blind see — even if they don’t have eyeballs

JUNE 9, 2013 10:39 AM •

This might be obvious by this point, but our world is looking more like the Star Trek universe every day.

Researchers at Australia’s Monash University are working on a brain implant that could restore vision to those with conditions like glaucoma and macular degeneration.

The device, expected to begin trials next year, works via a combination of a wireless camera and a brain implant that stimulates the visual cortex, allowing users to see basic shapes.

As project director Arthur Lowery told The Guardian, the system is all about allowing the visually impaired to more easily navigate their environments.

“It means people can go into a meeting and know who is there and how many of them there are. People can venture outside because they can see trees,” he said.

Bionic eyes, more formally known as “visual prostheses,” have been in development for over 20 years. While lots of people are researching the concept, the Monash bionic eye is interesting because it completely bypasses the optic system. Translation: You don’t even need eyeballs to use it.

But the Monash University researchers are not alone. Back in February, California-based Second Sight got FDA approval for its aptly named Argus II system, which promises to restore vision to those afflicted with advanced retinitis pigmentosa, a disease that slowly kills the eye’s photoreceptor

It is very irritating to see people on Nairaland with first to comment attitudes & other crappy things when burning issues of national importance are being discuss.
However, I personally think it's because we don't have shared values in Nigeria. What we need is Good enforcement of all our traffic rules. Restricting the movement of petroleum trucks to night may do more harms than Good.
There movement can easily be monitored at the day time than night by law enforce officers.

Politics / Death Toll In Jos Village Massacre Reach 90 by Murphylink(m): 11:16pm On Jul 08, 2012
Death Toll in Nigeria Village Massacre Hits 90

At least 90 people had been killed during attacks on villages in Gashik District of Barkinladi Local government area of central north Nigeria's Plateau State by Sunday afternoon, security sources and Xinhua reporters on ground said.

In a brief text message to Xinhua, the security sources said 50 burnt bodies were uncovered in the early hours of Sunday in a COCIN church in Matsai village.

Xinhua's reporters in the restive city of Jos said 20 persons were killed Sunday afternoon at the mass burial site of victims on Saturday attack, including a serving Senator, Gyang Dantong, representing Plateau north and the majority leader of the State House of Assembly, Gyang Fulani.

Before he was killed on Sunday, the late Fulani told Xinhua on Saturday that at least 20 people were killed on Friday night in Barkinladi by yet to be identified gunmen, who invaded nine villages of the locality.

"Dantong, Fulani and other unidentified officials were all murdered today during a mass burial for scores of people killed by unknown gunmen," the security source said.

Dan Manjan, a legislative aide to the senator, who escaped the attack said scores of injured victims are still receiving treatment in hospitals across the state.

A Xinhua reporter said the Berom people leaving in Jos have taken over major roads in the state.

Plateau State is situated in Nigeria's middle belt where the Muslim-dominated north and the Christian-majority south meet. It has seen years of ethnic tensions and is a major potential flashpoint ahead of the April presidential elections.

The state capital Jos was plunged in a pool of blood on March 7, 2010, when members of local Muslim and Christian communities fought each other in revenge for previous killings.

The state has recently witnessed some bomb blasts and constant rifts between Berom and Fulani herdsmen, with many, especially women and children, murdered in cold blood in the state.
