Another Nigerian has been honoured in the academic field for her immense achievement. Zahrah Ibrahim, a PhD student at the School of Engineering, became the winner of the inaugural European Drilling Engineering Association (DEA(e) Innovation award.

According to the information posted on the school’s facebook's page, the award also comes with a whopping €5,000 cash prize with paid travel and accommodation.

The Federal Government has released the timetable of events leading to the celebration of the country's 59th Independence anniversary.

In a press release signed by Willie Bassey, Director (Information) at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the anniversary will celebration will commence on Monday, September 23, with a press conference at the National Press Centre, Abuja.

A Nigerian man identified as Nonso George Okafor has been arrested by India’s Cyber Crime Cell for allegedly duping several women of money by pretending to be a wealthy foreigner. According to a police statement, Okafor used to talk to women for weeks, promising gifts, marriage, and a comfortable life and later dupe them.

“The accused sent gifts to unsuspecting victims and then the women would get a call from a person pretending to be a customs official saying the gift has been held for customs violations and that she has to pay a clearance charge or fine to receive it,” the statement said.

Once the victim transferred the money, the accused disappeared, it said. The accused used profile pictures and information of doctors, engineers and fashion designers living abroad to create new identities to con his victims. “Okafor usually targeted single women around the age of 30, divorcees or disabled persons,” it added.

A little boy, identified as Emediong Victor Urau, is nursing numerous wounds on his head and body after his dad attacked him with a machete at Mbiaobong ikot Antem off Oron road, opposite the house of the village head, Solomon Essien, in Akwa Ibom state. The incident happened yesterday and according to a neighbor, Victor’s only offense was going out to play with other kids. It was gathered that the boy isn’t new to unwarranted brutality from his dad and stepmother.

The neighbor said Victor is often beaten and locked up in a dog’s kennel, but yesterday’s assault was so severe that he had to run away from home.

Uzoma Asagwara, a Nigerian-Canadian, has been elected into the country’s legislature seat for the New Democratic Party. Her election was a historical mark in the country as she was the first qu*er black person to be elected in Manitoba.

CBC News also reported that she was one of three black people in the 150-year history of the Manitoba legislative house. She said that making the elected officials reflect the people is the only to make sure the people’s voices are heard and served in the province.

Reacting to the result, the first black Winnipeg councilor said he was glad that immigrants and refugees will now see themselves in the new representatives.

Uzoma said she is grateful for everyone who has supported them long before the election. The Nigerian-Canadian is not only a politician and activist, she is also an athlete.
