The Senator representing Yobe North constituency, Ahmed Lawan, has won the leadership position of the ninth National Assembly.

Senator Lawan defeated his opponent Ali-Ndume with 79 votes from the lawmakers, thereby making him the Senate President.

107 senators cast their votes.

Yakubu Danladi, a 34-year-old graduate of Kaduna Polytechnic, has been elected speaker of the Kwara state house of assembly.

Danladi, who represents Ilesha-Gwanara constituency, was elected unopposed on Tuesday.

He was nominated by Saheed Popoola of Balogun-Ojomu constituency, Offa local government area of the state.

The development comes one day after Abok Ayuba, a 33-year-old final year student of the University of Jos, emerged speaker of the Plateau state house of assembly, and Debo Ogundoyin, a 32-year-old lawmaker from Ibarapa east constituency, was elected speaker of the Oyo state house of assembly.

Their emergence followed the passage of the “Not Too Young To Run” bill which reduced the age limit for members of state house of assembly from 30 years to 25 years.

The Deputy Senate President in the just concluded 8th Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, has returned his official vehicles.

Ekweremadu was the only immediate past presiding officer that was yet to return his official vehicles. However, a source close to the former Deputy Senate President said the vehicles were returned last night after being serviced and washed.

The irrepressible senator representing Kogi West senatorial district, Dino Melaye disclosed that he was in Police detention for 124 out of the 365 days in the year 2018.

Revealing his ordeasl and political persecutions to his colleagues during Thursday’s valedictory session of the 8th Senate, the eloquent lawmaker who sang a hymnal song to the admiration of others, said he only campaigned for just four days for his re-election bid in the February 23,2019 election.

Melaye added that ” I was in police custody when the recall process failed woefully. I am here to thank God because in 2017, I was arrested eight times. In 2018, I was arrested 18 times and out of 365 days in 2018, I spent 124 in police custody. I campaigned only four days to the 2019 election.”

He praised the leadership qualities of outgoing Senate President Bukola Saraki while condemning the shameful involvement of one of his colleagues, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege in the notorious mace stolen saga.
