This is worth a share.
Someone asked me a question this morning about login into a mikrotik router on a raspberry Pi that didn't have a browser.
Took me a while to figure out his question as I thought he merely wanted to connect into the WiFi network,. He actually needed to login into the network after using IwConfig to join.
So I remembered the small utility called w3m.
Yeah u can browse in a terminal. It does http 1.0
Funny how I never used to remember this. U Really need to save data and just want to read text, why not...
It's why we use Linux. It's why we chose freedom
Run sudo apt-get install w3m w3m-img
To open a webpage just run 'w3m url'
E. G w3m Nairaland.Com
Cheers
I'm sure newbies are also aware you can download in terminal without any app?
Wget DownloadLink
It supports resumable links too. Most download apps in Linux are actually just front end to Wget

"Links" does that as well, and it has partial HTML 4.0 support.

Hey guys!. Been a while.
I just came across the old Ubuntu Nigeria wordpress blog, and it brought back some fond memories of the good old days.
It probably doesn't have any information that's still relevant, but It definitely has nostalgia value. You can check it out https://ubuntunigeria./

thanks for the link.
weird tho, the only part of that course that is new for me (not exactly new, but i never really learnt) is the advanced bash scripting part.

Yeah. It's been quite a while. Glad to see you're still keeping the flag flying. I'll try to pop in more frequently now.

Hi guys!
Its been a while since i've been on here, so I thought I should pop in and say hi!.
Some old cats like 4llerbuntu might remember me (or not grin).

Anyway, wanna bring to your attention this cool introduction to Linux course that has just started. Its free and sponsored by the Linux Foundation, so you know its legit. If you wanna learn more about Linux as a platform, or just want a certificate to validate your skills to your employer (or future employer), this is a neat way to do it.

Name verified certificates are not free though, but there is a free certificate option.

You can check it out here: https://www.edx.org/course/linuxfoundationx/linuxfoundationx-lfs101x-introduction-1621

My laptop has 8gb of RAM and a Core i7 processor. I have very limited use of windows these days, and so having windows 7 in a virtualbox instance is perfect for my use case, and as an added bonus, I don't have to choose a boot device every time I boot, or worry about UEFI issues whenever I reinstall or upgrade. But for most people, I agree with @roosebolton that Virtualization is not ideal.

lolz...sowie bro if my sentence is offensive. I just asked so I can start using it there before I decide to install directly on my PC. BTW, I'm having challenge installing it. It finished installation but I was expecting to see a graphical interface as depicted on the site but all I see is the terminal console. So please, what's next?

Yeah, you should see a graphical interface. There are a number of things that could cause you not to see a graphical interface after installation. Too many to troubleshoot effectively. What I would advice you to do is ensure you are running the latest version virtual box (check on virtualbox.org) and also the latest version of Ubuntu (which is Ubuntu 13.04) and then repeat the installation. If you used VMWare for the first installation, try virtualbox this time around.

I don't even know if you're trying to joke or just unintentionally mixed things up. Anyway, to answer your question, yes, Ubuntu will install in VMware or Virtualbox.

ciphoenix: ^^^

You got it to work? shocked do you have a post on how you did it?

Unfortunately, I didn't document everything I did. It was a little easier for me I think because my laptop is Lenovo and they are reputed as one of the more linux compatible OEMs. Basically, what I did is to first enter UEFI from windows 8, then I disabled "secure boot". I later realised that the laptop has a physical button beside the battery jack that boots right into the UEFI, which is pretty handy. I then used the default partition manager on windows to shrink the hard disk (I could only shrink like 150gb or so out of 1TB HDD). I rebooted and used the Ubuntu 12.10 x64 DVD to boot and run the installation on the shrunk space. After installing and rebooting, The system didn't recognise the Ubuntu install. I searched online and found an Ubuntu tool called boot-repair. I then booted d dvd again, installed boot-repair on d live CD and ran it. I think that's what fixed it.
I'm properly missing out a few details 'cos I remember it being much more difficult n stressful than I just enumerated, so don't take this as an instruction.

Maleeq: Guys, as i am typing this message, i am seriously sweating. Come to my rescue before something do me o!

Wetin happen? Oya, listen:

I wanted to create an Ubuntu Startup disk on a 4GB USB flash drive. The *.iso file is contained on my USB HDD (1Tb partitioned as 3 ext4 primary partitions, 1 NTFS). I somehow accidentally selected my HDD as the "Disk to use" instead of the Flash drive. Now I have a single FAT32 partition on the HDD.

This HDD contains files (over 500Gb) and I really would like to get it back.

I have tried testdisk but no success yet...(I ran analyse on the disk all night, d thing no gree finish o cry )

Has anyone been in my position before? or what can you suggest I do?

I feel your pain man. I've totally messed up someone's drive in a similar manner before. I haven't had an issue with Ubuntu's disk creator though. It should be smart enough to detect a HDD from a Flash drive. Like someone suggested, maybe you should consider Unetbootin instead in the future. As for recovery, I would typically suggest "testdisk" and "photorec" 'cos I've had varying degrees of success with both in the past, but it seems you have tried that. I came across another such tool recently and it seems to have a lot of buzz about it. I haven't tried it before so I don't know if is appropriate for your issue, but you can check it out. Its called "SpinRite". Its not free though. You can find it here https://www.grc.com/sr/spinrite.htm

4llerbuntu: Hello gentlemen.

Something just occurred to me. I have not tried to setup a dualboot of win8 and ubuntu.

Probably never will for myself. Its not so much as an issue with windows but more of a total dislike for win8.

BUt there is a good chance I may be conscripted to do it for someone else.

Is there something I need to know beforehand esp with this secureboot etc shebang?

Or other quirks? If hate to be stuck
I got a new laptop in December of last year that came with Windows 8 preinstalled. After banging my head against a wall several times, I was able to dualboot Windows 8 and Ubuntu. I eventually messed that up though when I tried shrinking a partition and finally just removed the windows completely. I've been running Ubuntu only on this lappy ever since. I documented the ordeal on my blog here http://www.muyiscoi.com/?p=389

For computers that have been upgraded from Windows 7, there really isn't much difference in the dualbooting process. For computers with Windows 8 preinstalled though, there are a lot of issues. The biggest one is that the computers have a new BIOS called UEFI. UEFI itself is fully supported on linux but microsoft enabled a feature of UEFI called "secure boot" which ensures that no OS image not signed with Microsoft cryptographic keys would be bootable on a device with the feature enabled (Which is all devices with Windows 8 preinstalled). The first thing to do, to be on the safe side is to go into the UEFI and disable "secure boot" (Note that you cannot use the normal method of "esc" or "f2" to enter the UEFI because of "Fast-boot", another "feature" of Windows 8. Disable that too).
Your UEFI may support "BIOS emulation mode" which basically it behave like the older, pre BIOS. This is meant for installing older OSes that don't have support for UEFI. Problem is, if you use this mode, you won't see your UEFI based OSes on the boot list and have to switch modes anytime you want to boot a particular OS.
For more information on UEFI stuff, check out my post on "FosswatchNG" on the subject http://fosswatchng.com/2013/05/uefi-temporary-problem-or-threat-to-linux-desktop/

Only the latest versions of certain Distros can even be installable on Windows 8 systems. Ubuntu 12.10 x64 has some support (that's the one I installed initially), but I recommend 13.04 x64 (which I currently use) and above.
Another stumbling block you might encounter is the method of partitioning. Some Windows 8 systems are partitioned using GPT style partitions as opposed to the normal MBR style partition we are all used to. This causes lots of issues when partitioning.
I'm sure there are other things I'm not remembering right now but suffice it to say that its not as smooth as it once was. There is even a risk of bricking the laptop. There was a report of some Samsung laptops getting bricked when you try installing linux on it (you can google it).

My advise is that you do extensive googling before attempting it. Also, create recovery disks of the Windows 8 before starting.

I am considering YaClick as an ISP but I wonder if I can poll opinions from fellow nairalanders on how it performs in the real world.
If you're a user of YaClick, does it meet up with expectations? Would you recommend it to others?
I'm most interested in people using it in Port Harcourt or environs but anywhere within Nigeria is fine too. Thanks

firefox 11.2 is still supported on ubuntu and works flawlessly on firefox for me. No new Flash development on Linux except for the Pepper stuff from Chrome but that's okay 'cos Flash is on the way out anyway. The future belongs to HTML5

The download manager I have always used on all OSes is DownThemAll and it suits my needs just fine. Now, if you are a Chrome/Chromium user, that would be a problem since its a firefox addon.
I would have recommeneded uGet as an alternative but I see it too isn't working very well for you.

@4llerbuntu
lol. I try. I don't know his competency level so I thought i should be thorough.

As for the gaming stuff, i'm not so sure it will work that way. I know most newer laptops support hardware virtualisation but I dont know if that translates to the GPUs also. On Virtualbox, you can enable 3D graphics acceleration for the guest OS but the memory is restricted to a max of 128mb. That wouldnt really work well for high graphics games.

I don't know about accessing the external drive but what I do is, I share a particular folder on my home folder on ubuntu with the guest OS and put whatever I want the guest (windows 7) to access in there. Here is how I do it.

On Ubuntu, select the folder you want to use, for example, "public" and go to properties (from the context menu i.e right click)
On properties, go to the "Share" tab
Check the boxes "share this folder" and "allow others to create and delete files from this folder"
close.

On Virtualbox, select the VM (in my case, Windows 7)
Right click on it and go to Settings
Under settings, go to the "Shared Folders" tab
Click on the little blue icon labeled "add shared folder"
On the box that pops up, under Folder path, navigate to the location of the folder we just shared on ubuntu
Give it any folder name you like but note the name you give it (in my case, "Public"
Check the box for "automount" and click OK.

Boot the Windows 7 VM
After it has loaded, open cmd
type in
net use x: \\vboxsvr\public

replace "public" in the command above with whatever name you gave the share (the one i told you to note above)
press enter.
You can also replace "x" above with any other drive letter you like that is not already in use (typically from e to z) but no need for that so you should just leave it alone

Go to My computer and you should see the shared folder mounted as a network drive.
That's it.

NOTE: Although I haven't tried it, there is no reason why this method shouldnt work for an entire drive. On ubuntu, drives are mounted into a folder on "/media" so if you can share one of the drives there, you can just follow the method outlined above and it should work.
However, the making changes to the /media requires root access so you'll have to launch nautilus using the command prompt. you can do that by doing
"Alt+F2"
and then type in
"gksu nautilus"
. It would prompt you for your password and then launch a root instance of nautilus.

NOTE2: If this doesn't work, you might need to install virtualbox tools on the guest OS. To do that, on the window that the guest OS is running, go to the menu at the top, you will find "Install guest Additions" under "Devices". You might need to download it.

As for browsing, the guest OS should automatically inherit the internet connection of the host. If that's not the case, it probably means you have tinkered with the network settings of the guest OS and just need to set things back to default.

Pls ask if there's anything you didn't get and i'll try to clarify.

Just updated to a new kernel today n things seem to have corrected themselves. So, for now, I won't be reinstalling. 12.10 was still better for me though, especially as regards graphics performance. There seems to be some form of regression with the Intel graphics driver shipping with 13.04. I sometimes see some artefacts flashing on my screen. I purposedly got a laptop with Intel graphics so I wont have to worry about display driver issues, so I'm a little irked by this. Hopefully, an update will fix that soon too.
By d way, Ubuntu should never have upgraded totem. Totem has been on version 3.4 for ages and they finally upgraded to 3.6 with this version. IMO, totem is now crap, just like Nautilus is also now mostly crap! (minus the new search feature which is kinda cool). In fact, most of the remixing the GNOME guys are doing to their core apps is just making them worse off. I don't know what is going on in their heads. Ubuntu needs to seriously consider forking off atleast some of the core apps and not being at the mercy of GNOME all the time. I just downloaded Parole Media Player today, which is the Totem alternative for the XFCE desktop. It works perfectly on Ubuntu and has replaced Totem for me. Blogged about it here http://www.muyiscoi.com/?p=510

Upgraded from 12.10 and I'm having some random issues. My system's has had kernel panic (ubuntu's version of BSOD) about 2 times now and some random errors pop up while using the system. The experience isnt very painful but I would be doing a fresh install soon anyway. I'm sure that would alleviate the issues.
I don't usually upgrade when a new version comes out but decided to try it out this time around. Maybe its cos I upgraded during beta 2. Whatever the reason, I would be doing a fresh install as soon as I can download the iso.
Computers / Re: Ubuntu Linux by muyiscoi(m): 6:51pm On Apr 12, 2013
I gave up on wine years ago. It is just too unpredictable. Some stuff work perfectly, others not at all, while some load but can do next to nothing. Also, at the present, virtually all the apps I use on a daily basis have linux versions or capable equivalent. I keep a windows 7 VM around for that odd moment when I need to use windows for whatever reason. My laptop is fast enough that I don't notice any performance bump while virtualizing, so that's an ideal solution for me
Computers / Re: Ubuntu Linux by muyiscoi(m): 11:07pm On Apr 08, 2013
@digitalEve Ubuntu is a completely different OS from windows, and so, your .exe applications would not work. You have to install applications made and packaged to run on ubuntu. Depending on the version you are running, you should have the "Ubuntu Software Centre". Browse there for applications to install.

In other news, just upgraded to 13.04. This is the first time I am upgrading. Normally, I just download the iso and do a fresh install, since I have a separate /home partition (always a good idea). Anyway, the upgrade went fairly smoothly. There were a few errors that made me question if my system would boot after the upgrade but it did n I haven't had an issue since.
I have noticed a few performance increases in Unity and overall, its looking good. In fact, its pretty stable for a beta. One thing i don't like though, is Files (nee Nautilus). It just looks alien to the rest of the desktop and is sticking out like a sore thumb. Gonna keep exploring to see if there r some goodies I might have missed
Computers / Re: Ubuntu Linux by muyiscoi(m): 9:08pm On Mar 31, 2013
or better still, just double click on it, wait for the software centre to load and click "install"... assuming you're on Ubuntu that is
