A 31-year-old suspected internet fraudster, otherwise known as ‘Yahoo Yahoo’ identified as Remember Salubi, was in the early hours of Tuesday caught by security agents around the Delta State University allegedly picking sanitary pads, diapers and female pants in one of the hotels.

The incident happened few weeks after a female student, Elozino Ogege of the institution was allegedly killed by suspected Yahoo boys and parts of her body removed.

It was gathered that the suspect was caught in the act in the early hours with female pants, sanitary pads, and diapers and was beaten to pulp by the security agents including angry mob despite his plea for mercy.

It was further gathered that the suspect confessed to the crime, saying that he was mandated by a native doctor to bring sanitary pads, diapers and female pants for rituals and get rich quickly.

He added that he had been involved in the act in recent times through the help of some of the students on campus.

Angered by his confession, the angry mob was said to have assembled tyres and premium motor spirit (PMS) popularly called Petrol to set him on fire but for the intervention of the policemen who were called to the scene and later took him away to the police station at Abraka police division

The police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Andrew Aniamaka, who confirmed that the suspect was arrested and he is currently being detained at Abraka police division, said investigation was ongoing.

He said, “The police are currently searching for the Yahoo boys across the state, and the police will do everything possible to bring them to book, the police have strategized to ensure these group of fraudsters and ritualists are brought to book including other criminals.”

JAMB suspends sale of forms for the 2019 UTME till January, 2019 as can be seen in this Tweet on JAMB's official handle.

Remember the board had earlier announced that the sale of JAMB Forms will begin sometime in December precisely on December, 6th.

The new January Sales Date is yet to be released to the public.

ASUU Strike Update: The Federal Government had implemented "No work, no Pay" rule against the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) who are currently on strike.
The FG sent a memo through the National Universities Commission to all Vice Chancellors of the universities across the country directing them to stop the payment of Lecturers.

Excerpts of the memo read, "In view of the current Industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, the Federal Government has directed that there shall be no payment of any form of salaries and allowances to the staff on strike in federal and inter-varsity centres.

“Consequently, I am to direct vice-chancellors to apply the “No-Work-No-Pay” rule. However, universities and inter-varsity centres are to pay salaries and allowances to non-teaching staff.

All Vice-Chancellors and Directors of Centers should note that the salaries to staff on strike from whatever source of funds shall be viewed as a violation of extant rules and directive of the Federal Government of Nigeria”.

But in another development, the Federal Government has withdrawn the recent threat to activate the ‘no work no pay policy’ against striking University teachers.

This was disclosed by the National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, in a chat with Vanguard.

Ogunyemi also said that the negotiation meeting between ASUU and the Federal Government would continue on Monday (3rd December), stressing that what the union was doing was to rescue the education sector from imminent collapse and to ensure that the children of the poor get access to quality and affordable education.

The ASUU boss also said that last Friday’s meeting between the two parties did not yield many results.

He said:

"Well, we have confirmed that they have withdrawn that threat (no work no pay). So it appears the threat is not there for now.
But even if the threat is there, we are prepared for that because for our members, no sacrifice is too much to salvage Nigeria’s education.

Shortly before our action while the NLC (Nigeria Labour Congress) hullabaloo was going on with federal government, they went to the Federal Executive Council that they were activating that rule.”

ASUU Tells Parents, Students What To Do As Strike Continues.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has appealed to parents and students to be patient over its decision to reposition and save the country’s university system from total collapse.

ASUU National President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Thursday.

You may recall that the university lecturers had embarked on a strike, demanding for the implementation of the 2009 agreement it entered into with the Federal Government of the day.

Ogunyemi said that the strike was not to short-change neither the students nor the parents and other key stakeholders but to save the country’s university system from collapse.

He said, “We want to call on our students and parents to show understanding with our struggle as we are in this together.
“The whole essence of this struggle is to ensure that our students get worthy and deserving certificates that they will be proud of anywhere they may find themselves in the world.

“The struggle is to ensure too that we save Nigerian universities from going the way our public primary and secondary schools have gone.
“Today, most parents are sending their children and wards to private primary and secondary schools around the country because of the perceived or alleged falling standards.

“We do not want our universities to go the same way because a lot of our parents may not be able to afford the private university fees.
The National President also stated that there was an urgent need for both the Federal and State Governments to reconsider their approach towards the development of universities in the country, to avoid an outright collapse in the near future.

“The sad thing now is that the World Bank is giving funds to some private universities to thrive over public universities.

“Unless Nigerians rise to the occasion and join ASUU in putting pressure on both the Federal and State Governments to pay adequate attention to our universities, secondary and primary schools, we may be facing a total collapse of our educational sector.

However, he said that university students might be staying longer at home as no concrete resolution had been reached with the Federal Government so far.

The representatives of the union met with the Federal Government on Monday, Nov. 26 but that the meeting ended in a deadlock.

“We met on Monday in order to reach an agreement on the key issues we are agitating for but nothing tangible came out of the meeting.

“Rather than come out with a firm commitment on what to do about these demands, they were appealing to us to go back to the classrooms while they tackle the issues; and to us, they have missed the point.

“We were told that the negotiation will continue on Friday, Nov. 30 but up till now, as we speak, I have not received any notice of meeting to that effect,’’ he said.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), applauded the Federal Government for reducing the cost of JAMB and NECO application forms thereby making education cheaper for the citizens.

Here's an update on  ASUU strike.

On Monday 26th, 2018 the Federal Government and leaders of the Academic Staff Union of Universities held a meeting behind closed doors at the Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja.

This meeting also ended in a deadlock just as the first meeting did. Both parties were unable to reach a middle ground and the meeting ended without a resolution.

This implies that the strike by the lecturers continues as the meeting could not conclude on whether ASUU should return to work or not.

A reliable source privy to details of the meeting told newsmen that the discussions were centred on reviewing the full implementation of the Memorandum of Action (MoA) which the two parties willingly signed in October 2017.

ASUU President, who initially didn't want to speak to newsmen after the meeting later said in a brief session with journalists after the three-hour talks:

"The Federal Government has again failed to reach an agreement with the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) over its ongoing nationwide strike."

He also said that the negotiations with the government would continue at a later date.

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives said it was worried about the ongoing strike which has grounded activities in most universities across the country.

Chairman of the House Committee on Tertiary Education, Mr Aminu Suleiman, stated this when he led members of the committee on an oversight visit to the Ministry of Education.

He appealed to the government and ASUU to go beyond resolving the current industrial action and provide lasting solutions that would make the countless strike actions in the education sector a thing of the past.

The Government, in a statement from the ministry, also said it was committed to ending strikes in the sector despite the challenges of funding.

Attempts to get the Minister of Education to speak concerning the outcome of the meeting failed as he could not be reached.

– A Total and Indefinite Strike –

ASUU commenced a total and indefinite industrial action on November 4 following a meeting of its national leadership at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, the Ondo State capital.

Professor Ogunyemi had told reporters after the meeting that they took the decision due to the poor funding of universities in the country.

A day after the union announced its decision, Professor Ogunyemi accused the government of making cheap promises, saying their members would not be swayed by such.

“We have concluded that promises from the government are very cheap. We are not bothered about what promises the government makes now,” he had said during his appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily.

Hours later, the government through the minister, appealed to the union to call off the ongoing strike.

Mr Adamu who addressed a news conference said, “As the Minister of Education, I feel your pain; I share your concern and I am willing to go to any mile so that together we can change the narrative of this country for the better.”

“I want to use this opportunity to appeal to ASUU to put off this strike in the name of the country, and in view of what the situation is. Come, let us continue the talk; it is something that we have already started.

“And I am optimistic that dialogue will produce better results. For us to negotiate under the pressure of strike, we will end up producing the kind of agreement we had in 2009, which almost all stakeholders have agreed is not easily implementable,” he added.

On November 15, the government met with the union but the meeting ended in a deadlock.

This is the year preceding the 2019 general elections and the activities in the political sector are gaining so much momentum. Many people have come up to the scene to declare their intentions to run for one political office or the other. How are they going to accommodate each other to move our beloved country to greater heights?

On the presidential level, two main elephants have dominated the playing field. The Buhari faction, Atikulated faction and the others. With due respect to the others, we shall not be discussing you here. Let’s go down memory lane.

Once upon a time, there was a country which was a third world country (as the West called them). This country was moving steadily up the economic ladder and things were looking up for the first time in forever. But the people were not satisfied, they wanted more.

Seeing the unrest, the opposition to the government of the day sold the Mandate of “change” to the masses. They won the next election and the rest they say is history.

Now, that time has come again and the opposition to the government of the day has come up with a new mandate seeing that the people are once again dissatisfied with the present government.

The new mandate seems to be resounding with the youths of our society. They have penetrated the political scenery through active participation on social media platforms and making use of beautifully crafted words.

They seem to have won our hearts by practising an all-inclusive government but the question remains will the all-inclusive government continue after they assume power if they win the elections.

Atiku has been quoted to say “40% of my cabinet will be youths and women.” This statement may be seen as a great way to start a campaign but the big question remains: will he be faithful to his promises or follow the paths of his predecessors?

We have seen cases in the past where mandates were not fulfilled after assuming office and citizens were left to fantasize about all that was promised. For instance, when the present government were campaigning, we had a mandate of change and it was on that premise that they were voted in.

Unfortunately, the change we were promised is yet to have a positive impact on the masses. We keep hearing different sides of the same story and the only evidence we have is the ongoing fight against corrupt politicians.

On the flip side of things, the Buhari-led administration is yet to fulfil so many aspects of their mandate. Perhaps, giving them a second chance would give them more time to achieve the goals they had shared with us at their assumption of office.

The administration has been active in the provision of infrastructure. This is clearly seen in the various projects presently going on in the commercial capital of Nigeria, Lagos. Giving the government of the day another chance may mean a growth in the available infrastructure.

As today begins the Presidential and National Assembly campaigns, let us not fail to consider who we will be casting our votes for and why.

We as Nigerian citizens should strive to find out how the government we will be voting in will affect us as students, parents, workers, elders. We should at least ensure that that person should be able to make the change worth it.

As we all know the University of Lagos cannot provide accommodation for all the students of the university because the school hostels are not enough for the available students. This need made it necessary to set up a random system of hostel and bed space allocation.

The system used by Unilag management of the school is known as BALLOTING. In this article, we'll give you tips on how to ballot for Unilag's halls of residence

Balloting is the process of secret voting where students are alotted spaces randomly from the online portal. The balloting process usually takes place at the beginning of a new academic session, for various categories of students who are all vying for the limited hall spaces.

The need for the school hostel is high because it is cheaper and very close to lecture halls.

Getting the perfect school hostel accommodation requires you put your ears to the ground and constantly check the online balloting space – https://unilag.edu.ng

It is also a game of chance and you might end up getting the allocation or you might not; depending on how (un)lucky you are, and how good your internet connection is.

(5)After the balloting process, the system will notify you if your application was successful or not.
(6)Read the guidelines below and adhere strictly to them for your own good. The guidelines are as published by The Dean of Students Affairs (DSA).

Guidelines/ Regulation For Unilag Hostel Balloting

1. The accommodation exercise is strictly an online distribution and allocation of bed spaces.
2. Students should note that there are limited bed spaces due to an increase in the number of students.
3. Allocation of bed spaces will be on the basis of first come, first serve.
4. All freshers shall be distributed into permanent Halls of Residence (HoR). Thereafter they will ballot for bed spaces on the basis of their
assigned HoR.
5. The students with medical challenges (physically challenged inclusive) should register at the Medical Centre; otherwise, their cases will not
be treated by the Students Affairs Division.
6. No sales of scratch cards for accommodation.
7. Students are advised to log on directly to the allocation portal for allocation of bed spaces using matriculation number or jamb registration
number as the case may be.
8. Every student should strictly abide by the timetable for allocation of bed spaces for each category.
9. Illegal sales or purchase of bed spaces attracts rustication for two (2) semesters; any student caught will be disciplined accordingly, so
beware!!!
10. Students must pay their accommodation fee within 3-working days after allocation of bed space, else the bed space stands forfeited
11. Deriving from nine (9) above, another round of balloting will be carried out to give the opportunity to students who did not succeed in the
earlier ballot.
12. Complaints should be channelled through the online helpdesk for accommodation. All complaints shall be attended to promptly. No students
and staff are allowed to gather in or outside the Students Affairs Office.
 13. Re-assignment of HoR based on choice will not be entertained; students with such request shall forfeit his/her allocation.
 14. Under no circumstances should any bed space/room not officially assigned to be occupied by any student.
 15. Students penalised for any form of social and academic misconduct are not eligible for accommodation.
 16. Biological form for staff-child(ren) has been uploaded online, members of staff are expected to fill, print, sign and submit at the Student
Affairs Division (attach a copy of birth certificate and last course registration form of the session). Other necessary information will be
posted on the University Website and in the Information Flash.
 17. All students resident in the HoR shall be issued identification pass/cards, which must be produced on demand at any point in time.
 18. All students are requested to avail themselves of information on accommodation through the Unilag Website, Lagmobile and the
Information Flash.
19. The date for the hostel ballot for 2018/2019 session is from Monday, 19th November - Friday, 23rd November 2018.

ASUU Strike Update Day 12; news reaching us has shown that the ASUU strike action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will still continue for a while as the meeting, held Tuesday, with the Federal Government ended at an impasse.

The ASUU delegation was led by its National President, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi, while the government side had the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige; the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Sonny Echono; and the Accountant-General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris.

No compromise or decision was reached after the meeting to end the ASUU Strike, which began at 3 p.m and ended at 8:15 p.m on Tuesday. The meeting will continue next week.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, however, stated that government’s discussion with ASUU will continue the following week.

According to Ngige the delay in calling ASUU for a discussion was caused by the minimum wage negotiation.

He appealed to ASUU to put the interest of students, who are at the receiving end into consideration.

ASUU president, Biodun Ogunyemi, on the other hand, said the union have tendered its request at the meeting and also confirmed that the ASUU Strike meeting has been adjourned till next week.

According to him, no date has been fixed but “we will communicate the date to you tomorrow,” he told newsmen.

He said the union was forced to embark on the strike after its plea for the implementation of the 2009 agreement fell on deaf ears.

Mr Ogunyemi earlier said the government had promised to take action on issues raised in the last MOU signed by the two parties but “it does appear that federal government is dribbling the union.”

Well, nothing’s stopping you now that you know the lagoon front is on Unilag’s campus. It is located behind the library which stretches down to the back of faculty of business admin to the left, and at the back of the faculty of sciences to the right.
The lagoon front is a good view to oversee the 3rd mainland bridge, and a nice spot to chill with your significant other.

The Adetokunbo Sofoluwe Park
The park was built in honour of the late vice chancellor, Adetokunbo Sofoluwe, who died while in office. It is located directly opposite the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs. The park is a cool hangout spot which can be used to study, chit-chat or just chill. However, what makes this park unique is that it has a charging spot directly under the Adetokunbo Sofoluwe statue, where students usually come to hang and charge their phones as well. Talk about having the best of both worlds.

The Senate Love Garden
If you need a nice romantic spot for a date with that special one, but need to keep it casual, then the Senate love garden is perfect. It is a serene environment especially in the evening, and is quite popular with Unilag students, as the name serves its purpose. Students also meet here to talk over assignments, and chill. Interestingly, the Senate love garden was seen used in various scenes of the popular Nigerian tv series[b] ‘Shuga’[/b].

2001 Café
The 2001 cafeteria is the biggest and most popular food joint in Unilag. It is located right at the heart of the university, called “new hall” which is directly opposite access bank. It is popularly known for the wide variety of African dishes cooked and served at the café, which is attested to by Unilag students.
