Hence, it is the view of the NSCC that members should await further developments which are rapidly unfolding.

Education / 5 Top Reasons Why Goal Setting Is Important For Students by mykwaba: 6:42pm On Jan 04, 2019
Some years ago, while I was a student in one of the Federal Universities in Nigeria, I had written a list of things I wanted to achieve as a student and here are the reasons why goal setting is important for students.

Before going into the details let define what a goal is. According to Wikipedia the exact definition of a goal is:

A desired result a person or a system envisions, plans and commits to achieve. A personal or organizational desired end-point in some sort of assumed development. Many people endeavour to reach goals within a finite time by setting deadlines. In other words, any planning you do for the future regardless of what it is, is a goal.

I wrote down some things that were important for me to achieve during my undergrad days. Vividly, I remember writing them down in my second week in a new environment.

This list helped me decide there and then what I didn’t want and most importantly what I wanted. It gave some clarity and focus that I so desperately needed to stay in school.

Though I didn’t do all the items that was in my list, I discovered after I had graduated that I had achieved more than 80% of all I had set out to do at the beginning of my journey.

There is a popular saying that goes thus: ‘A plan not written down is only a wish’

I didn’t just think about this on my own, I had some older siblings and mentors who guided me through this and helped me set the goals that were most important to me.

So let’s dive into discussing the 5 top reasons you should set goals as a student.

Goals help you know your Priorities:

Goal setting immediately helps you know what is most important to you as a student.

As a student, your primary focus should be your studies but this could get too boring so you may need other activities to help you unwind.

The act of setting goals helps you find out some of the things you like or better still things you would like to do.

Goals give you focus:

Putting your plans into writing gives your brain the much-needed auction to function.

According to Napoleon Hill, putting down your goals into writing sends a strong message to your subconscious which then gives concrete form to your intangible thoughts.

You can have all the potential in the world but without focus your abilities and talent are useless.

Just like how sunlight can't burn through anything without a magnifying glass focusing it, you can't achieve anything unless a goal is focusing your effort.

Because at the end of the day goals are what give you direction in life.

By setting goals for yourself and putting them into writing, you give yourself a target to shoot for.

 Saves you time and energy:

Because you have been able to cut out the clutter and you know what you want to spend your time doing.

This sense of direction is what allows your mind to focus on a target and rather than waste energy and time shooting aimlessly, allows you to hit your target and reach your goal.

You subconsciously keep away from distractions and your focus remains only on the goal. And by the way if you didn't know yet this is how you become successful, you set a goal, you lock it in and then give it your 100%.

Goals Give You Motivation:

Did you know that the root of all the motivation or inspiration you have ever felt in your entire life are goals.

Goal setting provides you the foundation for your drive. By making a goal you give yourself a concrete endpoint to aim for and get excited about.

It gives you something to focus on and put 100% of your effort into and this focus is what develops motivation.

Goals are simply tools to focus your energy in positive directions, these can be changed as your priorities change, new ones added, and others dropped.

Goals Transform Insurmountable Mountains Into Walkable Hills

Many students have big dreams that seem impossible to accomplish like making a first class degree or being the best graduating student.

It’s easy to feel discouraged when you’re staring at a massive, seemingly insurmountable mountain especially when you hear other students talk about how difficult it is to get a first class in your department.

Proper goal setting can help break larger, intimidating aspirations into smaller, more achievable stepping stones.

Planning towards these smaller goals not only makes it easier to formulate a definite plan of action that we can start working on right away, but research has shown that hitting smaller milestones provides real motivation and greater contentment.

Taking our dream of a first class into consideration, you can break down that goal by aiming to do well in all assignments and tests.  Doing this makes it easier to reach the goal of making a first class in the university.

Think you have more reasons? Drop a comment let's know what you have in mind.

What a shock it was to find out that Unilag students sleep outside.

Medical students in the University of Lagos College of Medicine, have been forced to sleep on the road as their hostels have been without power supply for a few days.

The students say no one has explained to them why they have no power as other buildings surrounding their hostels have power.

Kwaba, the premiere online students accommodation portal, has a presence in over seven universities in Nigeria.
We have been able to solve the problem of school accommodation in Nigerian universities by partnering with numerous off-campus accommodation providers to bring the best hostels and lodges to students.

Through careful selection and attention to details, Kwaba, ensures that all the facilities are put in place to make students life much better and easier.

The facilities include but are not limited to air conditioners, fans, alternate power supply, mattresses.

Car Talk / 5 Most Important Things To Do When Your Car Brakes Fail by mykwaba: 3:31pm On Dec 11, 2018
Hi guys, due to the Christmas season and the frequency of long-distance journeys that would be made this season, it is necessary that we be ready for any eventualities that may occur while driving.

In order to ensure safety we did a research and found out that a good percentage of road accidents are caused by human error while others are caused by mechanical faults in the car.

One of such mechanical faults is brake failure and so we will dwell on things to do when your car brakes fail.

STAY CALM:

Your immediate reaction to a faulty brake will be to panic nut this in the actual sense is a recipe for disaster.
When your brakes fail, remembering to stay calm will help you carry out the other actions which will be explained below in order to help you stay alive after the incident.

PUT YOUR HAZARD LIGHTS ON:

After you have calmed yourself down, the next step is to turn on your hazard lights on.
Your hazard lights are turned on by pressing the button that has a triangle with an exclamation mark on it. It’s usually on the dashboard.
This action will inform the cars ahead of you, those behind you and those potentially all around you that you are experiencing some vehicular difficulty.

What this does is to make them give you some extra space so you can maneuver if need be and bring your car to a stop when your brakes fail.

SHIFT TO A LOWER GEAR:

The next thing to do is to move your car to a lower gear. If you drive a manual car, it easier to shift gears.
All you have to do is step on the clutch, shift to a lower gear and release the clutch this will help to slow your car down.

This deceleration makes the engine lose some speed thereby giving room for a safer stop.

If you are using an automatic car, there are several options available. You could either use the gear to shift down or you could use the pedal shift on the steering wheel.

Some cars have the numbers 1, 2 and L which will help you to shift to a lower gear.

Make sure that when you are shifting to a lower gear, you do not shift into a gear that is too low to avoid damaging your engine.

So it’s best to shift to a lower gear that is appropriate for your engine speed and vehicle speed. You do not want to damage your engine while trying to bring your car to a stop.

PUMP YOUR BRAKES:

In the event of brake failure and you have carried out the steps listed above, the next best thing to do is to pump your brakes.
Sometimes pumping your brakes help your car to potentially or barely start working again.

This step does not guarantee your brakes will pick up but it’s worth a try to check if your brakes can barely function in other to help you bring the car to a final stop.

USE YOUR EMERGENCY BRAKES:

When your brakes fail and you have tried to bring your car to a stop by shifting to a lower gear or pumping your brakes.

As a last resort, you should use the emergency brakes. There is a way to do this which and when done correctly it would ensure your car halts completely.

You should avoid completely lifting the hand brake as this may a death wish. So what you have to do is this:

• First of all press down the button at the end of the hand brake,
• After that gradually and slowly lift the lever of the hand. Doing this makes the hand brake work in the same manner as the normal brakes by ensuring that the car slowly comes to a smooth and nice halt.
• When the car has stopped, you can then lift the hand brake to a complete stop.
• Finally, leave the hand brake in this engaged position so that you don’t find yourself releasing the hand brakes and then struggling to stop the car again.

Remember that this has to be done gradually to prevent your car from skidding to a stop thereby making you lose control of the vehicle and this may have some unpredictable results that may not be favourable.

BONUS TIP

This tip is actually the most important. Many people are usually tempted to turn the engine off when car brakes fail.

It is potentially the worst thing to do in this situation as this could make you lose your power steering which would make it much harder to manoeuvre the car.

In a total car brake failure, you want to get as much steering control as possible. You do not want to find yourself without brakes and without a power steering.

The best thing to do is to leave the car on which means the engine is on and it will power the power steering component giving you as much control as you can get in this situation.

Lastly, try to avoid driving the car again after you have brought it to a stop. Get it towed to a mechanic’s shop where it can be fixed and don’t drive it again no matter how close you are to your home.

If you have any more tips please share to help others.
