HappyJoe: I don't think the 511,000 population of Onitsha is confined to the 36.19 square km of "Onitsha proper". We're also talking about Obosi, Nkpor etc. I think Manchester here refers to the Manchester Metropolitan Area. I don't think onitsha metro is well defined in that case because development is still spreading. Onitsha metro according to same source (wikipedia) has a little over 1million population as at 2001(13yrs ago). |

investnow2013: All these cities were at one point like Onitsha!.They didn't allow themselves to reason like Nigerians, but reason objectively when planning a City!.These Cities are with Universities from time they were in same situation like Onitsha!.The planners always think about a City that is self sufficient & reliance in Health & Educational Facilities & infrastructure!.Why is it difficult for us to know that A Modern or even old City always have one or two Higher Educational Facility! I will address the rest of the post if you answer this: Which of those cities you had present Onitsha's population when they were planning as you said? For example: Manchester- Area: 44.65 sq miles (115.6 km²), 2013 population of 514,417 Onitsha- Area: 13.97 sq miles (36.19 km²), 2001 population of 511,000 - wikipedia See why I said you are not being realistic. If you don't consider such statistics when planning all because of status this status that, then you are definitely planning to fail. |

So tell us, where will the university be situated in Onitsha? @bolded, I take it that you are not being realistic enough. Please compare those cities you are citing with Onitsha based on landmass, population, developmental goals and let's see. Ngwanu, the floor is yours! Let me help you City of Vancouver: The 2011 census recorded 603,502 people in the city. The city has an area of 114 km2 (44 sq mi). Even the Greater/Metropolitan Vancouver has 2.4million people. |

If we need to diversify Onitsha, having University in it will do a good job in this regard!. Ndi be anyi ekene m unuooo! @bolded, in what aspect.. Population or landmass? So if you have the power, you will have a university in Onitsha even if it will make the city more congested? Satellite campus will be just enough to cater for management/business courses though. Talking of travelling far for university Education, host towns like Awka, Uli, Igbariam, Nsugbe and Oko are not more than an hour drive from Onitsha. Montaque: my dear,it has been a big argument whether religious men should interfere in "Nigerian" politics, even if,not now. It erodes their credibility in the long run. I remember the slapping saga between ohakim and a priest, the same slapping and rough treatment of a priest by Rochas, the questionable impeachment of the past deputy governor of enugu and the shameless replacement in the office with a bishop, the political stance of fr. Ebube muonso between Ngige and Obiano and so many others. I see all of these issues as a wrong intrusion of the church into politics. I was mad the day a pastor said we should pray against SLS and his cohorts for sponsoring BH. That's why I don't take political pronouncement serious if its from a religious person, especially one who speaks from that inclination. You are on point. |

Nigeria: 18 Years After - Joy Reigns As Basden Special Education Centre Gets FaceliftBy Ikenna Asomba
The Special School for the Blind, Deaf and Dumb otherwise known as the Basden Memorial Special Education Centre, Isulo, in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, was among the 1,320 primary and secondary schools, categorized under (public and public-mission schools) across the three senatorial districts of the state that have been renovated by the state government. This was even as the schools have continued to receive direct government funding.
Governor Willie Obiano of the state had remembered the students and staff of Basden Memorial School for the Blind, Deaf and Dumb, which was established in 1996, to carter for special students for renovation.
The school which had been neglected by successive governments in the last 18 years in terms of infrastructure, as well as conducive learning and teaching environment, received the attention of the Obiano administration following the development of its blueprint expressed through the Wheel of Development. The blueprint is anchored on four pillars including: agriculture, oil and gas, trade as well as commerce and industrialization.
It was against this backdrop that the government also distributed 25,000 computers with internet connectivity, 450 50KVA generators, and 500 school buses, as well as provision of sick bays, libraries to schools in the state.
INFRASTRUCTURE
South East Voice undertook a three-day tour of schools in areas like Uli, Ihiala, Azia, Okija, Ozubulu, Oraifite, Oba, Obosi, Onitsha, Nnewi, Nnobi, Agulu, Adaziani, Neni and Isiakpu.
Other areas also visited include Nise, Nibo, Umuawulu, Mbaukwu, Awgbu, Amaopkala,Ndiowu, Ndikelionwu, Omogho, Awa, Ufuma, Ajalli, Nawfija, Isulo, Ekwulobia, Agulueze Chukwu, Onneh, Achina, Umuchu, Ugah, Achalla, Akpo, Nkpologwu and Nanka among others to confirm the renovation exercise.
In her reaction, the State's Commissioner for Education, Prof. Kate Omenugha told South East Voice that for the Obiano's administration, raising the infrastructural base of the schools was a priority.
According to her, providing comfort for secondary school students in the state "goes beyond the erection of building and equipping it with state-of-the-art equipment, but also focusing on pupils/students development and teacher improvement.
"In ensuring continuity in the administration of Anambra State, the government has gone into serious renovation of dilapidated structures and construction of new structures in basic education schools across the state. "Remarkably, there is an increase in the supervision and monitoring of these projects to achieve the administration's vision of quality infrastructural development in the sector," she said.
On the Universal Basic Education Projects, she said that the, "The construction of 385 units of 4-classroom blocks, renovation of 862 units of 5-classroom blocks giving a total of 1, 247 units of construction spread across the 21 local government areas in the state; construction of toilet facilities including 13 6-rooms VIP's, procurement of pupils' furniture including 629 two-seater wooden desk and 545 ECCD round tables and chairs.
"Others are construction of fencing round the school compound in 37 primary schools and two culverts in two primary schools. This has helped to create child-friendly environment and reduced the extent of infrastructural decay in schools, even as the 2014 matching grant of N952, 297, 297.30 has been released to UBEC Abuja."
Speaking further she said to continuously meet the needs and challenges of education, the government has gone ahead to acquire two more secondary schools, Ebe Unity College, Ukpor, in Nnewi South Local Government Area, LGA. and Anthony Obaze Community Secondary School, Ochuche, in Ogbaru LGA, putting the number of secondary schools in the state to 256.
According to her, "Other infrastructural strides taken by the Willie Obiano adminis-tration include, completion of provision of power generating set to 420 schools in the state along with 50KVA generators to 110 schools; and 30KVA to 310 schools. Furthermore, internet facilities were provided by Galaxy Backbone just as N30 million approved for St. Mary's High School, Ifite Dunu for its rehabilitation. Five million approved as counterpart funding for the development of Community Education Resource Centre, CERC, by the state Ministry of Education, leading to the equipment of the Creche at the centre."
SECURITY
"The government has also keyed into the safe school initiatives by the provision of Hilux Patrol vans to the 33 police stations in view of the increasing security network within the Nwafor Orizu College of Education environs; setting-up a six- member committee to look into cult activities in the schools with a view to stemming the tide. All secondary schools in the state will be fenced in this order. They include 10 Girls' Boarding Secondary Schools in Awka Etiti, Mater Amabilis, Umuoji, Onitsha, Ozubulu, Anglican Girls Secondary School, Ogidi, GSS Oraifite, GSS Ojoto, GSS Igboukwu, GSS Uga and the Eastern Academy, Onitsha.
"Four security men and women called School Marshals are being trained for recruitment in all secondary and primary schools in the state. All these are geared towards reduction in the theft and vandalism of equipment in the schools, as well as securing lives."
On teachers' welfare and improvement, among other things, she said: "For Obiano's administration, teachers' welfare ranks very high in priority. As part of the strategy, there has been introduction of a rigorous recruitment exercise and revised remuneration for teachers to attract the best resources in Nigeria across all levels of education in the state. Over 5000 additional teachers have been employed to ensure pupils -to- teacher ratio improves from 24:1 to 15:1.
"There has been deployment of 3000 NCE holders to various primary schools on April 1, 2014, thereby reducing staff vacancies existing in our primary schools especially in rural areas.
"Approval has been given for the payment of arrears of promotion exercise for the years 2012 and 2013 for tutorial and non tutorial staff, thus boosting the morale of teachers, and resulting in improved performance and productivity."
QUALITY ASSURANCE
"Under the watch of Governor Obiano, a lot of structures are in place to ensure that this is effectively done. The monitoring and evaluation is squarely in place, through the provision of six project vehicles for the ministry of education to ensure effective monitoring, through the Quality Assurance Unit in the Ministry of Education. Two Toyota Hilux vans were also approved for the Post Primary School Service Commission, PPSSC, to conduct intensive supervision and monitoring of the implementation of the new curriculum for quality service delivery just as Visitation Panels are in place at Anambra State University, Uli and Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe among others."
"The administration has taken capacity building for teachers very seriously. Between June 16 and June 20, 2014, staff of the state Ministry of Education including directors, zonal education officers, area education officers and PROs among others were trained to others to key into the e-governance of this administration. Microsoft conducted the train-the-trainers' workshop for 52 ICT demonstrators in schools among others. We are also retraining 256 principals, 100 internal Auditors of the PPSSC and 256 Bursars/teacher Bursars of PPSSC; participation in Ebola Virus Disease Management Training, EVD, in 256 Secondary Schools among others." |

investnow2013: @cyrane,There are many good sites for Universities in Onitsha like GRA Phase 3,Okpoko as part of its regeneration , Metalurgical institute site,Nkwele,Peoples Club ground, etc etc! I differ on that. Onitsha is already over populated for its land mass. Having more unis will push more and more people into Onitsha. Anywhere else aside Onitsha, Awka and Nnewi; Anambra North can accommodate such. It is not just about the university's immediate environment, consider also the massive influx of people the town and adjoining communities will experience. For instance, if you know how dull those host communities look during school breaks, you will better understand the impact of the institutions in those places. The goal should even be devising means to move more people out of Onitsha at least periodically, except during the holidays when students will come home. |

A NEW YEAR MESSAGE FROM THE GOVERNOR OF ANAMBRA STATE, HIS EXCELLENCY CHIEF WILLIE OBIANO, JANUARY 1, 2015
My dear Ndi Anambra, I bring you warm greetings as we enter into a new year. We should be grateful, individually and collectively that God saw us through 2014 and ask for Divine guidance in 2015. Fellow citizens, the New Year presents us a chance to look inwards to re-appraise ourselves and look outwards and renew our faith in God. Indeed, it is a time to make resolutions and rededicate ourselves to the values that define us and the challenges and struggles that shape our evolving society. Above all, the New Year is a time to freshen up our convictions on the ties that bind us together as one people who must break through the limitations of time and resources to lay a solid foundation for hope. The future of any society lies in its capacity to look beyond the darkness and doubts of today and see a glimmer of hope in the shadows of tomorrow.
Ndi Anambra, we look back at where we are coming from to where we are today and where we are heading to in the future, we can all see that our tomorrow will be greater than our yesterday. Our state is now in its 23rd year. Although this great state may not have started out strong, it has over the last couple of years picked up momentum. We are committed to taking the state to greater heights with our articulated Blue Print.
Ndi Anambra, looking back, we can all see that 2014 was a phenomenal year in all respects. It was the year when after a glorious 8-year tenure of my predecessor, former Governor Peter Obi, our beloved state witnessed the smoothest transition from one administration to another without the usual rancor that marked such changeovers in the past. That transition opened a new vista in the evolution of our democratic culture and restored our faith in our collective ability to be masters of our own house.
YEAR 2014 IN RETROSPECT
Ndi Anambra the out-gone year was indeed a year of great beginnings for my administration. We began on a consultative note – holding extensive consultations with critical segments of the society and finally holding a stakeholders forum with our distinguished citizens. From these consultations, we collectively resolved to build a free and prosperous society that we will be proud to bequeath our children.
Our first focus was on the security of our state with a view to creating an enabling and secure environment for our people and for investors. Following a very successful Security Summit that attracted some of the most notable experts in the security business from across the world, we commenced a blistering offensive against crime and criminality in Anambra State. The launch of the Joint Task Force on security, otherwise known as Operation Kpochapu marked the beginning of the journey to wipe out kidnapping, violent armed robbery and the trade on hard drugs in Anambra State.
Ndi Anambra, since April 2014, we have proved that with determination and focus, we can emancipate our dear state from vicious criminals that have made life miserable to our people for ages. In so doing, we have successfully opened the floodgates to the investment community and attracted a massive inflow of investments into Anambra State. In the outgone year, my administration attracted $1.63bn investments into Anambra State. In This year, our goal is to triple that figure and establish a solid foundation for the growth of a buoyant domestic economy. We remain faithful to our mantra, to make Anambra the first destination of choice for both foreign and domestic investors.
In furtherance of this, we have set up various committees that will provide the critical thinking in key socio-economic areas of the state and advise government on the best approaches to solving our numerous developmental challenges. These committees are made up of experts and highly resourceful Anambra indigenes with track records of excellence in their areas of expertise in Nigeria and abroad. Every modern government works with structures such as these to achieve set objectives. I have no doubt that when we begin to implement the recommendations of these committees, our dear state will eventually take-over the driving seat of Nigeria’s fastest growing states.
My dear Ndi Anambra, in the past year, we also took several bold steps including one which envisions an ultra-modern capital territory for our beloved state. The new Awka Capital Development Authority (ACDA) has successfully conducted a comparative study of three model cities across the world with a view to fashioning out a modern city that will reflect our great cultural heritage, our well-known drive for excellence and our readiness to compete in a fast changing world, in one fell swoop. In addition, the ACDA Board has concluded extensive consultations with the various stakeholders, traditional rulers, community heads, notable associations and opinion leaders within the designated areas to win their support to the project. I have no doubt that with the support of these stakeholders; our dream of a befitting capital city will come true in a peaceful atmosphere.
Ndi Anambra, in the outgone year also, we kept our campaign promise of 4Cs ... to continue, complete, commission and commence a set of new initiatives that will change our beloved state for good. Along this line, we have continued all the projects we inherited from the previous administration and flagged off new ones that will enlarge the scope of our quest for accelerated development.
We launched a new cultural identity and brand for our people and gave Anambra a new Anthem, logo and flag that succinctly capture the identity and promise we hold out as a great people. We also took a bold step to engineer a new ethical order with the introduction of the new Anambra Core Values into the school system. We have expanded the boundaries of freedom for our people and brought back nightlife to our cities. Above all, we capped the year up with an amazing holiday season -- a Christmas; celebrated with fanfare and in an atmosphere of unfettered freedom from the usual traffic snarls and insecurity that made previous Christmas Seasons a miserable experience for our people in the past.
OUR ASPIRATIONS IN THE NEW YEAR
My dear Ndi Anambra, our world, country and dear state cannot escape the challenges that are part of everyday living. Many experts predict that 2015 will be a tough year to Nigeria due to falling oil prices. Despite this scenario, our aspirations this year are bigger than the past years. Umunnem, our hopes and dreams shall not fall with the falling oil prices. With our enormous human and material resources, we shall not surrender our ambitions to the dwindling oil prices in the international markets. We shall draw on history and our past accomplishments to stretch the scope of our vision and expand the boundaries of our possibilities.
Ndi Anambra, when we took over the reins of leadership in March last year, our Internally Generated Revenue stood at N500m a month. In less than one year, we grew it to over N1bn. This year, we shall triple that figure. This will insulate us from the shock of falling oil prices and a possible dip in federal allocations to states. Therefore, the same determination with which we have pursued our security challenges is what we will bring to fighting the leakages in our IGR. I urge you all to pay your taxes and other statutory levies and fees as good citizens of Anambra State. Let me assure you that we have now harmonized the taxes collected by the State and Local Governments to eliminate multiple taxations for the same revenue windows.
This year too, we shall complete many landmark projects like the three flyovers in Awka and the six-lane stretch of road from Amawbia to Amansea. We shall also complete and commission the Agulu Lake Hotel Resort and other critical road projects we inherited from my predecessor. We shall flag off more projects covering the Four Pillars of Development of this administration and lay the foundation for an ambitious economic growth. Our investment in security shall be more robust this year as we intend to re-invigorate and refocus the security network in the state to ensure a rapid transition to crime detection and prevention. We shall continue to maintain a zero tolerance of crime in Anambra State.
In other aspects of our programmes; we shall develop new markets and re-organize and upgrade existing ones. We shall also direct more investments to the Oil & Gas sector to make a strong case for our inclusion in the NDDC and to be listed among Nigeria’s oil producing states. In addition, we shall expand our current capacity in the Agricultural Sector and ensure the implementation of all the MoUs we signed in the sector in the outgone year. As adequately captured in our budget for this year, all the Enablers like Education, Healthcare and other key segments of society will get a deserved attention.
Ndi Anambra, this is a year of hope and fulfillment. This year, we shall work for a new social and economic order in Anambra State. We shall build strong families to ensure the emergence of stronger communities. We shall force positive change on various aspects of our collective life that have been resistant to our collective march to progress. Ndi Anambra, this year is an election year. It is a very important year in our national history. We all have a collective responsibility to play an active role in the coming elections. We must all strive to get our Permanent Voters Cards to enable us participate in the voting process. Those of us who have yet to get their cards should do so within the available window in this New Year. We must remember to vote for all APGA flag-bearers in the coming elections. Let us also remember to vote for President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan in the Presidential Election. President Jonathan is our candidate and we must vote for him.
Ndi Anambra, before us lies an awesome year! This year, we shall stretch to a new height in our pursuit of Excellence and prove to the world that Anambra State can be great again! Let us build a land of progress and lift our homeland high!
God bless Anambra State that we love! God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Happy New Year to you all!

OdenigboAroli: And they make ot so high that it hides the beauty of the house and thats not good for the city aesthetics. Even if they want to fence the building why cant they design a more fanciful type that will reflect to the streets. And what about wire fence with bushes and flowers planter around it to radiate beauty. The height was to deter criminals. Hopefully it starts changing as from now that aura of security is being felt. Govt can as well help enact such laws prohibiting high perimeter fencing at certain places. If you are not smart enough these hirelings can cause you to believe a black painting is white. These same jobbers will quickly switch camp if their candidate loses. Prophet of doom! FreeGlobe: From now to March is a long time for courts to deliver judgment. I predict Obiano will be the first "Governor (s)elect" in Nigeria that will not be sworn in. |

I don't talk carelessly that's why I never change my moniker. The question should be, how many stooge did you read in the posts? |

FreeGlobe: you are a nobody on nairaland. Nobody knows you here or takes you seriously. Even Abagworo the ikwerre boy is more influencial than you here Yet it does not take away the persona non grata status on Anambra threads. So much for being influential, hahaha |

FreeGlobe: [s]This frustrated animal. when I was critiquing Obiano during the campaign I did it because[/s] I had my own candidate I was supporting then and we all believed Peter obi wanted to use Obiano to cover his loot [s]but as fate would have it, Obiano won and went on and refused to be Obi's puppet while performing so why shouldn't I support him as an Anambra person you fool? unlike obi, everyone is supporting Obiano, both Ngige, Authur Eze, joe igbokwe etc. And no, Obiano and obi are not inseperable. They are not even in the same party. shut your trap boy[/s] FreeGlobe: Lets see how Peter Obi/apga will win. whether its the civil servants he has dealt wickedly on that will vote him. FreeGlobe: I just placed a call home and the tone is Peter Obi and his gang must not win. Its only Nov 16 everybody will see the outcome FreeGlobe: Peter Obi is our greatest enemy. we must reject him and his cronies. Willy obiano ko FreeGlobe: At this point the worst candidate for this election is better than the Obi's stooge FreeGlobe: Well, if there has to be an alternative it does not have to be Peter Obi's stooge. APC must win Anambra over APGA in Anambra, its unnegotiable |
