When Obidíots were saying that Moghalu agreed to removal of import restrictions, I argued and now the truth has been revealed.

seunmsg:
OP, let’s discuss this “groundbreaking” idea of Peter Obi that will finally rescue the economy of Nigeria.

The items on the import prohibition list includes rice (through land borders), bagged cement, canned drinks, live and dead poultry products, vegetable oil, noodles, spaghetti, soap, footwear etc. These are items we are now producing substantially in Nigeria and as such, we don’t need to waste scarce forex on their importation.

Now that you guys are saying we should remove the restriction on the importation of these items, where exactly are we going to get forex to pay for these imports considering we are currently struggling to meet our import bills even with the restriction?

The higher taxes that will be imposed on these items will definitely be in Naira and as such, will add nothing to our forex. Even at that, the high taxes will be passed to the consumers thereby increasing the level of inflation. Again, Nigerians have a very high taste for foreign products as it depicts class and affluence. How will local producers of these items compete? When rice farmers and poultry owners start losing their market to imported products, what do you think will happen to the jobs in these sectors?
Obidíots are sheeps.

Are you surprised? grin

If they refuse, the Federal Government should enforce the Judgment of the Court by deregistering them grin

The government should not stop at that.

Vice-chancellors must account for hundreds of billions worth of TETFUND grants they have embezzled.

The lecturers must also write apology letters to students and add 20 marks to the score of students because you cannot stay 8 months at home blocking highways and bullying online without forgetting what you were taught in January. It should be a criteria for paying them the 8 months salary they didn't work for.

For more than 40 years, ASUU has shattered the dreams of great Nigerian students.

Below is a picture of ASSU strike being called off in 1981. My mother had just started Primary School in 1981. 41 years later a useless congress of indecent academicians are still frustrating students.

PoliticsRe: African Countries Population Living Below The Extreme Poverty Line In 2022 by N3TRAL:
I have read Statista's publication regarding the subject matter.

The definition of extreme poverty line, according to Statista, is living below $1.90 a day. This morning, dollar sold for 745 Naira at Nigeria's parallel money market. Put differently, if you live below 1500 Naira daily, you fall within the poverty spectrum.

Purchasing Power Parity should be taken into consideration because going by the research variables of Statista, the minimum wage in Nigeria is below the poverty line grin

30,000 Naira a month means that the minimum wage provides for roughly 1000 Naira a day. I presume that the official dollar exchange rate of $400-$450 was used which would mean that no government employee made it below the extreme poverty line. The statistics could have been worse.

Nigeria's huge population also makes the statistics depressing for us.

Corruption is the reason why Nigeria is still importing petroleum products and has no functional refinery after nearly 24 years of return to democracy.

Importation of refined petroleum products is the biggest consumer of our Forex. Fix that problem and Nigeria's economy will improve.

How then do you say importation ranks higher than corruption as a cause of Nigeria's terrible exchange rate?
You've confirmed my conclusion.

Nigeria loses dollars to importation of refined petroleum products- a direct cause.

Your claim that Nigeria is "importing" petroleum because of corruption makes corruption a remote cause.

A direct cause ranks higher than a remote cause.

Our refineries are no longer functional not because of corruption alone. A government has no business running companies. The socialist/welfarist management of the defunct refineries is also a major reason for their collapse.

At least you responded politely...

Do you think the import restrictions on cement is well thought out?
What is the benefit to ordinary Nigerians?
Don't you think it favors just the companies owners and not the masses because it would have made the prices of those goods cheaper compared to the exploitation people are currently facing.

You are talking about indomie, compare the prices of noodles when the sector had no restrictions to this period.

Just tell yourself the truth, what is the benefit to ordinary Nigerians OR are the prices after better than the prices prior to the restrictions?

What Nigeria needs is selective restrictions and open market.

Sectors with high prices(big players, big industries etc) should be make unrestricted to give room to competition which may give rise to lowering of prices, and sectors that are majorly occupied by start-ups, SMEs should be restricted to allow them grow, just as other reasonable leaders are doing in other countries.

This is not a rocket science, remove the hatred and political differences and you will understand what Peter Obi said very well.
The price of dollars in the Nigerian money market is high because of scarcity of dollars.

If Dangote produces his cement in Nigeria in Naira and pays its workers in Naira and you buy in Naira, no dollar is lost in Nigeria.

If Dufil produces indomie in Nigeria in Naira and pays its workers in Naira and you buy indomie in Naira, no dollar is lost in Nigeria.

Importation of cement or indomie means that you will lose hundreds of millions of dollars annually, that can be used for other things, to buy the same cement and noodles that could have been produced in Nigeria without you losing that amount of dollars.

Importation reduces dollars in the economy thereby making the Naira lose its value consistently.

This is the simplest topic in economics. grin

Importation is not out problem.

We are not importing the right things.

People buy our crude. Refine and sell to us for higher price.

People buy our cocoa, refine and sell chocolate to us.

People buy our palm refine and sell back to us.

DO u get where I'm going with this?

We are importing finished products and exporting raw material currently.

That's a recipe for failure. You can't block importation to help local consumption. Demand and supply doesn't care about your feeling.

Shift us from consumption of finished product to exporters of finished product.

Currently we import fuel when we have crude. Why not refine here in Nigeria.

Corruption.

So. U see. We need to get a president ready to work. And I'm sorry we don't need a sick president.
Importation ranks higher as a cause of our terrible exchange rate than corruption grin

You are du mb bro.

Does the purported restrictions affect people like dangote, BUA etc?

The statement included both export and import, and forex, but in your dishonesty you decided to twist it to suit your ev il(dishonesty) purpose.
There is import restriction on cement that is why Dangote and Bua can successfully run their factories.

There's import restriction on noodles, that is why dufil (indomie) exists.

There is import restriction on some categories of pharmaceuticals, that is why emzor exists and employs pharmacy graduates every year.

There's import restriction on poultry that is why poultry farmers have jobs.

Removing import restriction contradicts the wish for Nigeria to become a producing economy because our fragile local manufacturers will be competing with manufacturers from countries with comparative advantage.

Nigeria will be a dumping ground.

I believe that's the case because who born Yahaya Bello to seal Dangote's factory?

Even people that produce biscuit will close their factories.

It is the main reason I choose Tinubu over any candidate.

If Peter Obi's first series of media tours didn't have the central theme of saving money in the bank, maybe I'd be an Obidient sheep today.

Even Atiku Abubakar would build a better economy than Obi.

No developing country has succeeded by hoarding money that is always needed for injection.

Peter Obi himself is a capitalist but on a personal level, he isn't even a better capitalist than Tinubu. If he was, there should have been no ShopRite in Nigeria in the first place because he inherited a lot from his parents to have exported his retail brand to nearby countries.

His idea of capitalism as a leader is even worse because his investment in the international brewery is a loss to Anambra State.
