NA today? When you hear one of the boys in the alleged ABSU rape video claim that he is a law student!!! What future for justice in Nigeria? How many more of such are practising today ![]() |
Excellent topic! There is a serious need for us to change our mindsets in our approach to architecture in this country. Sometimes I have seen property designs on this forum and I cringe in despair when I see the vastness of glazed walls exposed directly to the sun's glare and shudder to think about the cost of attaining internal comfort in those spaces. Wastefulness in roof design with useless roof slopes irrespective of where the building is located and how many months that zone has rainfall a year. We might need to take a good look at the traditional architecture of the different zones of our country and learn some things about how to design appropriately. And, no! I am not saying we should be regressing, but I am saying that just as mathematics begins from basic concepts, so Nigerian architecture should develop from the basics of the Nigerian environment. There are communities in parts of Nigeria that used glazed pottery for floor design: today we import cheap and inferior material in the name of "modern"! Yet there are places where these have been in use in our own land: how do we take these to the next step? Cooling our interiors? Keeping out the heat and dust but letting in natural light remains a challenge, decoration, built in storage space? I look forward to the follow up on this discussion and fervently pray that it does not degenerate into mindless drivel, |
This is a very interesting thread: thankfully still with its head above water and no insults! Considering making a choice with renovating and building new, I would opt for renovation especially with the old buildings that we find in many of our city centres. The workmanship is often excellent, and the renovation needed could be minimal, and affect only the interior spaces. I am shocked that people buy up buildings in historic centres and tear them down completely to build monstrosities all in the name of "modernisation" and "big boyism" (did i spell that right?). Some things just cannot be bought with all the money in the world and tearing down the evidence of building construction history in our cities is not going to help us in the long term. Finally Brabus, concerning the terrace building image you have shared, quick question from a technical point of view: I notice that there is extensive glazing around the building and what comes to my mind immediately is thermal gain in the interiors: what mechanism, other than mechanical, is in place to ensure that the interiors are cool through out the building (i notice that the courtyard in the centre appears to provide some shading for the windows on tht side but it is not so evident on the left hand view). thanks again for this interesting topic, ; |
It is all nice and good to ask for the country to be split, it has become a recurring chant in the past few weeks. But I have yet to read anyone give a useful suggestion on how this can be done, along what lines the splits should occur, meaningful and useful critique and not just a whole lot of useless dribble, part of an unending mass chorus!!! |

what inflated figures, you will just sit there talking rubbish, we all came out enmass to vote for GEJ IN the south and notherners voted more for Buhari so what is the nonsense you are talking about, mschewww Obviously in your experience a 95% lead is "normal". What was the voters' turnout then? 105%? You are missing the point completely, He was poised to win but it would have been so much better if the margins were like that of Lagos State at 65%. No one was innocent in this. The North u speak of, did you take a good look at the results? The man won some of the states in the north! Stop being so sentimental!!! |
The man was bound to win because the opposition could not get its act together. But those inflated figures from the SE and SS are very scary! I wish that things had been left to happen naturally cos he definitely would have won. But with all this wuru wuru, i am afraid that we are back to business as usual as he has no moral authority whatsoever to fight corruption, same as Baba in his "second coming"! |
This is sad. Would we be so quick to cheer if this happened in our country and the British or Americans did this in order to install "democracy"? Where was ECOWAS (ECOMOG)? AU? Chasing the madman in the desert? Sure Gbagbo was wrong in refusing to handover, if truly he lost the elections. But are we sure his arrest is an end to the problems or just the beginning of a downward spiral? Lord have mercy! |
Sagamite: passyjango:I am not sure that the "respect" being dished out to those who are being "respected" now is about their age as much as about the fact that they have money and power. Sadly these two things have become determinants in whom we "respect", anyway, enjoy your election results. |
@ passyjango:I hope this reply of yours is still valid years down the road when you are white haired and the young generation "dis" you! You could try a little courtesy across the board. you wont be young forever o! |
