The Nigeria Police Force have dismissed allegations of torture and crimes levelled against the the special anti-robbery squad (SARS). SARS was established by the Nigeria police to fight violent crimes. On Saturday, Some Nigerians took to the social media to condemn the “careless” regard for human lives which they say is evident in operations of SARS operatives. While calling for the proscription of the squad, they accused SARS of maltreating and torturing innocent citizens at will. But the police said such accusations should be dismissed by Nigerians. Speaking to TheCable on Sunday, Jimoh Moshood, police spokesman, said SARS has lived up to its duty of curbing violent crimes and so, calls for its proscription should be “totally condemned”. “As we speak, SARS is doing fantastically well across the country in reducing incidents of robbery to the barest minimum… they are doing very, very well,” Moshood said. “There has not been any specific violation of human rights against any SARS personnel. So anybody that is spreading such a rumour is not doing the nation any good. “SARS has no excesses and when there is any, we do investigate. “The call for SARS to be scrapped should be condemned by all well-meaning Nigerians. Anybody calling for their proscription is not doing the nation any good and such people should be suspected as having something to hide.” Moshood urges Nigerians with complaints against any police officer – “whether SARS or any other personnel” – to channel their complaints through established channels. “Accessibility (to the police in cases of complaints) is very possible, he said, adding: “We do not take any infraction or violation of human right of any Nigerian likely. You know that so many police officers have been dismissed and even charged to court.” “So, Nigerians should not give in to insinuations from people that just come to the social media and start spreading falsehood. Such people spreading such information may likely be armed robbers themselves. “There is laid down rules for police procedures and any police officer that go beyond boundary to do something outrageous which is against the law is apprehended.” https://www.thecable.ng/sars-fantastically-well-police-kick-endsars-campaign/amp |

OrderPaperToday – The Senate has extended the duration of investigation into the controversial return of the former chairman of the Presidential Task force Team on Pension Reforms, (PTTPR), Abdulrasheed Maina. This is because of a discovery of alleged looting of some 222 properties already recovered from the scam by security operatives investigating the pensions fraud. Recall that on October 24, Senator Isa Misau (APC, Bauchi) raised a point of order which asked the Senate to probe Maina’s audacious return and reinstatement into public service in spite of being wanted by Interpol at the behest of the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Maina was alleged to have masterminded pension fraud running into billions of naira on which basis he was being investigated both by the Senate and the EFCC before he fled the country. He returned stealthily into the country and got posted into the service as a deputy director in the Ministry of Interior before the matter was busted by the media. The Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazzau, Head of Service of the Federation, Winifred Oyo-Ita and the Attorney- General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami were reported to have been involved in the scandal of Maina’s shocking return. Based on Misau’s motion, the Senate resolved that its committees on public service, internal affairs, anti-corruption, establishment, judiciary be empanelled to determine the controversy and to report back to plenary in a month. The ad-hoc committee comprised of the chairmen and vice-chairmen of the identified committees. The committee had thereafter met on several occasions with some of the accused parties but at some point it became a closed door affair. But giving an update of the committee’s work on Thursday, the chairman, Sen. Emmanuel Paulker (PDP, Bayelsa) gave reasons why the committee could not table a report as expected. Paulker said new revelations have emanated from the investigations. The revelations bordered on some estate properties recovered during Mania’s investigations but which have been stolen by some unnamed persons. Paulker said: “We have been on this matter since October 24. Tomorrow will make a month. Because of the complexities of this issue, we cannot table the report as it stands now and we seek for extension. “During the investigation, certain issues arose that this mandate of the senate did not cover. Mr. President, suffice it to note that it was revealed during the investigation that some estate properties were recovered during Maina’s investigation into pension fraud. “And since this mandate did not cover that aspect of resolution, I want to come under order 42 and 52 so that the standing committee can now come up with a motion that Senate can now empower them to expand her mandate to cover this. “There is an urgent need to investigate the mystery surrounding the recovered properties seized from pension suspects by the Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms. “The task force headed by Maina in the course of discharging the mandate recovered about 222 houses and properties from pension suspects in Abuja and other major cities across the country. “The total recovered assets seized from alleged pension thieves were reported to have been allegedly shared by some interest groups. The Senate ruled that the committee be given a further four weeks to report back to plenary. https://www.orderpaper.ng/senate-extends-maina-gate-probe-re-looted-222-properties/ |

The Guardian News | Nigeria | National Nigeria remains third most terrorised nation, says report By Segun Olaniyi, Abuja | 16 November 2017 | 4:33 am PHOTO:AFP • ‘Boko Haram killings decreased by 80%’ A global report released yesterday says Nigeria remains one of the three most terrorised nations in the world. The 2017 Global Terrorism Index (GTI) also indicates that killing of innocent people by the Boko Haram insurgents in the North east has decreased by 80 per cent. According to the document, Nigeria got the same ranking in 2015 and 2016. It was ranked fourth in 2014. The Global Terrorism Index, which is in its fifth edition, is published annually by an independent, non-partisan, non-profit think tank organisation, Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP). It monitors and measures the impact of terrorism in 163 countries, which covers 99.7 per cent of the world’s population. Advertisement Advertisement The report says Iraq and Afghanistan have not had their ranking changed in the past three years and the two countries are ranked first and second in the 2017 GTI. Among the first 10 countries that suffered the greatest impact of terrorism in 2016, according to the report, are Syria, fourth; Pakistan, fifth; Yemen, sixth; and Somalia, seventh. India, Turkey, and Libya are ranked eighth, ninth and 10th. The report reads in part: “Where terrorism deaths attributed to Boko Haram decreased by 80 per cent, Nigeria recorded the biggest decrease in terrorism with 3,100 fewer people killed compared to 2015. “This reflects both the success of the Multinational Joint Task Force against Boko Haram as well as fractures within the group. “Boko Haram’s decline also contributed to significant reductions in deaths in neighbouring countries with Cameroon, Chad and Niger collectively recording a 75 per cent reduction in deaths or over 1,000 fewer deaths.” Boko Haram, which was the deadliest terrorist group in 2014, according to the report, and recorded 6,700 deaths, is now the third deadliest, with its total number of attributable deaths dropping to 1,079 in 2016. The report says only one attack was recorded in Nigeria among the 20 most fatal terrorist attacks globally in 2016, compared to 2014 when nine of such attacks took place in the country. The attack was reported to have occurred in January 2016 in Dalori when assailants armed with firearms and explosive devices raided the village, killing 88 people. Globally, according to the GTI, deaths resulting from terrorism decreased by 13 per cent to 25,673 in 2016. The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) was the deadliest terrorist group in 2016 killing 50 per cent compared to what it killed in 2015. “The 2016 was the group’s deadliest year ever with ISIL accountable for 9,132 deaths; the majority of which occurred in Iraq. ISIL undertook attacks in 15 countries, which is four more than the previous year. ISIL affiliated groups killed a further 2,417 people and undertook attacks in another 11 countries, although this is six less than the previous year,” according to the report. Boko Haram, the report says, does not have sophisticated financing structure, unlike ISIL, Al-Qa’ida and the Taliban. “The group has historically relied on one time operations to fund its activities. Some of the most common fundraising techniques include abductions for ransoms, kidnapping, extortion of various businesses and bank robberies. “Boko Haram has also been known to raise funds by utilising a network of alliances with other terror organisations, including receiving funding from Al-Qa’ida in the Land of Islamic Maghreb,” the report stated, adding that the group sometimes receive financial support from corrupt politicians and government officials. https://guardian.ng/news/nigeria-remains-third-most-terrorised-nation-says-report/amp/ |
