Nigerian lady in Osun state who was assaulted by police officers during the lockdown awarded N5m as damages The Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo, on Monday, February 1, awarded N5 million damages against the Nigeria Police Force and the Inspector General of Police over the abuse of a woman, Tola Azeez, in Osun State. A video of the officers assaulting the young lady went viral in April 2020. Tola was walking along Odo Ori Market in Iwo, to buy a drug for a relative when the officers who were enforcing the lockdown, descended on her, flogging her mercilessly with their whips. The state police command identified and arrested the erring officers, Ikuesan Taiwo, an inspector and Abass Ibrahim, a corporal. To protest the assault, a fundamental human right enforcement suit was filed by a lawyer, Pelumi Olajengbesi, on behalf of Ms Azeez. The police counsel, F.B Osei, argued that Messrs Taiwo and Ibrahim were agents of the Nigeria Police Force, and that the Nigeria Police Force and the Inspector General of Police could not be held liable for the acts and omission of its officers. This was countered by Mr Olajensgbesi who said the officers carried out the assault during an official assignment as agents of the police force. While delivering judgement on the case on Monday, the presiding judge, Justice Ayo Emmanuel, resolved the matter in favour of the applicant. He held that the actions of the offending officers in the discharge of their official duties as agents of the police amounted to an infringement of the Fundamental Right to Dignity of Ms Azeez, a liability the Nigeria Police Force must shoulder. President Buhari has signed a new law prescribing a six-month jail term for anyone found guilty of flouting any of the COVID19 protocols. The president signed the COVID19 health protection regulations 2021 in Abuja on Wednesday, January 27. The signed law provides a legal framework for the prosecution of any defaulter. The law states that an offence under these Regulations is punishable, on summary conviction, by a fine or a term of six months imprisonment or both in accordance with Section 5 of the Quarantine Act. The law adds that security agents including Personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Nigeria Immigration Service, the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria, and other relevant Local Government, State and Federal Government agencies have been mandated to ensure the enforcement of the these Regulations. "Lexi, pass me the menu please." I said to my friend Lexi. She passed me the menu and I mumbled a thank you to her. Backing against the wall I stares at the menu. After going through the menu I huffed before preparing to cook. My name is Calla Blackwell, I'm a professional chef, I love cooking and trying new recipes.
