LAUTECH, A Legacy Yearning for Sustenance The situation seems to be taking the usual "ghost mode" dimension again, as it was before the two vibrant protests (December and January) embarked upon by Articulate Nigerian students against the over 7-month industrial action holding LAUTECH students' academics into Ransome. It is worrisome that only in Nigeria, undergraduates are found in one level for three (3) consecutive years as a result of the negligence on the part of the Government to value the education of its citizenry. "The labour of our heroes past shall never be in vain", so we read in the National Anthem but it is unfortunate we don't act according to what we pledge. The Nigerian populace and students are watching the constituted authorities as we countdown to the end of January assured by Governor Ajimobi of Oyo State, a Visitor to the Institution, to reopen LAUTECH and we believe he spoke on behalf of the second visitor, Governor Aregbesola of Osun. Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, LAUTECH, is a profound legacy founded by Well-meaning Nigerian leaders, some are Late while some are still hale and hearty. Nigerians need to be well acquainted with the reality that the worth of LAUTECH, is beyond what its proprietors (Oyo and Osun Government) are offering for its academic per excellence ever since the joint-ownership and funding challenges came in to lime light. Late Chief M.K.O. Abiola, the pioneer Chancellor of the institution, who donated a whooping sum of money at the launching of the Higher Education Development Appeal Fund for LAUTECH in 1989, must have had the vision of supporting the incumbent military government to improve Nigeria's tertiary Educational system via establishing LAUTECH. There were also many other philantropists who withdrew from their pockets in cash and pledge with the intent of supporting the government to successfully have the University opened for academic activities. The then Military leaders, the Polytechnic Ibadan governing council, the two inter-ministerial committee members, Nigerian leaders, philatropists, Members of Staff and the Alumni of the University were heroes who worked assiduously to establish and nuture LAUTECH to the status it is found locally and globally today. LAUTECH was once ranked best Nigerian state University in 2003 and 2004 consecutively and ever since then it maintained the status quo of producing technologically skilled manpower into the labour market. In essence, this legacy laid down by honorable Nigerians and the glory of the institution, must be preserved while the dwindling academic excellence, caused by the inability of the goverments in-charge to adequately fund the University, must be revived before it is too late. The two proprietors must save the students academic career from being jeopardised as their ages will never cease for them toresume back on campus. January 31st Countdown, we are watching!!! Quite unfortunate that a protest ought to be engineered by the apex Nigerian students' body was led by another group to protect the interest of Nigerian students in Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) on 9th January, 2017. This peaceful protest by the students under the auspices of SERAL-C fetched the reassurance of the Governor of Oyo State on the reopening of the institution before January ends. He however revealed that both proprietors (Oyo and Osun) agreed to pump in atleast N250 million each to cater for the worker's outstanding earnings while a meeting had been scheduled for 11th January to deliberate and resolve with the concerned parties on the crisis, The Punch News Reported. The group, Save Education and Re-open LAUTECH Coalition (SERAL-C), during the protest in Ibadan, agitated for the immediate payment of all outstanding salaries and allowances of striking workers, no to hike in school fees, improved funding and democratic management of LAUTECH and restoration of LAUTECH Students’ Union, as reported by Tunde Ogunesan of the Nigerian Tribune News. SERAL-C further distanced itself and LAUTECH students from a meeting reportedly held with the Governor of Oyo State by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), as revealed by the group's spokesperson to the Punch News. This denotes the extent we can conclude that NANS never played a role in the protest and we want to believe that the Apex student body was established to protect the interest of Nigerian students in time of difficulties like the current one. The dichotomy in the leadership of NANS would be the major symptom that caused the inability of the body to front the protest. No doubt, the factions of NANS would have been working within their capabilities to consult the two visitors (Osun and Oyo Governors) of the university and resolve the matter but it's obvious they are not working in unison with LAUTECH students and its leaders which is worrisome. We however hope that the astounding intervention of SERAL-C, comprising the students, will be fruitful while all its demands most especially the sustainable payments of the workers owed stipends, rejection of hike in tuition fees and the reopening of the school before the end of January 2017, are expected to be fulfilled by the two state governments. The necessity to employ the power of 'pen' in writing and exploit the strength of Media in its dissemination appears to be one of the left options for parents, students and members of Staff of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) in order to awaken the Proprietors (Oyo State and State of Osun) of the institution from their 'slumbers' over the continued paralysis of academic and non-academic activities on their campuses for over seven (7) months. Perhaps some of the allies of the two Governors will be online and coincidentally reading this piece. The Governors are very much aware that the continued closure of the institution will do more harm than good and we are compelled to either believe they are dealing with the matter or it's beyond their capability. Nevertheless we need to relentlessly intimate them on the negative intensity of their "silence" on student's career. Delving into an open letter reportedly authored by Soun of Ogbomoso land, Oba (Dr.) Oladunni Oyewumi Ajagungbade III, who revealed that as events have unfolded so far, "LAUTECH’s joint ownership is a monumental aberration and the so-called 'model,' has utterly fallen apart." He further stated that "it is evident the two proprietors, Oyo and Osun States, are tired of co-funding because of lots of intricate difficulties." We may deduce that the intricate difficulties are resulting into the delay in working out an amicable resolution with the striking workers. Stalites and freshers are perturbed about the possibility of forfeiting a whole academic session if the crisis lingers for long. Admission seekers are perturbed about when a new session will kick start for fresh application. Final year students are perturbed about missing the mandatory National Youth Service Mobilizations for next batches. The members of Staff and Students are perturbed about the slide in the rank of the university among its contenders home and abroad. Parents are perturbed about the idleness and unstatic age of their offsprings as 7 months had been wasted. Residents of Oyo and Osun are perturbed about the harsh effect it will pose on the states' economies. Nigerians are also perturbed about the halt in producing technologically-skilled manpower for the nation and the world at large. In essence, the Industrial action in the institution affects everyone and it's worrisome to see the government "staring" at the crisis without proffering sustainable solution on time before it's too late. We hope to have LAUTECH reopened as soon as possible. ...Writes from: https://ibadanelite./2017/01/06/%e2%80%8blautech-7-month-closure-nigerians-are-perturbed/ |
As a concerned member of the Nairaland community and in respect to a sensitive and untrue information on Gambia President-elect, moved to the Front Page through the Politics section this week. I would like to bring to our notice the importance of utilizing the "Report" button under every post/thread on this forum to compell the Moderators (Mods) to remove unwanted posts with no reliable sources. Nairaland Rule No 13 speaks more about the button. I'm not posting this to get any form of recognition from Seun and his Mods as I was completely disappointed in the Mods in-charge on discovering the said thread made FP. Nevertheless Nairalanders must realise that ANTI-SOCIAL MEDIA FORCES in Nigeria only need the downfall or dichotomy of this Community to kickstart their ridiculous dream of clamping down the voice of the masses via internet. We must therefore make full use of the "report" button to inform the mods on irregularities in posts. We want to believe there is a sizable number of reports that can trigger the removal or closure of a thread (capable of becoming avenue for the Anti-social media agents to ridicule this educative, informative and interactive platform for voiceless Nigerians). God Bless Nairalanders and its Management. Cc: Seun, Lalasticlala |

"Youths are leaders of tomorrow", a statement initiated to psyche out Nigerian youths when in reality, the Nigeria's political atmosphere is yet to accomodate such assertion in all ramifications. To further corroborate the reasons which connote the words as cajoling expression, majority of the youths ought to have been financially independent and enjoying a sustainable standard of living as obtained in some other sovereign states but unfortunately the reverse is the case in the Nigerian state.

Between Nigerian Politicians and The Masses: One identical feature Nigerians cease to realise the lucid fact that in thought we are equivalent to the politicians we curse, praise and abuse on daily basis. There are however three fathomable differences projecting them to be more superior than the citizenry while one unfair attitude coexists in both parties which demands transformation at the grassroot level. Take it or leave it, President Buhari, former President Jonathan, Obasanjo and many other leaders were not born with "silver spoon" which means they were once among average or poor ones who complained and condemned the leaders of their time before being blessed with wealth, fame and power, which are the clear differences between politicians and the citizens. Many Nigerians have descended harshly on one or two of these politicians because of their attitudes and inability to save the masses from the mud of poverty. This is not an avenue to praise or condemn their personalities or actions but to make average Nigerians re-examine and cleanse their thoughts and deeds before they are bestowed with power, fame and wealth. You are a boss of your business, harvests your products at your backyard, sells it at an inflated price to your customers, gets excessive profit and eventually hide under the disguise of other inflated price of commodities affected by the naira depreciation against dollar. Can you escape rain of curses or condemnations when you are bestowed the power to manage a huge business or clusters of diverse set of human across Nigeria? Exploring the background of some of the leaders stated, Goodluck Jonathan originated from a poor family of canoe maker in Otueke of Ogbia Local Government, Bayelsa State. He was named “Goodluck” with the hope that he would change the fortunes of the family (Wikipedia, 2016). Olusegun Obasanjo "could not bear college expenses, in 1958 he joined the Nigerian Army and went to Aldershot, England, to attend a six month training of the ‘Service Commission’ held at the ‘Mons Officer Cadet School’.", TheFamousPeople revealed. He was brought up in Owu, Abeokuta, Ogun State. President Muhammad Buhari is the twenty-third child of his father. He was raised by his mother after the demise of his father at four (4) years old in Daura, Katsina State. In 1961, he enrolled in the Nigerian Military Training College (NMTC) now NDA, Nigeria Defence Academy after which he also underwent officer cadet training at Mons Officer Cadet School in Aldershot in England (Wikipedia, 2016). These are few facts to buttress the affirmation that Nigerian leaders were once among average and poor masses plunged into poverty to hustle for survival. The Self-centered attitude in politicians is an identical feature which corresponds with that of the masses. This lone-feature, often nutured from childhood, becomes a norm and habit when we mature to be leaders and it eventually drives us to care less for the survival of the masses being governed. The self-centered attitude meant here occurs when we become more concerned about harnessing wealth extravagantly to improve our standard of living at the expense of the people we serve and against their will. Therefore, it's onus on us to suppress the unprogressive attitude of self-centeredness right before we attain the realm of power or become a politician/leader. The Return of MMM and the fidelity of Nigerians Many have failed to examine what pushed Nigerians into participating in different ponzi schemes aside MMM but instead we dwell more into an assertion that "Nigerians are gullible". There is an adage which says "A person who has not been to a battle field will always tag himself among brave men". As the scheme "returns", we must reiterate the fact that few persons would have been involved if not for our low and unsustainable standard of living. You will discover that the scheme is touring the African continent while the reason behind this is not far fetched. MMM had been discouraged by the government through Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and other agencies or parastatals. Some religions also forbid such schemes and likewise the 'body language' of some online forums and media platforms had been against the pyramid scheme which is quite commendable, but has Nigeria's economic atmosphere been able to dissuade its citizenry from getting enticed with those schemes? Only those who have not encountered monetary challenges would have the statement "Nigerians are gullible" flow through their tongues without conditioning their affirmation. Some Nigerians are stucked in debt of house rent, children's tuition fees, shop rent, business capital and many other sardonic situations we find Nigerians in the recession the country is plunged into. No doubt, those with strong faith in what they worship and believe in hard work won't be swayed by the temptations of 30% or 50% acrrual involved in the ponzi scheme. Some hid under the believe that "life itself is a risk, therefore they can risk their spare money". The return of MMM after their accounts were frozen may be detrimental as fear and panic had been groomed in the mind of Nigerians involved in the scheme even though they neglected the warnings prior to the suspension of the scheme in December, 2016 till January 14, 2017. This panic is capable of turning many of its participants into "get-helpers" while those who will provide help will be scanty. Then who helps the helpers? Nigerian's fidelity in the return of the scheme can not be overestimated as the top guiders kept on persuading and giving hope to its participants. The Bitter pill we must swallow is that until our basic standard of living are catered for and sustainable, it will be laborious to curtail Nigerians from continuous participation in the scheme and subsequent ones. https://ibadanelite./2016/12/30/%e2%80%8bthe-return-of-mmm-and-the-fidelity-of-nigerians/ |

FUTA crisis: Assault on SUG officials by NPF and FUTA JAC, Barbaric The Students Union Government officials of the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) was yesterday, 21st December, 2016, reportedly assaulted by some men of the Nigerian Police within the institution's premises. This related act will be the third in recent times coming from the Nigerian Police Force against Nigerian students. Even though we are yet to ascertain the cause of the assault, we are astonished by the action meted out to the student union officials by members of a co-union on campus, which comprise of the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU), Non Academic Staff Union (NASU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), called Joint Action Congress (JAC) of Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA). This remains a "huge slap" on the students of the institution and Nigerian students atlarge. According to an eye witness, as revealed on the facebook timeline of an alumni and former President of FUTASUG --Salami Ismail El'sama, "JAC members (more than 150) held the FUTASUG officials (about 10) hostage. They knelt them down. They beat them. Then they incited the gullible policemen to harass, assault, arrest and whisk them away from the campus!" We call on necessary authorities to probe the cruel act as soon as possible to forestall future replication while the Nigerian Police Force are urged to be more professional when called to intercept student related matters. The two state Governors in-charge, resolved in the extract of the communique stated above to restructure the institution in order to achieve national, regional and global reckoning while till date the school is still on industrial action paralyzing all activities on its campuses. The Governors "cannot have the cake and still eat it", it is either they find a sustainable solution to the crisis befalling the school by funding the institution and its workforce as soon as possible to preserve its glory or jeopardize their vision to preserve and upgrade the university's reputation and academic excellence in reckoning, home and abroad as embedded in the joint ownership meeting resolution. Therefore, it will be in the best interest of Nigerians to resolve the cause of the industrial action with none of the two parties (Students and workers) being victimised or caused to suffer for the strike after its being called off or suspended. |
Berating Aregbesola, Ajimobi on LAUTECH: "You can't have your cake and eat it" By Fatola Abdullahi... We unequivocally condemn first, the actions of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) towards the protest embarked upon by the students of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) on 9th December, 2016. They were reportedly shooting at the students sporadically and tear-gasing them, Are Police really our friends like they portray themselves?. Prior to that, a duplicated scenerio was recorded during the last peaceful protest organized by students of the Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta (FUNAAB) when a student was shot in the eye as a result of either the carelessness or intentional act displayed by the security agent in question. We urge all security agencies to employ more civil means in containing subsequent student protests so far they are orchestrated with peace. The academic and non-academic activities on LAUTECH campuses had been on halt for over six months while students and the members of staff have been victims of the paralyzed activities. The industrial action began June 9, 2016 when the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) protested their outstanding salaries yet to be paid by the two state governments managing the institution. The students and workers of the university had been suffering from the inability of the Oyo state and State of Osun to release funds to cater for the workers' earnings. More importantly, student's academic career had been at stake leaving them confused on the next stage of life to mount with the bachelor's degree study still pending. The fear of any-time strike suspension or call off holds grip on many students from venturing into another stage of life and as the Nigerian labour market had been programmed, without Higher National Diploma (HND) certificate or Bachelor's Degree Certificate and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate you can't find a manageable job except for those with entrepreneural skills who have capital to fuel their self-reliant businesses. Furthermore, The Nations news conducted an interview, reported by Daniel Oladele and featuring students of LAUTECH, where a 300-Level student, who simply gave her name as Adeife, lamented about the strike, saying: “This strike has not helped anyone. I only wake up and do nothing all day in the last six months. There is nowhere to engage in temporary work, because of the economic situation in the country. One is in fact not productive. I can’t even remember anything I was taught. I see my mates in other schools moving to the next level and I am stuck at a level for more than a year.” Consecutively, in 2003, the institution was ranked best state university in Nigeria by the Nigerian University Commission (NUC) and it retained the position in 2004. Ever since then, the students of this prestigious institution had been representing the university home and abroad returning back in flying colours. Sequel to a resolution reached in a meeting to resolve the joint ownership crisis of the institution on Wednesday 19th October, 2016, a communique was drafted and agreed upon in the presence of Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo state and his Osun State counterpart, Governor Abdul-Rauf Aregbesola with their deputies and other government officials from each state . The communiqué thus read in part, as reported by Daily Post news on 20th October, 2016, that “The meeting also agreed on the necessity for a comprehensive restructuring of the institution to ensure fair and effective development and distribution of academic resources, physical structures and assets of the University across the two states in order to achieve national, regional and global reckoning. Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) had been recieving excellent global appraisal for a long time, not to mention national and regional reckoning, nevertheless they still yearn to improve the status quo and as well "to be a centre of academic excellence and a training ground for productive, self employable, self sustaining and self reliant individuals passing through it" as enshrined in the university's mission statement. As this pen is being laid down, we urge Nigerians home and abroad to rally round the students and staffs of the university even if it was not our alma mater. Many of us once experienced an indefinite strike during our school days which is enough to know how it feels to be sent home (half-baked) out of their will and waiting endlessly to accomplish the bachelor's degree when other colleagues whom they matriculated the same year in other institutions have graduated or are at least one year ahead of them. #ReOpenLAUTECH Source: https://ibadanelite./2016/12/20/%e2%80%8bberating-aregbesola-ajimobi-on-lautech-you-cant-have-your-cake-and-eat-it |

PRESIDENT BUHARI @74, THROWBACK TO THE 1985 COUP Ibrahim Babangida justified his coup d'état by saying that Buhari failed to deal with the country's economic problems and promised "to rejuvenate the economy ravaged by decades of government mismanagement and corruption". Buhari's admirers believe that he was overthrown by corrupt elements in his government who were afraid of being brought to justice as his policies were beginning to yield tangible dividends in terms of public discipline, curbing corruption, lowering inflation, enhancing workforce and improving productivity.."
