Politics / Arewa Group Condemns Call For Military Takeover In Nigeria By Retired Generals by nairalandankrah: 7:16pm On Sep 09, 2023
.Calls for sanitation of the judiciary

By Chimezie Godfrey

Organization for Community Civic Engagement of Nigeria (OCCEN) has condemned the action of a group of retired military generals threatening the elected government of president Tinubu with coup scare.

The Executive Director, OCCEN – Nigeria,
Abdulrazaq Alkali stressed this in a statement on Saturday.

Alkali noted that the ruling by the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT) led by 5-member team of justices from the appeal court and high courts upholding the electoral victory of the President Bola Ahmad Tinubu will go a long way in upholding the nation’s
democracy and strengthening the efforts and independence of the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC).

He however condemned the action of some supporters of the opposition who are blackmailing and threatening the Judges.

He particularly condemned moves by a crop of retired military generals who are calling for military takeover in Nigeria.

He said,”Apart from these treacherous plans against the judiciary, some of the actors from the opposition have (been) secretly promoting and calling for national protest, with the aim of creating instability and worsening the socio-economic conditions of Nigerians. They are hoping to exploit the difficult economic challenges bedevilling Nigeria to rile up citizens into violent protest against the elected government.

“It has also emerged that some of these actors are planning to use the crisis and instability to promote military intervention, motivated by the recent military coups that is sweeping some of our neighbouring countries. This can be seen from quite a number of their supporters who are recorded on social media calling for crisis and military takeover in Nigeria.

“It is disheartening to see that a group of retired military generals threatening the elected government of president Tinubu with coup scare by reference to happenings in other African countries.

“It is vitally important for us as citizens not to allow politicians and criminals to exploit our vulnerabilities and current economic difficulties to lead us into unimaginable crisis that will bring this country on it knees. At the end of the day, it is us the citizens that will bear the consequences of those crisis.”

Alkali pointed out that handling of the legal process and the verdict delivery displayed high level of legal sagacity, professionalism, and responsibility on the part of the tribunal judges despite the media and social media attacks lunch against their personalities and their families.

According to him, the constitution has clearly laid down procedures to follow in challenging election at tribunals up to supreme courts.

“The action of some supporters from the opposition parties in blackmailing and threatening our Judges should highly condemned by all well-meaning Nigerians. One would wonder whether these actors and their supporters are interested in having a just system that works for all or that they are only interested in access to power by hook or crook.

“It is unfortunate that these actors who have also failed to learn from their previous mistakes of using economic, ethnic and religious blackmail to ascend to power have now resorted to blackmailing our justice system.

“It is therefore critical for well-meaning Nigerians and lawyers to speak up and upheld the sanctity of our judiciary. We should be careful of the possible repercussions that will befall us as a nation if we allow such elements to rubbish and destroy the image and confidence of our judiciary through their dubiously crafted lies and blackmail,” he said.

He said politicians should understand in clear terms that the only option for them to seek redress is through the judicial system as laid down by our constitution.

He pointed out that the ruling delivered by the PEPT is not a final judicial judgement regarding presidential election, adding that the petitioners have a right to appeal the ruling at the Supreme Court.

“It is important for Nigerians to understand that the current economic situation should not be a reason to allow politicians exploit our anger. Every well-meaning Nigerian knows that difficult decisions and changes need to be implemented about the existing economic policies particularly regarding fuel subsidies and multiple foreign exchange rates.

“These schemes are bedevilled by corruption with only a few individuals enriching themselves from the nation’s wealth. It is crucial that Nigerians give the current government a chance and the needed time to implement the palliative programs and salary adjustments necessary to cushion the economic difficulties we are facing.

“Also, the plans by the government to direct savings from these inefficient schemes into developmental project should be highly welcome development, even if Nigerians don’t see the benefit in the short term, the medium- and long-term economic benefits will be enormous.

“This is not in any way discouraging Nigerians from speaking up, Nigerians have every right to engage in constructive criticism of government decisions and processes, but for Nigerians to be careful with treacherous and selfish politicians who are power hungry and are willing to go to any extent just to gain power,” Alkali stressed.

Foreign Affairs / Niger Rulers Accuse France Of Freeing ‘Terrorists’, Air Space Breach by nairalandankrah: 3:12am On Aug 10, 2023
Niger’s new military rulers on Wednesday accused France, the country’s traditional ally, of having “unilaterally freed captured terrorists,” a term used for jihadists, and of breaching a ban on the country’s air space.

They claimed that France released a number of jihadists, who then gathered to plan an attack on “military positions in the tri-border area,” a hotspot region where the frontiers of Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali converge.

“Events of an extreme gravity are unfolding in Niger as a result of the behaviour of the French forces and their accomplices,” according to the statement issued by the new regime, called the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP).

The statement reported that a unit of the armed forces had come under attack on Wednesday, although it did not directly link this with France’s alleged release of the jihadists.

A position held by the National Guard in a locality called Bourkou Bourkou, 30 kilometres (18 miles) from a gold mine at Samira in western Niger, came under attack at 6:30 am (0530 GMT), it said.

“At present, the toll is not yet known.”

The statement called on the security forces to “raise their alert level across the country” and on the public “to remain mobilised and vigilant.”

The regime also accused France of having allowed a “military plane” to take off Wednesday from neighbouring Chad, which then crossed into Niger, defying a ban imposed on Sunday.

The aircraft “deliberately cut off all contact with air traffic control on entering our air space,” from 6:39-11:15 am (0539-1015 GMT), it said in a statement read on national TV.

France has around 1,500 troops in Niger, supporting the country in its fight against jihadists who swept in from Mali in 2015.

But relations broke down after French ally President Mohamed Bazoum was toppled by members of his guard on July 26.

The regime’s accusations come on the eve of a summit by the West African regional bloc ECOWAS on how to tackle the Niger crisis.

ECOWAS — the Economic Community of West African States — had given the coup leaders until Sunday to reinstate Bazoum or face the risk of military intervention.

Politics / Yoruba Nation Agitator, Igboho, Set To Return To Nigeria, Lawyer Reveals by nairalandankrah: 11:01am On Jul 16, 2023
Yoruba nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, is set to return to the country, his lawyer, Mr. Pelumi Olajengbesi, has revealed.

Igboho escaped from the country in 2021 after operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS, raided his residence in Ibadan, killing several persons

The DSS, through its spokesman, Dr. Peter Afunanya, said it carried out the raid after intelligence reports revealed that Igboho allegedly stockpiled weapons in his house.

It, thereafter, launched a manhunt for Igboho who was subsequently arrested in neighbouring Cotonou, Benin Republic, while trying to travel to Germany.

However, addressing newsmen in Abuja on Friday, Olajengbesi, said the embattled Yoruba nation activist, who had since regained his freedom, would soon return to the country.

“Igboho is doing very well and he will soon be in Nigeria in a very ceremonial way. The arrangements are on,” Olajengbesi told newsmen.

He, however, lamented his inability to enforce a judgement that was delivered in favour of his client, a situation he said was made difficult by the fact that the consent of the Attorney-General of the Federation must first be secured before security agencies could pay judgement debts.

While calling for a review of that provision of the law, Olajengbesi, urged the Federal Government under President Bola Tinubu to have a rethink about people he described as “freedom fighters.”

The lawyer maintained that people like Igboho, the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, as well as the embattled convener of the RevolutionNow protest, Mr. Omoyele Sowore, deserved to be listened to by the government.

He commended President Tinubu “for his purposeful leadership drive, restructuring of the governmental policies and operational systems since assuming the office,” adding that he has “rekindled the hope of average Nigerians that government can serve the common good of the people.”

“We therefore encourage Mr. President to continue in this direction with equity and justice as his working value system. We equally want to commend the acting Inspector General of Police; Olukayode Egbetokun for unusual reforms in the Nigeria Police Force and his commitment to holding errant officers accountable for abuse of official duties and violation of human rights. He is bringing a new value system to the Nigeria police system and this new drive must be sustained.

“We must also commend INEC for filing charges against its suspended Resident Electoral Commissioner, Hudu Yunusa Ari in Adamawa State. This is a step in the right direction and it is commendable.”

Politics / Simon Ekpa Not Responsible For Insecurity In South East. DAILY POST by nairalandankrah: 6:01am On Jul 11, 2023
Setting the record straight: Simon Ekpa is not responsible for insecurity in Southeast
Published

on July 9, 2023

In a recent article published by Vanguard newspaper on June 8th, 2023, a misleading narrative was presented, accusing Mazi Simon Ekpa, the PM of Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE), of being responsible for insecurity in the southeastern part of Nigeria. As responsible citizens, it is essential to examine such assertions and separate fact from fiction critically.

The southeastern region of Nigeria has witnessed several bouts of unrest and conflict in recent years, with calls for the restoration of Biafra gaining traction among some segments of the population. Additionally, the rendition and illegal detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in the DSS dungeon without due process have contributed to the volatile situation. However, a concerning narrative has emerged suggesting that the Nigerian government is actively involved in inciting violence and using state and non-state actors to create mayhem in the region. This article aims to explore these allegations and shed light on the situation.

Various reports have indicated the possible involvement of state actors in instigating violence in the southeast region. It is alleged that the government may be using its security forces to carry out attacks on market women during the sit-at-home protests, which have been predominantly organized by the secessionist group led by the capable PM Simon Ekpa. This alleged strategy aims to intimidate and quell the growing demand for Biafra’s Freedom.

These state actors, including law enforcement agencies and government-sponsored vigilante groups like EbubeAgu, are accused of deploying excessive force and engaging in arbitrary arrests, extrajudicial killings, and the harassment of innocent civilians.

The insecurity in the eastern region of Nigeria cannot be attributed to the actions of one individual. Insecurity is a multifaceted issue that stems from various deep-rooted causes such as poverty, unemployment, historical grievances, political instability, and a lack of effective governance and security measures.

Simon Ekpa, an Ambassador for peace and a well-known advocate for Biafra’s independence, has been committed to peacefully promoting the interests and rights of the Biafran people and fighting for the freedom of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who is being held by the Nigerian government against every known law. His endeavours have primarily centred on political and social activism, using platforms like social media and public speaking engagements to express his views and aspirations for Biafra.

It is vital to understand that Simon Ekpa’s advocacy for Biafra does not equate to promoting or instigating violence or insecurity in any region. His determination to raise awareness and push for political dialogue cannot be conflated with the unfortunate incidents of criminal activities plaguing the southeastern part of Nigeria.

Attributing the insecurity in southeast Nigeria solely to Simon Ekpa is an oversimplification that obscures the underlying complexities of the issue. To address and resolve the security challenges, it is crucial to delve into the core factors contributing to the problem, such as:

1. Cultural and multifaceted diversity: Our lifestyles are quite different and need to be renegotiated.

2. The rendition and continuous detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu upon discharge from the second highest court of the land is outright lawlessness.

3. The imposition of leaders that serve the interests of the Fulani controlling government is undemocratic and wicked.

4. Political instability: The region has experienced a lack of effective and accountable governance, which has created fertile ground for criminal elements to exploit.

5. Socio-economic factors: High poverty rates, unemployment, and inadequate social infrastructure have fueled discontent among the youth, making them susceptible to criminal activities.

6. Historical grievances: Lingering resentment from the Civil War and perceived marginalization of the Biafran people have contributed to deep-seated frustration, which can manifest in expressions of dissent.

7. Nigeria military and other security agencies collude with terrorists to massacre Biafrans.

Rather than scapegoating an individual like Simon Ekpa, it is imperative to focus on addressing the root causes of insecurity in the southeastern part of Nigeria. Adopting the following strategies can help promote lasting peace and security:

•Let Mazi Nnamdi Kanu be set free as a competent court of jurisdiction has ruled in his favour.

•Engage in dialogue to address other issues and promote peaceful resolution.

•Conduct a referendum for the Biafra people and for any other ethnic Nationalities that are no longer wanted in the evil Nigeria set up.

It is important to critically analyze the narratives presented by the media, such as the Vanguard newspaper article of June 8th, 2023, to avoid creating simplistic scapegoats. Insecurity in the southeastern part of Nigeria requires a comprehensive and multidimensional response that addresses the root causes rather than unfairly blaming individuals like PM Simon Ekpa of BRGIE. It is time to engage in productive dialogue to foster the region’s peace, justice, and deep-rooted transformation.

The Nigerian government is employing state and non-state actors to generate chaos in the southeastern region of the country, and Biafra has activated self-defence through Biafra Liberation Army and Eastern Security Network to engage only these actors in self-defence.

The government’s actions are purportedly aimed at undermining the Biafra Restoration Movement, a longstanding campaign seeking to reestablish an independent Biafra nation. Market women, in particular, are targeted by the Nigeria-sponsored state and non-state actors during the sit-at-home protests organized by Simon, a vocal figurehead of the movement.

One of the main allegations revolves around the Nigerian government engaging state and non-state actors to create mayhem in the southeast, specifically directed towards market women. These women are crucial players in regional trade and commerce, often serving as the backbone of the local economy. By targeting them during sit-at-home protests, the government allegedly seeks to coerce Simon and his Biafra Restoration Movement into abandoning their quest for independence.

The orchestrated attacks during the sit-at-home protests also create an environment of fear and uncertainty. By utilizing state and non-state actors, like Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, Asari Dokubo, and some misguided DOS members, the government might hope to derail the popular support behind the Biafra Restoration Movement, painting it as a cause that fosters chaos and insecurity.

VanguardNews has reported thus “Despite the fact that the mainstream IPOB had since declared Ekpa, an Ebonyi State indigene who is based in Finland and his group as fake, he has continued to operate a network that appears to be too strong for Kanu’s IPOB to destroy.”

The above statement by Vanguardnews is a confirmation that the Nigeria government has hired the defunct DOS of IPOB who is now acting as one of the state actors to be part of this mayhem in Biafra land.

The demand for the restoration of Biafra arises from deeply ingrained feelings of marginalization, discrimination, and perceived injustices experienced by the region’s citizens. Historically, these grievances have fueled separatist movements in the eastern region. The desire to reclaim a sense of identity, cultural heritage, and political autonomy has remained central to these aspirations.

The allegations of the Nigerian government employing state and non-state actors to create mayhem in the southeast and specifically target market women during sit-at-home protests are grave and require thorough investigation. The Biafra Restoration Movement’s quest for independence is a reflection of longstanding grievances within the region. However, any actions taken by the government must prioritize dialogue and peaceful resolution rather than resorting to tactics that perpetuate chaos and insecurity. Only through releasing Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and engaging in open dialogue can the path to resolving grievances and bridging divides be found.
