“NO SANE YORUBA BLOOD WILL VOTE FOR JONATHAN” – A PRESS STATEMENT ISSUED by COUNCIL OF YOUNG YORUBA PEOPLE (CYYP) WORLDWIDE.
The Council of Young Yoruba People (CYYP) the umbrella body of the next generation of Yoruba leaders both home and abroad hereby condemn in totality, the shameful endorsement of President Jonathan for a second term in office by some elements called Yoruba elders.
The power to endorse anybody for a term in office rests solely on the millions of Yoruba people who have suffered untold hardship under this administration in the last six years. So many unclean waters have passed under the bridge for some people to merely gather themselves together, collect money and begin to talk on behalf of souls they never cared for nor even paid attention to over the years.
It is shocking and shameful that people like Yinka Odumakin, Mimiko, Fayose and the likes are now the Yoruba elders talking for Yoruba people. Yinka Odumakin collected N12m for being at the National Conference, his wife Joe Odumakin also collected N12m for the same jamboree, N24m in the same family for a three months job as we can see, the job is not over for them yet. Mimiko’s cousin was made the Chief of Staff to the President with a promise to make his brother, the INEC chairman when Jega is brutally removed. Fayose shamelessly worked with President Jonathan, using the military and his thugs to rig the Ekiti election, a favour he must return at all cost. How can these characters be the face of Yoruba race? God forbid. They are all just paying back their debts to the settlement master.
Politically, how can any true Yoruba blood even think of voting for Jonathan? In the last five years, no Yoruba man has been among the first ten in Nigeria. If the South South people are supporting Jonathan, they have number one at stake, if the Hausas are supporting Jonathan, their attention is on number two, if the Ibos are supporting Jonathan, they have Secretary to the Federal Government in their grips already, what is the stake of the Yorubas in this contraption? How can we trade away number two position for no recognition at all? It just doesn’t make sense. So they(leaving out none of them) will collect Jonathan’s money and still work against him, check the antecedents of the endorsement merchants.
Nationally, in the last six years, Nigerians have been seriously dealt with by the callous administration of Jonathan and is still difficult to forget. Beginning from the brutal removal of fuel subsidy in 2012 against all pleas and reasoning, until protesters began to die, Jonathan did not reduce the price. Stella Oduah stole billions of Naira that could give our children solid education, health care and jobs, none of these so called Yoruba elders raised a dust. Allison Madueke is spending N10b on flight chatter every year, Abba Moro invited our children to job interview having collected billions of Naira from them, he ended up killing some of them, the Yoruba elders could not even call for his resignation neither did they commiserate with the families of the victims. Many Yoruba entrepreneurs have lost their businesses due to the high level of corruption in the power sector. Today, Nigerian Naira exchanges for N220 to an American Dollar. Many of the Yoruba people living up North have lost their lives, their means of livelihood, their family members with no Yoruba elder to bear their pains with them. Industrial strikes like never before has been one of the logos of this administration, as we speak, the Health Workers have been on strike for close to one year with ASUP threatening another one, yet the president has enough money to throw around for endorsements. Many Yoruba pensioners have been sent to their early graves because of unchecked corruption in the system. Yoruba indigenes living in FCT have their houses demolished with their properties by Bala Mohammed, the FCT Minister and gave out the land to his friends and family members, no Yoruba elders could fight for the hapless people, they keep groaning under a bad system. There were many young Yorubas among the soldiers charged for mutiny just because they demanded for right ammunition to prosecute the senseless war we sent them to, no Yoruba elder is standing up for these poor children. The Yoruba elders saw the madness that characterized the Ekiti and Osun elections, they listened to the tape and the interview of the whistle-blower, yet they are not bothered. Seven house members out of 26 passed Ekiti’s budget and are currently legislating for the state, the songs of sorrow in the land grow by the day while the Yoruba elders are busy dancing unclad in the market square. What are these elders made of?
Using the National Conference Report as an alibi for the endorsement is about the dumbest thing anyone can hang on to. A Conference that could not address the mode of our cohabitation, the sharing formula of our resources and the control of same is a mere jamboree and political settlement. The report as shallow as it is, can never be implementable because it lacks legal backing from the onset, so no one should hide behind that to cajole the Yoruba race.
In conclusion, the Council of Young Yoruba People enjoins all well-meaning Yoruba sons and daughters all over the world to disregard the shameful endorsement of President Jonathan by the so called Yoruba Elders. They are self-serving and are only fighting for their pockets and positions for their own family members. Nigeria as it is today needs a radical change, with what we have witnessed in the last six years, Jonathan cannot be the change we long for.
We equally use this opportunity to call on all Yoruba indigenes who registered but have not collected their Permanent Voter Cards to please do everything possible to collect the card ahead of the general elections in March 28 and April 11 2015, for therein lies your power to say NO to wicked leaders, while we await their next sinister moves.
