Celebrities / Marriage is not an achievement - Uriel Oputa by NairaMedia: 4:45am On Aug 04, 2019
Former Big Brother Nigeria housemate, Uriel Oputa, while chatting with PUNCH, says that marriage is not an accomplishment.

She said, “I feel that one’s personal life should be kept private. Your life should be personalised to you, and not anybody else. Because someone got married at 19 or 25 doesn’t mean you must get married at that age. We all have different times. Nigerian men and family members should stop pressurising women into getting married. The divorce rate in the country is very high at the moment. People are rushing out of marriages the same way they rush in. I have a friend who got married and has two kids, but she’s now divorced. And she has to take care of her children. These days, people just get married for the wrong reasons. I would rather stay single than end up marrying the wrong person. Marriage is not an achievement. I did not go to school just to get married.”

Uriel also said: she wouldn’t even invite friends for the big day! She said, “We need to celebrate the little things. When people get married, it’s so elaborate and colourful with the best food, music, clothing and other things. When I do get married, I’m going to have the smallest wedding ever. I wouldn’t even invite my friends. It is just going to be, my husband and my immediate family (my brothers and my mum).”

Culture / As queen, I can only marry a woman – Delta female monarch by NairaMedia: 12:34am On Jul 27, 2019
The Omu of Anioma, Martha Dunkwu, is a revered traditional ruler of Anioma land, which covers nine local government areas in Delta State. Anioma people are the Igbo located in Delta, who are separated from the Igbo in the South-East by the River Niger. While chatting with PUNCH, say as a Queen, she can only marry a woman.

When she was asked "As a queen, how do you feel not having a husband and children?"

She said:

"Once you are pronounced as Omu, and you had married, you must leave your marital home and return to your father’s house. You are now a man. A palace will be built for you in your father’s place. You stop contacting your husband but that is not to say he cannot come and say hello; however, he cannot stay with you for hours. He cannot come and sleep with you so you have no responsibility to the man whatsoever. If you had children before you became Omu, the children would still be yours. And if you had one child before you became Omu and now wish to have more children, you can marry a woman, who will give you more children. This is because you cannot live with a man again. And in such a situation, the child you previously had and the one the woman had will have the same rights. That is, your two sets of children will have the same rights – the child or children you had before you became Omu and those you had in the institute. But for me, I have one son and I never married. I used to say that marriage is by choice but for the past couple of years, I have seen it as providential. I have one son who is married with a son now and is a lecturer in the university. I am man and woman put together. I’m not under a man, rather a different spiritual person. During my coronation, male rights were bestowed on me."

Foreign Affairs / Beji Caid Essebsi Is Dead! Tunisian President Dies Aged 92 by NairaMedia: 11:35am On Jul 25, 2019
Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi, the North African country’s first democratically elected leader, died Thursday at the age of 92, his office said.

The veteran politician, the oldest head of state after Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II, came to power in 2014, three years after the Arab Spring uprising toppled longtime despot Zine El Abidine Ben Ali and sparked revolts in several Arab nations.

He had been hospitalised with a severe illness in late June and was returned to intensive care on Thursday.

Celebrities / Mercy Aigbe is back in my house - Lanre Gentry by NairaMedia: 4:40am On Jul 21, 2019
The estranged husband of popular actress, Mercy Aigbe, Lanre Gentry, claims that she has returned to his house.

In an exclusive chat with PUNCH, Gentry stated that all the issues between him and his wife had been sorted out. Recall that the couple fell out in 2017 after Mercy alleged that Gentry usually assaulted and battered her. She moved out of his house and the Lagos State Department of Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team got involved in the case.

He said: “We are not in court and we don’t have any issues (again). She is my wife and the court case is over. She is back to my house.”

However, a close associate of Aigbe laughed off Gentry’s claims, saying he was just seeking attention. According to close source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, when she passed PHUNCH enquiries to Mercy to find out if she had indeed returned to her estranged husband’s house, the actress said, ‘What is wrong with Baba Juwon? And why are people still calling him to ask unnecessary questions? He just wants publicity. I stay in my own house.”

Education / Many corrupt Nigerian leaders started with exam fraud - JAMB by NairaMedia: 5:05am On Jul 15, 2019
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has said it is determined to sanitise the examination sub-sector in Nigeria, noting that many corrupt leaders started with examination malpractices.

JAMB stated this in its weekly bulletin obtained.

The board said, “Corruption is not a peculiar African or Nigerian problem. Regrettably, most of the measures deployed to fight corruption, more often than not, fail to yield desired results. If the malaise of corruption is not holistically addressed at the stage of examination malpractice, which is most times sponsored by parents, it will grow to become a monster.

“Many corrupt leaders today might have started off on this path through experimenting with examination malpractices. It is a fallacy to think that such individuals would outgrow such acts. This set of individuals mature to something more destructive and demeaning in the long run. The polluting effects of corruption warrant the adoption of a holistic approach in fighting corruption right from the school level.

“JAMB is leading the onslaught against perpetrators of examination infractions. It is the responsibility of citizens and other government agencies to sign up for this critical national assignment. Unfortunately, national challenges are sometimes perceived by Nigerians as the exclusive headache of the agency.”

Celebrities / Rapping in Yoruba doesn’t mean I’m local - Mz Kiss by NairaMedia: 5:32am On Jul 07, 2019
Female rapper, Omowunmi Akindele, popularly known as Mz Kiss, says that though she raps in Yoruba language, she is not local. While speaking with Sunday Scoop, she said:

"Some people are yet to understand that rapping in a particular dialect or language does not mean the rapper is restricted to a particular area. That I rap in Yoruba doesn’t mean I’m ‘local’. Hip hop is a culture that is recognised all over the world. As long as the sound is good, it has no boundaries. Rap music is a global ‘vibe’, not restricted to a particular language. Now that the sound is cutting across globally, I’m fine with whatever name people chose to describe it as."

South Africa knocked hosts Egypt out of the Africa Cup of Nations and booked their place in the quarter-finals with a late winner in Cairo.

With Egypt committing players forward in the final stages, South Africa hit on the counter-attack as Thembinkosi Lorch calmly slotted into the corner.

The hosts' best chance fell to Mahmoud Trezeguet, but he could only fire his shot straight at Ronwen Williams.

South Africa will return to the capital to play Nigeria in the last eight.
