[s][quote author=barcanista post=33417723]On the 26th of April, AIT Crew went to cover the meeting between the Cuban Ambassador and Alhaji Muhammadu Buhari. On arriving the Defence House (Abuja), the Buhari security team stopped AIT from accessing the premises. According to the security team, there is an order barring AIT from covering Buhari'es Event. The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said that all accredited media organizations in the country, including the African Independent Television (AIT), are free to cover the activities of the President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said the incoming Buhari Administration will not discriminate against any media organization, irrespective of its role during the electioneering campaign leading up to the recent polls.
It however enjoined all media organizations to observe the highest level of professional standards in carrying out their duties.
”There is a Code of Ethics guiding the practice of journalism in Nigeria, and this demands every journalist to ensure a strict adherence to the highest levels of ethics and professionalism in carrying out their duties.
”There must be repercussions, within the realms of the law, for media organizations which have wantonly breached the Code of Ethics of the journalism profession and turned themselves to partisans instead of professionals. But such repercussions will not include barring any accredited media organization from covering the activities of the President-elect,” APC said.

Politics › Re: Buhari's Restriction On AIT: Undemocratic, Unpresidential And Unacceptable by najoke: 1:56pm On Apr 28, 2015 |
[s] barcanista: My heart was filled with grief after reading the Vanguard Report titled "Hate campaign: Buhari fights back, bars AIT from covering his activities - http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/04/hate-campaign-buhari-fights-back-bars-ait-from-covering-his-activities/.
The question that stroke through my mind was "Can this be be justified in any sane democracy?".
It appears like Muhammadu Buhari is yet to come to terms with the present day democratic dispensation that he is bound to lead for the next for years or he is just acting naive. Perhaps the Daura-born General wants to bring back Decree 4 through the back door or he is out to fight any media organisation that he considers to be his adversary. Whatever be the case, Nigerians will not allow anyone to tamper with the freedom of media as provided by the 1999 Constitution.
President-elect Muhammadu Buhari need to be reminded that Sections 22 and 39 (1)(2) (quoted below) specifically made provision for Press Freedom.
Press Freedom In Nigeria's Constitution Section 22 of the Nigerian 1999 constitution states that: “the press, radio, television and other agencies of mass media shall at all times be free to uphold the fundamental objectives contained in this chapter and uphold the responsibility and accountability of the government to the people.”
Section 39(1) States that "Every person shall be entitled to freedom of expression, including freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart ideas and information without interference. Section 39(2) further went on to say "Without prejudice to the generality of subsection(1) of this section, every person shall be entitled to own, establish and operate any medium for the dissemination of information, ideas and opinion."
Buhari Should Remember His Words on Press Freedom At his interactive session with members of Newspapers Proprietors of Nigeria (NPAN) and Nigeria Guild of Editors (NGE) on March 17, 2015, he pledged to uphold Press Freedom and to be a friend of the Press. In his own words...
“Concerning the Decree 4 of 1984, I have to assure you that the time for that is over. That was part of military administration and dictatorship, but I have also promised you that I am now a converted, and converted democrat. Therefore, I want to assure you that I am going to be a friend of the media and this time, I will work well with you as friends and partners in the development of the nation, and that is my promise to you.”
“I want to give you my full assurances that in this democratic dispensation, I will ensure that the Nigerian Constitution is upheld. This includes respect for the media, respect for the right to free expression and freedom of speech. I have said elsewhere that I cannot change the past. But I can change the present and the future. Dictatorship goes with military rule as do edicts such as Decree 4"
"...I will continue to promote the consolidation of democracy in our great country, Nigeria, by guaranteeing that the media’s freedom is not compromised in any way. I give you my full assurances that the Nigerian media will be free under our APC government.”. http://sunnewsonline.com/new/?p=109636
The Unfortunate AIT Restriction It is a unfortunate that President-elect Muhammadu Buhari that claimed to be a "reformed democrat" throughout the electioneering period will take the ignoble decision of preventing AIT from covering his activities even before taking oath of office. It is also unfortunate that the man that pledged to be a friend of the media will issue restricting order on a law abiding corporate citizen and a legally recognise media house. Buhari is expected to treat all members of the Media in the most appropriate manner. He should remember that the rights of the media as enshrined in the Constitution is not subject to change via Presidential desire. If he hasn't been told, he should be aware that his restriction on AIT is undemocratic and can never be tolerated in any sane democracy. If the President-elect has anything against AIT, he should seek redress in court. He may not like AIT as a media outfit but he should allow them conduct their duties unfettered as long as they operate within the ambit of the law.
Finally, let me remind President-elect Muhammadu Buhari that Nigerians are looking up to him to fulfil his numerous electoral promises. We will not tolerate any form of impunity or "executive rascality" whether from him(as President) or from any officer of his incoming government.

Politics › Re: Buhari Social Program PART II: Feasible or Laughable? by najoke: 3:44pm On Apr 20, 2015 |
[s] barcanista: PLEASE TAKE TIME TO READ
This thread is in response to the Thread by Obiagelli's https://www.nairaland.com/2265908/buharis-social-program-very-possible. In her bid to defend the Social policy of Mr Buhari, Obiagelli insulted the intelligence of Nigerians with respect to what is accrued to the Federal Government in revenue per fiscal year. Let us start by putting things in order...
Nigeria's Revenue: Nigeria's revenue is accrued through oil export, non oil export, oil tax and non oil tax. The Federal Inland Revenue Service is statutory responsible for the collection of both oil profit tax and non oil tax. The money for oil export goes directly to the Federation Account via the NNPC. The money generated via non oil export goes directly to the federation account through relevant Agencies.
Oil Revenue: The total sum realised through Oil export(after operational cost) and oil profit tax is known as "Oil Revenue"
Non Oil Revenue While the sum realised through export of other commodities(after operational cost) and the money realised from non oil profit tax is called "Non Oil Revenue".
What Did Nigeria Earn Between January 2014 and January 2015? Nigeria Total Earning: Jan 2014 - June 2014 = N5.109trn
June 2014 - Jan 2015= N3.676trn
Total: N8.785trn
Total Oil Revenue (Oil Export Earning + Oil taxes) = 70% of Total Revenue ie N6.15trn
*Total Non Oil Revenue (Non Oil Export + Non oil taxes) = 30% of N8.785trn ie N2.635 trn
Jan 2014- June 2014 = N1.08trn* July 2014 - Jan 2015= N1.556trn [N2.635trn]
Understanding FIRS 2014 Report: FIRS announced that the sum of N4.69trn was generated in 2014. The report indicated that N2.45 trillion, representing 52.96 per cent, was collected from petroleum profit tax while N2.24 trillion, representing 47.04 per cent, was collected from non-oil taxes during the period. Analysis This sum(N4.69trn) is not independent of the published N8.785trn that Nigeria was said to earn between Jan 2014 and January 2014. It is a part and parcel of the total revenue.
How Much Did FG Get In 2014? There is a consolidated Sharing formula between FG, States, LGs and Oil Producin States(13%) after operational and other associated cost has been deducted. FG Earnings In 2014 1st Qtr: N912 billion 2nd Qtr: N864.2 billion 3rd Qtr: N924.68 billon 4th Qtr: N617.186 billion Total 2014= N3.318trn
2014 Budget: N4.6trn FG Projected Earning for 2014= N3.73tr Real Earning = N3.318trn Deficit in 2014 Fiscal Year: N1.282trn
What this means is that the money accrued to the FG was not even enough to fund 2014 budget. We had a deficit of N1.282trn. Also note that the fall in oil price affected our earning.
Looking At 2015 Budget: The 2015 budget(as adjusted) stand at N4.3trn. Projected Revenue For 2015= N3.603trn Deficit: N1.297trn (N4.3trn - N3.603trn)
This means the 2015 budget will be run on deficit of N1.297trn (as confirmed by the Senate).
Looking At Buhari's Proposal With Buhari's proposed N1.89tr Social program, it invariably means an additional N1.89trn will be added to the projected deficit of N1.29 trn ie N3.187trn if he is to go ahead with paying of N5000 to 25 million unemployed annually, from where will he be able to make up the HUGE deficit?.
Analysing The Argument of The Pro-Buharis Some Pro-Buharis claim that the project will be done in phase of 5m people per year. However, the problem of "How to identify these 5m beneficiaries" and what will be the for selection? Anyway, that is for another day. Let's go by their argument... Unemployment benefit: 5m * N5000 = N300 billion.
*The N300b is for the payment benefit alone*. Add that to logistics, overhead and operational cost that the program will incur (approx 50% ie N150billion) annually.
Total: N300b + N150b = N450b
Feeding for 40m Public School Children = N373 billion.
Subtotal: N823 billion.
Where Will Buhari Source For the estimated N823 billion?
- Remove Subsidy? Total package for petrol and kerosene subsidies plus SURE-P fund = N166.5b. That is clearly not up to 30%.
- Invest All Capital Expenditure + Subsidy? This will be a very silly move though. But adding Capital Expenditure and Subsidy will total N866.9 billion. Just a little above the projected N823billion. Going this route means there will be no project for road, no infrastructure and other capital projects. In fact, it is synonymous to eating the present away.
- Will He Borrow? Borrowing to fund Social Welfare program is synonymous to eating away the future. That means indebting our future and a panacea to economic collapse likened to what happened to Greece if not worse. It also means increasing our already projected deficit of N1.29 trillion
What is the fate of this Social program? Feasible, Laudable or Laughable? [/s] I am going to bookmark this page just as we bookmarked what you said about GMB before the election. This time, nobody...I mean nobody will spare your arrogant a$$. |
