Former President Goodluck Jonathan this morning narrowly escapes death by some men suspected to be assailants.

The news according to an online medium www.darelasisi.co.uk as it that the men intercepted and drove into a short motorcade conveying the former President from the Julius Berger bridge area of the State capital Yenagoa, trailed the chased the motorcade to the entrance of the Yenagoa private residence of the former President in the Kpansia area of the town, before they were overpowered and arrested by a combined team of security men attached to the former President.

Members of the arrested gang are now being taken to the headquarters of the Bayelsa State Police Command where they're to be handed over to the police authorities for more investigation.

A notorious ‘godfather’ who sold machines guns to criminals in Birmingham, United Kingdom while at the heart of a gang which gunned down two innocent girls in a botched attack has been jailed for 16 years, reports the Daily Mail of UK.

Nosakhere Stephenson, 41, masterminded an operation to sell antique firearms and specially-made bullets to criminals around the West Midlands city.

Police say the gun dealer, known as ‘Nosa’, believed he was ‘untouchable’ as he ran the operation alongside fellow gang members from inside the infamous Burger Bar Boys gang.

The gang – which for years fought a bloody and protracted feud with the rival Johnson Crew – trafficked weapons including a MAC 10 machine gun, a brutal weapon which was used in one of Birmingham’s most notorious murders.

Letisha Shakespeare and Charlene Ellis were innocent victims caught in the crossfire of the two warring gangs, whose turf war blighted the Aston area of Birmingham for over a decade and cost dozens of lives.

Their murders, which took place in 2003, propelled Birmingham’s gun crime problem into the national headlines and kick-started campaigns by residents who had grown tired of the daily acts of violence.

Eighteen men have now been convicted for a series of offences relating to the criminal firearms operation which Stephenson ran.



As he was jailed for 16 years, Detective Constable, Phil Rodgers, said the police operation – and subsequent haul of dozens of weapons and ammunition – had undoubtedly prevented more murders in the city.

He said: “We will never know how long this supply chain has been active nor how many guns have passed through it and remain in criminal circulation. But the MAC 10 is an indiscriminate weapon – once fired, it will spray and kill anyone.

“Birmingham has seen the tragedy such weapons can cause and still bears the sadness. I am sure we have prevented murders.”

The court heard how the gang had thousands of rounds of ammunition specially made to be used with guns and revolvers, which they sold for about £3,000 each.

Although Stephenson was never caught in possession of the guns, phone records linked him to each deal and every other person in the conspiracy – including his right-hand man, Sundish Nazran, who was jailed for 13 years.

Judge Burbidge, sitting at Birmingham Crown court, said Stephenson was the ‘go to man’ and ‘the directing mind’ of the organised crime group when it came to obtaining firearms.

Jailing him, Judge James Burbidge said: “You were the go-to man and directing mind of this organised crime group if firearms were required. You had significant influence over others and able to command respect and allegiance.


“You must know about the devastation caused to other families in your community when weapons have been used.The fact you must know that, yet still ply this trade, is beyond belief.

I have tried delaying the writing of this piece in the honest expectation that someone probably misquoted Chief E.K. Clark, when he reportedly publicly disowned former President Goodluck Jonathan. I had hoped that our dear father, E.K. Clark, would issue a counter statement and say the usual things politicians say: “they quoted me out of context!” “Jonathan is my son”. That has not happened; rather, some other Ijaw voices, including one Joseph Evah, have come to the defence of the old man, to join hands in rubbishing a man they once defended to the hilt and used as a bargaining chip for the Ijaw interest in the larger Nigerian geo-politics.



If President Jonathan had returned to power on May 29, 2015, these same persons would have remained in the corridors of power, displaying all forms of ethnic triumphalism. It is the reason in case they do not realize it, why the existent power blocs that consider themselves most fit to rule, continue to believe that those whose ancestors never ran empires can never be trusted with power, hence they can only be admitted as other people’s agents or as merchants of their own interests which may even be defined for them as is deemed convenient. Mercantilism may bring profit, but in power politics, it destroys integrity and compromises otherwise sacred values.

President Jonathan being publicly condemned by his own Ijaw brothers, particularly those who were once staunch supporters of his government further serves the purpose of exposing the limits of the politics of proximity. Politics in Africa is driven by this particular factor; it is at the root of all the other evils: prebendalism, clientelism and what Matthew Kukah has famously described as the “myownisation of power”. It is both positive and negative, but obviously, more of the latter than the former. It is considered positive only when it is beneficial to all parties concerned, and when the template changes, the ground also shifts. As in that song, the solid rock of proximity is soon replaced by shifting sands. Old worship becomes new opportunism. And the observant public is left confounded.

Chief E.K. Clark? Who would ever think, Chief E.K. Clark would publicly disown President Jonathan? He says Jonathan was a weak President. At what point did he come to that realization? Yet, throughout the five years (not six, please) of the Jonathan Presidency, he spoke loudly against anyone who opposed the President. He was so combative he was once quoted as suggesting that Nigeria could have problems if Jonathan was not allowed to return to office. Today, he is the one helping President Jonathan’s successor to quench the fires. He always openly said President Jonathan is “his son”. Today, he is not just turning against his own son, he is telling the world his son as President lacked the political will to fight corruption. He has also accused his son of being too much of a gentleman. Really? Gentlemanliness would be considered honourable in refined circles. Is Pa E.K. Clark recommending something else in order to prove that he is no longer a politician but a statesman as he says?

As someone who was a member of the Jonathan administration, and who interacted often with the old man, I can only say that I am shocked. This is the equivalent of the old man deleting President Jonathan’s phone number and ensuring that calls from his phone no longer ring at the Jonathan end. During the Jonathan years, Chief E. K. Clark was arguably the most vocal Ijaw leader defending the government. He called the President “my son”, and both father and son remained in constant touch.

There is something about having the President’s ears in a Presidential system, elevated to the level of a fetish in the clientilist Nigerian political system. Persons in the corridors of power who have the President’s ear- be they cook, valet, inlaws, wife, cousin, former school mates, priests, or whatever, enjoy special privileges. They have access to the President and they can whisper into his ears. That’s all they have as power: the power to whisper and run a whispering campaign that can translate into opportunities or losses for those outside that informal power loop around every Presidency, that tends to be really influential.

Every President must beware of those persons who come around calling them “Daddy”, “Uncle”, na my brother dey there”, “my son”, “our in-law”: emotional blackmailers relying on old connections. They are courted, patronized and given more attention and honour than they deserve by those looking for access to the President or government. Even when the power and authority of the whispering exploiters of the politics of proximity is contrived, they go out of their way to exaggerate it. They acquire so much from being seen to be in a position to make things happen.



Chief E. K. Clark had the President’s ears. He had unfettered access to his son. He was invited to most state events. And he looked out for the man he called “my son”, in whom he was well pleased. Chief Clark’s energy level in the service of the Jonathan administration was impressive. Fearless and outspoken, he deployed his enormous talents in the service of the Jonathan government. If a press statement was tame, he drew attention to it and urged a more robust defence of “your boss”. If any invective from the APC was overlooked, he urged prompt rebuttal. If the party was tardy in defending “his son”, he weighed in.

If anyone had accused the President of lacking “the political will to fight corruption” at that time, he, E.K. Clark, would have called a press conference to draw attention to the Jonathan administration’s institutional reforms and preventive measures, his commitment to electoral integrity to check political corruption, and the hundreds of convictions secured by both the ICPC and EFCC under his son’s watch. So prominent and influential was he, that ministers, political jobbers etc etc trooped to his house to pay homage.

In due course, those who opposed President Jonathan did not spare Chief E. K. Clark either. He was accused of making inflammatory and unstatesman-like statements. An old war-horse, nobody could intimidate him. He was not President Olusegun Obasanjo’s fan in particular. He believed Obasanjo wanted to sabotage his son, and he wanted Obasanjo put in his place. Beneath all of that, was an unmistaken rivalry between the two old men, seeking to control the levers of Nigerian politics.

Every President probably needs a strong, passionate ally like Chief E. K. Clark. But what happened? What went wrong? Don’t get me wrong. I am not necessarily saying that the Ijaw leader should have remained loyal to and defend Goodluck Jonathan because they are both Ijaws, patriotism definitely could be stronger than ethnic affinities, nonetheless that E. K. Clark tale about leaving politics and becoming a statesman is nothing but sheer crap. If Jonathan had returned to office, he would still be a card-carrying member of the PDP and the “father of the President” and we would still have been hearing that famous phrase, “my son”. Chief E. K. Clark, five months after, has practically told the world that President Buhari is better than “his own son”.

It is the worst form of humiliation that President Jonathan has received since he left office. It is also the finest compliment that President Buhari has received since he assumed office. The timing is also auspicious: just when the public is beginning to worry about the direction of the Buhari government, E. K. Clark shows up to lend a hand of support and endorsement. Only one phrase was missing in his statement, and it should have been added: “my son, Buhari.” It probably won’t be too long before we hear the old man saying “I am a statesman, Buhari is my son.” I can imagine President Obasanjo grinning with delight. If he really wants to be kind, he could invite E.K. Clark to his home in Ota or Abeokuta to come and do the needful by publicly tearing his PDP membership card and join him in that exclusive club of Nigerian statesmen! The only problem with that club these days is that you can become a member by just saying so or by retiring from partisan politics. We are more or less being told that there are no statesmen in any of the political parties.

It is not funny. Julius Ceasar asked Brutus in one of the famous lines in written literature: “Et tu Brutus?” President Jonathan should ask Chief E. K. Clark: “Et tu Papa?” To which the father will probably tell the son: “Ces’t la vie, mon cher garcon.” And really, that is life. In the face of other considerations, loyalties vanish; synergies collapse. The wisdom of the tribe is overturned; the politics of proximity dissolves; loyalties remain in a perpetual process of construction. Thus, individual interests and transactions drive the political game in Nigeria, with time and context as key determinants.

These are teachable moments for President Jonathan. Power attracts men and women like bees to nectar, the state of powerlessness ends as a journey to the island of loneliness. However, the greatest defender of our work in office is not our ethnic “fathers and “brothers” but rather our legacy. The real loss is that President Jonathan’s heroism, his messianic sacrifice in the face of defeat, is being swept under the carpet and his own brothers who used to say that the Ijaws are driven by a principle of “one for all and all for another”, have become agent-architects of his pain. The Ijaw platform having seemingly been de-centered, Chief E.K. Clark and others are seeking assimilation in the new power structure. It is a telling reconstruction of the politics of proximity and mimicry.



Chief E.K. Clark once defended the rights of ethnic minorities to aspire to the highest offices in the land, his latest declaration about his son reaffirms the existing stereotype at the heart of Nigeria’s hegemonic politics. The same hegemons and their agents whom Clark used to fight furiously will no doubt find him eminently quotable now that he has proclaimed that it is wrong to be a “gentleman”, and that his son lacks “the political will to fight corruption”. There is more to this than we may ever know. Chief Clark can insist from now till 2019, that he has spoken as a statesman and as a matter of principle. His re-alignment, is curious nonetheless.

Barely 10 days after Chief Olu Falae, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, gunmen yesterday ab­ducted Oba Adebisi Oba­demi, the traditional ruler of Apaa-Bunu community in Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State.



This comes as Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, on Tuesday, demanded the stoppage of nomadic ‎cattle rearing in the South West region of the country. The group said it believed Fulani herdsmen would no longer be tolerated in any part of Yoruba land after what happened to the former Secretary of the Government of the Federation, SGF, Chief Olu Falae.

Elombah.com had reported that Falae who was kidnapped and released last week and released after four days opened up and has been providing shocking details of his ordeal in the hands of his abductors..

An eyewitness told a Local newspaper that the traditional ruler was abducted at about 7.30 a.m. yesterday on his way to Odo – Ape, a suburb community close to his domain.

According to the Daily Sun, the gunmen, numbering about five and suspected to be Fulani herdsmen might have whisked the traditional ruler on a motorbike to an unknown destination.

While condemning the dastardly act, a prominent political leader in the area and a Senior Special Assistant to Governor Idris Wada, Duro Meseko, said the spate of kidnapping in the area was getting alarming and called on law enforcement agents to be pro active in their activities.



Meseko, who also called on the police authorities to establish a permanent police station in the area also decried the activities of Fulani herdsmen, who he alleged were frequently fomenting trouble in the area.

The governor’s aide also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to quickly address the issue of kidnapping in the country, saying law abiding citizens were now living in fear.

A source close to the Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Ojukwu, confirmed the incident but blamed the people in the area for allowing kidnapping to thrive in the area.

The source said when the police made attempts in the previous kidnap incidents to launch an attack on the hide out of the kidnappers in the area, the same people allegedly pleaded that they would rather pay the ransom to the kidnappers than exposing the victims to any form of hurt, adding that it makes the police helpless.

The source, however, quoted the CP to have vowed to flush out criminals in the area even as he urged residents to report any suspicious movement in the area, saying the police would not tolerate any incident of break down of law and order.

Report reaching The Paradigm reveals embattled Senate President Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki and fifteen (15) senators of the likemind group have opened negotiations with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and will announce their defection to the party soon.



Recalled Dr Saraki is locked in a bitter battle with his party the All Progressives Congress (APC), over his emergence as senate president.

The Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT last week issued a warrant arrest against the senate president after he failed to appear to be charged for false declaration of assets by the Code of Conduct Bureau, CCB.

However, Sen­ator Bukola Saraki, filed an appeal challenging the ruling of the Code of Conduct Tribunal that ordered the Inspector General of Police to arrest and bring him before the tribunal on Monday.

In his ground of appeal, Saraki through his coun­sel, J.B Daudu (SAN) sub­mitted that the tribunal erred in law and also act­ed without jurisdiction by assuming jurisdiction over the criminal trial of the appellant at the Code of Conduct Tribunal for a charge, which is being challenged at the Federal High Court.

Over the weekend, Dr. Saraki also accused his political enemies of using the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) to settle perceived political scores with him.

In a statement signed by his Senior Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Yusuph Olaniyonu, Saraki said he needed to caution that in a desperate bid to settle political scores and nail imaginary enemies, his opponent should not destroy democratic institutions and heat the polity for selfish reasons.

Dr. Saraki is billed to appear in court this morning.

New Media aide to the Senate President Mr. Bankole Omisore has denied reports by The Paradigm stating Dr. Bukola Saraki will be defecting to the PDP with 15 APC senators.

In a reply sent to The Paradigm inquiry, Bankole said there is no scintilla of truth in the report.

However, a source who was present at the stakeholders meeting conveyed by senate president insist the option of defection to the opposition party was extensively discussed.

In fact, “that was is th option available to us if senators from the Unity Forum go ahead with their impeachment plot’ the source told The Paradigm.



Recall this newspaper had published yesterday that senators of the Unity forum with selected senators from the PDP most of them former governors, had perfected a plot to impeach the senate president before ministerial screening begins.

The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja has stopped the proposed arrest of the President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, by the Code of Conduct Tribunal.
The Tribunal had on Friday issued the order for Saraki’s arrest for failing to honour its invitation.
The Chairman of the Tribunal, Justice Danladi Umar, had directed the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, to effect the arrest of Saraki and produce him before the Tribunal on Monday (today).
As at Sunday, the police said it was yet to receive official communication from the Tribunal for Saraki’s arrest.

US State Department has asked Adams Oshiomhole, the governor of Edo state, to name the official that told him a minister under ex-president Goodluck Jonathan administration stole $6 billion.

African Suntimes said the American officials denied telling Edo governor, who accompanied President Muhammadu Buhari during his state visit to the US, from the 19-22 of July.

The official said: “The U.S. should not be drawn into such irresponsible comment as alleged by Mr. Oshiomhole. America has a transparent administration that doesn’t hide when people make a statement. If Mr. Oshiomhole claims a U.S. official told him that a Nigerian minister stole $6 billion, he should name the official instead of hiding behind an anonymous source.”

Nigerians while reacting to the development alleged that Oshiomhole’s marriage to a beautiful Ethiopian model is getting to his head.

“He is trying to impress the woman, as ugly and short as he is. He thinks by making all these accusations and being in the public eye, he could maintain her staying with him. Look, his accusations have already worked – Buhari took him and his wife to Washington, DC,” said a Nigerian living in Washington, DC area.

It would be recalled that since President Buhari was sworn in on May 29, Oshiomhole has been on a campaign to involve some former ministers in the previous administration of stealing money.

Judith Amaechi, the shrewish wife of Rotimi Amaechi, the immediate past governor of Rivers State has been indicted in a multi-billion Naira corruption scandal, Nigerian Times has revealed.

As President Muhammadu Buhari heads to Washington to beg the Americans to help out with his much vaunted anti-corruption war, insiders are cringing at the composition of his delegation. Rotimi Amaechi was personally selected by the president. Nigerian Times’ checks at the villa showed that the president may not be aware of the existence of the dossier but the Americans know and may not take Buhari’s anti-corruption paean seriously.

Nigerian Times learnt in the weekend that the dossier itself is less than sixty days old. As the story goes, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had received a petition sometime in February this year. The petition detailed the various financial dealings of Mrs Amaechi and how aided by her husband, she had looted the Rivers State treasury of billions of naira.

EFCC’s Findings

Her dealings are centered on three bank accounts with a Port Harcourt branch of First Bank. The accounts in the name of Rajol Jireh Nig. Ltd, El-Madon Fellowship, and Empowerment Support Initiative. The first is her company; she is the biggest shareholder and sole-signatory to its accounts with her photo id. El- Madon Fellowship, is a prayer group she started when her husband was on the run for his life as he lost the gubernatorial ticket in the run up to the 2007 general elections. As soon as the Supreme Court installed her husband in office, she moved the prayer group to the state house and got it registered and emerged its sole signatory with photograph submitted to the bank. The last is her pet project as first lady.

The EFCC’s investigation found the transactions on the following accounts mind-boggling. Some of the accounts are denominated in Naira, while others are in Dollars. But one common factor of all the accounts is that they contain huge sums, which were only accessible to the former first lady of Rivers State.

The Accounts Include:

ESI – 4344020003193, a fixed deposit account
El-Madon Fellowship -4344020002981, another fixed deposit account,
Rajol Jireh Nig Ltd- 43440200031162, the main account
Rajol Jireh NIG ltd 2010701975 Naira; 4344030000125, a dollar fixed deposit account, and 2024239051 Naira fixed deposit account
Staffers of First Bank are not allowed to view these accounts, as they are passworded. The EFCC found that over eight billion naira passed through these accounts since they were opened in late 2008.

Some of the looted funds are invested in properties in Nigeria.

Nigerian Times learnt from a government house source familiar with the transactions that Mrs Amaechi’s method of transferring money abroad was akin to a bonanza. The bankers are encouraged to look for anyone with about a million dollars. He or she is then made a proposition: wire a million dollars to an account abroad and the naira equivalent plus an irresistible bonus is negotiated. So once the money hits the agreed account abroad, the naira equivalent and the agreed bonus leaves any of the First Bank accounts to another commercial bank in Port Harcourt, then it hits the accomplice’s account.

A source told of an unforgettable week back in 2009 when five staff of the bank were pulled off their desks to sort cash for Mrs Amaechi. It wasn’t as thought they were counting but were just pilling the bundles and they never got to the bottom of the cash until Sunday afternoon. They started out on Thursday.

For those who have not been following the unfolding drama, there are allegations that the Edo State governor has been mismanaging local government funds in the joint account into which funds allocated to the local governments by FAAC are paid into. Of course, governors are sole signatories of such accounts. They decide how much to release to the LGs contrary to the laws of the land. The allegation is that the Edo governor has been manipulating this account and this is responsible for the backlog of unpaid salaries by LGs in Edo State. So many local governments in Edo State owe salaries ranging from three to 10 months. Let me put the sleaze allegations directly to the Emperor of Edo State: That you, Oshiomhole plundered the joint State/LG Account and used the money for the 2015 elections; that you have nothing on ground to show for the N30 billion facility obtained from the capital market and the N5 billion received from the World Bank to curtail erosion and that you pay yourself N500 million monthly as Security Vote, which is an illegality.

The Edo PDP says it is ready to provide more fact and has called on the EFCC to extend its current anti-corruption crusade to Edo State, adding: “We have more than enough materials to nail the corrupt practices of the political leaders in Edo State starting with the governor.” Oshiomhole should let Edo people know how much accrued to the joint account with the LGs in the last six years and the disbursements. The allegation is that there is a big gap between accruals and disbursements. Please, set the record straight instead of running after former finance minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweaala. The Emperor of Edo has spent the last seven weeks asking Okonjo-Iweala to explain all manners of completely wild and unsupported figures, ranging from $30 billion, $20 billion, $2.1 billion, N720 billion and now $1 billion. A man that has failed to respond to his own query is all over the place issuing queries to another person. I trust that the new look EFCC is monitoring development in Edo State.

The Presidency Tuesday said it has not included funds in the Excess Crude Account (ECA) in the bailout package approved by President Muhammadu Buhari for states to pay wages as reported in the media.

A statement by Femi Adesina, the President Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, said the bailout funds would be drawn from dividends from the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG), adding that funds in the ECA estimated to be around $1.7 billion by the Accountant General of the Federation, would remain intact.



“Reports in sections of the media today that funds will be drawn from the Excess Crude Account for the relief package approved by President Muhammadu Buhari for states and local governments, are incorrect.

“For the purpose of greater clarity on the matter, the measures approved by President Buhari to deal with the problem of unpaid public sector salaries in many states are as follows:

“*The sharing of the $2.1 Billion dividend paid to the Federation Account by the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Company (NLNG);

“* A Central Bank-packaged special intervention fund that will offer financing to the states, ranging from N250 Billion to N300 Billion. This will be a soft loan available to states for the purposes of paying backlog of salaries; and

“*A debt relief program designed by the Debt Management Office which will help states restructure their commercial loans currently put at over N660 Billion, and extend the life span of such loans while reducing their debt-servicing expenditures.

“The measures approved by President Buhari definitely do not include drawing down the remaining balance in the Excess Crude Account or the “liquidation” of the account as some media outlets have wrongly reported.

“No such decision has been taken or approved by President Buhari, and last week’s meeting of the National Economic Council clearly concluded that the Excess Crude Account should be left untouched at this time,” the statement said.

United States Assistant Secretary for African Affairs Linda Thomas-Greenfield and African Commission (AFRICOM) chief General David Rodriguez, during an appearance on Live at State, a Department of State webcast, spoke on President Muhammadu Buhari’s planned Washington trip, Ebola, Boko Haram and other foreign affairs-related matters.

Excerpts:

The U.S. President has extended an invitation to Nigeria’s President Buhari. What should Nigerians expect from this visit?[/b]

What Nigerians should expect is that this will reaffirm the strong relationship that we have with the government and the people of Nigeria. We will be discussing with President Buhari moving forward how we can support his efforts to address his priorities for Nigeria. He’s indicated that his major priorities are dealing with the security situation, addressing the economy, and also addressing the issue of corruption and asset retrieval. So, we will have discussions with him on what we can do in those areas to support him. And I think for the Nigerian people, again, it highlights the importance of our relationship with Nigeria moving forward.

In the last administration, the U.S. refused to sell arms to Nigeria, citing human rights abuses allegedly committed by security forces as the reason. With a change of government, has that position changed?

That’s a policy decision led by our State Department in Nigeria, and right now we are continuing to engage with the new government to see how effective that is as it moves forward. And we are prepared to move at the pace and rate that the State Department leads this as we rebuild those relationships in Nigeria.

Let me just add to that. As you heard in my opening statement, President Buhari is going to be in Washington later this month for meetings with the administration, and we will have discussions with him moving forward on what we can do to continue to assist the Nigerians in their efforts to fight against Boko Haram. And part of that discussion will be how we can provide the equipment and support that the Nigerians require. Human rights are an important value for the U.S., and in any place where we are providing lethal weapons, we want to know that the military that we are providing those to do not use that in a way that violates the human rights of ordinary civilians. So, we will have that discussion moving forward, and it is our hope that as we discuss these issues with the Nigerian government, we will also have a discussion with them on how to better prepare their military to support communities and build confidence in communities and not be part of the – not be victimised in the efforts of the military to fight against Boko Haram.

In recent times, what has been the support of the U.S. to the Nigerian military in general?

We have supported the Nigerian military building capacity in some of their units. So, we have a great relationship, for example, with the special boat squadron and the navy. We are also participating in a combined fusion centre where we share intelligence with the senior leadership of the Nigerian military and their intelligence services and the police force. And we continue to be prepared to grow that relationship in the future.

U.S. intelligence teams were recently in Nigeria to help track the Chibok girls. Over a year after their arrival, the story has not yet changed. What went wrong?

The U.S. has continued to share intelligence with the Nigerian leadership with those Shabaab girls as well as other people who have been taken by Boko Haram, and we continue to do that. As far as the effort, I think it – while it didn’t yield getting back all the girls, there have been many of the people that were held by Boko Haram that have been freed over time, and we continue to pursue efforts to get the Chibok girls back.

Let me just add that this has been an extremely high priority for the U.S. government to assist in bringing these girls home, but also in bringing the hundreds of other girls and young boys who were forcefully taken by Boko Haram. We have seen that about 700-plus have recently returned, and we are supporting efforts of the government and NGOs (Non-Governmental Organisations) to provide support to those young girls who have – who have fortunately been freed. We will not let up on our efforts. We will continue to work with the government. We commend President Buhari and his wife for visiting the families of the Chibok girls and letting them know that we have not forgotten about them.

The Multinational Joint Task Force was recently formed. What support will the U.S. provide to support the effort?

We have been working with the countries in the region to support the Multinational Joint Task Force (MJTF), and during my recent trip to the African Union (AU) summit in Johannesburg, South Africa we announced the contribution of $5 million towards the setup of the MJTF and we will continue to work with the governments in the region to support that. I think the general’s back, so I’ll turn it over to the general to talk more about some of the more specific support we’re providing.

We have a coordination cell in N’Djamena, Chad that is part of a French and British as well as the partner African nations – all four of them that are participating in the MJTF. In that coordination cell, we share intelligence with each of the respective countries. We also have people in their tactical headquarters at both Maroua, in Cameroon, in N’Djamena, in Chad, and then over in Diffa in Niger who are advising and assisting the countries involved the MJTF in their struggle against Boko Haram.

What does the U.S. do to help put an end to the jihadist problem in the Sahel and to Boko Haram in the Lake Chad Basin?

Peace and security on the continent of Africa is our highest priority. And we are working closely – and I’d like General Rodriguez also respond to this question. We have been working very closely with our partners in the Sahel, in Nigeria, the Lake Chad Basin countries, and that I would as well mention in the Horn of Africa dealing with al-Shabaab, to help build their capacity but also support their efforts and to contribute to their efforts to fight against extremism on the continent of Africa.

This has had a tremendous impact on the continent. Every single day I read in the paper that dozens of people across the continent of Africa are being killed by extremists. So, we know that this is something that requires all of our efforts to address, and we’re working closely with our African partners to do that.

Well, as you know, we’ve got a long-term effort to both build the partner capacity of those nations involved in the fight against violent extremists. We also, of course, continue to support our French partners who are working hard in Mali, Niger and Chad to help defeat the scourge of terrorism in that region. And we continue over – around the Boko Haram region, we have great long-term capacity-building successes in both Cameroon and Chad that have helped to take that fight to the enemy, as well as over in Niger.

With Nigerians, we continue to share intelligence, and that has continued to help them push back and open up some of the areas that had recently been held in the Boko Haram’s hands, and we continue to look forward to building those capacities even better so that they can take care of that situation by themselves.

What is the U.S. position with regard to African countries whose constitution does not limit presidential terms, allowing the outgoing president to effectively run endlessly?

Our position on transition and the importance of transition is very clear. We do believe in a democracy, that it’s important that countries go through transitions, that they actually have votes that allow for a change in government. We are certainly very strong on governments not changing their constitutions to encourage the restrictions on term limits. But for those countries that have constitutions that do not require term limits, we are engaged with those countries with their heads of state to encourage that they allow there to be change. People want change. We have seen polls that have been taken across Africa that indicate that broadly African citizens want there to be term limits. They don’t want to have presidents for life. And we support those efforts.

How do you assess the military strength of al-Shabaab in light of its continued attacks inside and outside of Somalia? U.S., UN, and Somali officials say it has been weakened, but just last week al-Shabaab overran an AMISOM base and killed several Burundian soldiers.

Yes. Since al-Shabaab’s height of its strength several years ago, it has decreased in strength overall, but that does not mean it is anything less of a threat. As they lost more territory in Somalia that they controlled because of the great efforts of the AMISOM troops, they have taken to the asymmetric attacks back in the homeland, those nations – and the worst you can see recently being Kenya. But they have – they can also at any time focus their energy on an isolated place like they did against the Burundian contingent here recently. The AMISOM efforts continue apace and they continue to do a good job decreasing the overall effect or the overall strength of al-Shabaab, but that does not mean that al-Shabaab is not still dangerous, as you can see by the recent days’ attacks.

What is your reaction to the elections taking place in Burundi on Monday? Can the U.S. stop President Nkurunziza from running for a third term? How about DRC and Rwanda that have elections coming up too?

We have expressed our extreme disappointment with the decision of President Nkurunziza to go forward with the elections that took place on Monday and as well his plans to go forward with presidential elections in mid-July. We have also expressed our view that we do not believe, under the Arusha accord, or the constitution, that the president should be seeking a third term. President Nkurunziza has had 10 – what I would call relatively stable – years as president of Burundi. He has a legacy of having established this country in a time of peace and that legacy should also include turning the government over and not running for a third term. We think that has contributed to the violence that we see taking place and it is contributing to instability in the region. We all think that his decision, against tremendous pressure, to go forward and running for a third term sends a bad signal, a bad message across the continent and other countries where we have encouraged their heads of state and leaders not to seek third terms but to allow for transition, to allow the people’s voices to be heard.

So, we will continue to apply pressure. We are encouraging that there be dialogue moving forward. We would like to see the election that is scheduled to take place in mid-July be delayed so that there can be dialogue. And our ultimate goal is that Burundi achieves peace for its people. We do not want to see the violence that is taking place there continue. We do not want to see the instability that is taking root continue to spread across Burundi and possibly across the continent as – at least Central Africa – as we are seeing refugees move from Burundi to Tanzania, to Rwanda, and to DRC.

Why has the U.S. reduced its human rights and democracy-related programmes in Africa? This is because governments in Africa are used to rule well only under foreign pressure? And we saw that both U.S. and EU intervention on these domains have helped Africa’s development.

I fully agree with your statement that we need to continue to focus on democracy and governance across Africa. It is one of the highest priorities and it is part of our mission for the Africa Bureau to continue to support those efforts. So, we do support democracy and governance, as you saw in the recent intense and robust involvement that we had in supporting civil society, in supporting the electoral commission to do its job in Nigeria, and we will continue to support those efforts. The African continent is extraordinarily large and we’re not always in every place that we would like to be, but we have our embassies and our ambassadors engaging with governments to ensure that they understand the high priority that we give to their supporting the movement of democracy and civil society in their countries.

What has been done in terms of progress in sub-Saharan Africa in the field of fight against corruption?

As you know, one of the initiatives that came out of the historic Africa Leaders Summit last year was an initiative on illicit finance and fighting corruption. And Senegal, volunteered to lead that effort, and just this past week, Senegal hosted a meeting on how we can fight illicit financing and they invited countries from across the continent.

This is something that is extremely important. The AU just completed a study last year where they looked at illicit finance and determined that billions of dollars of hard-earned capital across Africa is being siphoned off and being taken away from efforts of governments to build capacity, to build infrastructure, and to provide services to their people. So, this is something that we are working regularly with our African counterparts on. We have commitments from governments that they want to be involved in this fight, that they want to stop corruption. And as you know, a number of the programs that we have to support Africa’s progress such as AGOA, do have benchmarks on corruption. The Millennium Challenge Account has benchmarks on corruption as well. So, this is something, again, that we look forward to making progress on in the next few months.

The issue of refugees and migration appears to be on the increase despite efforts by governments to address the challenge. What best do you think this issue – how best do you think this issue can be addressed?

As you know, my background before coming back to the Africa Bureau was in the bureau of refugee and migration programmes – PRM – Population, Refugees and Migration. And I was just distressed to hear that in Africa, a million new refugees were added to the numbers this year alone. Many of those refugees have come out of Nigeria into neighboring countries. But, also the recent refugee flow from Burundi to Tanzania and to Rwanda and DRC. We think there’s close to a hundred thousand refugees just from that flow.

And the solution is to end fighting. The solution is to bring peace to these countries. And I didn’t mention even the situation in South Sudan where more than a million people have been displaced as refugees and displaced in their countries because of a man-made crisis.

So, we do have to deal with the issue of conflict. We have to deal with the issue of providing the institutional capacity in governments to support their people and to do the right things for their people. We are deeply engaged in trying to find the solution to the situation in South Sudan with our special envoy out in the region relentlessly meeting with both parties and with the countries in the region to bring the two leaders to the negotiating table and encourage them and urge them to do the right thing by their people.

So it’s still a work in progress. In the meantime, the people of Africa continue to suffer.

As you’re well aware, another Ebola case was found in Liberia this week. Are you concerned that Ebola is coming back, or has the tide turned against the disease?

I do think the tide has turned against the disease. But these – this new case in Liberia is just a warning to us that the job is not done, that we have to continue to remain vigilant, and to continue to message and communicate with populations about doing the right thing when they find that their relatives or neighbors are ill. And our hope is that this battle will eventually end for the moment, but again, we will continue to remain engaged with the governments in the regions and their communities to ensure that Ebola does not take hold again in the way that we were dealing with it last summer. The numbers are down again, but the fight is not over, and there’s still a great deal of work that needs to be done.

In particular, we have to help these governments build their health infrastructure so that they have the resilience when there’s this kind of event, this kind of crisis, that they can respond in a way that does not cause their health infrastructure to totally collapse, as we saw happen in West Africa. So, thank you.

The military has a lot of skin in the game in Liberia for the Ebola response as well. Do you have anything you’d like to add on that

No, just as the assistant secretary said, there’s still work to be done. There has been some capacity-building efforts already. And I think that just with the initial reports coming out of this individual who got sick, that the things that they had learned in the past that were successful between the isolation and the chain contact, as well as the burial standards that the USAID has helped them build, that they will be able to better handle the situation now so that it doesn’t get out of hand as it had been before.

You mentioned AGOA, which is a very important piece of legislation for trade in Africa. Can you comment on what that legislation would mean?

What that legislation means is that – first, it shows our confidence in Africa and in our trade relationship with Africa. But secondly, what it means to Africa is better business opportunities. It means more jobs. It means jobs on the continent of Africa. And it also means jobs in the U.S. And the companies that are benefiting from AGOA really welcomed the signing of this legislation. It gave them the confidence to move forward, to sign deals on delivery of goods and services that will take place over the next few years. We will be hosting the AGOA Forum in Gabon in August, and we are delighted that this legislation has been signed and will be, again, a signal of the U.S. commitment and confidence in Africa’s future.

Apparently disturbed by the weight of the petition filed by the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State, Chief Emeka Ihedioha against the state governor, Chief Rochas Okorocha at the state governorship election petition tribunal, Okorocha has appealed to the traditional rulers of Mbaise extraction to persuade the petitioner to drop his case.

The governor was also said to have also asked Mbaise monarchs to prevail on the head of Ihedioha’s legal team, Chief Mike Ahamba (SAN), an Mbaise man, to withdraw the petition in the interest of the state. Okorocha challenged the traditional rulers on Thursday, during a meeting with members of the state council of traditional rulers in Owerri, to do everything within their powers to persuade their sons to withdraw the petition.

The 40 traditional rulers who sued the governor were conspicuously absent from the meeting.

Meanwhile, the governor has directed the 40 traditional rulers in the state, who dragged him and the government to court to withdraw the suit without further delay and to also tender an apology, adding that such action amounted to insult and embarrassment to the governor and the government.

The governor said for the 40 traditional rulers to have gone to court against him and the government for no tenable reason, means they must have mistaken his patience, tolerance and respect for the people of the state as weakness.
The 40 traditional rulers had gone to court on ground that the governor had suspended them.

The governor said the traditional rulers were out to malign him and his government because he never suspended the 40 traditional rulers or sacked them or even queried any of them as Eze, and had not taken any action that suggested that he had any plan to go against the traditional rulers and then questioned the rationale behind the traditional rulers taking him to court.

He also explained that the State Council of Traditional Rulers, led by Eze Samuel Ohiri, does not have the right to suspend or remove any Eze from his stool, adding that it was only the governor who has that right, and he had never exercised such right against the traditional rulers in question.

He noted that the leadership of the traditional rulers council only suspended four of their members from the Council and not as Ezes as to begin to suspect that they acted on behalf of the governor or the government.

The governor however directed at the meeting that whatever money that was owed the traditional rulers in the state should be paid within a week and dissolved the traditional ruler’s councils in the Local Government Areas, because their tenures had expired long before now.

President Muhammadu Buhari today maintained that despite he is being accused of aloofness, and lack of grip in his party affairs, he is still the leader of the party.

He made veiled reference to remarks by some senior members of the party who have refused to recognize Buhari as leader of the party as it was during the days of Ex President’s Goodluck Jonathan, and Olusegun Obasanjo.

Top brass, and one of the leaders, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu had indicted the president for failing to get involved in the party’s affair which led to the current messy situation within the party’s caucus in the National Assembly.

According to Tinubu; “Despite the choice of National Assembly leaders being a mixture of party politics and legislative duty, the aloofness, or the perceived neutrality of the President allowed the ‘fight’ within APC to fester until it went of hand.”

Spokesman, Lai mohammed had also derided the president when he insisted that Buhari is not the party leader but ‘a product of the APC’, but that the leader is Tinubu.

He had said ” President Muhammadu Buhari is not our leader, he is a product of the party. Tinubu is our leader”

But on Channels TV’s programme earlier today, the president maintained that he remained consistent in his belief that the legislature is independent and that would guide his approach to the leadership crisis.

The crisis in the National Assembly has been blamed on the APC’s seeming stance that they do not have an individual as their leader, who could drive the effort to unify the party in times of crisis, but speaking for his boss today, presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu disagreed.

“Does it need to be said? I don’t think it needs to be said that the President is the leader of his party. There’s no question about it,” Mr Shehu said.

He added that there is need for Nigerians to understand the basics of politics as the country is no more in the military era when decrees are made by a single leader.

“Politics, as its theory says, is basically about contest for interests and these interests may be fully defined by political party programme (while) some of these things may be outside political party programme,” he said, adding that coming from different states there would be different needs influencing the interests every politician would promote.

He also noted that the lawmakers should be appreciated for allowing varying views, “They just cannot pile up in a single line and say ‘here we are, we are all present’.

“When the governors met with the President they told him that ‘we are the leaders in our states and we have influence over all of these senators. They come from our places and from us and we can handle it.”

He affirmed that if the governors are unable to resolve the matter then the President would wade in directly.

“The President has a responsibility to the party, the President has a responsibility to the nation and as far as we are looking at the situation it has not gotten out of control. It is still within manageable parameters, it is a little storm we will overcome and Nigerians better get used to it.”

STRONG indications have emerged of world power’s resolve to assist the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, in its avowed fight against corruption, by reportedly providing him with unimpeachable pieces of evidence and information about allegedly corrupt Nigerians in public offices and where their alleged funds and questionable property are domiciled abroad.
Nigerian Tribune was told by a close government source that a list of the alleged corrupt Nigerians, including elected public officials, appointed officials and their collaborators in the private sector, was said to have been made available to Buhari while attending the G7 meeting in Germany.
Looted public funds reportedly stashed abroad were said to be included in the package the world leaders reportedly made available to Buhari, with a commission to recover such funds as an encouraging step in getting global assistance on the issues on his “wish list.”
The top government source disclosed that the president was unequivocally told by his hosts that the recovery of the looted funds must be seen to be religiously done by his administration before their home countries and other global bodies could be financially supportive of Nigeria, as well as rendering help in other areas Buhari was seeking their assistance.
The said list reportedly contained names of serving and past governors, past ministers and government contractors, especially in the oil and gas sector.
Apart from banks where the alleged slush funds were domiciled, locations of assets suspected to have been illegally acquired were reportedly listed in the said list, which was said to have been a product of years of painstaking discreet investigation abroad.
A lot of assets allegedly illegally acquired by these public officials were said to have been largely traced to South Africa and Dubai.
An immediate past governor of a state in the South was said to have been linked to a multi-billion Naira property in South-Africa, where four separate huge buildings were allegedly bought by him at a go.
With property being reportedly registered by nationality in another country, a simple search of letter “N” was said to have brought up names of Nigerians with massive property investment.
Those property, according to the source, are now of rock-bottom value, compared to the huge funds invested in them.
It was learnt that in achieving the desire of killing corruption in the country, a total overhaul of the existing anti-corruption bodies would be done for a more effective operation.
The government source noted that though the planned merger of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) was almost a certainty, the focus of the operation of the amalgamated body might be a bit different from what it used to be.
According to the source, greater attention might be focused on recovery of looted funds instead of prosecuting and jailing offenders, though the latter would always be a part of the anti-corruption crusade to serve as a deterrent.
Nigerian Tribune was told that a situation where someone would go to jail for a couple of years to return to enjoy the looted funds would not serve the interest of the justice system, adding that all proceeds of crime must be taken off the offenders.

He had earlier been projected for the Attorney General of the Federation position alongside Chief Niyi Akintola, Chief Rotimi Akeredolu and the immediate past Lagos State governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola, all from the South-West, while Prince Lateef Fagbemi from the North-Central was also said to be interested in the job.

As President Muhammadu Buhari hosts the head of the leading global corruption watchdog Clare Short this week, top on the agenda will be a probe of how Nigeria allegedly remitted only $100m for the sale of oil blocks on which the country was paid $1.85bn, credible sources have revealed.

Clare Short, who is the Chair of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) arrived in the country on Monday on a three-day working visit. She is expected to hold talks with President Buhari on the implementation of the independent reports of the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI).

The Meeting which is also expected to provide the International Chair the platform to brief the President on the importance of integrating the EITI principles in his economic policy agenda as obtainable in resource rich countries of the developed world, is also seen as a global endorsement of President Buhari’s commitment to good governance, transparency and accountability.

Buhari had listed the implementation of the findings and recommendations of NEITI Audit Reports as a priority within his administration’s 100 days in office.

The executive secretary of NEITI, Zainab Ahmed, had said last week that over $7.5bn between 1999-2011 still needed to be recovered from oil and gas companies in Nigeria.

“The amount represents clear cases of underpayments, under-assessments of taxes, royalties, rents… which have not been adequately addressed in the past,” she said.

NEITI has suggested selling the state oil company’s stakes in producing joint ventures to fix its budget woes, a call echoed by many in the new administration, as well as scrapping the expensive and graft-riddled fuel subsidy.

The government relies on oil sales for the bulk of its revenues but there has been little oversight of how these are handled. Central bank governor Lamido Sanusi was sacked by Goodluck Jonathan after he said that up to $20bn in oil revenues between 2012 and 2013 had not been remitted to the government by the state oil company – NNPC.

Buhari said he would re-examine this allegation. Ahmed also said NEITI audits showed that some $11.6bn of dividends between 1999 and 2012 from the government’s investment in the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) company were not remitted by the state oil company.

“NNPC was unable to provide any evidence that the funds were remitted to the federation as required by law,” she said.

NNPC said the issue of reconciling accounts had been raised at a previous Inter-Ministerial Task Team and would be discussed this week. The team was designed to implement NEITI’s findings.

NEITI has also said the sale of eight oilfields to NNPC’s upstream arm in 2010-2011 under Jonathan should be reviewed, as they were sold at $1.85 billion of which only $100 million was remitted to the federation account in February 2014.

Before his sack by Jonathan, Sanusi also criticized some of these deals for being awarded non-competitively to companies that supplied no services.

Governor Nyesom Wike of River state as with immediate effect ordered the sack of the 344 newly recruited staff of the state Polytechnic, Bori.

The sacked Lecturers were those the former Governor Rotimi Amaechi hurriedly employed at the eve of the expiration of his administration.

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the institution, Innocent Ogbonnaya Nwanwo , said the government also directed the Rector of the polytechnic, Sir Obianko Worlu Elechi to proceed on compulsory leave.

Nwanwo said the sack of the newly recruited staff, as well as the directive on the Rector to proceed on compulsory leave was contained in a directive sent to the Polytechnic by the State Ministry of Education.

He said, “The recent employment exercise we had at the Rivers State Polytechnic, Bori has been cancelled. The reason is that the government needed to review the process of their employment. The process that brought in the newly employed people; don’t forget, they have not started work, has been called off; it has been terminated by the state government.

“Right now, they don’t have a job here in the Rivers State Polytechnic. Technically speaking, that is the truth. The Rector is on leave; he was asked to proceed on leave.”

One of the sacked lecturers of the institution, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said their recruitment, which followed due process dates back to September 2014.

He therefore urged, The executive governor Nyesom Wike, traditional rulers, the State House of Assembly to intervene.

A non-political association called Leadership by Example League International, LELI, has called for the arrest and suspension of the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Senator Barnabas Gemade by the party.

The group called for their arrest due to what it called ‘April fool in June’.

LELI accused Tinubu and Gemade of colluding to mislead the APC senators that “President Muhammadu Buhari was coming to address the Senate when there was a due letter of proclamation of the National Assembly”.

In a statement by Dr. Batos Nwadike, Chancellor of the group on Thursday evening in Abuja, stated that the statement by Tinubu not to recognise the leadership of Senator Bukola Saraki as the senate president was “shameful and embarrasing.”

Saraki was on Tuesday, elected unopposed, with 57 lawmakers present voting for him, with 51 absent, while Hon. Yakubu Dogara was elected as the Speaker of the House of Representatives, defeating Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila from Lagos State by 8 votes.

In a terse statement, Bola Ahmed Tinubu had after the election, vowed never to recognise Saraki as the gavel handler and landlord in the house.

“I will never recognize such a kangaroo arrangement that produced Bukola as the Senate President.”
Or how do you want me to recognise a man who deliberately defied his own party because of his personal interest? It is not done anywhere,’’ Tinubu fumed.

According to the group, On the day of the NASS leadership election, Tinubu and Germade had colluded with the leadership of the APC to call for a meeting at the International Confference Centre, ICC, Abuja to resolve the impasse trailing who emerged as the sole candidates of the Party by 9.00am, using the name of President Muhammadu Buhari as a convener.

It called on the APC to consider the suspension of Tinubu and Gemade in the interest of the nation for using the name of the President to cause confusion and conmmotion in the nation, therefore calling it ‘April Fool in June.’

The group said it is hopeful that with the election of Saraki as Senate president and Senator Ike Ekweremadu as deputy Senate president, the upper legislative house was poised to give effective leadership.

It urged aggrieved senators to sheathe their swords and give the leadership of Saraki/Ekweremadu the desired support.

Following disquiet in some quarters over the non-participation of Vice-President, Yemi Osinbajo at different security meetings held by President Muhammadu Buhari since assumption of office, DAILY POST on Thursday reached out to informed security source to explain the rationale behind the development.

DAILY POST recalls that on Tuesday June 2, 2015, Buhari met with the National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki, the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh, Chief of Army Staff, Major General Kenneth Minimah; Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Usman O. Jibrin; Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Adesola Amosu; Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase.

Miffed by the development, a number of media houses reported that Osinbajo was ‘locked out’ of the meeting on the orders of the President.

Ten days after, the ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC) is yet to comment on why Osinbajo didn’t attend the meeting.

Again, on Wednesday June 10, the President met behind closed doors with the NSA and some security chiefs ahead of Thursday’s meeting of the Lake Chad Basin Commission in Abuja.

Osinbajo was no where around Defence House, venue of the meeting.

Speaking to DAILY POST on reactions trailing Osinbajo’s absence, our source said the VP may not be granted access to such meetings soon.

The source who is well-connected to many Security agencies and their top echelons reminded those accusing Buhari of sidelining the Vice President that Osinbajo is a legal luminary, not a security expert.

His words: “I am sure he would have been invited if he had security background. Being a Professor of Law is fine, but in terms of intelligence and access to security information, you are no where near the rank of Colonel or equivalent in the Nigeria Military.”

“Look, I have watched some footages that if the VP gets to see, he would lose appetite for days.

“Now, we have someone who has been in luxury virtually all his life, attaining the position of VP and some people are clamouring for his presence in highly sensitive talks.

“The truth is that the military hierarchy would not even feel comfortable saying some things in his presence.

“I can tell you that they respect Prof Osinbajo as VP, but they cannot trust him with information yet.”

“You cannot compare him to Buhari who served in many military roles, chased away a militia that was threatening Nigeria security, overthrew a military government, became Head of State, fought corruption and went ahead to instill discipline among a stubborn citizenry.”

Asked if Osinbajo would continue to stay back and watch, the source responded: “He would be brought in but not now.”

“The VP would have to go through what is called ‘Stimulation’. This is a process where he is lectured on terms, dealings, operations etc of the military.”

“His inner strength, strong heart and ability to keep things to himself will first be put to test before he gets access to some classified materials and information.”

On possibility of politics being a reason why Osinbajo has not been part of the security meetings, the source said such cannot be ruled out.

“We must understand the fact that Osinbajo was a candidate promoted by Bola Tinubu (ex-Lagos Governor), he was not handpicked by Buhari.

“If the President had picked a vice, it is likely that such individual may get the access Osinbajo isn’t getting now.

“Everyone knows the VP has been loyal to Tinubu for decades and he cannot swear that he would not divulge details of these security meetings to his political godfather.

“So he has to earn it. Tinubu may have used his influence to put him in this position but he must draw a line between blind loyalty and national duty.”
