AguluLiar:
.

You dey lie
Mention one component in a vehicle that can be manufactured in Nigeria.
Even, ordinary mirrors are all imported.

No vehicle manufacturing company in Nigeria.

They all assemble.
Clearly you don't know anything (maybe that's why you have that name). Vehicle components have been manufactured in Nigeria since as far back as the 1980s. There were and are many companies that manufacture such components.

naptu2:
That guy on Twitter is currently trying to explain something that I have stated on Nairaland many times. Unfortunately because of political propaganda and self hate, many Nigerians find it difficult to understand this.

Cars are assembled, they are not fully made in one factory. If you got to the Mercedes Benz plant at Sindelfingen in Germany, you'll discover that it is an assembly plant, if you go to the Bentley plant at Crewe, you'll discover that it is an assembly plant and if you go to the Ford factory at Dearborn in Michigan, you'll also discover that it is an assembly plant.

Why is this so?

Well, it's because a car is made up of very many components and no car maker makes all the components in their cars. Therefore, the parts have to be brought from the manufacturers and assembled at the car maker's plant.

Furthermore, a car is not just made up of its individual parts. An engine does not make a car, the chassis is not the car, neither is the windshield the car. They have to be put together before you can say you have a car. Therefore, car assemblers are car makers.

Finally (and this is what that guy showed, even though his thread was not about cars), some people have the wrong notion that when cars were assembled in Nigeria in the 1970s and '80s, all the parts were simply brought from abroad and put together here. That is not true.

I remember an old Peugeot newspaper advert from the 1980s in which they listed all their suppliers across Nigeria. This quote below is from an old argument that I had with some people that were trying to condemn Innoson (I now regret arguing with such ignorant people).

1) Not all major car companies design and engineer their vehicles. These are sometimes contracted out. See the example I already provided of the Volkswagen Sharan. The first generation Volkswagen Sharan was also made by Ford as the Ford Galaxy and by Seat as the Seat Alhambra. Ford, Volkswagen and Seat are major car companies. The first generation Volkswagen Santana GX was known as the Nissan Santana in Japan, the Ford Versailles in America and the FAW Santana in China. You can't tell me that Ford and Nissan are not major car companies. And there are many more examples.

2) Innoson vehicles are not all Donfeng vehicles. In fact, most of their vehicles are made in partnership with BAIC (the SUV that is the subject of this thread is a BAIC BJ80), GAC GoNow, etc.

3) Innoson vehicles are also modified to fit Nigerian roads and many of the parts are made by Nigerian companies (most of which are based in Nnewi). For example, the plastic that's used in Innoson vehicles is made by Innoson Technical and Industrial Co. Ltd. and other parts are made by Ibeto, Chicason, Omata, etc.

4) I totally agree with you that PAN, VON, Anamco have already made cars in Nigeria. I witnessed when these plants were in full production. I remember when Peugeot produced their first Peugeot 504 that had 50% Nigerian components. The suppliers included ISO Glass Ibadan, which supplied the automotive glass for the windscreen, Nocaco, which supplied the wire harness, Michelin Nigeria, which supplied the tyres (Michelin had 3 or 4 rubber plantations in Nigeria, including one at the Edo-Ondo border, and they made the tyres in their factory in Lagos), the car seat company in Kaduna (I can't remember its name), etc. The part suppliers included companies that made the automotive batteries, lubricants, clutch cables, mudguards, wiper blades, brake pads, automobile paints, exhaust pipes, etc And I also remember what happened to the nigerian companies that made those products when those assembly plants collapsed.
If you lived in Nigeria in the 1970s and '80s, there is no way that you would not have heard of Vono. It seemed as if all mattresses, pillows and bed frames in Nigeria were made by Vono. Well, Vono also made car seats for some of the cars that were assembled in Nigeria. Ferodo in Ibadan made brake pads for some of the cars that were assembled in Nigeria.

What I'm getting at is that some people, either due to inferiority complex, hatred for Nigeria or for political reasons, try to condemn Nigerian assembly plants like Innoson, PAN, ANAMMCO, etc. and to claim that they do not do anything else but to put together complete knockdown kits that are imported from abroad. These people claim that the only reason that these plants have been established is to help carmakers to avoid paying import duties and that Nigeria does not benefit anything from them. That is a lie.

Those plants provide employment, not only to the people that work in them, but also to people that work in companies like Vono, Ferodo, Nocaco, etc. They also help Nigerians to gain experience and, like I have always stated, many car companies began by assembling cars from foreign brands before they gained the experience and ability to make their own home made vehicles. I always remind people of what Proton of Malaysia did.

naptu2 post=93015678:
Memories.

I have written about this before and I think today is a good day to write about it agin.

In 1989 the Malaysian ambassador to Nigeria went to Dodan Barracks to present a car to President Babangida. I watched the event on the NTA Network News. They said that the car was called Proton and that it was the first car brand that was made in Malaysia.

The newspapers went crazy the next day. Columnists wrote that the Malaysians came to Nigeria in the 1960s to take samples of our palm oil and that they had become the biggest palm oil selling nation in the world by 1989. They said that Nigeria was ahead of Malaysia in all indices in the 1960s, but now Malaysia had produced a car while Nigeria could not produce anything.

Imagine how I felt when I discovered that the Proton was just a rebadged Mistubishi Lancer. The Peugeot 504 that was made in Nigeria in 1989 had more local components in it than that Proton Saga!

Today Proton actually owns Lotus.
naptu2:
Made in Nigeria or assembled in Nigeria?

Smh. Some people will never learn.

I asked the supermods to move this thread to the front page with the hope that some people will learn from it, but unfortunately some important parts of the article were edited out before it got to the front page and some people will never learn.

https://www.nairaland.com/2920819/made-in-nigeria-cars-not-feasible-2017

Furthermore, some people (as usual) did not read the article, but simply reacted to the headline (for the record, Jalal did not say that it's impossible to make a made in Nigeria car. He actually said quite the opposite (that cars can and have been made in Nigeria), but that it won't be feasible to mass produce cars in Nigeria if we don't increase the tariff on imported vehicles.

The question is, have cars ever been made in Nigeria? Why do some people keep trying to distinguish between a made in Nigeria car and an assembled in Nigeria car?

All car plants are known as assembly plants and this is basically because no car company makes all the components of a car. Most of the components are produced by other companies and the car is then assembled by the car maker. For example, car makers do not usually make the car's radio, tyres and spark plugs. The radio is usually produced by an electronic company, the tyre is usually produced by a tyre company, etc and then these parts are usually assembled by a car company.

For example, some Nigerians felt ashamed when the Malaysian Ambassador to Nigeria presented President Babangida with a Proton Saga (the first made in Malaysia car) at Dodan Barracks in 1989. They said that the Malaysians had to come to Nigeria in the 1960s to learn how to produce high quality palm oil, yet they were now producing cars, while Nigeria could not produce any car. Meanwhile, the truth is that the Proton Saga was based on the Mitsubishi Lancer and had a Mitsubishi Orion engine. Nigerians were ready to accept the fact that the car was made in Malaysia because it was assembled there, yet they were not ready to accept the fact that the Peugeot 504, which had 80% of its components manufactured in Nigeria and which had been assembled in Nigeria since 1975, was a made in Nigeria car.

The Rolls Royce Silver Seraph, which was produced between 1998 and 2002 when Vickers owned Rolls Royce and Bentley, had a BMW engine, yet Nigerians accepted that the car was a British car (nobody called it a German car).

The Bentley Continental R, which was produced between 1991-2003 had a GM 4L80-E transmission (produced by General Motors), yet nobody called it an American car. Everybody knew that it was a British car.

Coaches for Rolls Royce and Bentley cars have been produced by Park Ward and H.J. Mulliner since the beginning of time, yet everybody agrees that the cars were made by Rolls Royce and Bentley.

Mercedes Benz's biggest plant is known as the Sindelfingen Assembly Plant (in Stuttgart), yet nobody says that Mercedes Benz does not make cars. They don't say that Mercedes Benz only assembles cars.

The first generation Volkswagen Sharan was a joint venture between Volkswagen, Ford and Seat. Volkswagen is a German company, Ford is an American company and Seat is a Spanish company that is owned by Volkswage. The minivan was known as the Volkswagen Sharan, the Ford Galaxy or the Seat Alhambra, depending on where it was sold. All three companies contributed parts to the vehicle. The vehicle was assembled at the AutoEuropa Assembly Plant in Palmela, Portugal and it is known as a Portuguese made minivan.

That fact that I have made a tyre, car stereo, coach and body, etc, does not mean that I have made a car. It is not a car until it has been fully assembled.

Therefore, Peugeot Automobile Nigeria (PAN) made cars in Kaduna. Over 80% of the components of the Peugeot 504 that was assembled in Kaduna were made in Nigeria (the glass was made by ISO Glass, Ibadan, the wire harness was made by NOCACO, Kaduna, etc).

Innoson vehicles (IVM Fox, IVM Umu, IVM Uzo, IVM 6490A, IVM G5, IVM Carrier, etc) are made in Nnewi. 70% of the parts are also made in Nigeria (plastic by Innoson Technical and Industrial Co. Ltd, Emene-Enugu and other parts by Ibeto Group, Omatha Holdings, Chicason and Cutix Cables).

The Ashok-Leyland buses that are currently used for the Lagos BRT scheme are made in Lagos (at the former VON plant in Ojo). Nissan Patrols are also made in the Ojo plant.

Does this mean Coca-cola products consumed in Nigeria will be imported and more expensive?

Perhaps it’s time Nigeria consumers enjoy ‘Made in Nigeria’ carbonated drinks - value for money options.
No, Coke will still be made in Nigeria.

Coca-Cola Nigeria Limited does not bottle Coca-Cola in Nigeria. Coca-Cola is bottled by Nigerian Bottling Company PLC, a subsidiary of Leventis.

They make electric vehicles.

naptu2:
13) Roxettes Motors

Roxettes Motors was founded by Architect Kelechi Orji. Its assembly plant is in Enugu and it is building another assembly plant at Obu-Aku City in Abia State.

They assemble the Blaze-X (a pickup truck), Lumen VX-7 (another pickup truck), Aero-U75 Plus (an SUV), Surge X (another SUV) and Volta X (a hatchback) models of electric vehicles.

I am referring to the cars that are listed on the thread as well.

The OP wouldn't have included the cars if he doesn't want us to say anything about it.
It's a post from another thread. The post is simply introducing the company (location, etc). The thread is about public buses for LAMATA, that's why nobody is talking about the price of the vehicle.

It's not because of coup, this happens almost every time that new service chiefs are appointed. Everybody that is their senior must retire.

The reality is that it is not what you say that matters but the feedback of those that have been using these types of Vehicles in Nigeria.

Using these types of vehicles in Nigeria will come with a lot of challenges that is peculiar to our nigerian environment.

I have used both before and still using an EV but in Europe and i can imagine the peculiar challenges anyone will face using these in Nigeria.

It will be more interesting to hear the candid feedback of those with a nigerian personal experience.
You live in Europe, I live in Nigeria, I see them all around me, it's not about what I say or what you say, it's about what's happening every day.

I created many threads about electric and CNG vehicles, but people kept coming to say that they were impossible in Nigeria.

Today many states are deploying electric and CNG buses.

Today many companies are deploying electric and CNG taxis.

Today many large companies like Dangote are deploying CNG and electric vehicles for their operations.

And the people that said that it was impossible have vanished.
