Dr Alban was one of the most famous Nigerian artistes of the 1990s. He is Charly Boy's cousin.

10) Dr Alban ft Michael Rose – Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner (Carolina) (1997).

This song was originally done by legendary Jamaican group Black Uhuru (who also sang Shine Eye Gyal) in 1980. Michael Rose was the lead singer of the group at that time and Dr Alban featured him in his cover of the song. It’s one of my favourite songs by Dr Alban.

Dr Alban teamed up with his cousin, Charlie Boy, almost ten years after releasing this song, to make a Pidgin English version of the song. If you want to have a good laugh, listen to this version, then listen to the Pidgin English version to hear how Dr Alban and Charlie Boy interpreted the song.

CrimeRe: Lagos State Police Command Beefs Up Security In Lekki And Environs by naptu2(op):
Background

I saw around 4 police trucks driving into Wole Olateju Crescent as I went out on Sunday evening. On my way back I saw a police water cannon that was parked at the junction. I was wondering what happened. Now I know.

Wole Olateju Crescent looks like a tourist haven during the day. There are several creek side gardens where you can have a meal, a drink or even a picnic. These gardens come alive with wedding receptions on Saturday afternoons.

There are many jetties where you can have a boat ride or charter boats for events like birthday parties or company functions.

The crescent was one of the take off points for the water regatta during the Fashola era.

Several senior retired admirals also live on the crescent.

It looked like a pleasant place.

However, in 2010 I discovered that it becomes a very different place at night. Prostitutes and drug dealers invade the crescent at night. There were several bars on the crescent that were frequented by very shady looking characters. A friend of mine told me about it and I witnessed it myself when I went to visit him one night.

Then something happened in 2015 or 2016 that completely changed things.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode went to visit someone that lived on the crescent. This was on a Saturday or Sunday night. He was shocked by what he saw. There were drug dealers and prostitutes everywhere. The drug dealers taunted him and asked if he came to buy drugs.

Policemen invaded the crescent the next Monday. Lots of people were arrested. A police unit was stationed on the crescent and they challenged anybody that seemed to be walking aimlessly. Homeless people, people that lived in shacks and those that couldn't explain why they were on the crescent were removed. The operation was in place for at least a year. The bar closed down and the prostitutes and drug dealers left.

Some of the prostitutes and drug dealers relocated to the junction opposite Farm City. They have been there ever since (despite a police raid early this year).

I discovered (a few months ago) that the drug dealers, prostitutes and cultists have returned to Wole Olateju Crescent after the police operation ended some years ago.

From the video of the scene (it's too gruesome for me to post, but you can see it here: https://x.com/akintollgate/status/1962565441445876143?t=CstRlzAX9D6QdjqMqyN_Fw&s=19 ) it looks like the victims were living in one of the shanties in the area (there are makeshift wooden houses that were built in vacant compounds).

Naija Confra @NaijaConfra

LEKKI, LAGOS: Yesterday, Naija Confra reported an attack at Wole Olateju Street, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos State, where 3 people were k!lled. The attack was carried out by Eiye (ACN), and all 3 victims (Warri, Davido, and Young Money) were confirmed members of Aye (NBM). Eiye said it was retaliation for the Aye attack in the Ikate area of Lagos last week.

The incident happened around 4 a.m. on Sunday morning at Wole Olateju Street, where the victims were all staying together.

If you are in Lekki, know the area is no longer safe. Before you think of joining a cult, remember—cult violence and k!ll!ngs are now spreading even into safe and wealthy areas. Stay safe. Reject Cultism.

There's also a second issue.

Policemen were seizing commercial motorcycles in Onosa, Ibeju Lekki much further down the peninsula. Some motorcycle riders staged a protest and it was reported that some of the protesters were killed by policemen. This led to a riot and the Lekki Expressway was blocked.

The commissioner of police has banned policemen from divisions from seizing commercial motorcycles. Only the Lagos State Task Force is allowed to seize motorcycles. The policemen that were involved in the operation have been detained.

How teams qualify for the CAF Women's Champions League.

There are 6 African sub-confederations (West Africa has been divided into 2). Each sub-confederation will provide one club and the 6 clubs are usually joined by the host and the defending champions to create an 8 team Champions League competition. TP Mazembe of DR Congo are defending champions. Algeria will host this year's competition.

The 6 sub-confederations are:

1) Union of North African Football (UNAF)

2) West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone A

3) West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone B

4) Union des Fédérations de Football d'Afrique Centrale (UNIFFAC)

5) Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA)

6) Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA)

Champions League: Akekoromowei fires Bayelsa Queens to WAFU B final

By Fawzi Kehinde
3rd September 2025

Bayelsa Queens came from behind to beat Burkina Faso’s USFA 2-1 on Tuesday to reach the final of the 2025 WAFU B Women’s Champions League qualifiers in Yamoussoukro, Ivory Coast, PUNCH Online reports.

The Prosperity Girls, who won the regional crown in 2022, fell behind inside two minutes when Comfort Yeboah capitalised on a defensive mix-up between Florence Alexander and goalkeeper Monle Omini to lob into an empty net.

Bayelsa responded quickly and levelled in the 15th minute when Shakirat Moshood dispossessed a USFA defender before skipping past three opponents to set up Emem Essien, who headed home the equaliser.

The goal injected confidence into the Nigerians, who began to dictate the tempo with Alaba Olabiyi and Vera Samuel among those pulling the strings in the middle of the park.

The winner arrived in the 62nd minute through Seimeyeha Akekoromowei.

The former Nasarawa Amazons forward pounced on a loose ball and unleashed a thunderous strike from the edge of the box that left the USFA goalkeeper helpless.

Akekoromowei, who had been a standout player in the group stage with decisive goals, once again demonstrated her value and strengthened her reputation as one of the brightest talents in West African women’s football.

She was later named Player of the Match for the second time in the tournament.

The victory means Bayelsa Queens, unbeaten throughout the competition, will face Ivorian champions ASEC Mimosas in Friday’s final after the hosts defeated Ghana’s Police Ladies 4-1 earlier to become the first Ivorian side to reach the WAFU B Women’s Champions League final.

The winner of the regional tournament will secure qualification for the 2025 CAF Women’s Champions League and a potential spot at both the FIFA Women’s Club World Cup and the FIFA Women’s Champions Cup. Bayelsa, who finished third at the continental finals in Morocco three years ago, are now one game away from another appearance on Africa’s biggest stage.

Venezuela is a major oil producer, but it has had bad relations with the United States since Hugo Chavez became president in 1998.

Mr Chavez moved Venezuela to the left and alligned with communist and third world countries like Cuba, North Korea, China and Russia. He often hurled insults at American leaders.

Mr Chavez died in 2013 and Mr Maduro, who was his protege, became president.

There have been many attempts to remove Venezuelan leaders. There was a coup in 2002, which some claim was carried out with the knowledge of the US. There was an invasion by American mercenaries and former Venezuelan soldiers in 2020. There was also a drone attack when President Maduro was speaking at a military parade.

US deploys warships near Venezuela to combat drug threats, sources say

By Steve Holland
August 19, 2025

WASHINGTON, Aug 18 (Reuters) - Three U.S. Aegis guided-missile destroyers will arrive off the coast of Venezuela in the next 36 hours as part of an effort to address threats from Latin American drug cartels, two sources briefed on the matter said on Monday.

President Donald Trump has wanted to use the military to go after Latin American drug gangs that have been designated as global terrorist organizations.

The sources said the ships are the USS Gravely, USS Jason Dunham and the USS Sampson.

A separate U.S. official told Reuters that in total, about 4,000 sailors and Marines are expected to be committed to the Trump administration's efforts in the southern Caribbean region.

That U.S. official, who was speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the additional commitment of military assets in the broader region would include several P-8 spy planes, warships and at least one attack submarine.

The official said the process would be ongoing for several months and the plan was for them to operate in international airspace and international waters.

The naval assets can be used to not just carry out intelligence and surveillance operations, but also as a launching pad for targeted strikes if a decision is made, the official added.

Venezuela's communications ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Without referring to the warships, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said on Monday in an address that Venezuela will "defend our seas, our skies and our lands." He alluded to what he called "the outlandish, bizarre threat of a declining empire."

Trump has made cracking down on drug cartels a central goal of his administration as part of a wider effort to limit migration and secure the U.S. southern border.

The Trump administration in recent months has already deployed at least two warships to help in border security efforts and drug trafficking.

The Trump administration designated Mexico's Sinaloa Cartel and other drug gangs, as well as Venezuelan criminal group Tren de Aragua, as global terrorist organizations in February, as it stepped up immigration enforcement against alleged gang members.

The U.S. military has already been increasing its airborne surveillance of Mexican drug cartels to collect intelligence to determine how to best counter their activities.

US Warships With 1,200 Missiles Targeting Venezuela, Says Maduro

The United States, which accuses Maduro of heading a drug cartel, has announced a deployment of warships to the south Caribbean in what it labeled an anti-drug trafficking operation.

By Emmanuel Monye
Updated September 1, 2025

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said Monday that eight US military vessels with 1,200 missiles were targeting his country, which he declared to be in a state of “maximum readiness to defend” itself.

The United States, which accuses Maduro of heading a drug cartel, has announced a deployment of warships to the south Caribbean in what it labeled an anti-drug trafficking operation. It has made no invasion threat.

Yet Maduro railed at a meeting with international media in Caracas Monday against “the greatest threat that has been seen on our continent in the last 100 years” in the form of “eight military ships with 1,200 missiles and a submarine targeting Venezuela.”

One of the ships, a guided missile cruiser, was spotted going through the Panama Canal from the Pacific to the Caribbean Friday night.

Maduro said that “in response to maximum military pressure, we have declared maximum readiness to defend Venezuela.”

He said more than eight million Venezuelans have enlisted as reservists. Caracas has already announced increased patrols of its territorial waters.

Washington has doubled to $50 million a bounty for the capture of Maduro, whose re-election in 2024 and 2018 were not recognized by the United States or much of the international community amid allegations of fraud and voter oppression.

‘Bloodbath’

Known for his fiery, often anti-US tirades, Maduro on Monday said lines of communication with the United States have broken down, and vowed his country “will never give in to blackmail or threats of any kind.”

At the press conference, he warned that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio sought to lead President Donald Trump “into a bloodbath… with a massacre against the people of Venezuela.”

The US military deployment was welcomed, however, by Guyana’s President Irfaan Ali as “anything to eliminate any threat to our security.”

Georgetown and Caracas are engaged in a dispute over the oil-rich border region of Essequibo, which makes up two-thirds of Guyana’s territory but is also claimed by Venezuela.

The bilateral rhetoric has escalated since ExxonMobil discovered massive oil deposits a decade ago off the coast of Essequibo, which has been administered by Guyana for over 100 years.

‘Armed struggle’

Maduro has been in Trump’s crosshairs since the Republican’s first term from 2017 to 2021.

But Trump’s policy of maximum pressure on Venezuela, including an oil embargo, has failed to dislodge Maduro from power.

Analysts have told AFP the US military deployment was unlikely to result in any invasion or attack, but rather sought to ramp up pressure on Maduro — who has repeatedly accused Trump of attempting to bring about regime change.

Last week, Caracas petitioned the United Nations to intervene in the dispute by demanding “the immediate cessation of the US military deployment in the Caribbean.”

On Monday, Maduro said Venezuela was prepared for “a period of armed struggle in defense of the national territory” in case of an attack.

Trump says 11 killed in US strike on drug-carrying vessel from Venezuela

Bernd Debusmann Jr BBC News, White House

https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/1024/cpsprodpb/3f6f/live/35e913f0-883f-11f0-82f3-013be7d5ef50.jpg
Donald Trump has repeatedly vowed to use the US military, if necessary, to take aim at drug cartels.

President Donald Trump says the US has carried out a strike against a drug-carrying vessel in the southern Caribbean, killing 11 "Narcoterrorists".

He posted on social media that Tuesday's US military operation had targeted members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua.

Trump said the vessel was in international waters and was transporting illegal narcotics bound for the US.

The Trump administration has ratcheted up military and political pressure against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in recent weeks, including through a $50m (£37m) reward for information leading to his arrest on drug-trafficking charges. Maduro has vowed Venezuela would fight any attempted US military intervention.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Tuesday, Trump said that US forces had "shot out" a "drug-carrying boat" in the vicinity of Venezuela.

"A lot of drugs in that boat," he said.

Trump added he had been briefed on the incident by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Dan Caine.

Later the president posted on his Truth Social platform: "Earlier this morning, on my Orders, US Military Forces conducted a kinetic strike against positively identified Tren de Aragua Narcoterrorists in the SOUTHCOM area of responsibility."

He added: "The strike resulted in 11 terrorists killed in action. No US Forces were harmed in this strike. Please let this serve as notice to anybody even thinking about bringing drugs into the United States of America. BEWARE!"

His post was accompanied by a grainy aerial video showing a motor boat speeding across choppy waters before it bursts into flames.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a post on X that "today the US military conducted a lethal strike in the southern Carribean against a drug vessel which had departed from Venezuela and was being operated by a designated narco-terrorist organisation".

It is so far unclear what drugs the vessel was believed to have been carrying.

Since returning to the White House in January, the Trump administration has designated several drug-trafficking organisations and criminal groups in Mexico and elsewhere in Latin America as terrorist organisations.

Among them are Tren de Aragua and another Venezuelan group the "Cartel of the Suns", which US authorities allege is headed by President Maduro and other high-ranking government officials, some drawn from the country's military or intelligence services.

The US military has moved to bolster its forces in the southern Caribbean over the last two months, including through the deployment of additional naval vessels and thousands of US Marines and sailors.

The Trump administration has repeatedly signalled a willingness to use force to stem the flow of drugs into the US.

"There's more where that came from," Trump said of the strike on the vessel.

Venezuela's government has reacted angrily to the deployments.

On Monday, for example, Maduro vowed to "declare a republic in arms" if the US attacked, adding that the American deployments are "the greatest threat that has been seen on our continent in the last 100 years".
