The Independence Bridge is owned by the Federal Government and this is a Federal Government project, but the Lagos State Government is assisting with the management of the situation (traffic control, information, etc).

The situation is much better today (even better than usual), with LASTMA and Lagos State Task Force officials on the road to ensure that traffic flows freely.

naptu2:
The minister of works, Engineer Dave Umahi, said that President Tinubu ordered him to come to Lagos and resolve the issues caused by the closure of the Independence Bridge. He said that the president watched what happened on TV and he wasn't happy, so he ordered him to come to Lagos to solve the problem.

He commended Governor Sanwo-Olu, who was there earlier. He said that Lagos State officials have been able to clear the gridlock.

He said that he is aware of the very serious issues affecting the bridge (the wall has collapsed) and that he had designed a solution.

However, he said that he was not informed before the bridge was closed. He said that the federal controller of works in Lagos took the decision to close the bridge without informing him. He said that, as minister, he should have been informed before the bridge was closed, but she took the decision on her own.

This morning, I arrived at the Independence Bridge, Bonny Camp, to personally assess the ongoing repair work being carried out by the Federal Ministry of Works.

I sincerely apologise to all Lagosians for the severe traffic congestion experienced yesterday. I understand the frustration, delays, and disruption this has caused in your daily lives. As someone who also moves through this city, I feel your pain, and we do not take your patience and resilience for granted.

The decision to fix the Independence Bridge was not made overnight. This repair has been in the works for over three years, carefully planned to avert a potential disaster. The structural integrity of the bridge had deteriorated, and delaying this intervention any further would have put lives at risk.

While this repair is necessary for the safety of all, I acknowledge the burden it has placed on commuters. We are working closely with all relevant agencies to improve traffic management, and find immediate solutions to ease the congestion.

I assure you that we are not just watching from the sidelines; we have deployed additional traffic monitoring officials and security personnel to ensure traffic flows freely.

I also want to urge businesses and organisations across Lagos to explore flexible work arrangements, including remote work and hybrid models. A temporary shift in work culture can go a long way in reducing traffic pressure and supporting our collective wellbeing.

Let us embrace innovative solutions that keep our city moving while we carry out critical infrastructure repairs. Together, we can build a more resilient, responsive, and liveable Lagos.

Lagosians, I ask for your continued patience and cooperation. Your safety remains our priority, and we are committed to ensuring that our city remains not only a hub of progress but also a place where infrastructure serves the people effectively.

The governor said that a part of the base of the bridge has eroded and is sitting on nothing and it can collapse at any time.

The contractor has been working on the base in the past 3 years, to stabilise it, but they also need to work on the surface to avert disaster.

Carl90 is still trying to get my attention, isn't that funny?

He thinks that I will read anything he posts after the rubbish he has been posting since yesterday.

Someone who thinks that, "Huge traffic jams today" means that there were traffic jams in every part of Lagos.

Someone that thinks that Lekki is an island.

Why should I read anything he writes? I don't want to pollute my mind and I don't have time to waste. I'm never going to read his posts again.

Geographically ,you are correct .
However ,you should know that ,as a Lagosian ,you are either staying on the mainland or on the Island .
Where do those that stay at Lekki fall under ?
Hahahahahaha.

Carl90 does not know the difference between a peninsula and an island. He does not know the difference between the mainland and the island. He thinks that Lekki (which I have always known, since the 1970s, that it is on the mainland) is on the island and he still wants me to engage him.

I bet that he doesn't know why Victoria Island is called an island.

I am done with you. Goodbye.

In China, what they do is to restrict the number of private vehicles on the road using an alphabetical letter structure taken from number plates.
That's what they did in Nigeria in the past (it's called Odd and Even number), but Nigerians complained and invented methods of beating the system.

Works like that should be carried out overnight or on Sundays. That's how it's done in a saner clime. Construction works are done when roads are likely to be less busy
It depends on the type of construction work. If they only work at night, how will motorists use the road during the day if it has no surface?

Besides, the idea that construction work does not cause this type of traffic jams in developed countries is simply not true. Have you heard of the Great Traffic Jam of China?
