Youngsage:Not directly. Domino Supermarket is different from Dominos Pizza. I should have posted a photo of their logos, so you'll see that they are different. However, I recently noticed something very interesting. One of the former Domino Stores at Sabo, Yaba has been rented out to Domino's Pizza. |

FAMILY Ben Murray-Bruce's father, William Mullighan Murray-Bruce, died on March 9, 1986. He had worked for UAC and the Murray-Bruce family was close to other famous UAC families like the Abebes and the Shonekans. His mother, Margaret Murray-Bruce, passed away on February 1st, 2022. His wife, Evelyn Murray-Bruce (nee Hargett) passed away on March 20th, 2020. They had 3 children together, Jonathan, Jasmine and Jared. Ben Murray-Bruce also has a son, Cody, with Tina Vukor-Quarshie. Ben Bruce's father ran Domino Supermarkets after retiring from Kingsway/UAC. Ben's siblings continued to run Domino Supermarkets after his death. A children's section, called Small World, was added in the 1980s and it sold toys, children's books, clothes, etc. They built a mall, called the E Center, in Yaba, not far from the old Domino Supermarket. It houses the Ozone Cinemas and other stores and offices. The Domino Group is run by Michael Murray-Bruce, William Murray-Bruce, Joy Jonah (nee Murray-Bruce), Philomena Hammond (nee Murray-Bruce) and Billy Murray-Bruce. GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS President Olusegun Obasanjo appointed Ben Murray-Bruce to the position of Director General of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) in 1999. He served in that position till 2003. As DG of the NTA, he dedicated a lot of time and resources to establishing NTA stations in cities and towns that did not previously have an NTA station. I wasn't happy about the fact that he closed down NTA Channel 7, Lagos, but he said that there were too many NTA stations in Lagos (3) and that the resources were better used in other states and cities that did not have a single NTA station. He tried to modernise the NTA by changing its logo and introducing new and interesting programmes like AM Express. He also tried to preserve Nigerian history by creating a documentary about the Civil War and all the major actors in the war were interviewed in that documentary. Ben Murray-Bruce has also served as Chairman of the Board of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Member of the Board of National Arts Theatre, Nigerian Film Corporation, Federal Films Censors Board, National Film Distribution Company and Nigerian Anti- Piracy Action Committee. He was elected senator representing Bayelsa East on the platform of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in 2015. He served in that position till 2019. As senator he advocated that Nigeria should ban cars with internal combustion engines and adopt electric vehicles. He donated his wardrobe allowance to Osun workers who had not been paid their full salary. However, a youth group from his constituency accused him of neglecting issues that affected his constituents and focusing on national issues. He was advised to step down from the 2019 senatorial primary. Photo 1) Senator Ben Murray-Bruce Photo 2) Stella Murray-Bruce with Kamala Harris (compare this photo with the photos from 1984). RHYTHM FM The Silverbird Group went into the radio business in 1997 when they opened a radio station called Rhythm 93.7 at the Lekki Beach in Lagos. The station aided the current boom in Nigerian music by playing a lot of Nigerian songs and dedicating time slots to solely Nigerian songs. This was at a time that most radio stations player mainly foreign songs. The radio stations slogan was "More music, less talk". Jacob Akinyemi Johnson had been one of the youngest and most popular broadcasters on Radio Nigeria 2 AM/FM Stereo from 1979 till 1995 and he became the first general manager of Rhythm FM. The station also boosted the careers of many broadcasters like rapper Eldee, IK "Wild Child" Osakioduwa, Onome "Big Time" Oyaide, Naphtali Tope Brown, Adeola Phoenix Osinuga (nee Ogunrinola), Ifeoma "Omalicha" Isede, Kemi "Kemistry" Olisa, etc. Rhythm FM expanded by establishing radio stations in Abuja, Port-Harcourt, Yenagoa, Benin, Jos, Awka, etc. Photo 1) Rhythm FM logo. TELEVISION DISTRIBUTION Only the Federal and state governments were allowed to own radio and television broadcast stations in Nigeria before 1993. However, there were many independent radio and television production companies. These companies operated based on several models. Some of them produced programmes, sought advertisers and bought airtime on the NTA or state TV stations. Some of the companies also sought advertisers and bought airtime on TV and radio, but they showed foreign made programmes. Some companies bought the rights to international events like the World Cup, then they sought advertisers and teamed up with the NTA to show the event to Nigerians. The Silverbird Group bought the rights to many foreign programmes, then they teamed up with advertisers to buy airtime on the NTA and to show the programmes to Nigerians in the 1980s and 1990s. They bought the rights to the Cosby Show, A Different World and other American situation comedies and showed them on NTA2 Channel 5 in the late 1980s. They teamed up with UAC to show a movie every Friday night at 10pm in the late 1980s and early 1990s. At various times they showed WWF wrestling and NBA basketball on the NTA in the late 1980s and 1990s. Cadbury's Breakfast Television This was probably Silverbird's biggest TV distribution deal. TV stations in Nigeria usually began transmitting at 9am on Saturdays and Sundays in the 1980s and early 1990s. A few state stations had special programmes at 7am, but the most common start time was 9am. Silverbird bought a two-hour time block from 7am till 9am on Saturday mornings and got Cadbury to be its title sponsor. They showed American cartoons and sitcoms during this period and on the last Saturday of the month (which was environmental sanitation curfew in most states) they showed a movie. Some of the programmes that were shown on Cadbury's Breakfast Television included: Cartoons Spiderman And His Amazing Friends Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Biker Mice From Mars Freakazoid Animaniacs Pinky & The Brain Dungeons & Dragons X-Men Justice League Batman: The Animated Series Superman: The Animated Series Sitcoms Rags To Riches George Living Single Out All Night The Jamie Foxx Show Getting Personal The Parenthood In The House Suddenly Susan Sparks On Our Own Family Matters Nick Freno: Licensed Teacher Cadbury's Breakfast Television was aired from 1993 till 2004. BEAUTY PAGEANTS Daily Times Group (Nigeria's biggest newspaper group at the time) created the Miss Nigeria beauty pageant in 1957. They sent entries into the Miss Universe competition. However, in 1964, Nigeria's representative at the Miss Universe competition, Edna Parks, fainted on stage after the semi-final round because she was not selected for the final. She had to be carried off stage and she kept crying for two hours after she was carried off the stage, so she was taken to the hospital, given sedatives and kept overnight for observation. Daily Times/Miss Nigeria stopped sending contestants to the Miss Universe pageant after that incident. They therefore lost the right to send entries to the pageant. The Silverbird Group got the right to send contestants to Miss Universe and they created the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant in 1983. Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria Silverbird held the first ever Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria pageant in 1986 and it quickly became a major event on the Nigerian social calendar. The event was usually held at the National Theater, Lagos and the contestants usually paraded down Awolowo Road, Ikoyi in the Silverbird limousine (a 6-door Cadillac) on the Friday night before the show. They usually appeared on Morning Ride on NTA2 Channel 5 on the morning of the show. Lynda Chuba-Ikpeazu (a student that had just returned from the United States) became the first ever Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria (her father, Justice Chuba Ikpeazu, was a former judge and NFA chairman). Omasan Buwa won the 1987 edition, Bianca Onoh won the 1988 edition, but relinquished the crown when rumours spread of her relationship with Chief Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, Regina Askia, the first runner up, took over the crown. Sabina Umeh won the title in 1990 and Nike Oshinowo won it in 1991. Some winners of the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria (MBGN) pageant have gone on to achieve great success after their reign. Lynda Chuba-Ikpeazu served as a member of the House of Representatives from 1999 till 2003, 2007 till 2011 and 2019 till 2023. Bianca Onoh (the daughter of the former governor of Anambra State, Chief Christian Onoh) married Chief Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, served as presidential adviser on diaspora affairs to President Goodluck Jonathan, served as Nigeria's high commissioner to Ghana and also served as Nigeria's ambassador to Spain. She is currently the minister of state for foreign affairs. naptu2:Regina Askia worked as a model and acted in television adverts before gaining major success as a Nollywood actress. Video: Regina Askia representing Nigeria at the Miss International Beauty Pageant in Osaka, Japan in 1990. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZoUNd5_5fPQ?si=qDkJb2UiM1xpthC2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6g2c_AdGFQ?si=bnUBIuzatepDoPQg Omasan Buwa worked as a makeup artist for clients like Naomi Campbell and Mary J. Blige. She hosted TV shows in Nigeria and runs an NGO which mentors young people. Nike Oshinowo acted in advertisements on Nigerian TV, established a cosmetics company and bought over the Miss Nigeria pageant from the Daily Times Group. Agbani Darego won the Miss World pageant and had a successful modelling career. Ben Murray-Bruce was the MC of the pageant from 1986 till the late 2000s when his younger brother, Guy Murray-Bruce and other people like IK Osakioduwa, took over the role. One of the funniest things that I watched on the show was what I call the Elephant and Eagle Lady. Nigeria Airways had been a reliable airline, but it began having problems in the late 1980s. The airline's logo was an elephant that had wings and some people blamed the logo for the problems, because everybody knows that elephants don't fly. Therefore, Nigeria Airways changed its logo from an elephant to an eagle. One of the contestants was an air hostess with Nigeria Airways and, during the interview segment, Ben Murray-Bruce asked her to tell the audience about Nigeria Airways. She said (in a high pitch voice and with a fake American accent) "Well you know before we used to fly helephant, but now we fly heagle". Everybody bust out laughing. That interview was shown at future Most Beautiful Girl contests as part of a humour reel. Miss Intercontinental naptu2:The show also had its funny moment. They usually had an interpreter for contestants that did not speak English. Some of the interpreters came from the embassies of the contestants and Silverbird provided some of the interpreters. One of the contestants requested for an interpreter because her English wasn't so good. The interpreter came and was interpreting what she said when she suddenly stopped him and said, "No, I no say that. That's not what I said". That interview was also shown in subsequent editions as part of a humour reel. The pageants were usually held at the National Theater in Lagos, which was the regular venue for music concerts, award shows, etc. but the theater developed problems in the mid-1990s. The central air-conditioning unit broke down and it became common to see guests at events in the theater fanning themselves furiously because or the incredible heat in the auditorium. Silverbird therefore moved its shows to the Eko Hotel. Miss World 2002 Agbani Darego was the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria 2001. She became the first black African to win the Miss World contest when she won the 2001 edition in Sun City, South Africa. Silverbird therefore won the rights to host the 2002 edition of the the Miss World pageant. They decided to stage the pageant in Abuja and I was wondering why. Some Islamic clerics protested against the decision to stage the pageant in Abuja during Ramadan. They wrote to the government and demanded that the pageant should be cancelled. A young journalist, Isioma Daniel, who worked with Thisday Newspapers, wrote an article about the controversy and she made comments that Muslims considered to be blasphemous. This led to a massive riot in Abuja and other parts of the North while many of the contestants were already in Abuja. The Miss World Organisation decided to move the event to London, because of fears about the safety of the contestants. I was wondering why Silverbird decided to hold the event in Abuja in the first place. They had staged many Miss Intercontinental and other shows in Lagos in the 1980s and 1990s without any problems. Mister Nigeria Various organisations have staged Mr Nigeria contests in the past, but Silverbird began organising the contests in 2007. Bryan Okwara won the first edition and he was a semi-finalist at the 2007 Mister World contest. Kenneth Okolie won the 2010 edition and he was the second runner-up at the 2010 Mister World contest. Deji Bakare won the 2012 edition. Emmanuel Ikubuese won the 2014 edition and he was the first runner-up at the 2014 Mister World contest. He was also crowned Mister World Fashion and Style 2014. Michael Amilo won the 2016 edition. Nelson Enwerem won the 2019 edition and was a semi-finalist at the 2019 Mister World contest. And Michael Chibukem won the 2024 edition. Return of Miss Universe Nigeria Silverbird initially staged the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant in 1983 and Omololu Ojehomon won it. The pageant was not staged again till 2023. Initially the winner of the MBGN contested in Miss World, Miss Universe and Miss Intercontinental pageants. However, the roles were split in the 2000s. The winner of the MBGN took part in the Miss World pageant and she was called MBGN World, the second runner-up took part in the Miss Universe pageant and she was called MBGN Universe, etc. Silverbird brought back the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant in 2023 and Ugochi Mitchell Ihezue won it. In 2024 a Nigerian-South African, Chidimma Onwe Vanessa Adetshina took part in the Miss South Africa pageant, but there was a backlash against her because some South Africans said that she did not have a South African name. She had to withdraw from the pageant. Silverbird invited her to take part in the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant and she won. She represented Nigeria at the 2024 Miss Universe pageant in Mexico and she was the first runner-up and was crowned Miss Universe Africa and Oceania 2024. 1) Ben Bruce and Bianca Onoh 2) Bianca Onoh (Miss Africa) 3) Agbani Darego (Miss World) 4) Ben Bruce and Chidimma Adetshina

BEN BRUCE RECORDS Ben Murray-Bruce established Ben Bruce Records in 1984, when he was 28 years old. He got American record producer Greg Wright (who previously worked for SOLAR Records and produced songs for Shalamar) to recreate his magic in Nigeria. He got legendary Nigerian TV and music video producer, Philip Trimnell (who was Ben Bruce's junior at St Gregory's College) to produce the music videos and some tracks. He got PatSol (Patrick Solomon), who was a music producer and artiste and was one of Ben Bruce's friends at St Gregory's, to also produce some tracks. Ben Bruce Records released the hit album, Ẹ Jẹ́ Ká Jó (Let's Dance) by Xtasy. Xtasy was a duo, made up of Roy and Stella Murray-Bruce, Ben Bruce's younger siblings. They had two hit songs which had massive airplay on Nigerian radio and TV and in the clubs. These were: Xtasy - E Je Ka Jo (1984) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PX6ZcS0uOGI And Xtasy - Isale Eko (1984) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJQidr9A2FQ Ben Bruce Records also released the album Prisoner of Love by Patsol (Patrick Solomon) and Firegirl by Brakes (Paul and George Wiltshire and Kehinde and Taiwo Ogunyemi) but they didn't do as well (there was an economic crisis which affected the purchasing power of Nigerians). SILVERBIRD CONCERTS Ben Murray-Bruce returned to Nigeria after graduating from university. His father had previously wanted him to work in the family supermarket chain, but Ben Bruce did not think that his future was in selling Bournvita and soap at his father's supermarket. He wanted to go into the entertainment business and his father supported him this time. His father gave him a loan of ₦20,000 (which was a lot of money in 1980) and he used it to set up the Silverbird Group. Ben Bruce created the Silverbird Magazine, which was an entertainment magazine, but it was from the concert business that he got his initial success and fame. He had met Dick Griffey while he was a student in the United States. Griffey was the founder of Sound of Los Angeles Records (SOLAR) and SOLAR had signed some of the biggest new black American musicians of the early 1980s. These singers and musicians were also very popular in Nigeria and Ben Bruce and the Silverbird Group brought some of the most famous acts in the world to Nigeria in the early 1980s. Ben Bruce and Silverbird brought Kool and The Gang, The Whispers, Shalamar, Lakeside, Rafael Cameron, Dynasty, Skyy, Evelyn King, Delegation and other huge American acts to Nigeria. The concerts were held at the National Stadium, Surulere, the National Theater, Iganmu, the University of Lagos, Akoka and the University of Ife. It was the biggest thing on the Nigerian entertainment calendar in the early 1980s. Governor Bola Ige complained that they paid bursary to students for their upkeep, but the students used the money to go and watch Shalamar. It was these concerts that made Ben Murray-Bruce and Silverbird a household name in Nigeria. The concerts also brought him some attention in the United States. He was made an executive director of the Black Music Association of America. Other directors of the association included Quincy Jones, Dick Griffey and Stevie Wonder. Death of the concert business Ben Murray-Bruce and his partners in the Black Music Association of America were planning to have a music festival in Nigeria. They planned to bring Michael Jackson and other major stars to perform in the country. After the famine in Ethiopia went viral and led to the Band Aid, USA For Africa and Live Aid campaigns, the idea of the music festival was expanded to include a fund raising campaign in Nigeria. However, Nigeria ran into an economic crisis in 1982 due to the collapse of oil prices. We went from oil boom to oil doom. The crisis severely affected the purchasing power of Nigerians (and their ability to afford concert tickets) and it led to a coup on December 31st, 1983. Ben Murray-Bruce's partners in the US were unable to contact him on December 31st, 1983 because the coupists had disrupted the phone network across Nigeria. The new government imposed foreign currency restrictions in order to make it difficult for corrupt politicians to conceal their loot. This caused problems for the concert business because visiting musicians would need to have some cash on them. Fela Anikulapo-Kuti was arrested and charged with violating the restrictions and currency smuggling. Stevie Wonder called Ben Murray-Bruce and asked him what kind of country would jail their most famous musician simply because he had some foreign currency notes. He wanted assurances about the safety of the musicians in Nigeria. Stevie Wonder also told Ben Murray-Bruce that the musicians would need to pay a courtesy call on the president. Silverbird contacted Dodan Barracks, but the Buhari Administration felt that Nigeria had more important issues to deal with and they were not interested in the concert. There was another coup in August 1985 and once again Stevie Wonder could not get through to Ben Murray-Bruce because the phone network had been shut down. This marked the end of the attempt to bring the stars to Nigeria. Stevie Wonder did not want to be trapped in Nigeria if another coup took place (American tennis legend Arthur Ashe had been trapped in Nigeria during the Dimka Coup and soldiers had come on the tennis court to chase him and his opponent away. The match had to be completed in London). This marked the end of Silverbird's concert business in the 1980s. BENEDICT MURRAY-BRUCE OON (born February 18th, 1956). Senator Ben Murray-Bruce was born on February 18th, 1956 to Mullighan and Margaret Murray-Bruce. Both his parents were mixed race (half Nigerian, from Akassa in Bayelsa State and half European). Parents Ben Bruce's father, William Mullighan Murray-Bruce was an executive with the United African Company (UAC). UAC is a successor of the Royal Niger Company and it was the biggest non-oil company in Nigeria up till the early 1990s. UAC had many subsidiaries and Mullighan Murray-Bruce worked for Kingsway Stores, the largest chain of chemists, supermarkets and malls in Nigeria at the time. The children were born in different cities across Nigeria because Mullighan Murray-Bruce was often transfered from city to city. Upon retirement from Kingsway, he was given some of the underperforming branches as part of his retirement benefit and he founded his own supermarket chain, Domino Stores, using those branches. Education Ben Murray-Bruce attended Our Lady of Apostles Private Primary School, Yaba, Lagos from 1962 till 1968. He attended St Gregory's College, Ikoyi, Lagos for his secondary education from 1969 till 1973. He was the Senior Prefect at St Gregory's College and here his organisational ability and interest in the entertainment industry shone through. As Senior Prefect, Ben Murray-Bruce was also Chairman of the Harvest Planning Committee and they raised a record amount of ₦400, which was a lot of money in 1973. The school chaplain, Reverend Father James O'Connel and Ben Murray-Bruce invested the money in musical equipment for the school band. It paid off hugely. A junior student Melvin Ukachi had approached Ben and asked if he could do some practice with the band. Ben responded in the affirmative. Ukachi and his group later known as Ofege used the school band to wax their first album which sold over one million copies. Ofege released songs that were well played all over Nigeria and indeed all over Africa and they did this while they were still secondary school students! Ben Murray-Bruce was interested in entertainment from an early age, but his father didn't always approve of this. He said that his father came into his room one day and saw him dancing and threatened to break his legs if he ever caught him dancing like that again. He said One time I was dancing and my father saw me dancing. He said, “If I ever catch you dancing, you’ll never use those legs again.”He attended Simpson College, Indianola Iowa (1975 – 1976); Iowa State University (1976 – 1977); and University of Southern California (1977 – 1979), where he received a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Marketing. He said that he easily got bored and he often changed schools whenever he got bored. He received his big break in the entertainment industry by accident when he met Louis Smallwood while he was a student at the University of Southern California. He was sitting at home in California one day when there was a knock on the door. He opened the door and discovered that the person that knocked had gotten the wrong address. However, they had an interesting conversation and Ben Bruce asked the man what he did for a living. The man was a teacher of child stars. The law said that anyone under the age of 16 had to be educated, but there were child stars like Todd Bridges, Michael Jackson and Gary Coleman who could not attend school because of fame or their schedule. Louis Smallwood taught them at home or at the location where they were working. Mr Smallwood invited Ben Bruce to the set of Sanford and Son, where he was working at that time. Ben Murray-Bruce got to know very many famous stars in the US entertainment scene of the 1970s through his friendship with Mr Smallwood. He became friends with Joe Jackson (Michael Jackson's father), Dick Griffey (founder of SOLAR Records), Stevie Wonder, Muhammad Ali and other stars.
