I took these pictures this morning (as I said, the place is just a stone's throw from my house. How can somebody that doesn't live here try to tell me about this place? ).
You can see the plaque that was unveiled yesterday and you can see Banex Plaza behind it. There were banners and buntings all over this place yesterday. Anybody that knows this place knows that it is near the Expressway junction.
These are more photos of the plaque.
Ignore liars.
That road was resurfaced for free by LCC and Hitech in 2010/2011 ahead of the beginning of tolling. This was during the Fashola era.
It was not worked on again till mid-2021 when the Sanwo-Olu Administration began dualising it.
8 years ago is 2017, the road was not under construction in 2017. Ignore people that are just trying to push an agenda.
Meanwhile, BRT buses have started bringing the fun runners to Lekki for the marathon and the authorities have blocked the expressway with large trucks.
I'm going to go back to watch the marathon after I eat breakfast.
naptu2: I hope this is the most recent version of the thread.
Dualisation
Pictures 1 & 2) They are dualising Akiogun Road (aka Oniru New Market Road).
Drainage
Pictures 3 & 4) At long last they are also constructing a proper drainage system beside the road. The road was resurfaced c2011 by LCC & Hitech as part of their corporate social responsibility after expanding and tolling the expressway and I don't know why they did not construct a proper drainage system at that time. I pitied pedestrians who had to walk down that road in the Rainy Season because there were always large puddles beside the road. Now it looks like things will be better for them.
The road serves as an alternative to the Lekki Epe Expressway.
However, there's still a big problem that needs to be addressed and that's the drainage system that runs across right before the Oniru Palace Road. The drain is covered with concrete slabs and these slabs break and fail quite often, especially because of the fact that heavy vehicles like tankers and trailer trucks often use the road in order to avoid paying tolls on the expressway.
They need to find a better way to cover the drain.
At long last they are going to build a proper fire station.
The number of fire stations in Lagos have been inadequate for decades. The Fashola Administration addressed this issue by opening many new fire stations in the late 2000s and early 2010s. However, some of these stations (e.g. the Lekki and Onikan Stations) were basically temporary or make shift facilities.
You can see a red shed and a small bungalow in the third picture below. That was the fire station that was set up by the Fashola Administration, but now the government is planning to build a more befitting station.
The Lekki Phase 1 Second Gate is at Adewunmi Adebimpe Street, but the end of that road was previously just a bushy area. People who came into the estate through that gate and who wanted to go further into the estate had to use Ogungbe Crescent/Providence Road to reach Bisola Durosinmi-Etti Drive and this often caused an incredible traffic jam at the junction of the two streets. That traffic jam sometimes stretched all the way to the Expressway.
Alternatively, people could come into the Estate through Hakeem Dickson Road, but the junction between Hakeem Dickson and Bisola Durosinmi-Etti Drive was another area that was plagued by massive traffic jams.
The solution to the traffic jams was to simply clear the bush at the end of Adewunmi Adebimpe Street and to build a bridge over the canal, but that was never done until now.
This is the new junction between Adewunmi Adebimpe Street and Bisola Durosinmi-Etti Drive
I already know that Ikoyi is like a giant construction site, but check out what's happening in Lekki. I haven't been to the end of Fola Osibo/Emma Abimbola Cole Street in over 2 years, so I went there this morning and they are finally fixing that part of the road. That is a very important road.
This evening I explored Akiogun Road and discovered that they are dualizing it. Do you know how big that is? That's huge!
The road commissioning was done near the junction with Lekki Expressway (not far from the fire station). The plaque is still there! I will go and take a picture of the plaque tomorrow (it's just walking distance from my house).
Dualisation of that road only started around 3 years ago. It's not 8 years.
Today, we officially commissioned two projects under the LASG Infrastructure Project. This initiative is a significant step towards improving the quality of life for our citizens and enhancing the overall transportation network within our city.
The first commissioning is the Abudu Smith Street in Victoria Island. Victoria Island is a hub of business and tourism, and improving this road will facilitate smoother traffic flow, reducing congestion and making it easier for residents and visitors alike to navigate
Additionally, we commissioned the alternative route via Oniru Road, which leads directly to the Admiralty Circle and the Toll Plaza in Lekki in Eti-Osa Local Government Area.
These infrastructure improvements are part of our administration’s commitment to building a world-class city that meets the needs of its residents. Investing in our infrastructure is crucial for promoting economic growth, enhancing mobility, and ensuring a better quality of life for all Lagosians.
Together, we will continue to work to create a functional, prosperous, and sustainable Lagos for future generations.
FLASH: Governor of Lagos State, Mr @jidesanwoolu has announced that The Green Line Rail Project will start this year, working with MOfi - Ministry of Finance Incorporated.
Mr Governor says this will be a ‘game changer’ for the Lekki Epe Axis, he also announced that the current Road will be expanded and residents should work with Government all through the period.
Mr Governor announced this today at the commissioning of the newly reconstructed Chief Yesufu Abiodun Oniru/Akiogun Road—an alternative route to the Admiralty Circle Toll Plaza—Lekki, in Eti-Osa Local Government Area.
The road was previously a single carriageway road (2 lanes), but it has now been expanded into a dual carriageway road (4 lanes).

LAGOS ROAD PROJECTS ✅
Governor of Lagos State, Mr @jidesanwoolu today commissioned the newly rehabilitated Chief Yesufu Abiodun Oniru/Akiogun Road—an alternative route to the Admiralty Circle Toll Plaza—Lekki, Eti-Osa Local Government Area.
This provides a crucial alternative route that will significantly decongest traffic at the Lekki Epe Toll Plaza, ensuring smoother and more efficient movement for commuters.
This project also aligns with the iconic Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road, this newly commissioned project makes it a major part of the state's long-term transportation strategy.
The benefits of this road rehabilitation are multifaceted. Beyond significantly reducing travel time and improving road safety, it will enhance the overall commuting experience while positively impacting property values and economic activities within this corridor.
