I was pretty late going to the bridge this morning. It was 5 minutes to 5am and I was almost ready to head out when I heard
GBA GBOOM GUN KINKILI
It sounded like someone had dropped a heavy load from a great height. I had a little suspicion about the cause of the noise. I heard people shouting and a girl repeatedly screaming immediately afterwards. That heightened my suspicion. Then, a minute later, there were many loud and persistent honking of car horns. Now I was certain about the cause of the noise.
I went out and took a detour to see the accident scene. The back of a black Toyota Corolla had been completely smashed to bits. A red corolla was also involved, but I couldn't see the damage at that time. There was a small crowd some distance away. They were standing around a man that was lying on the median. He wasn't moving at all.
I went back to the bridge and called 112. They said that they had already been informed about the accident and had sent LASAMBUS to the scene.
I went back to the scene after my workout (an hour and 30 minutes later).
A man walked past me and kept muttering to himself, "If you want to drink, stay in your house and drink. If you want to drink, stay in your house and drink".
I saw the smashed black Toyota and I saw the damage on the red Toyota (it wasn't much). Now, for the first time, I saw the third car. Apparently, it was a Honda that rammed into the rear of the black Toyota, which made the black Toyota hit the red Toyota.
The engine of the black Honda was completely smashed and one of its side mirrors was dangling. A policeman was inspecting the accident scene. A girl was kneeling and praying fervently beside the black Honda.
This kind of thing has been a common sight on Admiralty Way in the past 6 years (since that notorious night club was opened). It's reduced since the night club closed, but obviously the problem hasn't gone away.
naptu2: Yes! Absolutely I have. I did so just last week.
c1982 I called 199 when my neighbours alerted me that there was a fire at NEPA Building on Awolowo Road. They answered and the Fire Service put out the fire.
c2016 I called 112 when a building near my brother's house was on fire. The operator told me that they've already gotten the information and that the Fire Service was on its way. The Fire Service arrived around 7 minutes later.
I heard a loud crash around 5am two Saturdays ago when I was getting ready to go jogging. Just as I thought, a probably drunk driver had crashed into two other cars. I went pass the accident scene on my way to the Lekki-Ikoyi Bridge and I saw a guy on the floor. It looked like he was unconscious. I called 112 as soon as I got to the bridge and they said that they had already gotten the information and LASAMBUS was on its way. I passed by the scene an hour later on my way back home and the man was gone and there were policemen on the scene.
It works.
I had already memorised 199 when I was still in nursery school. I looked at that page on the P&T telephone directory at least once a week. Memorise it. It might save your life one day.
We had 199 back when P&T and Nitel were still operating. Chaos ensued when private telecoms operators arrived and Nitel went comatose. Every telecoms company had its own number and many states also had their own numbers. Lagos State had 112 and 777 as emergency numbers. Finally the NCC has developed a project to have a single 3 digit emergency number for the whole of Nigeria and the number is 112.
You can see 112 listed as one of the numbers in my second post (112 is the general emergency number, but some agencies still have their own specific numbers).
naptu2: Telephone service was provided by P&T (Posts And Telecoms) which became Nitel in 1985. There were area codes - Ikoyi was 68, Victoria Island was 61, Lagos Island was 62, Festac was 88, Ikeja was 97, etc.
You had to wait for a dialling tone before you could make a call. We were lucky, the government paid our phone bill.
There were huge telephone books (1978, 1979, 1982 and 1983) and you could find people's phone numbers with the telephone books.
Some short codes were 199 (emergency), 198 (speaking clock), but I can't remember what the ring back short code was.
You had to book international calls with the operator.
naptu2: We used to have a single national three digit emergency number back when Nitel was the only service provider (the number was 199).
The system became disorganised when private operators were given licenses and Nitel eventually collapsed. Each service provider and state had its own emergency number. The NCC is trying to reintroduce a single national three digit emergency number.
Bagged a brace 🎯 and overflowing with gratitude for the outcome. Huge shoutout to my incredible teammates and the unwavering home support. Costa Adeje, your love fuels our fire! 🔥🙏🏾💙🤍 #MG24 #UDGTenerife

The Nigeria international was the difference maker on Sunday as the José Ángel Herrera-led side claimed a historic win over their more illustrious rivals
Gift Monday was the star of the show, scoring two goals in three second-half minutes to power UDG Tenerife to a memorable 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid.
Four Super Falcons stars featured in the encounter, with Esther Okoronkwo featuring alongside Monday in the home team’s lineup, while Rinsola Babajide came on for Okoronkwo after the break.
After scoring for Nigeria in both games against Ethiopia last month, Rasheedat Ajibade started on the bench for Atletico Madrid as they sought to make it 18 games without a defeat against Tenerife.
Monday, however, had other ideas, and shortly after the halftime break, the youngster fired Tensrife in front with a strong run and smart left-footed finish.
Three minutes later, Monday made it two-nil to the home side as she broke past the visitors’ defence to slam the ball into the net for a goal similar to the first.
Atletico Madrid sent Ajibade onto the pitch a minute later as they sought an instant response.
Although Lucía Moral scored a consolation goal for the Madrid-based club, they could not muster the crucial second, allowing Tenerife to claim their first-ever win in 18 matchups between the two teams.
With the win, Tenerife rose to sixth on the league table, two spots below Atletico Madrid in fourth.
People of God, how can emmyN say that I said that the government asked for a presidential yacht when I posted this article that shows that it was the Navy that asked for a presidential yacht and none was bought? Are these people OK?
I don't think these are people that should be taken seriously and quite frankly, I have wasted enough time on them.
The whole point of my thread was to show that it was the Navy that kept asking for a yacht, not the government, to show why the Navy said it needed a yacht and to show why we don't need one, but this guy is saying that I said that it was the government that wanted one. Is reading so hard??

freegaza: Navy to buy N3.3bn presidential yatch for Jonathan
Written by Francis Okeke & Turaki A. Hassan Tuesday, 29 June 2010 04:39
If the Naval headquarters has its way, President Goodluck Jonathan will cruise in a N3.3bn Presidential Yatch in an “International Sea Exercise and Presidential Fleet Review for Nigeria’s 50th Independence Anniversary.”
Daily Trust gathered from impeccable sources in Abuja yesterday that the request forwarded to the Minister of Defence Adetokunbo Kayode from the office of the Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Ishaya Iko Ibrahim seeks to spend N4 billion both for the purchase of the Presidential Yatch and N16m as operational costs for the participation of NN Augusta Helicopters, Defender and Nightcat Interceptor boats in the anniversary celebration.
The proposal has been passed to the Nigeria at 50 anniversary committee in the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, sources close to the secretariat told Daily Trust yesterday.
The source said about 15 ships are expected to participate in the exercise with a proposal to repair six non-operation ships including the NNS Aradu which is the pride of the Nigerian Navy.
Similarly, the Naval headquarters is proposing to spend N17m for media coverage of the event while N3 million would be expended on the supply and installation of long and short range communication equipment and split unit air conditioners.
Former President Shehu Shagari is the last known Nigerian leader to have participated in a Presidential Fleet Review to mark Nigeria’s Independence anniversary in 1981.
Checks on the Internet last night showed that the United Kingdom has had 83 royal yachts since the restoration of King Charles II in 1660.
Charles II had 25 Royal Yachts, while five were simultaneously in service in 1831. Since the decommissioning of Britannia in 1997 the Queen no longer has a royal yacht and in Finland the president has a small private yacht.
Yachts are different from working ships mainly by their leisure purpose, and it was not until the rise of the steamboat and other types of powerboat that sailing vessels in general came to be perceived as luxury, or recreational vessels. Later the term came to encompass motor boats for primarily private pleasure purposes as well.
emmyN: You didn't state it that Jonathan rejected the proposal. You ended it with, "the government was roundly criticised". One would think they were the ones championing the idea and had to backtrack when the media raised a ruckus. Your article was either deliberately misleading or dwelled on half-truths.
What kind of nonsense is this? How can anybody think that the government was championing the idea when all through I wrote that the Navy requested for a presidential yacht? Did you actually read the thread?? I EVEN POSTED THE ARTICLE THAT STATED THAT THE NAVY PUT IN A REQUEST TO THE DEFENCE MINISTER AND THIS WAS WHAT CAUSED CONTROVERSY
The whole point of the thread, which I itemised at the beginning was that:
The Nigerian Navy has been asking for a new presidential yacht since Year 2000. The request always causes controversy. These are the reasons why it says it needs a new yacht. These are the reasons why I do not believe that we need a new yacht. These are our previous presidential yachts. The last presidential yacht was decommissioned a long time ago We have had 3 fleet reviews since the last yacht was decommissioned and we haven’t had any problems. These are the alternatives to a presidential yacht.
I didn’t write what the government said in 2006, I didn’t write what the government said in 2010 and I didn’t write what the government said in 2023 because that wasn’t my focus.
How then will you say that I said that the government wanted it when the whole point of the thread was that it was the Navy that has been requesting for a yacht since Year 2000 and it has not gotten one. Who else would have rejected it when President Jonathan used a Shaldag MK II?
What dirty stinking half truth are you talking about? Can you point out anything in the thread that was not true? Are you sure that you can read at all??
It seems like what you guys are after is partisanship, which is not the focus of my thread and I am not going to join you in that nonsense. Anybody with a brain that read my thread would know what it was about.
Ekiti state governor Abiodun Oyebanji has described Lagos as appealing to other states because ‘everybody is interested in the Lagos miracle.’
He spoke when he joined Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to open the new Oyingbo Bridge.
The 717m long bridge is part of the five essential infrastructure rail level crossing of the Red Rail Line.
According to him, the projects speak for what is possible when there is a listening leader in charge.
He said: “Lagos has become a model for infrastructure leadership and Ekiti has a lot to learn from Lagos. Everybody is interested in the Lagos miracle, especially because Governor Sanwo-Olu is a mentor to many of us. I will not be tired of returning to commission more projects.
“I urge Lagosians to treasure this path so they can continue to benefit from it. They must guard jealously everything the progressive government has done because it is a testament to the continued progressive administration.”
Governor Sanwo-Olu noted that the government is investing so much in transportation infrastructure to support commerce and ease movement, ‘especially considering the importance of Oyingbo as a major link between the mainland and the Island’.
He added: “With these overpass bridges, we are providing a permanent solution to the avoidable fatal accidents often recorded at railway crossings. The siting of these infrastructures in this area is strategic and intentional to achieve a seamless integrated intermodal transport system for the people.
“As the rehabilitation of the Third Mainland Bridge starts, this bridge will provide a lot of relief to motorists. I, therefore, appeal to our motorists to exercise patience and cooperate with traffic and law enforcement officers in order to minimize the inconvenience that will be experienced during the period of rehabilitation.”
Test running of the red rail line will be in Q1 2024.
