Ben Murray-Bruce @benmurraybruce

I am excited to see the Federal Government's inauguration of solar-powered electric vehicle charging stations at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). This visionary step resonates deeply with what I have passionately advocated for.

While my earnest attempts to champion such initiatives through legislation were met with resistance in the past, the winds of change have since gathered momentum. Today, we stand at a transformative crossroads, recognizing the imminent necessity of pivoting away from fossil fuels and embracing clean, renewable sources of energy. The forward-thinking leadership shown by the National Automative Design and Development Council (NADDC) is both commendable and essential for ensuring a sustainable future for Nigeria.

To see our esteemed educational institutions actively partaking in this change, not just as passive spectators but as beacons of innovation and research, warms the heart. I have always believed in the power of sustainable technology, and it is heartening to see these ideas coming to fruition.

I commend the Federal Government and all the visionaries involved in bringing this initiative to life. Indeed, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and today, Nigeria is taking giant strides in the right direction. It is my fervent hope that we continue to tread this path, drawing inspiration from today’s achievements and always striving for a brighter, greener tomorrow.

Funny monologue by Sunny Irabor in the 1980s (I can't remember if it was on RN1 or RN2).

There used to be a lot of soldiers, tanks and other armoured vehicles at Broadcasting House, Ikoyi. In fact there was a submachine gun nest beside on of the gates. This was because of all the coups that happened back then (coup plotters usually tried to get Broadcasting House in order to announce their coup and Dodan Barracks was on the other side of the road).

However, the soldiers sometimes harassed Radio Nigeria staff when they were bored. They harassed and even punished those that they thought were late to work.

Sunny Irabor showed up at the gate one day and a soldier accused him of being late. Mr Irabor explained to the soldier that he was not late, but the soldier insisted that he was late. Then he showed the soldier his watch and argued that he was not late, but the soldier shouted, "Shut up! Are you suffering from idiosyncrasy"? This stopped Sunny Irabor completely. How can a person suffer from idiosyncrasy?

(In 1999 President Obasanjo appointed Dr Eddie Iroh as the DG of the FRCN. Eddie Iroh had worked with the NTA in the 1970s and he had his own experience with soldiers. He said that his greatest pleasure came when he ordered the soldiers to pack all their equipment and leave Broadcasting House).

Egbetokun inaugurates police complaints response unit in Lagos

NEWS AGENCY OF NIGERIA
August 23, 2023 9:47 PM

The commissioner said that crime profile of the state was further accentuated by the prevalence of illegal firearms proliferation, and illicit drug abuse and trafficking.

Egbetokun said the purpose of the CRU was to create a conducive platform of interaction between the police and public, particularly on unprofessional conducts of the officers.

The News Agency of Nigeria NAN, reports that the unit will afford members of the public an opportunity to make complaints and seek redress as individuals and groups against police misconducts and human rights abuses.

Egbetokun, who commended the command for complying with his directive, pointed out that the directive was from Section 131 of the police Act of 2020, which gave power to the I-GP to establish such unit in all states.

He noted that the CRU was not established to witch-hunt any police officer but to promote accountability in the police.

“It is going to enhance police-community collaboration and build confidence with members of the public,” he said.

He appealed to the public to supply the police with information, stressing that the police would also show transparency so as to get cooperation from the public.

Egbetokun advised the public to desist from reporting police misconduct on social media.

“Officers who are going to man the CRU are going to be carefully selected, they are going to be officers with impeccable integrity.

“They will be trained and be given regular training, including opportunity for overseas training.

“If the police is able to deliver on their constitutional mandate, we will all benefit from it,”
he said.

The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Idowu Owohunwa, said that the command had taken the lead to establish the state CRU as a framework for promoting Police-Citizens’ accountability.

“Their rights will be fully asserted, if their dignity is also violated or false and malicious information passed against them by misguided members of the public in the line of their official engagements.

“The establishment of the center is, from all intents and purposes, a fulfilment of statutory provisions that is intended to enhance police accountability and engender professional police service delivery, rather than witch – hunt or unduly malign our dutiful officers,”
he said.

Owohunwa said the unit had applications for e-crime reporting, which enabled citizens to report crimes from the comfort of their homes or offices without necessarily coming physically to the police stations.

He said the internal security space in recent times, had been laced with threats of cultism, armed robbery, kidnapping, murder and Sexual and Gender Based Violence.

“We are also constantly confronted with the challenge of dissecting and dealing with the thin line between the civil and criminal dynamics of land disputes which are also prevalent in the state.

“Also of routine concern is the traffic gridlock and the attendant occasional traffic robberies, which are compounded by on-going road projects across the state including, in particular, the Lagos-Ibadan highway.

“Hardly does a day pass by without the ever vigilant operatives of the command recovering weapons and illicit drugs of various descriptions at stop and search points, raids of black spots, and other operational engagements.

“We need more support toward optimally advancing the attainment of our policing mandate to Lagos residents,”
he said.

The commissioner said that crime profile of the state was further accentuated by the prevalence of illegal firearms proliferation, and illicit drug abuse and trafficking.

He said that in addressing the prevalence of sexual and gender based violence in the state, the command was working in partnership with the Office of the wife of Lagos state governor to establish a purpose-built Centre for the Command’s Gender Unit.

The combo of Bisi Olatilo and Smart Orotemu was always a delight to listen to because of the jokes and strong grasp of pidgin English. Smart was just a comedian on radio. Together they moved a great portion of radio listeners to RN3. Another OAP was Ijeoma Benlowu. RN2 also had Ndidi Osoka.
And Veronica Osawere.

Lol . Ihria Enakhimo Was my neighbor at #9 George street
Kpamgbo the magician! I wish I could remember the entire monologue. It's one of the funniest things that I've ever heard in my entire life.

This was just after the annulment of the June 12, 1993 elections and I was listening to RN 2 with my mum.

Ihria Enakhimo began an incredible monologue. He told the entire story of the election and the annulment of the election, but he changed names and some other things. It was funny as hell. My mum and I burst out laughing when he said "Kpamgbo The Magician". The minister of justice and attorney general of the federation was Chief Clement Akpamgbo and the government had just released a new decree about the annulment of the election (that was what he was referring to when he said, "Kpamgbo The Magician".

The guy was also fantastic on the Turning Wheel on TV in 1986/1987.

I didn't plan to mention all presenters/radio stations, just some that defined certain eras for me.

RN2 in the 1980s, OGBC2 in the early 1990s, Raypower in the mid-1990s, Rhythm in the late 1990s and Cool FM in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

I expected that others would also mention the stations and presenters that defined that period for them and they have done so, but surprisingly nobody has mentioned this man. He was on my mind when I wrote that post years ago, even though I didn't mention his name.

I wrote that Radio Nigeria 3 started in 1989. Well this man was the star of the station and he was incredible. He could host many programmes back to back and in many different languages. I'm referring to Bisi Olatilo

I still remember some of the things that he said on RN3.

I remember when he talked about Iya Modinat on his show. I was shocked.

Iya Modinat was a woman that sold food under a tree in Obalende. I had heard about her, but I didn't believe it until I saw it. Cars used to come from State House Dodan Barracks, from the many state liaison offices on Victoria Island, from the homes of wealthy people across Lagos, just to buy rice from a rude woman that sold food under a tree. You would see NTA newscasters and all kinds of celebrities queuing to buy food from this woman in the late 1980s and early 1990s. I refused to eat her food.

One day there was a commotion in Obalende and I was told that people attacked Iya Modinat and her children because they said that she was using juju in her food.

Bisi Olatilo spoke about her on his radio show (that was when she was still doing brisk business).

I remember the day that he started talking about parts of Lagos. He said that it was one man that started spare parts business in Alaba, now there are spare parts shops everywhere. It was one man that started chemist business in Obalende, now there are chemist shops everywhere in Obalende. He kept talking about places that were known for certain things and how it was started by an individual.

He presented programmes in Pidgin, Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba on RN3 (it was the first community station in Nigeria).

Now we have Wazobia FM, Naija FM, etc.

Politics › Controversy Over Position Of Tinubu's Youth Minister by naptu2(op): 9:25am On Aug 23, 2023
President Bola Tinubu had appointed Abubakar Momoh as the minister of youths, but he later redeployed him to the Ministry of Niger Delta Development. See previous thread here: https://www.nairaland.com/7810527/president-tinubu-redeploys-oyetola-tunji-ojo

This has created a vacancy in the Ministry of Youths and some youths are actively campaigning for that position on social media. They have even created campaign videos for their candidates.

Some others believe that it is wrong for people to campaign for the position of youth minister, since it is not an elected position. They are embarrassed by the way that the people that are campaigning are behaving.

grin I think I need to pay more attention to Manny Onumonu's show. It's like he has interviewed everybody!

I've been searching for videos or pictures of Rosemary Anieze Adams for a long time. I eventually found a picture and posted it here, but that was not enough. You need to feel that woman's fire (it cannot be explained), so I went searching for a video and what do you know? Manny interviewed her sometime recently.
naptu2:
Although the interview was conducted by video call, you can still feel a bit of her fire.

The great Rosemary Anieze Adams worked at the P&T (forerunner of Nitel), Western Nigeria Television and Western Nigeria Radio and the NTA. She acted in the popular late 1970s/early 1980s drama serial "Adio Family" and what most people remember her for is that she was Miss Nigeria 1960 (Miss Independence).

She also later worked as a beauty consultant.

Manny interviewed her in August this year.
