Nice one!!! Good morning chief naptu2.

I don't care if it's for the cam, this is highly commendable. You are public officers and you work for the public. Act like it.
Good morning.

This is the Ojuelegba Flyover. The same flyover from which the truck fell. You can see the yellow posts on the left and right (just above the minibus), but the barrier has been cut and removed.

I'd like to see how they'll enforce it because this is not the first time that a government is banning trucks from the flyovers in Lagos.
naptu2:
This truck accident at Ojuelegba has reminded me of the part of Bola Tinubu's war with the NURTW that I rarely write about. I have often written about the City Bus experiment, the war against agberos, the MOT issue, etc. but I rarely write about this part of the problem.

Governor Bola Tinubu decided that Danfos were one of the major causes of traffic jams on Lagos roads and that it was very dangerous for heavy duty vehicles to ply the many flyovers in the city, so he erected overhead bars at the entrances to most of the flyovers in Lagos.

You see, danfo buses usually convert the entrances to these flyovers into bus stops, which cause traffic jams and delay other road users, while heavy duty vehicles cause a huge strain on the flyovers and quite often fall off the bridges. Private vehicles, which are shorter than the buses and trucks, would be able to freely use the flyovers, while the buses and trucks would use the road below.

However, NURTW agberos, bus and truck drivers did not like this idea. Quite often drivers of heavy duty vehicles used their vehicles to destroy the overhead bars, while agberos and other thugs cut the bars in the middle of the night. The government often spent a lot of money replacing these bars until one day it finally gave up and stopped replacing them.

We are experiencing a similar problem in Lekki Phase 1. LCC built a pedestrian bridge to enable people cross the expressway. They also erected a metal fence in the median of the expressway to stop people running across and endangering their lives. You will not believe the number of times that people have destroyed that fence. LCC also stationed Man O War officials to arrest people that are jaywalking (or jayrunning), but this has not stopped the problem. People still destroyed the fence in the middle of the night. Now it seems like LCC have given up. They haven't replaced the fence in quite a while.
naptu2:
Aha! This is what I was referring to. Luckily I've gotten a picture of it from Google maps.

The Bola Tinubu Administration put up these barriers to stop trucks and buses from using the flyover. It was not the first administration to do so. I know that a previous administration put up much larger and stronger barriers in the 1970s, but I can't remember who was governor at the time.

This particular barrier is at the flyover at Jibowu and it was put up by the Tinubu Administration, but see what is left of it. I remember clearly that this barrier was replaced several times when Tinubu was governor, but people kept removing it. All that is left is the posts. Every single time that it was replaced, people kept cutting off the barrier and leaving those two posts. They kept doing it until it got to a point that the government got fed up and left it like that.

You can see the yellow and black posts on either side of the road just before the bridge.

FLASH: Lagos State Government is set to install Truck Barriers along Funsho Williams Avenue (In line with the earlier pronouncement by the Lagos State Government on the prohibition of Trucks and Articulated vehicles on some bridges within the State), for 3 nights commencing from Friday 11th to Monday 14th August, 2023. 10.00pm to 6.00am daily for 3 nights commencing from Friday 11th to Monday 14th August, 2023. 10.00pm to 6.00am daily.

Consequently, the following alternative routes will be available to Motorists during the installation of the barriers;

i. Motorists from Eko Bridge/Constain/Iponri inbound Ojuelegba/Alhaji Masha Road will be diverted to the service lane from Alaka via National Stadium gate to link Barracks or Alhaji Masha Road to continue their journeys.

ii. Motorists from Eko Bridge via Costain and those from Apapa Road going through Iponri will make use of Iponri Estate road to link Bode Thomas via Adeniran Ogunsanya to Shitta Roundabout for their desired destinations.

Motorists are implored to be patient as the temporary closure of the bridge is planned for night time as part of traffic management strategy to avert further accidents and loss of lives.

Prince Muyiwa Adejobi is the spokesman of the Nigerian Police Force.

Prince Olumuyiwa Adejobi @Princemoye1

The Commissioner of Police Osun State, CP Kehinde Longe, has acted on this. The officers have been arrested, and necessary action would be taken. The PPRO osun has been ordered to update us on the actions taken. We have zero tolerance for extortion and corruption in general.

The IGP has made it clear severally. In fact, at the last IGP's conference with senior officers in abuja on Tuesday, the IGP warned that no officer should bring money or gifts to him.

He said, "I dont need your money. Dont bring any money to me. Use your legitimate money to improve the policing of your area of responsibility. " So this goes a long way to describe the stuff the IGP is made of and the type of leadership he preaches in the NPF.

So, no officer should use IGPs name to extort. No way. We have sent out IGP'S monitoring squad to arrest any erring officer, not only the Police, but other law enforcement agents who dwell in corruption and inappropriate behaviours.

This is the original tradition, and we are reverting back to it. We need to sanitise our system and work with the government at all levels to inject sanity and decency into our system in all ramifications. Thanks.

Odogwujayy:
Last time Nigeria hosted alone was in 1980. It's been a long while. I get ur point nonetheless.
This idea came from FIFA.

Japan and South Korea were in an intense battle to host the 2002 World Cup. Both countries spent a lot of money to get the hosting rights (there were billboards from Japan and from Korea in Lagos in the late 1990s). FIFA solved the problem by encouraging both countries to co-host the tournament.

FIFA then began encouraging countries to co-host tournaments as a means of ensuring that more countries can host, as a means of reducing costs, and also as a means of bringing people together.

That's why there have been many co-hosts of many tournaments since the late 1990s. In most cases each country could have hosted the tournament on their own.

UEFA took things a step further in 2021. Euro 2020 had no actual host. Matches were played all over Europe. (Most of the Euro competitions since 2000 have been jointly hosted).

It's this idea that made Nigeria and Benin to submit a joint bid.

Additional information

This is not a league match. It is an off-season competition that was held at Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne.

The competition featured Remo Stars, Beyond Limits Academy (which is Remo Stars youth/academy team), Kwara Stars and Shooting Stars Sports Club of Ibadan.

That's why Dele Aiyenugba could play against his son, because he son is the captain of Beyond Limits Academy.

The competition was sponsored by Value Jet.

Beyond Limits Academy defeated Kwara Stars on penalties. They interviewed father and son on the radio this morning and I think they had a bet (I wasn't listening attentively) and Dele Aiyenugba now owes his son some money.

Playing against my son a dream come true — Aiyenugba

Former Super Eagles Goalkeeper, Dele Aiyenugba has said that playing on same pitch with his son, Daniel on the opposing team in a match was a dream come true.

He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday that, he was full of joy during the exchange of crest as both captained their respective club sides.

Aiyenugba was in goal for Kwara United FC while his son kept for Beyond Limits Academy of Ogun, during the semifinal match of a preseason tournament in Ikenne on Monday.
