There are certain reasons why virginity as a subject and all these emphasis on it remains prevalent.
Some of these reason include:

~The moral code it represents.
Ladies who are virgins are seen are morally upright in the sense that they would definitely not be sleeping around and having their bodies used by males.
It is seen as symbol for dignity of the female.

~Another reason is for prevention of STDs and other diseases. Someone who hasn't had sex with another would definitely not be prone to be infected by these diseases

~There is also the issue of teenage pregnancies and having children out of wedlock or outside the umbrella of marriage.

~But the main reason behind all this is religion and culture.
Most religious books always emphasize on protecting your virginity and all that.
Various traditions especially here in Nigeria value virginity and you always see mothers talking to there daughters about how vital and important their virginity is.[/color]
