As a newbie on Upwork, my honest advice is to start with cheaper gigs, preferably between $10–$50. Those are the jobs you realistically stand a chance of landing at this stage. Most high paying gigs require experience, even if clients don’t state it outright. Trust me, when it comes down to choosing, many clients will pick someone with a Top Rated or Top Rated Plus badge over a new freelancer with no reviews.

For now, your main goal should be profile building, not big money. Focus on landing small jobs, delivering excellent work, and getting 5-star ratings and solid reviews. That’s what speeds up the process of earning a badge, which in turn opens the door to higher-paying jobs.

I’d also recommend subscribing to Freelancer Plus instead of buying connects. It costs $20 per month, but you get 50% off on your first month, so you’ll pay just $10. With Freelancer Plus, you get 100 free connects, plus the about 50 welcome connects Upwork gives new users. That’s roughly about 150 connects in total.

Another advantage is that Freelancer Plus gives you daily alerts on newly posted jobs, so you can apply to listings within seconds of them going live. That alone increases your chances significantly.

When applying for jobs, try to focus on clients from the US, Canada, Australia, and Europe. You will need to trek far from the airport. Some eg MMA2 will detain any e-hailing taxi they see close by, even the bustop opposite the departure gate.

You won't need to go far in MM2 cos there's a bus stop directly opposite the airport. Just walk towards the gate after chicken republic and cross to the other side then book your ride.

If you don't want to cross, just come out of the gate and turn right, then walk down a bit and book. No body would disturb you.
