Actually, that is not correct.

The current blackouts began in 1978...the same year the old Electricity Corp of Nigeria became the National Elelctric Power Authority.

The problem was, in my opinion, aggravated by

1.Lots of people getting connected to the National Grid , espeically from the 1980's onward without an increase in generation.

2.Many Organisations and people not paying their bills.

3.The messed up transmission system.

It is a shame, yes....but fixing it up is going to take a very long time. In fact my annoyance with the GEJ and PMB admins is that they are not honest enough to tell us that it would take a long time.

On a more serious note....if you expect 24 hours power supply in the enxt few years, you might have to wait a little while longer.

The transmission and generation system needs fixing. And we need to generate far more than what we have because 5000MW is not enough for Nigeria ...whichever way you look at it.

I would like the government and the DISCOS to be honest with us and tell us that it is going to take long...and what needs to be done. Not promises,promises.!

Actually....and this is not a defence of the APC (disclosure...I have been following Nigeria's power sector for some time), APC had nothing to say about power (except Atiku saying that they should reverse the privatization policy....but that was him speaking in his personal capacity).

The main problems are generation and transmission. APC should sort them out....promises or no.

When NEPA was NEPA...one big complaint they used to have was that people did not pay their bills.From time to time...they would release figures saying that people owed billions of naira...and Nigerians just looked at them

Then there is the fact that our transmission system is in a mess...and it needs fixing. That is why GEJ privatized power.

Finally, generation too needs to be increased....and it needs money.

You can call me a zombie.... but you can agree with me that there is no such thing as a free lunch . Time we Nigerians started paying for our electricity.

Netherlands footballing great Johan Cruyff has died of cancer aged 68.

Cruyff, who made his name as a forward with Ajax and Barcelona, was European footballer of the year three times.

He won three consecutive European Cups with Ajax from 1971, coached Barcelona to their first European Cup triumph in 1992 and helped the Dutch reach the 1974 World Cup final, where they lost 2-1 to West Germany.



The Dutch FA said: "Words can hardly be found for this huge loss."

It added that Cruyff was the "greatest Dutch footballer of all time and one of the world's best ever" and wished everyone "a lot of strength in this difficult time".
