Islam for Muslims / The Toil And Tide, Trial And Triumph Of Muhammadu Buhari by nect: 9:19am On Apr 26, 2015
By Kolawole Azeez. The toil, the till and tide, the trial and triumph of General Muhammadu Buhari in this 2015 electioneering campaigns could make an inspiration for every struggling individual to make it in life. The current massive support Buhari is enjoying along with his party, All Progressive Party (APC) is phenomenal. Was it always like that?
No.
Buhari has been on this race for 16 years. He has been contesting for four times: 3 times before and this is the fourth time (2003, 2007, 2011 & 2015). In the past three consecutive times he has been running, all these Nigerians who do not now worry whether he has certificate, whether he jailed people or whether he was even a military head of state, never looked at his side then. At a point (2007 and 2011), only a handful of Northerners supported him.

However, the man Buhari kept on pressing. He kept on struggling with only his personal money, his individual struggle, contesting and losing, moving from one party to another (ANPP to CPC and now APC) pursuing his personal quest to succeed. This means, at that time, many people did not give him a chance, but he was neither deterred nor afraid to fail again and again. He moved on!

Note that Buhari (born in 1942) is 72 and still contesting. But note also that he did not start just now. He had started this presidential race since he was in his 50s like Jonathan now or any other young presidential candidate.

Then, the people did not look at his way. But now his time has come. And it seems none can stop him since Allah is ready to crown his persistent effort and prayer. And that is the goal of this piece.

Whatever halal goal you have set before yourself, set it before Allah. Keep working at it without wavering, without ceasing. At some points at the beginning, you may stumble and may fail. Keep coming back at it, rejuvenating and re-invigorating yourself with all resilience.

Sometimes you may even fail the second or third time. That does not mean the task is impossible. It only means testing and preparing and fortifying you for a greater success ahead. And also know that a time of success will come for you when all the methods and efforts which you earlier made that failed will be made again and they will succeed this time. Why? It is Allah’s time for you.

You will need to keep learning more about the task you have set before yourself and you will be applying the new knowledge and improvements as soon as you acquire them. A time shall come when all your being and all what you have been gathering about the task will fuse into one indivisible entity that makes up your being: expertise, experience, wisdom, resilience, excellence, maturity, patience, foresight and focus. At this point, the breeze of success will be blowing around you. Then the time of your success is near ‘fatian qareeb’. However, you must start and end every bit of your work with complete obedience to the will of Allah for protection and ultimate success.

The PDP neither complained about Gen Buhari’s lack of certificate nor his old age nor even his anti-corruption drive in the past elections because they knew he was no formidable rival at that time. But now that he appears invincible, they are kicking and jerking. Now the people are ready to vote for him even if he did not have a certificate or he is 100 years old or he jailed all Nigerians for alleged corruption charges.

It is his time and soon will it be yours too in shaa Allah.

Islam for Muslims / Muslim Writers Must Focus On Issues – Abu Umar Al-faruq by nect: 1:45pm On Feb 12, 2015
In this interview with Ustaz AbdurRazaq Adegboyega AbdusSalam fondly called Abu Baba or Abu Umar Al-Faruq, shared his experience at Voice of Nigeria (VON), his travels, the state of Islam in Nigeria and the world today with Kolawole Azeez, the Editor, Muslim Connect. He also makes his point on the political currents in Nigeria and the required expectations of the Muslims. The excerpts:

How has your experience been like working with Voice of Nigeria (VON) as a stand-out Muslim? What are your challenges in this regard?

It is an interesting as well as a challenging part of my life. I joined VON in 1992. In the Department, we were about eighteen in the office and there were only two Muslims. The second person soon left, leaving me alone. I was left alone and it was not easy. However, we have learnt as Muslims to live with Non-Muslims. They were my colleagues and for so many of them we became like friends doing so many things together to enhance the job and our profession.

A few factors stood for me. One was professional competence, ability to work under pressure and the other was personal morality. Alhamdulillah.

You wrote a book, Living with others bi Salaam (with peace). Does this have a bearing on the work or vice versa?

The book had little bearing to my workplace. It was a product of my experience serving in various Muslim organisations, especially the MSSN where, needlessly, brothers became sworn enemies. My experience and reflections led to the book which, many say, has come to define me.

As one who has travelled far and wide, can you lead us into the state of Islam and the condition of the Muslims?

Indeed I visited a few countries and met Muslims. In Bahamas, I did not see a single Muslim indigene and was only able to locate a Mosque after a long sojourn. It was the same in Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia and a few other Asian countries that I visited. The condition of Islam and Muslims is similar to what obtains in Nigeria in matter of disunity, innovation and political participation. What is only different in those countries is the obvious population of Muslims, yet secularism holds sway in most cases.

What is your take on the Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria?

On the issue of Boko Haram, my position is that it represents the sign of mismanagement at government and religious levels. Indeed, Boko Haram does not represent Islam but they are mostly Muslims. Why are our children so gullible and so easily recruited for vices? We failed as parents and religious leaders in that regard. The problems of injustice, inequality, neglect and abuses are the way government help to fuel and fund Boko Haram, that on one angle. A second angle to it is the inability of our soldiers to root the miscreants. The same army that salvaged Liberia which was already shattered and saved Sierra Leone from coup cannot save its own country. It is an irony. The fact the arms and ammunition meant for our soldiers end up in the hand of the insurgents and the sudden wealth of some military generals tells us there are a lot of undercurrents.

Muslims are often tagged terrorists. What informed this development?

That Muslims being tagged terrorists is a stereotype, the problem of generalisation and propaganda. It is age long and it will take a long walk and talk to correct it. It is not same with other religions.

The fast-approaching general elections in Nigeria, what should be the position of the Muslims?

The coming election is a litmus test for Nigeria in many respects. The important aspect is for us all to become concerned about the future of the country. We must not abandon our future to people who only reason about feeding the stomach momentarily. We must seek a permanent change that can never be reversed. We must treasure our vote and give it to the candidate that will best protect it.

You are a writer of notable standing. But you have not been churning out works recently like before?

I have five books in the making and at different stages. My task as SA to DG actually affected me. I wrote four books for VON but none has been published yet. I am looking for funds to produce the other two. So before the end of the year I expect most of the books ready for the market in shaa Allah.

How do you cope with work, writing, travelling, family, dawah and private life?

Coping with them all is a function of time management. The ICT world has also made things very easy for me. I can put my ideas on my iPad while traveling long distance, read Qur'an on iPad during such travels and surf the Net as well. I can also do official assignments while on the road using available ICT facilities.

Shouldn't there be an Association of Nigerian Muslim Authors (ANMA) as we do have ANA, for fresh and experienced Muslim authors?

As for Association of Muslim authors, it can be a nice idea. We will be able to criticise ourselves and share ideas. It might bring great added value to writing.

How do you think it can be berthed or launched?

Someone, or a group must give the initiative, call others and then it begins. Even if they are five or ten, it can start with clear objectives. Others would join later.

What's your advice to the upcoming Muslim writers?

Muslim writers must focus on issues; issues that will propel education and self reformation. They must be good professionals and try to attain good standards.

As the first Amir of The Muslim Congress (TMC) and a stalwart member of the Group, what's the stand of the Organization in the scheme of things first among the Muslims and then in Nigeria?

The Muslim Congress (TMC) is a unique body. I thank Allah for allowing its birth and supporting it at all times and at crucial moments. Our plan covers Muslims and non-Muslims. We seek to reform the souls, to strengthen the bodies and purify the environment. In achieving this, we definitely have agenda for Muslims and adherents of other religions.

What's the Group's stand on education both Islamic and otherwise?

We are strongly committed to productive engagement with individuals and groups on providing qualitative education for all. It has not been easy as our effort is limited by our resources.

You are an unapologetic Muslim polygamist. What do you say to Muslims and non-Muslims alike on polygamy and its scare on some latter day Muslims? And what has your experience been?

Polygamy is an interesting experience. First I know Allah does not permit anything impracticable. Therefore, reservations are not just based on supposed evils of polygamy, but on propaganda and hypes created from the West. The West is the master of the modern world and most people see the dictates of the West as the Revelation. That is where the problem is. For me, the fears of polygamy are as good as the fears of marriage, so do we abandon marriage as it is gradually unfolding in the West! My experience has been good, shareable and one that proves that the problem is not with polygamy.

Islam for Muslims / Joblessness And Its Solution In Islam by nect: 7:21am On Jan 28, 2015
Joblessness is a disease that kills mental, intellectual and physical capabilities. As a matter of fact, it is inevitable that human being should move and work and if he is deprived of work and movement, his brain becomes beset, his intellect becomes exhausted, movement of the mind becomes weak and devilish insinuations and malicious thoughts take control of his heart.

Evil and wicked intentions may occur to him as a result of the depression that befalls him out of his joblessness.

In order to be cured of this disease, the affected youth should get a vocation that suits him like reading, trading or any other thing that can stand between him and joblessness and which is capable of making a sound, and useful member of his community whether he does the work for himself or for others

Islam for Muslims / Who Is Sheikh Muhammad Al-amin Al Kanemi? by nect: 2:27pm On Jan 24, 2015
Muhammad Al-Amin Al-Kanemi was born in 1778 A.D. in an area near the Lake Chad in Borno. His father belonged to the tribe of Kanembu and his mother was an Arab. His father sent him to Egypt on scholarship where proved to be hard-working, intelligent and full of potentiality of good leadership.

When he completed his studies in Egypt, he returned home and soon after his return, his father took him to Makkah in order perform Hajj. However, his father died in Medinah while performing the Hajj. Muhammad Al-Amin therefore decided to return home through North Africa where he remained for sometime in order to further his studies of the Holy Qur’an.

At the time of his return to Borno, a wide of jihad, reform and revolution of Shehu Uthman Dan Fodio had begun to reach Hausa States and approaching Borno. As soon as he returned to Borno, the Mai of Borno appointed him as Chief of the Kanembu tribe where, in addition to his position as the Chief, he undertook to preaching of Islam with establishment of his own school at Diffu, with branches in many areas. Many scholars from the Kanembu, the Shua Arab and the Tubu tribes came to him to learn.

When the Fulanis living in Borno answered the call to jihad by Sheu Uthman Dan Fodio and rose against the Mia of Borno, it was Muhammad Al-Amin Al-Kanemi who came to the rescueof the Mai from the uprising of the Fulanis. It was through this that the Maiof Borno came to have confidence in Muhammad Al-Amin Al-Kanemi who gave them protection whenever they were in trouble. In the meantime, Al-Kanemi continued with his scholarly work by establishing more schools of learning to which people came from everywhere for scholarship.

It was this way that Muhammad Al-Amin Al-Kanemi became so popular that in the end he secured the title of the Shehu of Borno. Muhammad Al-Amin Al-Kanemi was a devout Muslim disciplinarian. Though he was not a jihadist like Shehu Uthman Dan Fodio, he fought his campaigns to protect the territory of Borno. However, he certainly tried to enforce Shari’ah more strictly. In Ngala he was the centre of a group of ‘ulamaa (scholars) who had specially dedicated themselves to Islam and Shari’ah. Moreover, he was a sufi and was widely believed to be a ‘wali’.

Muhammad Al-Amin Al-Kanemi’s importance lies chiefly in the fact that his career demonstrates how effective ideas were well armed and strong and they fought hard against the jihadists, yet in the end they were overwhelmed because they lacked the of a powerful ideology to unite their people and fire their hearts. Muhammad Al-Amin Al-Kanemi, on the other hand, used many of the jihadists’ own spiritual weapons against them. This was sufficient to unite the Borno Muslims behind him and to inspire them with their belief in the cause of religion.

In actual fact, Muhammad Al-Amin Al-Kanemi replied not only on Kanembu spears but on the sword of faith and it was this that made him a match for the Fulani jihadists. It was in this way that he managed to stand in the way of the Fulani jihadists conquering Borno but at the same time through scholarship he was able to achieve what the Fulani jihadists wanted to achieve of establishing the proper Shari’ah for the Muslims in Born. Muhammad Al-Amin Al-Kanemi passed away in 1835 and was succeeded by his son ‘Umar as the Shehu of Borno.

Religion / Purification Of The Soul – Jamaal Al-din Zarabozo by nect: 5:35pm On Jan 18, 2015
For a number of reasons, this is a very important time to be writing a book of this nature. First, the concept of purification of the soul as a whole is and always will be central to the message of Islam and to the welfare of humans, both in this life and the Hereafter. Indeed, it was a main mission of the messengers and prophets themselves.

Second, there is a very strong need to shed light on the correct path of purification as delineated by the Quran and Sunnah- free of the foreign influence, deviations and heresies that have found their way into the realm of the religion and have caused a great deal of harm.

The path described by the Quran and Sunnah is the only path that can result in a true purification of the soul. Indeed, it is the only path that is truly consistent with the purpose for which humans were created. Hence, any discussion of purification of the soul must rely heavily and exclusively on the Quran and Sunnah and what can be correctly derived from those two sources.

Third, many Muslims themselves are today being influenced by secular, materialistic psychology, leading them to neglect the spiritual side of humans and to ignore the guidance that Islam offers for the purification of the soul. This influence often occurs at a level wherein the person himself may not be completely aware that it is occurring.

Fourth, for some time now, there has been an Islamic revival spreading throughout the Muslim world. Upon closer inspection, it seems that this revival is somewhat tenuous and delicate, in the sense that for many Muslims it is more of an emotional phenomenon. In order for this revival to be truly successful and lead to what it needs to lead to, it must be guided by the comprehensive teachings of Islam. First and foremost among those teachings is what is related to the purification of the soul.

Without the purification of the souls, the revival will only be on the outer shell and will, in fact, be a “deceptive” revival, in the sense that the inner consciousness will not have been reformed and the lapse back to the pre-revival times may be very close at hand. Indeed, without the purifications of the souls, the very goals of the revival from the outset may be wrong.

Religion / How To Get Good Husbands Faster by nect: 6:16pm On Mar 29, 2013
By Kolawole Azeez on MUSLIM CONNECT

For women 2 get good, Allah-conscious husbands for nikkah, certain secrets are key. If a Muslim lady follow these principles to the letter, inshaAllah, she shall soon find her sweet heart.

A Muslim lady fear Allah without without showing off. This is a secret because most ladies want to show their figures in d public just like d non-believers.

Little do they know that men that would be infactuated to them will be those that only want to 'eat' and go.

They (such men) know that d way such ladies are attracted 2 them they (d ladies) are attracted 2 other hungry men as well.

This is not 2 say that Muslim ladies should be dirty or unkempt. That is far from d point. But we are saying that unbriddled public display of a lady does not guaranttee getting a hubby or a responsible one.

An example of this uncontrolled public display is common on Facebook, Twitter and other social media.

We say: protect your chastity and Allah protects your beauty and grants your heart's desire.

Islam for Muslims / Re: We Are Losing Our Identity To The Arabs by nect: 5:26am On Feb 06, 2013
You speak as an ignorant Muslim because you don't know that there is no racism (asabiyyah) in Islam. Unfortunately, you are attempting to create it. Remember, Allah has chosen Arabic as the language everyone (Muslims and non-Muslims alike) will speak when we are dead. Are you going to speak Yoruba then too?

You must love Arabic for 3 reasons:
(1) it is the language of the Qur'an (Allah himself speaks it)
(2) it is the language of the Prophet (SAW)
(3) it is the language we are all going to speak in our graves.

As for naming, Muslims should name their children from any of these three (3) sources in Islam:
(1) Attributes of Allah eg Abdul Gafar, Abdul Hakeem, etc
(2) the Prophet's names/attributes eg: Muhammad, Sodiq, etc
(3) other Prophets and companions of the Prophet (SAW) eg: Musa, Isah, Ibraheem, Nuhu, Adam, Muadh, Umar, Abu Bakri, Uthman, Alli, etc

So where do you now find Bamidele or Kolawole, Olajide (my own names) as role models for Islamic identity?

You also know that Islam has its own culture different from the culture of the Arabs too. Some of it can be similar to it or any other culture of the world, including the Yoruba that you want to be promoting. And it can be different from them!

Where it is different, you must prefer the Islamic culture or stand on anything or issue if truly you are a Muslim. The first identity you must be proud of is your Islamic or Muslim Identity, pure and simple!

Can you now understand?

Religion / Is Genotype Important When Considering Marriage In Islam? by nect: 5:49pm On Feb 02, 2013
By Kolawole Azeez

No. But a Muslim must understand that marital challenges are bigger than Genotype issues.

It is faith, love and responsibility that will stand the tests and trials of marriage.

Prospective couple can do genotype test only to know their status but not to determine the marriage possibility or not.
Conditions to marriage do not include genotype test as the Prophet (SAW) did not include in pre-marital prescriptions.

He (SAW) prescribed that if you want marry, marry the one who religious. By religious is meant God-fearing.

He said people marry because of wealth, beauty, status and power. But we should not marry because of those things because they fade away with time.

The point we are making here is that a would-be could should not put genotype at the front banner of their marriage to the point that it tells if they will marry or not.
They should not say it is because of it that a child or two will die or has died because of it.

Allah alone determines that.

I have married and had four children. I have lost two of them who had XX genotype related issues.

Of course before marriage both of us did and knew our genotype group. Yet we never a determinant to our marriage. And it is still not a factor in our union.

We know that Allah alone gives and takes determines when He does either of them. Thinking that you can know if one among your four children will die is tantamount to disbelief (kufr).

This is so because even one who belongs to AA genotype cannot boast of living beyond any particular age nor can the father and mother claim such.

So why not leave things to Allah?

I have seen doctors who died of malaria fever. Sailors have died in water. Hunters have died in the forest while hunting. And professional drivers have died while plying their trade: driving.

And so will all of us one day or another.

Genotype or no genotype, Istikharah is recommended before any decision is made, including marriage. This alone will do as Allah suffices for all.

We can expect problems but we should pray to Allah to help us overcome them.

Allah has already told us as recorded in His Holy Book: We shall test the you with something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits, but give glad tidings to the patient. [Q2: 155]

Religion / AQSA DAY - 12th Rab'ul Awwal, 1434 by nect: 6:54pm On Jan 23, 2013
InshaAllah tomorrow is 12th Rab'ul Awwal, 1434 (24th January, 2013). It is AQSA DAY, pure and simple.

Muslims must stop losing their identity as some enjoy aping d non-Muslims.

Tomorrow has come to be our holiday and we can savour it by reflecting on our worship individually and collectively towards Allah and to one another.

How far have we followed the example of that Prophet (SAW)?

We need not do this by wanting to celebrate 12th Rab'ul Awwal the way Xmas of 1st January is celebrated.

We are Muslims, we none other. We need not stop so low and condescend to be like them in an attempt to popularise Islam.

Or what do you say?

Foreign Affairs / What We May Not Know About The Terrorist Film by nect: 9:58pm On Sep 24, 2012
Often times Muslims are tagged terrorists, extremists, fundamentalists, Islamists (actually I think we should be proud to be this last tag even as they use it disprovingly) and hardliners. They would say some Muslim extremists attack this or attack that whereas those Muslims have only defended or sought to defend in such cases. They will say they are irascible.
Recently, an anti-Islamic film was produced; and then distributed on the Internet. When some Muslims reacted all around the world, they said they attacked this and attacked that. They ignore saying defended this and defended that which truly it was. Of course this is not the first time such provocative film will come on screen. So one cannot say: have they been doing that before?
The Muslims’ reactions in Libya, Egypt, Yemen, Bangladesh, Bahrain and even Nigeria are in defence of our existence – what shaped our very existence. Some people, who did not know, ask why? What is in a film? Have they seen the film? What’s actually the content of the film?
Here are some of what such questioners do not know.
THE TITLE
The film’s title is Innocence of Muslims. Using this title in itself is violent and terroristic, annoying to its very root. It is deceptive as irony was deployed to convey their message. The producer actually had his background in the Faculty of Arts from Cairo University, Egypt. Even the artistes in the film still claim they were deceived about the concept of it – whether this claim is true or false is a subject of dispute. Actually the working title was Desert Warrior.
Earlier, they titled it The Innocence of bn Laden. This means the producer’s hatred began with the man, Osama bin Muhammad bin Awwad bin Laden. However, like many people in the world, when they castigate a Muslim or a group of Muslims, their hatred is not for only that Muslim or group of Muslims, it is often for all Muslims, stated or unstated. And the Qur’an has confirmed this when Allah says the non-Muslims would never love you the way they make you believe. They only want you to join them after which they would show you their true colour.
THE CONTENT
The content of the said film is terrible; I have said this before. It was meant to invoke anger and rage. And this was achieved, probably beyond measure as the end is not yet in sight.
Therein, Prophet (SAW) is portrayed as a pretender, a womanizer, a child abuser, an ignoramus and that all these were in ignorance. The followers follow him in ignorance; that they fight in ignorance. That is why it is entitled Innocence of Muslims (The ‘Ignorance’ of Muslims). What could be more enraging?
THE PRODUCER
Till now it is believed in some quarters that that evil perpetrator’s name is Sam Bacile. This is because the middle-aged man actually gave his name as such on his YouTube account with which he published the poignant film. But no. Such is a pseudonym that many other nefarious fellows adopt too. His real name is Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, an Egyptian Copt.
Though the man has lived in the United States for over two decades, produced the film there, been convicted and jailed twice and rejailed once, banned from using the Internet for 5 years, he is a native Egyptian - a Copt.
Originally the Copts were the natives of the old Egypt before the advent of Islam. Though now a minority, they are still powerful and wealthy. Some examples are the former UN Secretary-General: Boutros Boutros Ghali; the CEO of the Egypt’s main Telecom company, ORASCOM to mention a few.
Nakoula Bassely Nakoula, 55, an Osama bin Laden age-mate, has a son called Abanob Nakoula who is said to have paid the artistes of the film. The father sought and got over $60 000 from his in-laws in back home in Egypt to finance this film. You can imaging the length at which people can go to fight their perceived enemy.
WHY
Back home in his homeland, Egypt, as it is in many parts, there is envy against the Muslims who are seen as domineering, irascible and do not possess a legitimate origin to do or claim all what they are doing. So Nakoula B. Nakoula who had written his script while in jail sought to vent his anger and that of his compatriots against the enemy’s religion - Islam.
OUR RESPONSE
All said, how do we react? Or better put, how should we react even though we have been reacting already? The President of the Republic of Egypt, Muhammed Morsi, has responded by calling on the people to be calm and maintain peace and that people should desist from insulting the personality of the Holy Prophet (SAW). It is sacred.
He should not be drag to the mud and denigrated. Religious views are revered and should be treated as such.
We want to give the excuse that man was not commissioned by the US government to produce the errant film. But we like to know it also did not pass through the US Censors Board, it did but they did not see the meaning.
Then the man should be publicly prosecuted. That done, the Muslims should sue for peace and the end to the defence manifested in some of the countries as witnessed. The Muslims must remain as indivisible as ever. Let us remain one every time and all the time. Injury against one is injury against all. We should not declare jihad if the subject of dispute is mere politicking, ethinicity or tribal sentiment.
Yet we can remind any attackers that we can defend our being even with our last blood if it has to do with our Faith.
Maa salam.
