The Nigerian Senate includes some of the brightest minds in our country many of whom are friends of mine and most of whom have been in active politics for many years. They have my respect. However what transpired in the Senate chamber a few days ago was a great cause for concern for not just me but millions of Nigerians from all over the world. How an innocent and seemingly uninteresting, uninspiring and unimportant debate about when and at what age a Nigerian citizen could legitimately and lawfully renounce his or her citizenship turned into a referendum on paedophilia and child marriage I dont know. Yet sadly that is precisely what happened and ever since then the nation has been on fire. Senator (ex-Governor) Ahmed Sani, the Yerima Bakura and the Apostle of political sharia in Nigeria finally got his way and the futile attempt by a small number of good, noble and honourable Senators to amend the existing law on marriage and properly define the age of a female that is eligible to marry was thwarted by the pro-paedophilia, pro-child rape and pro-child marriage group within the Senate. Sadly our distinguished Senators eventually bowed to the will of Yerima and his friends and agreed to remain silent about the age that young girls can get married in Nigeria. What this means is that girls that are as young as 9 years old can continue to be lawfully bedded and married in our country providing they are deemed as being ”physically developed enough” to do so by their suitors, their prospective husbands and their parents. That is the law and that is the sordid level that we as a people and as a nation have degenerated to over the years. I weep for Nigeria and, perhaps more appropiately, I weep for the Nigerian girl child. I weep because it is obvious to me that the Yerima’s of this world wish to turn our country into a giant Bangkok to which millions of sexual deviants flock from all over the world to ”enjoy” our ”tourist attractions” and ”have a taste” of our young and beloved children. Worst still they wish to use religion to defend and justify it. Yet we have no choice but to live with this new reality and to accept it as it is. After all, our representatives in the sacred halls of the Senate were not sensitive enough or ”man enough” to shoot down the whole thing, to stand firmly against the unholy agenda and to say boldly and firmly that ”come what may” our children must be protected from sexual deviants and reprobates. And since the Senate, in its infinate wisdom, has now bought into and openly endorsed the “Paedophile Charter” which essentially makes it lawful and constitutional for very young girls to get married and to have sex at a very young age it is my firm view that we have now become a nation of perverts and paedophiles. The Senate had a chance to clear the air and amend the law but, out of nothing but sentiment and an inexplicable eagerness to compromise with that which is clearly evil, they threw that chance away and sacrificed our most sacred values to Yerima and his gang. Worst still they did it with a smile on their faces. Every Nigerian should bow his or her head in shame because instead of crushing the head of the lustful beast that seeks to fornicate with our children, to steal their virtues and to destroy their future what the Senate did the other day was to compromise with and cater for the filthy appetites and godless fantasies of a bunch of child molestors and sexual predators. It is sordid. It is ungodly. It is evil. And it is unforgiveable. read more http://uyocalyaxis.com/a-nation-of-perverts-and-paedophiles-femi-fani-kayode/

Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Amaechi has said he would remain on the path of principle as Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF). He stated this in Port Harcourt on Saturday when staff of the NGF Secretariat under his leadership visited him. Amaechi enjoined the staff to remain neutral in the face of the forum’s current leadership crisis, assuring them of regular salaries. He took advantage of the visit to undertake an unscheduled inspection of some ongoing and completed projects within the state capital. This, according to the governor, was to acquaint them with projects embarked upon and those completed by his government. Some of the projects visited included the Kelsey Harrison 120-bed Hospital, some modern primary schools and the 38,000-seater stadium complex. He expressed displeasure over ``breech of some contract agreement’’ by the handlers of the hospital. He phoned the Commissioner for Health to write the managers to correct the identified breeches or have the contract revoked. Others visited were the ongoing health centre within the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST) complex, the state Conference Centre and some completed road projects. Amaechi called on the contractors to be up to their responsibilities or have their contract re-determined. He said government was constructing 500 modern primary schools across the state, adding that 250 of the schools would be commissioned in October. This, he said, was to address the shortage of primary schools in the state. Mr Asishana Okauru, Director General of the NGF Secretariat who led the staff on the visit, expressed satisfaction with the projects inspected. ``We are very impressed by the institutions and infrastructure on ground here. It shows that Rivers is a modern state,” Okauru said. According to him, the facilities inspected are comparable to those in most advanced countries of the world. http://www.dailytimes.com.ng/article/ngf-amaechi-promises-remain-principled

Dr Mustapha Gaidam, Programme Manager, Yobe Livestock Pilot Development Programme, has said 5.2 million livestock had been vaccinated against various diseases since 2009 in the state. Mustapha told newsmen in Damaturu on Saturday that the state was now targeting 1.7 million cattle, sheep, goats and dogs in the 2013 mass vaccination. He explained that 800,000 herds of cattle were to be vaccinated against Contagious Bovine Pleuro Pneumonia (CBPP) and Black Quarter (BQ). ``Also, 900,000 sheep and goats will be vaccinated against pest de petit ruminantes and 2,500 dogs will be vaccinated against rabies,” he said. The programme manager said arrangement had been concluded to sensitise livestock farmers for mass participation in the vaccination. Gaidam noted that it was necessary to vaccinate the animals because of cross boundary grazing. ``The cross boundary nomadic livestock husbandry practice makes the livestock vulnerable to diseases,” he stressed. He held that to avoid farmer and grazer conflicts, the programme demarcated 945 kilometres of cattle routes and beaconed same to check against encroachment. ``We have consistently cultivated mucuna beans and stylosanthesis in Dilawa, Gumsi, Tarajem, Alagarno, Mashio, Gumsa, Nasari/Jakusko, Gujba and Nguru grazing reserves to promote livestock food supplements,” he said. The manager solicited the cooperation of livestock farmers, opinion leaders and veterinary officers to work for the success of the 2013 vaccination campaign. This, he added, was to ensure increased meat and dairy production in the state.” http://www.dailytimes.com.ng/article/yobe-govt-vaccinates-52m-animals

Newly crowned Miss Nigeria 2013, Akudo Ezinne Anyaoha has joined the growing chorus of voices opposed to the approval of Child Marriage by the Senate at the ongoing Constitution Amendment exercise in the National Assembly. The law graduate of the Abia State University described child marriage as a violation of human rights adding that the girl child should be allowed to live out her childhood instead of being subjected to sexual and physical abuse at such a tender age. "These children are not prepared for the tedious demands of marriage and family life. This kind of law will keep relegating the girl child to the background and will also reduce her chances of being educated in order to liberate herself,” she said. Miss Anyaoha, who was crowned Miss Nigeria earlier this month at a colourful ceremony in Lagos, said further: “Child marriage perpetuates poverty and leads to poor health as children will not only be withdrawn from their peers, but they will have psychological trauma and physical challenges such as Vesicovaginal fistula (VVF).” Miss Nigeria, who will soon launch her pet project and is determined to use her office to fight sexual violence, added that this act is not only harmful to the girl but also to the family, community and the nation as a whole because it stifles development. She therefore enjoined Nigerians to come together in one voice to fight the Senate’s position. "This is the right time for all well meaning Nigerians to come out and speak against this shameful act because it will go a long way to derail the current transformation agenda of the current administration and subsequently place the Nigerian girl far behind her peers across the world. "I want to also use this medium to urge the House of Representative to follow the path of honour by rejecting this particular clause during their Clause - to - Clause consideration of the amended part of the constitution." In recent days the decision of the nation’s upper legislative house on Child Marriage, has seen strong condemnation on various social media like twitter and facebook, with people campaigning for them to have a re-think. http://www.dailytimes.com.ng/article/miss-nigeria-frowns-senates-approval-child-marriage

your topic is really funny. "I My" can u pls explain. |
While some current members of Congress continue to rally for the prosecution of National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden, a long-serving United States senator has sent a letter of support to the NSA contractor-turned-whistleblower. According to correspondence published Tuesday by the Guardian’s Glenn Greenwald, former two-term senator Gordon Humphrey (R-New Hampshire) wrote the exiled Mr. Snowden to say, “you have done the right thing in exposing what I regard as massive violation of the United States Constitution.” Snowden, 31, is currently in Russia where he has applied for temporary asylum while he awaits assistance in traveling to one of the Latin American countries that have approved similar requests. He is wanted for espionage and other charges in the US after fleeing in May and providing Greenwald and other journalists with classified NSA documents detailing vast surveillance programs operated by the US government. The US Department of Justice has asked Russia repeatedly to return Snowden to the US, and his revelations and conduct have caused commotion across Washington and the rest of the world. But while the administration of President Barack Obama continues to insist Snowden is sent back to the US to stand trial, Humphrey has words nowhere near as harsh. “Having served in the United States Senate for twelve years as a member of the Foreign Relations Committee, the Armed Services Committee and the Judiciary Committee, I think I have a good grounding to reach my conclusion,” the former lawmaker wrote. “I wish you well in your efforts to secure asylum and encourage you to persevere,” Humphrey added. When contacted by Greenwald for verification, Humphrey wrote a second letter, which has since been shared by the Guardian journalist. “Yes. It was I who sent the email message to Edward Snowden, thanking him for exposing astonishing violations of the US Constitution and encouraging him to persevere in the search for asylum,” Humphrey wrote Greenwald. “To my knowledge, Mr. Snowden has disclosed only the existence of a program and not details that would place any person in harm's way. I regard him as a courageous whistleblower,” he continued. “I object to the monumentally disproportionate campaign being waged by the US government against Edward Snowden, while no effort is being made to identify, remove from office and bring to justice those officials who have abused power, seriously and repeatedly violating the Constitution of the United States and the rights of millions of unsuspecting citizens.” “Americans concerned about the growing arrogance of our government and its increasingly menacing nature should be working to help Mr. Snowden find asylum. Former Members of Congress, especially, should step forward and speak out,” he concluded. In a letter sent in response from Snowden to the former senator, the NSA leaker thanked Humphrey and wrote, “I only wish more of our lawmakers shared your principles,” adding that “the actions I've taken would not have been necessary” had these conversations occurred years earlier on Capitol Hill. “The media has distorted my actions and intentions to distract from the substance of Constitutional violations and instead focus on personalities,” Snowden wrote. “It seems they believe every modern narrative requires a bad guy. Perhaps it does. Perhaps, in such times, loving one's country means being hated by its government.” “If history proves that be so, I will not shy from that hatred,” he wrote. “I will not hesitate to wear those charges of villainy for the rest of my life as a civic duty, allowing those governing few who dared not do so themselves to use me as an excuse to right these wrongs.” Snowden then went on to reaffirm allegations made previously by Greenwald that classified knowledge of government programs will continue to be released should the US or another government attempt to plug up the leaks. Snowden “has taken extreme precautions to make sure many different people around the world have these archives to insure the stories will inevitably be published,” Greenwald told the Daily Beast last month. “[I]f anything happens at all to Edward Snowden, he told me he has arranged for them to get access to the full archives,” the journalist said. In his letter to Humphrey, Snowden wrote, “You may rest easy knowing I cannot be coerced into revealing that information, even under torture.” Although Humphrey’s sentiments aren’t exactly shared en masse in Washington, that isn’t to say the country at large disapproves of Snowden’s actions. A poll conducted by Quinnipiac University released earlier this month found that the majority of Americans perceive Snowden as a man who did the right thing by releasing documents about the NSA programs to the media. “The verdict that Snowden is not a traitor goes against almost the unified view of the nation’s political establishment,” Peter Brown, assistant director of Quinnipiac’s polling institute, said in a press release. Humphrey, 72, served in the US Senate until 1990, after which point he attempted twice, unsuccessfully, to run for governor of New Hampshire. http://rt.com/usa/snowden-support-letter-humphrey-182/

Former U.S. spy agency contractor Edward Snowden applied for temporary asylum in Russia on Tuesday after three weeks holed up at a Moscow airport trying to avoid prosecution in the United States on espionage charges. Snowden is seeking refuge in Latin America after leaking details of U.S. government surveillance programmes, but has not risked taking any flight that might be intercepted by the United States since flying in from Hong Kong on June 23. "He reached the conclusion that he needs to write an application for temporary asylum (in Russia), and this procedure has just been done," Anatoly Kucherena, a lawyer who met Snowden on Friday along with human rights activists, told Reuters. "For now he is not going to go anywhere. For now he plans to stay in Russia," he said, adding that if Snowden were granted temporary asylum, he should have the same rights as other citizens and be free to work and travel in Russia. The asylum application could end his time in limbo but risks deepening tension between the United States and Russia, which has refused to expel him to his homeland for prosecution. The head of Russia's Federal Migration Service (FMS) confirmed the agency had received Snowden's application. Anti-secrecy group Wikileaks, which has been helping Snowden, said on Twitter that he had applied for "a temporary protection visa". Snowden, 30, is trapped in the transit zone of Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport, an area between the runway and passport control which Russia regards as neutral territory. He said on Friday he would seek refuge in Russia only until he can travel to one of the three Latin American countries ready to give him political asylum - Bolivia, Venezuela and Nicaragua. He said the United States and its allies were preventing him from reaching those countries. Washington has revoked Snowden's passport and urged other nations not to help him reach an asylum destination. Kucherena said he expected a decision on Snowden's asylum request "soon", though the Federal Migration Service has up to three months to decide on the application. http://www.dnaindia.com/world/1861883/report-edward-snowden-seeks-temporary-asylum-in-russia

Eight children died and 80 others were hospitalised after eating lunch at their school in Bihar state in northeast India. State administrator Abhijit Sinha confirmed the deaths, which occurred in Saran district. The children, all younger than 10, had been served a meal of rice and lentils cooked at the school in Masrakh village. "It is a matter of uncertainty why some of the children died while others survived after consuming the midday meal," Abhijit Sinha said. The chief minister of Bihar state, Nitish Kumar, has ordered an immediate investigation and sent a team of forensic experts to the school. Television pictures showed sick children lying on wooden tables in a state-run hospital. Compensation is being offered to the parents of the dead children but local media said hundreds of people took to the streets to vent their anger and demand action against teachers and officials. Indian news service IANS claims that government guidelines on food quality are often ignored in Bihar state because of corruption in the school meal service. It reported that dead lizards, frogs, insects and a rat have been found in school meals in the past. Bihar is considered one of India's poorest states and is also one of its most populous. Free school meals are very popular in India and seen as a way of increasing attendance.[video] http://news.sky.com/story/1116545/india-school-dinner-blamed-for-eight-deaths Someone should give this news to that governor giving food to school children in one of the states in Nigeria. |
It was an embarrassing and unexpected welcome for the Northern governors who were in Rivers State on a solidarity visit to the embattled Governor of the state, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi. Governors Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano State, Sule Lamido of Jigawa State, Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State and Babangida Aliyu of Niger State had upon their arrival at the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, met the presence of angry looking youths. Our Correspondent reports that the protesters, mostly members of the Grassroots Development Initiative (GDI,) a group formed by the Minister of State for Education, Nyesom Wike were seen armed with machetes, iron bars, sticks and bottles. They also carried placards with various inscriptions such as: “Amaechi must go”, “Amaechi is a psycho”, “Northern governors leave us alone”, “We don’t want APC in Rivers State”, and “Wole Soyinka is no longer learned”. However, some youths loyal to Amaechi later stormed the area and engaged the protesters in a free-for-all injuring themselves. Also, the motorcade of the governors met a barricade of bricks, water bottles and sticks, even as the protesters pelted the cars, smashing one of the SUVs. They, however, got to the Government House safe, and held a closed-door meeting with Amaechi. In a chat with Journalists, the Rivers state commissioner for Information confirmed the incident at the airport. She said the drama at the airport was yet another move by Governor Amaechi’s antagonists to further provoke the governor into retaliation so as to avail a reason to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State. Semenitari said, “This is very disconcerting. It is a rather curious development in our democracy. We must not throw away the baby with the bath water because we have a democracy that we have all fought so hard for. Actions like what happened today have a way of derailing our democracy. “I believe that certain persons had hoped there will be retaliation, but Governor Amaechi displayed maturity and calmness. You can imagine if he also had asked for people to be mobilized, the kind of clash we would have seen”. She added that: “This appears to lay credence to the fact that some people are anxious to have a State of Emergency in Rivers state especially when you go by the utterances credited to certain persons in certain quarters, begging to forment trouble”. http://dailypost.com.ng/2013/07/16/northern-governors-get-violent-welcome-in-rivers-state/

Nigeria was accused Tuesday of joining the ranks of African nations defying the International Criminal Court when it refused to detain Sudan’s president, Omar Al Bashir, during an official visit. The ICC said it “expected” and “requested” Nigeria to arrest Mr. Bashir during his time in the country for an African Union health summit. He faces ten charges including genocide at the world court. Instead of detaining and surrendering him to the ICC, Nigeria’s government laid out a red carpet welcome with full military honors when he arrived late Sunday. He was then allowed to leave Nigeria Monday night. http://www.csmonitor.com/World/Africa/2013/0716/Nigeria-blasted-by-Hague-court-for-not-arresting-Sudan-s-Bashir

Worst bachelor party ever? A British groom-to-be was "kidnapped" by his friends in a terrifying bachelor party prank that left him so traumatized he developed shingles, The Sun reported Saturday. Ollie McAninch and his fiancee Clair Hart were driving in England when 16 masked men ambushed the car with baseball bats and smoke grenades. While Hart screamed (she was in on the prank), the gang dressed McAninch in a jumpsuit, tied him up and put him in the back of a van. They silently drove more than 100 miles before revealing themselves to McAninch, but the prank wasn't over yet. The group then forced McAninch to put on a "Borat"-style "mankini" and bike 10 miles to the actual bachelor party (which McAninch thought was the following week). Afterwards, McAninch developed shingles, a painful rash caused by the same virus as chicken pox that can be activated by stress. However, he said he has forgiven Hart and his friends. “I’ve logged it for future vengeance," McAninch said. A similar stunt was pulled in Maryland last year, which led a witness who thought the kidnapping was real to call the police. http://screen.yahoo.com/groom-gets-shingles-bachelor-party-222005255.html |
An 8-month-old boy in China was found swimming in a pool of his own blood, moments after his mother stabbed him 90 times with scissors. The gruesome scene unfolded this week when little Xiao Bao's uncle found him bleeding in the back yard, then rushed him to the hospital in eastern China's Jiangsu Province, the International Business Times reported. He received more than 100 stitches and is in stable condition. Bao's mother, who wasn't immediately identified, allegedly attacked the boy when he bit her during breastfeeding. Photos show Bao with stitches all over his face, feet and legs. He can be seen sleeping and then sitting up and looking off into the distance, with bandages on his head and neck. PHOTO (Story continues below): Neighbors have asked the local government to take the baby away from his mother, but that request was denied, the Daily Mail reported. Bao's two uncles -- who make a living selling recyclables -- have reportedly agreed to watch over the boy, according to The Mirror. It's not clear whether the mother was arrested or charged. There are reports that the local government is looking into whether the mom suffers from mental illness. If charged and convicted, the mom will likely spend the rest of her life in prison, according to the Daily Mail and International Business Times. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/07/12/baby-stabbed-90-times_n_3587371.html
