Foreign Affairs / Israeli Strikes Flatten Buildings, Mosques In Gaza by neolboy(m): 6:04pm On Oct 08, 2023
Death toll rises to 313 in Gaza, with close to 2,000 wounded, as tensions continue to escalate on the second day.

At least 313 Palestinians have been killed as Israel struck 426 targets in Gaza, its military said, flattening residential buildings in giant explosions.

Among those killed in Gaza were 20 children. About 2,000 others are wounded, the Palestinian Ministry of Health said.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) said more than 20,000 Palestinians left Gaza’s border region to head further inside the territory and take refuge in UN schools.

Nebal Farsakh, the spokesperson of the NGO Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRC), told Al Jazeera that their medical teams were facing “great challenges” in Gaza, adding that they had called on the international humanitarian community to open humanitarian corridors so that NGOs like them could safely carry out their work of helping people in the Gaza Strip.

On Saturday night, Energy Minister Israel Katz said Israel would halt the electricity supply to the besieged territory. The Palestinian enclave – home to some two million people – has been under an Israeli air, land and sea blockade.

Al Jazeera’s Youmna ElSayed said humanitarian conditions in the Gaza Strip were in “constant deterioration”.

What used to be 120 megawatts of electricity has now decreased to only 20MW, provided by power plants that are paid for by the Palestinian Authority, ElSayed said.

Meanwhile, healthcare institutions had to rely on spare generators to continue operating through the night due to Israel’s decision to halt the electricity supply while residents were left to endure the darkness with the unsettling backdrop of explosions not far away

Foreign Affairs / Israel-palestine Escalation Live: Gaza Under Bombardment After Hamas Attack by neolboy(m): 4:30pm On Oct 07, 2023
Fighting ongoing at 22 locations near Gaza: Israeli military spokesman
The spokesman said fighting was ongoing at nearly a dozen locations near the division between Gaza and Israel, according to Reuters news agency.

He said Israeli soldiers and commanders have been killed and prisoners of war have been taken.

Israel launches missile at tower near Al Jazeera team
The Israeli military has launched an air raid on the Gaza Strip which hit a tower right behind Al Jazeera’s team in the besieged enclave.

Youmna ElSayed was reporting live for Al Jazeera when a missile struck a building called Palestine Tower behind her. The building is in the heart of Gaza City.

Lots of bombing everywhere’: Gaza resident
Gaza resident Ibrahim Yaghi has told Al Jazeera his neighbourhood has been under constant bombardment by Israeli forces since this morning, spreading fear across the besieged territory.

“There is lots of bombing everywhere. Our children and women are very afraid. They’re afraid of losing their dreams, their lives,” he said.

Yaghi said him and his family were forced to flee and seek shelter in a nearby home.

Nurse, ambulance worker killed in Gaza atacks: MSF
The humanitarian organisation said Israeli attacks had hit the Indonesian hospital and an ambulance in front of the Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza.

“The strikes killed one nurse, one ambulance driver, injured several and damaged an oxygen station,” MSF said on X.

“Health care facilities cannot become targets. We ask all parties to respect health infrastructures, which must remain a sanctuary for people seeking treatment,” the group said.

Foreign Affairs / How Did Israeli Intelligence Fail To Stop Major Attack From Gaza? by neolboy(m): 4:21pm On Oct 07, 2023
We have no idea how this could have happened."

That is the reaction Israeli officials have been giving today when I ask them how, with all its vast resources, Israeli intelligence did not see this attack coming.

Dozens of armed Palestinian gunmen were able to cross the heavily fortified border between Israel and the Gaza Strip, while thousands of rockets were fired from Gaza into Israel.

With the combined efforts of Shin Bet, Israeli domestic intelligence, Mossad, its external spy agency and all the assets of the Israel Defense Forces, it is frankly astounding that nobody saw this coming.

Or if they did, they failed to act on it.
It has informants and agents inside Palestinian militant groups, as well as in Lebanon, Syria and elsewhere.

It has, in the past, carried out precisely timed assassinations of militant leaders, knowing all their movements intimately.

Sometimes these have been done with drone strikes, after agents have placed a GPS tracker on an individual's car; sometimes in the past it has even used exploding mobile phones.

On the ground, along the tense border fence between Gaza and Israel there are cameras, ground-motion sensors and regular army patrols.

The barbed-wire topped fence is supposed to have been a "smart barrier" to prevent exactly the sort of infiltration that has taken place in this attack.

Yet the militants of Hamas simply bulldozed their way through it, cut holes in the wire or entered Israel from the sea and by paraglider.

To prepare for and carry out such a coordinated, complex attack involving the stockpiling and firing of thousands of rockets, right under the noses of the Israelis, must have taken extraordinary levels of operational security by Hamas.

Not surprisingly the Israeli media has been asking urgent questions of their country's military and political leaders as to how all this could have occurred, on the 50th anniversary of another surprise attack by Israel's enemies at the time: the Yom Kippur war of October 1973.

Israeli officials tell me a major investigation has begun and questions, they say, "will go on for years".

But right now Israel has more pressing priorities. It needs to contain and suppress the infiltration of its southern borders, removing those Hamas militants who have taken control of several communities on the Israeli side of the border fence.

It will need to address the issue of its own citizens who have been taken captive, either through an armed rescue mission or by negotiation.

It will try to eliminate the launch sites for all those rockets being fired into Israel, an almost impossible task of whack-a-mole as they can be launched from almost anywhere with little notice.

And perhaps the biggest worry for Israel is this: how does it stop others responding to Hamas's call to arms and avoid this conflagration spreading into the West Bank and possibly even draw in the heavily-armed fighters of Hezbollah across its northern border with Lebanon?

…Apapa seeking to scuttle Obi’s petition against Tinubu —Abure

…Puts judiciary, DSS, Police, others on notice
…It’s cheap blackmail — Apapa

By John Alechenu, ABUJA

The mud-fight between the Comrade Julius Abure and Lamidi Apapa factions of the Labour Party, LP, may hurt the petition of the party’s presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, against the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, if mishandled.

The crisis rocking the LP took a fresh dimension, yesterday, following allegations by the Comrade Abure-led faction that the Apapa faction had approached tribunals seeking to withdraw all cases involving the party’s candidates challenging the outcome of the 2023 general elections.

The party leadership loyal to Abure raised the alarm over an alleged plot by the Apapa-led faction to scuttle its ongoing challenge to the electoral process, which led to the declaration of the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu as president-elect.

Acting National Publicity Secretary of the party, Pastor Obiora Ifoh, raised the alarm in a statement.

‘Cheap publicity ploy’

However, the Apapa-led faction in response dismissed the claim, stating that it was a ploy by Abure to gain cheap public sympathy.

Spokesman for the Apapa faction, Comrade Abayomi Arabambi, told Vanguard over the telephone that the attempt to distract public attention from the real issues will fail.
The LP Presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, his running mate, Dr Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed and the party are currently before the Presidential Election Tribunal seeking to nullify Tinubu’s mandate.

Ifoh said: “Daily, the evil intention of the breakaway faction of the Labour Party, led by the suspended Deputy National Chairman, Lamidi Apapa, continues to manifest and just this morning, our legal team was confronted by the stark revelation that these men have advanced their plot by approaching all the tribunals where our numerous candidates lodged their election petitions arising from the recently held general elections to discontinue the cases

“Alongside Lamidi Apapa on the plot to frustrate Labour Party’s destined victory at the tribunals and also to derail the fledgling democracy are some of the suspended members including the Samuel Akingbade, Gbenga Daramola, Anselm Eragbe and Abayomi Arabambi erstwhile National Legal Adviser, National Financial Secretary, National Youth Leader and National Publicity Secretary respectively among others.

“Recall that the leadership of the Labour Party has been swimming through the murky waters of conspiracy, treachery and sabotage orchestrated by these former officers of the party.
“We had long suspected that moles were planted to sabotage the efforts of the party to offer Nigerians an alternative to the wicked and clueless governance in place today, but the desperation to satisfy their paymasters is beginning to threaten our common peace and of course our democracy.

“Approaching the tribunals to withdraw all the cases lodged by Labour Party candidates across the board is the height of subterfuge and treachery, and Nigerians will resist this ploy to plunge the nation into unnecessary turmoil.
“Their actions show that they are working against the party and that they are working to destroy the party.

Apapa seeking to scuttle Obi’s petition against Tinubu

“If they claim that they have a problem with the national leadership of the party, will they also claim that they have a problem with the candidates of the party? What offence have the candidates of the party committed that they are now moving around to withdraw their matters from the tribunals?”

He further said: “The leadership of the Labour Party is therefore calling on the tribunals to disregard any letter emanating from our suspended National Legal Adviser, Samuel Akingbade to the effect that all our cases are to be withdrawn.
“We are also calling on the presidential election tribunal to disregard such letters from these ex-officials of our party asking for the withdrawal of Peter Obi’s petition.

Abure puts judiciary, DSS, Police, and others on notice

“We also call on the Police, DSS and EFCC to quickly apprehend and question these agents of destruction before they succeed in igniting the nation.”

The party leadership loyal to Comrade Julius Abure equally noted that the appointment of Pastor Ifoh as Acting National Publicity Secretary followed due process as enshrined in the party’s constitution.

“All stakeholders including the state chairmen and their secretaries, zonal officers, owners and trustees of the party including NLC and TUC, some elected members of the party as well as the leader and presidential candidate of the party among others met in Asaba on April 18, where I was elected as the National Publicity Secretary due to the vacancy that occurred after the expulsion of the former National Publicity Secretary in line with the powers conferred on it.

“Article 14(2) b Section XIV of the Labour Party Constitution on the Powers and Function of the NEC states “To fill vacancies in the NWC as they may occur from time to time in between National Convention.

“Also Section XV states: ‘To take disciplinary action against any member or organ of the party as it may seem fit in the interest of the party.’

“All relevant government agencies including NEC were present where I was unanimously elected. It is even ludicrous that an imposter, who committed a crime and forged signatures upon which he has been suspended over six months ago, is turning around to calling people imposters. I wonder who the imposter is here.”

It’s cheap blackmail — Apapa

Responding, Arabambi said: “It is sad, unfortunate and disheartening that individuals who have been stopped by a court of competent jurisdiction from parading themselves as leaders of our beloved party have resorted to cheap blackmail and subterfuge.
“Abure and his cohorts cannot speak for our party and as I speak to you, we have not filed any matter seeking to discontinue our party’s challenge to the outcome of the Presidential election. It is not true.”

Makurdi — Benue State chapter of Labour Party, LP, has confirmed the murder of its chairman, Mr. Nathaniel Ochoche, in an ambush by suspected armed herdsmen in Ankpali village, Edikwu District of Apa Local Government Area of the state.

Ochoche was said to be among the four mourners, who were killed, the weekend, in an ambush that left many injured and several others still missing.

LP in a statement in Makurdi by its state Publicity Secretary, Mr. Tersoo Orbunde, said the deceased was the Edikwu Ward 2 Chairman of the party in Apa LGA.
The statement read: “It is with rude shock that the Benue State Secretariat of the Labour Party received the news of the murder of its Chairman in Edikwu Ward 2 in Apa council, Nathaniel Ochoche, who was ambushed and killed by armed Fulani militia.

“Until his death, Ochoche was a consummate party man, who worked assiduously hard for the growth of his community, constituency and country both in words and works.

“The Benue State Executive Committee of the Labour Party sends it deepest condolence to the wife, children and the entire family members of the deceased over this terrible and unfortunate incident.

“As a party, with people centred programme, we condemn in its totality the continuous callous acts of armed Fulani militia. We, therefore, call on the federal and state governments, and all relevant authorities and stakeholders to rise up to the occasion of protecting the lives and properties of the people and stop the unwarranted killings by suspected criminal Fulani herdsmen.

Omeiza Ajayi, Abuja

The ruling All Progressives Congress APC has asked the Labour Party LP and its Presidential Candidate, Mr Peter Obi to focus their attention on cleaning the mess in the opposition party and not seek to drag it in.

APC in a statement by its spokesman, Felix Morka on Saturday said it was not responsible for the crisis in the LP and that it also has no hand in allegations of trying to force Obi into exile.

“With legs deep in quicksand, the embattled National Chairman of the Labour Party LP, Julius Abure, clawing desperately in search of firmer ground, baselessly blames the All Progressives Congress APC for his sinking and dysfunctional Party. In his irrational outburst, Mr. Abure accused the APC of colluding with police and other security agencies to invade and seize LP’s national secretariat and staging a crisis in that party”, said Morka.

He said the total vindication of APC of any involvement in LP’s imbroglio was swiftly and categorically delivered by Mr. Abure’s successor and Acting National Chairman of LP, Mr. Lamidi Apapa, who exonerated it of any interference in the party’s raging internal crisis.

LP Crisis: We’re not responsible for your troubles — APC tells Peter Obi

He said the total vindication of APC of any involvement in LP’s imbroglio was swiftly and categorically delivered by Mr. Abure’s successor and Acting National Chairman of LP, Mr. Lamidi Apapa, who exonerated it of any interference in the party’s raging internal crisis.

“He clarified that the reported situation at the LP headquarters was a result of a legal process arising from the orders of a Federal Capital Territory High Court that barred Mr. Abure and other national officers of the party from parading themselves as such.

“The LP’s morbid obsession with APC is unfathomable and infantile, blaming APC for all its internal woes. Mr Abure’s bogus claim follows Mr Peter Obi’s unsubstantiated and vexatious claim that he was being hounded into exile by our party.

“To be clear, APC is not responsible for Mr Abure’s travails. He will do well to focus his thin attention and energy on dealing with the many allegations of criminal conduct of forgery and financial impropriety leveled against him by his own party.

“While the LP continues to grapple with its myriad of woes and crying wolf where none exists, the APC will stay focused and committed to forming a new government to be led by the visionary President-Elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as he drives the Renewed Hope agenda, and consolidate on the many gains of the out-going President Buhari-administration”, the APC added.

Politics / Democracy: Baba-ahmed Will Not Debate With Soyinka – Labour Party by neolboy(m): 7:19pm On Apr 08, 2023
The Labour Party, LP, said the party’s Vice-presidential candidate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed will not engage in a debate with Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka.

The party stated this in a statement signed by the Chief Spokesperson of its Presidential Campaign Council (LP-PCC), Yunusa Tanko on Saturday.

The statement reads, “Like many Nigerians we are bewildered by the late hour intervention of our respected Nobel laureate Prof Wole Soyinka in issues around the flawed 2023 elections. Where was he all this while?

“One of those who should ordinarily and rightfully be honoured as the conscience of the nation, Prof. Soyinka is now criminalising dissent and infact weighing in on the side of fraud and injustice!
“We state therefore that the vice-presidential candidate of Labour Party, Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed cannot take up Prof. Soyinka’s offer of a public debate, not out of cowardice, but for cultural and political reasons.
“Culturally it’s just not decent, their age and accomplishment gaps taken into account, for Datti to sit opposite the 88 year-old global icon and point out his folly to his face, even if the old man called for it. And politically there is no basis for such a challenge in that Prof. is not on any of the opposite ballots.

“If however he can use his influence to drag his preferred candidates, who resisted debates throughout the campaign, to the studio this second, Datti says he is more than willing to take them on,” Tanko said.

Recall that the Nobel laureate had earlier challenged Baba-Ahmed to a one-on-one debate on Channels Television regarding the nation’s democracy.

Soyinka, in a statement titled “Fascism on Course,” released on Friday, challenged the LP’s vice-presidential candidate to a debate as regards his claims of Nigeria’s democracy ending if the President-elect, Asiwasju Bola Tinubu, is sworn in May 29.

Soyinka had stated, “May I seize this opportunity, by the way, to condemn the sanctions imposed on CHANNELS Television which anchored the performance of the LP candidate
“As stated, I watched the programme keenly – saw the valiant efforts of the interviewer to ensure fair hearing.

“I fail to understand just where the station could be faulted, except from a disposition for injustice. To sustain that penalty is to give joy to others who turn Internet into a soakaway for their rancid emissions, yet feel that others should be silenced.

“If CHANNELS feels up to it, I offer myself willing to engage Mr. Datti – or any nominee of his – on its platform on this very bone of contention – one-on-one – without the malodorous intervention of media trolls, and with the same interviewer as mediator.

“That should be taken as a serious offer,” Soyinka had said.

Akwa Ibom-based Danish aid worker, Anja Ringgren Loven, has celebrated the accomplishments of a young girl rescued by her team ten years ago after she was branded a witch.

Taking to Facebook on Thursday, April 6, 2023, the founder of Land of Hope, shared before and after photos of Charity, who was rescued on April 5th, 2013.

According to the humanitarian, Charity was accused of being a witch, ostracized by her family and community. She begged for food during the day and at night, slept in an abandoned house.

"Yesterday was VERY special. It was exactly 10 years ago Land of Hope Director of Child Development Nsidibe Orok and I found Charity in an abandoned house," Ms Loven wrote.

"Charity was accused of being a witch and outcasted by her family and the entire community. She begged for food during the day and in the night she slept in the abandoned house on the dirty ground. When we found her she was wearing a Chelsea football jersey many sizes too big for her. It was the only clothing she had. I remember how her body appeared like a fragile feather.

"She was severely malnourished, beaten and abused. What happened to Charity during those years of struggle and immense pain belongs to the past. Today Charity has become such a strong and Independent young women and next year she will start university. All thanks to your amazing love and support.

"5th of April 2013 we rescued Charity. 5th of April 2023 we dressed up to celebrate Charity’s development and accomplishments."
