Crime / Court Remands Suspects In Murder Of Vacationing Canadian Student (photos) by Newphiligeek123: 7:39pm On Aug 16, 2022
The police have arrested some more persons who allegedly assisted Safina Mohammed Adizatu, a student and Michael Fiifi Ampofo Arku, a Technical Officer at the Centre for Scientific and Indistrial Research, Kumasi, to murder Frank Kofi Osei at Ashalley Botwe School Junction in Accra.

Osei, a Ghanaian a Canadian resident, was in the country for a vacation when he was murdered in July this year.

Prosecuting Chief Inspector Jacob Nyarko has, therefore, prayed the Madina District Court to grant them two weeks adjournment to enable the police arrest more suspects believed to be connected to the case.

According to him, the police suspected that the offence could not have been executed by the two accused persons alone. The court presided over by Linda Amissah remanded Safina, aka Safina Diamond and Arku.

This is the second time the two have been remanded. The two accused persons are expected to reappear on August 26.

Safina also known as Safina Diamond on social media and Arku are said to have stabbed the deceased several times on his chin, jaw, back and strangled him to death.

Charged with conspiracy and murder, the two accused persons in the company of their respective lawyers, had their pleas reserved.
Narrating the facts, the prosecution led by Chief Inspector Jacob Nyarko said Safina was a 23-year-old level 100 student of the University of Ghana and Arku, a Technical Officer of the Crop Research Institute, Kumasi.

Chief Inspector Nyarko said Osei, now deceased was a Ghanaian domiciled in Canada, who was in Ghana on vacation.
On July 24, 2022, the prosecution said Osei visited Safina, his fiancé who resided at Ashalley Botwe School Junction and decided to spend the night there.

The prosecution said at night, Safina and Arku together with others yet to be identified stabbed Osei several times with a knife on his chin, jaw, back and strangled him to death.

It said Safina and Arku cleaned up the blood, while the deceased was in the room for a 24-hour period.

According to the prosecution, the accused persons later dragged the deceased from the first floor of the storey building through the staircase and dumped him at the gate of the house near where the deceased had parked his Toyota Tundra and washed the blood stains off the staircase.

"On July 26, this year, at about 0400 hours, Safina called a police officer saying that her boyfriend visited her, and he had died in her room."
The prosecution said the police officer called the Police Patrol Team who rushed to the scene and found the body of the deceased lying at the gate of Safina’s house, but (she) Safina and Arku were nowhere to be found.

It said the police later traced Safina to Ashalley Botwe School Junction and arrested her. The prosecution said Arku after committing the act, absconded to Kumasi.

It said efforts were underway to apprehend other accomplices on the run.

what was he doing with a firearm?! if indeed an accident, why did he initially lie about it?
Crime / 12-year-old Accidentally Kills Nigerian Mom In The US (pics) by Newphiligeek123: 8:45pm On Aug 10, 2022
A 12-year-old boy has confessed to accidentally shooting his mother, a Nigerian woman, after initially claiming an intruder killed her in their US home.

Ayobiyi Cook, a 29-year-old registered nurse who friends called ‘Yo-Yo’, was found dead in the family’s Forestdale, Alabama home, on the 2400 block of Freemont Avenue after midnight on August 6.

Her son had originally told police that an intruder had entered their house, shot his mother and then ran away.

“The child originally fabricated a story that detectives determined was not possible,” Deputy Chief David Agee said.

“After investigation, Sheriff’s Detectives were able to determine that the victim’s 12-year-old son unintentionally discharged a firearm striking his mother causing her death.

“After more probing, the boy finally changed his story. “The child eventually gave a true account of what happened,” Agee said.

“Evidence on the scene supports that the shooting was unintentional, and the offense will be addressed through the Family Court system.

Afrotimes Newspaper reports that the funeral for the slain mom will be held on August 12 at the Faith Memorial Chapel in Bessmer, Alabama.

Crime / 4-year-old Nigerian Girl Struck And Killed By Train In Ontario, Canada -pics by Newphiligeek123: 5:03pm On Aug 05, 2022
The father of a Nigerian four-year-old girl who was struck and killed by a GO train in Mississauga, Ontario Canada. last week is speaking out for the first time since the accident.

Emmanuel Nwabuoku said on Tuesday that his daughter, Mitchell, was fatally struck by a train last week while she out playing with her siblings. Nwabuoku is not only dealing with the loss of his child but the loss of his mother who died two days prior to Mitchell's death.

"Mitchell is an angel, she talks like an angel. Mitchell acts like an angel," Nwabuoku said. He said his daughter left the apartment with her older siblings to go down to get ice cream at the park.

"Just only 15 minutes later, we received the call that she can no longer breathe and we rushed out immediately," Nwabuoku said.
At around 7:40 p.m., emergency responders were called to the area of Dundas Street and Cawthra Road for reports of a child who was struck by a GO train.

Emmanuel says his children were chasing a butterfly before his youngest daughter walked through a path and onto the train tracks where she was struck by an incoming train.

"They said they followed a butterfly. They were playing in the park and they chased the butterfly to that spot. I couldn't talk, I didn't hear any other thing. Only for me to see my daughter lifeless on the floor," he said.

Shortly before 9 p.m., Peel police confirmed Mitchell was pronounced dead at the scene.

Metrolinx, which operates the GO train service, said about 300 passengers were on board the train when the child was struck.
A witness, who owns a nearby garage, told CP24 the day after the accident he was working when he heard a train honking its horn and a loud screech of a railway brake.

"When I came out of my garage, I see the train stopped. This has never happened before," Muhammad Tayyab said.
"Three kids were screaming and crying very loudly. I got shocked. I ran there... I see the body, there was one kid on the side…They were wounded very badly."

Residents in the area spoke to Afrotimes Newspaper after the incident and said the lack of barriers to the train tracks is a known issue and that it's not uncommon to see people crossing the tracks.

Mitchell was born in 2017 in Dallas, Texas, and her family moved to Canada in 2018.

Nwabuoku said she was a happy child who brought joy to everyone's lives. "Mitchell is a lively person. Mitchell is a cheerful person. Mitchell has touched lives... Mitchell cannot sleep without giving everybody a hug. Mitchell cannot do anything without giving daddy a kiss. Because Mitchell is daddy's princess. Mitchell is everything to us," he said.

He added he has no words to explain the pain of losing his child but thanked everyone for their love and support. "What can I say…I know what it means to lose a child. For those weeping for us, God will comfort every one of us." The funeral for Mitchell was held in Mississauga at the Turner & Porter funeral home Tuesday morning.

A spokesperson for Metrolinx said on Tuesday that an investigation is ongoing and that their "thoughts remain with the family and loved ones of the young child."

Crime / Re: Nigerian Woman Opens Fire At Dallas USA Airport, Is Shot And Arrested (pics) by Newphiligeek123: 1:47pm On Aug 05, 2022
Newphiligeek123:
A 37-year-old Nigerian woman, Portia Odufuwa was taken into custody on Monday after she fired several rounds inside Dallas Love Field Airport in Texas and was shot and injured by a police officer, the authorities said.

The woman was dropped off at the airport just before 11 a.m. and appeared to change her clothes in a restroom before emerging and opening fire inside the airport, Chief Eddie Garcia of the Dallas Police Department said at a news conference on Monday afternoon.
A Dallas police officer inside the airport shot her, striking her “in the lower extremities,” and she was arrested and taken to a hospital, Chief Garcia said. Her condition was not immediately clear on Monday afternoon.

It was unclear whom or what the woman was aiming at when she fired. Chief Garcia said that the officer fired several rounds at her after she began shooting.

The Police Department said that she had fired a weapon several times in a ticket counter area of the airport.

No other injuries were reported, the police said, but the shooting sent travelers scrambling for cover and delayed several flights.
Before the airport shooting, Odufuwa had racked up a string of arrests for arson, robbery, criminal trespass and false reporting across North Texas.

In April 2021, she was accused of pulling the fire alarm at a Mesquite hotel after staffers refused to extend her stay. When police asked for her address, she allegedly gave that of musician Chris Brown’s mansion.

In October 2019, Odufuwa allegedly set a house on fire, but the Dallas County District Attorney’s office declined to press charges due to a lack of scientific evidence. After telling police she was “responsible for the fire,” she said she had set the blaze because “I am God’s prophet,” according to an arrest affidavit sighted by Afrotimes Newspaper.

She also allegedly told officers that she wouldn’t say anything else until she talked to Chris Brown, who she claimed as her husband.

Travel / Mass Resignation Hit Nigerian Companies As Thousands Set To Immigrate This Month by Newphiligeek123: 2:50pm On Aug 03, 2022
• Experts project resignations and job openings will reach record highs in August and September 2022.

• Thousands are leaving the country this month visa study visas in countries like Canada and the United Kingdom.

They stuck it out during the #ENDSARS protest of 2020.

Then they endured nearly eight years of economic hardship and insecurity. But this year, they say they’ve had enough.

This is the case for thousands Nigerian youths leaving the country in droves in 2022 — not because they want to, but because bad leadership, socio-economic issues, inflation and lack of opportunities are pushing them to leave.

Suddenly, lifestyle blogs and social media posts, once dominated by topics about the country’s best sites to visit, foods to try, etc., are focusing on travelling to-do lists and guides.

According to reports, a surge in departures is accelerating a “brain drain” of professional talent — a situation which will hit a fever pitch in the coming months as foreign schools resume academic activities in Q3 2022.

The trigger - echoed by numerous people - is that there is no hope for Nigeria. Life is already difficult for many to see their way out of poverty.

And when you add socio-economic issues like police harassment and exploitation by SARS, and EFCC, they become desperate to “JAPA”.

According to a Nairametrics survey of HR operators obtained by Afrotimes Newspaper, the sales and marketing department of many Nigerian companies recorded the highest number of resignations in July, followed by employees in the core operations section of the business.

Another survey conducted by Leadership NG found that the resignation has affected the banking industry the most, such that it came up as an issue for discussion at the Bankers’ Committee meeting held in April this year.

According to the report, “It was learnt that about 500 software engineers have, since the beginning of this year, till now, secured better offers abroad, majorly in Canada and European countries where the emolument far outweighs what they are being paid in the Nigerian banking sector as they are paid in foreign currency at a time the nation’s Naira has seriously depreciated.”

“Aside from these 500 engineers, about 1,000 other staff have so far resigned their appointments in deposit money banks to pick up juicy offers abroad, even as there are indications that more engineers and bank staff will also join them in the months ahead as the nation’s economy becomes harsher and the operating environment becomes unbearable.”

“For the Information and Communication sector, the story is not so different as many tech developers are either leaving Nigeria in search of ICT job that pays better or working remotely.”

Travel / Canada Denies Yemi Alade Visa Over Fears ‘she Won’t Return To Nigeria by Newphiligeek123: 12:25am On Jul 25, 2022
Popular Nigeria musician, Yemi Alade, and her music band have been denied Canadian visa over fears that she and her crew may not leave the country after their performance.

As a result, the singer won’t be performing at a Festival’s final closing ceremony slated for Sunday.

The 33-year-old Afropop star is said to be one of the headliners of the Festival international Nuits d’Afrique.
Commenting on the development, Suzanne Rousseau, the festival co-founder, said the visa denial was due to financial reasons, and for fears that the group wouldn’t leave Canada.

“Finally, we got an answer saying the musicians were refused, saying they have to guarantee that they have enough financial means that will make them go back to their country,” she said.

With Yemi’s absence, Suzanne has stated that the singer would be replaced at the festival by Sampa The Great, a Zambian-born Australia-based singer.

Travel / Nigerian US Embassy Staff Calls Cops On Fellow Countryman Selling Food -pics by Newphiligeek123: 2:41pm On Jul 22, 2022
A US based business owner, Godshelter Oluwalogbon, has accused the Head of Chancery, Nigerian Consulate, New York, United States, Benjamin Olafaju, of using the police in New York to harass him and his business.

In a video seen by Afrotimes Newspaper, the businessman stated that Olafaju called the New York Police Department on him for parking his food truck on a lane authorised for such by the state.

According to him, the first confrontation happened on Tuesday, July 5, 2022, at 42nd and 2nd Avenue, Midtown Manhattan, New York.

Speaking in the video, Oluwalogbon said, “Benjamin, who’s the Head of Chancery inside the Nigerian Embassy, came up with a story… he actually called the cops to come and remove a Nigerian food cart from the front of the Nigerian Embassy, that the cart was a security threat.
“The cops came and told him that that part of the street belonged to New York City and that as long as the cart was permitted with somebody inside, they could not do anything. So, he failed.

“On Friday, I was at the spot, a detective from NYPD came to me and my team, saying somebody called him from the Mayor’s office that this cart is not allowed to vend on Second Avenue.”

Oluwalogbon said when he explained that his cart was not the only one trading in the area, the detective opened up to him that it was Olafaju that called him for the assignment.

While lamenting in the video, Oluwalogbon stated that Olafaju, who ought to promote Nigerian businesses in the US as an official of the Nigerian Embassy, was seeking to pull him down.

Oluwalogbon revealed that the official once patronised his business.

He said, “I have not met him personally, but he was at the cart about six weeks ago. He came to the cart to buy food; that was how he had the opportunity to meet my wife.

“The first problem he had was that the camera in our cart was looking at the office where he stayed; that the direction of the camera should be turned.

My wife made him know that there were cameras all over the city and asked to know how that particular camera was affecting him.”
Oluwalogbon said weeks later, Olafaju called the police on his business.

He said, “If anybody has to remove the cart, it has to be the Department of Health, not even the police. The police used to have that kind of power but last year, the mayor made a law which banned the police from harassing street vendors and gave the power to the Department of Health.”

He noted that some organisations, including law firms that worked for street vendors, were already showing interest in the case.
Efforts to reach Olafaju as of the time of filing this report proved abortive, as no response followed the messages sent to him via his Facebook and Instagram accounts.

An email sent to the Nigerian Embassy in New York on the situation did not get any response as of the time of filing this report.
Also, calls and messages put across to the phone of the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, were not responded to.

• The businessmen, Anslem Oshionebo and Opeyemi Odeyale and Aleoghena Okhumale pleaded guilty to the charges brought against them by the US Department of Justice.

• Popular Nigerian music star May D was the firm’s brand ambassador

• The fintech firm they operated, Ping Express US LLC, facilitated the remittance of $160 million to Nigeria.

• Some of the funds are said to be proceeds of romance scams

Three Nigerian businessmen – Anslem Oshionebo, Opeyemi Odeyale and Aleoghena Okhumale – have been convicted for money laundering in the United States.

Their fate was sealed after Ping Express U.S. LLC pleaded guilty to failure to maintain an effective anti-money laundering program.

In 2017, the company had announced the signing of Nigerian musical star Akinmayokun Awodumila, popularly known as MayD as a brand ambassador to help preach its services to Africans in diaspora.

In court documents sited by the Afrotimes Newspapers, the Texas company, which transferred millions of dollars from America to Africa, admitted that it failed to play by the rules.Though the firm was licensed to transmit money, it had no approval to conduct currency exchange.

Ping Express charged U.S. customers a fee to remit money to beneficiaries in Nigeria and other countries in the continent.

The company confessed to allowing over 1,500 customers to violate the laws. One customer remitted $80,000 in one single month, more than 17 times the limit.

Ping Express transmitted more than $167million outside America, including $160million to Nigeria, in less than three years.
The firm admitted it failed to request sufficient details about the sources or purposes of the funds involved in the transactions, or the customers.

A customer, Collins Orogun acknowledged accepting a fee in exchange for transferring money for “romance scam” fraudsters and other criminals.

Afrotimes learned that Orogun received at least $1.3million, cashier’s checks, wires into U.S. bank accounts and moved more than $1million to Africa through Ping. The defendant faces up to 20 years in federal prison; his sentencing is set for January 23, 2023.

Ping CEO Oshionebo and Ping COO Odeyale were sentenced to 27 months in prison; IT/Business Development Manager Okhumale got a 42 months jail term.

The company now faces five years of probation and a fine of up to $500,000; sentencing has been set for December 19, 2022.

Christopher Miller, Acting Special Agent in Charge of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Dallas said agents and forensic accountants work to eradicate bulk cash smuggling.

“Our investigative reach provides access to a wide range of financial networks allowing HSI to disrupt any criminal organization attempting to exploit global trade”, Miller noted.

HSI Dallas Field Office conducted the probe in collaboration with the Texas Department of Banking. Assistant U.S. Attorney John de la Garza is the prosecutor.

Crime / Nigerian Man Jailed In UK For Attacking Ex-girlfriend He Accused Of Using Juju by Newphiligeek123: 7:42pm On Jul 11, 2022
A Nigerian father-of-six who attacked his ex-partner believing she cast a voodoo spell on him which caused him weak erection was jailed on Wednesday in Ireland.

As he imposed an eight-year sentence on Rotimi Adeyemo, Mr Justice Fowler revealed the sustained attack involved strangulation, kicks, punches and the use of a knife.

He said the domestic incident was further aggravated as it was carried out in the presence of the woman’s eight-year old daughter, who begged Adeyemo to stop the attack on her mother.

Adeyemo, from Carrickdale Gardens in Portadown, appeared at Belfast Crown Court via a videolink with Maghaberry, where his sentence was divided equally between prison and supervised licence.

He was initially charged with attempted murder, which he denied, but later pleaded guilty to a charge of causing grievous bodily harm to his ex-partner with intent.

She sustained multiple injuries including a collapsed lung, bleeding to the brain and fractures to her ribs, nose and jaw and spent three days in the Royal Victoria Hospital.

The court heard that prior to the attack, which occurred on August 3rd, 2019, the defendant and the accused had been in a relationship which had ended.

Following this break-up, Adeyemo started dating one of the woman’s neighbours which caused acrimony between the former couple.
Crown barrister Barra McGrory QC said that two days before the attack, Adeyemo called at his ex’s home and accused her of casting a voodoo spell on him that had affected his potency.

Saying it was the Crown’s case that this was a “key factor in the offending in terms of motivation”, Mr McGrory said the woman told Adeyemo there was no spell and he should go to see a doctor.

At 7.15am on August 3rd Adeyemo returned to her house and, once inside, he launched an immediate attack which started by him grabbing her by the throat leaving her unable to speak or breathe.

Adeyemo proceeded to carry her by the throat to the kitchen where the attack continued. Threatening to kill her, Adeyemo picked up a knife with his free hand which he used to try to cut her throat.

The woman fought back in an effort to keep the knife from her throat and was put to the floor where the strangulation continued.
At this point she managed to grab a plate and smash it over Adeyemo’s head that caused a bleeding wound, which she later told police caused Adeyemo to “completely lose it”.

The attack continued in the back yard and was seen by neighbours who called the police. It was also witnessed by the woman’s daughter, who begged Adeyemo to stop.

The badly injured woman was also punched and kicked in the face, lost consciousness and came round while being tended to by police on her sofa.

The aftermath of the attack was captured on police body-worn footage and was described as “harrowing” by Mr Justice Fowler.
In this footage, the woman can be seen with serious facial injuries, while Adeyemo was recorded complaining she had put a spell on him to stop his manhood from working.

While the woman was taken to hospital where she treated for multiple injuries, Adeyemo was arrested.
During his interview, he told police his ex-partner was into witchcraft, reiterated the claim about the spell and said he drank half a bottle of Baileys before going to her house.

Mr Justice Fowler said that after reading a Victim Impact Statement, it was clear the violent incident has had a lasting effect on her.
The judge revealed she now avoided going out and had become isolated, installed security cameras so she could feel safe in her own home and now suffered from nightmares.

Mr Justice Fowler said he had considered submissions by defence barrister Gavan Duffy QC.

These included Adeyemo’s clear criminal record, his good work record while living in Northern Ireland for the past 16 years, a complete lack of any prior domestic violence and the remorse he has since displayed.

The judge said he also accepted medical reports which suggest that at the time of the incident, Adeyemo was experiencing a mental health episode. Saying the attack occurred in the woman’s home where she should have felt safe and in the presence of a child, Mr Justice Fowler imposed an eight-year sentence and put in place a five-year restraining order.

Newphiligeek123:
When Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine, 27-year-old Nigerian Ottah Abraham was outraged.

He picked up his phone and tweeted: "I want to join the team." But he was some 8,700km (5,400 miles) away from the front line, in a small apartment in Nigeria's main city, Lagos.

The philosophy graduate is one of several hundred Africans, from countries like Nigeria, Kenya, Senegal, South Africa and Algeria, volunteered to take up arms in the battle against Russia, partly to escape the bleak prospects faced by many young men at home.

"We know that it's war, it's not child's play," he told said. "But being a soldier in Ukraine would be better than being here.
"I'll probably be allowed to stay if the war ends, plus I'll be a hero and fight an undeniable enemy."

Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said that some 20,000 volunteers from across the world had already applied to enlist. They came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made a global appeal for foreign fighters to "come and stand shoulder to shoulder with Ukrainians".

The government temporarily stopped its visa requirements and offered equipment and a salary to those with a valid passport and military training. There has been no official confirmation that foreign fighters will be allowed to stay in the country after the war.

Kereti Usoroh, a Nigerian living in the capital, Abuja, said his motivations for volunteering had nothing to do with financial gain or the prospect of citizenship.

"I already live a comfortable life. If I wanted to go to Europe, I'd do it through education, not war," the 29-year-old lawyer said.
"This is about beating a bully - injustice for one is injustice for all."

Sentiments to gladden the hearts of Ukrainian diplomats and days after President Zelenksy's appeal, scores of hopeful volunteers headed to the Ukrainian embassy in Abuja, with ambitions of enlisting.

But the Ukrainian embassy in Nigeria - like others in Africa - had to back-pedal as many of the continent's governments do not want their nationals to fight in Ukraine.

"Nigeria discourages the use of mercenaries anywhere in the world and will not tolerate the recruitment," Nigeria's foreign ministry wrote in a statement.

Bohdan Soltys, a Ukrainian embassy official in Nigeria, said they were not paying Africans to fight - and people would have to pay for their own flights to reach Europe.

"There's a fine line between foreign volunteers and mercenaries," he told the Afrotimes Newspaper.

Disappointment
For some, like David Osagie Adeleke from Nigeria's south-western Oyo state, this was a devastating blow. The 21-year-old, who has worked as an emergency rescue worker for the Red Cross, had been preparing to enlist as a combatant, having collected the necessary documentation, including a letter of recommendation.

"I went straight to the police station to collect my documents," he said, explaining that a clean criminal record was one of the requirements for enlisting. "I'm disappointed to hear that the embassy is now saying it won't take us Africans."

With his emails to the Ukrainian embassy now bouncing back, he is looking into alternative routes to get to the country's border.
"I've got an interview with the Polish embassy in Nigeria," he said.

Prince Nkem Nduche, who was among those at the Ukrainian embassy in Abuja, has more knowledge than most about the situation in Ukraine and is more optimistic.

He actually spent some time in Russia as a youngster, has dual citizenship and even enrolled at Russia's military academy - but was jailed for a short time, accused of being a spy after he was spotted at the American embassy.

He said he fled the country seven years ago, via Ukraine - and would happily fight against Russia, but accepts it may not be.
"I wanted to go on my own but as the Nigerian government said we can't go… I will obey them," he told Afrotimes News.

Travel / Report: Over 9,000 Nigerians Trek Through Forest Into Canada From U.S (pics) by Newphiligeek123: 8:17pm On Jul 10, 2022
The Canadian government is yet again aggressively trying to limit the number of asylum seekers from Nigeria who are flooding into Canada via the United States, officials said on Monday.

A recent investigation has revealed that over 9,000 Nigerian nationals have trekked through the notorious Roxham Road border into Canada illegally till date. They crossed on foot along a forest trail from New York state to Quebec.

The Canadian government had previously requested that the US authorities tighten their visa rules for Nigerians to try to prevent tourists from flying to the US and then hopping across the border to file Canadian refugee claims. Yet, the number of asylum-seekers entering Canada outside formal land border crossings has now reached its highest point since August 2017.

The increase follows the lifting of a pandemic-era order last December. Recall that since March 2020, border police had refused entry to all asylum-seekers in order to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Between January and February 2022 alone, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police intercepted over 2,500 asylum-seekers crossing the border outside formal land ports of entry, the vast majority crossing into Quebec.

These asylum-seekers often enter Canada because they do not enter at formal border crossings. Under the Safe Third Country Agreement, set to be contested at Canada's Supreme Court, Canada and the United States can turn back asylum-seekers in either direction at formal land border crossings.

'NIGERIANS ARE GETTING MORE DESPERATE'

Nigeria is set to end 2022 with the highest number of asylum seekers to Canada for the sixth year in a row. Nigeria overtook China as the country with the highest claims back in 2016. The country’s hold on the top spot is despite a major slowdown in asylum claim rates given global travel restrictions in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

A survey conducted by the Africa Polling Institute (API), found the key “push factors” for the exodus of Nigerian immigrants to Canada to be due to Nigeria’s poor economy, heightened insecurity, perceived poor governance and Political persecution.

Volunteers who come to the border with water bottles or blankets and who try to ensure border-crossers' rights are respected have resumed their weekly trips to Roxham Road after suspending them during the pandemic, said Frances Ravensbergen, a coordinator for migrant advocacy group Bridges Not Borders.

Some would-be refugees are awaiting on standby in the United States, others are still in Nigeria until they feel they could make the trip to Canada via the United States, Bouchard said.

Many keep abreast of Canada's shifting regulations, "sometimes with some confusion," Bouchard said. But Bouchard thinks there is more than just Canada's lifted border closure at play. "People are desperate," he said.

He said the increase was also an indication that "under (President) Joe Biden the (U.S.) immigration policies have not really, really changed," especially regarding homosexuality refugee claims, which are seen as less likely to succeed in the United States.

U.S. apprehensions of migrants crossing from reached a 20-year high in 2020, and the Biden administration has been reluctant to roll back all the measures imposed by his predecessor Donald Trump.

The U.S. government did not immediately respond to a request by Afrotimes Newspaper for comment.

CANADA’S “OPEN DOORS”

While Canada’s skill-based immigration program offers immediate residency permits and a long-term pathway to citizenship, the country’s perceived openness to immigrants, particularly relative to the US in recent years, means it has also become subject to rising asylum claims as well.

Canada recently announced plans to welcome an additional 1.2 million immigrants over the next three years.

Highlandgee:

When she finally raised the issue of her documents with Precious Izekor, an argument ensued. A few days later, she left the Izekors and went to stay with a friend, who–concerned for the woman–felt she was being exploited and accompanied her to the Home Office.

Believe it or not, this is the genesis of the issue.

An angry mob has attacked the Lisburn, Northern Ireland home of Nigerian husband and wife Osarobo “John” Izekor, 36, and 29-year old Precious Izekor - just hours after they were found guilty of their sickening crimes.

Windows at the front and back of the Ashmount Gardens property were smashed and the couple, who held a Nigerian national as their personal slave, were forced to flee with their three children in the early hours of the morning.

Neighbours described how they packed up their car with as many personal belongings they could manage and drove off under the watchful eye of PSNI officers who attended the scene.

“No one really knows who did it because it was in the middle of the night and it happened so quick but people wanted them out, that’s for sure. “What they did to that poor woman was a disgrace and cruel. It was no surprise that the home was attacked when people realised who they were and what crime they had committed,” one neighbour said.

“It’s a disgrace that they only got two years suspended considering what they did, is that what you call justice? “When I heard the windows being smashed I knew who it was. All the neighbours came out and we watched them pack up and leave,” she said to Afrotimes News.

The couple kept themselves to themselves and never allowed their children to play on the street with other kids. “They never annoyed anyone, very quiet, you would never have really seen them. The first we all knew about them was when we read it in the paper and seen them on the TV.

"It was a matter of time before something happened. You can’t get away with that type of thing here. Any wonder they kept their heads down but it all came out in the end, you can’t hide something like that no matter how hard you try,” another neighbour said.

The couple were forced from their home last week and have since declared themselves as homeless.

Conviction

They were both handed a two-year prison sentence, which was suspended for two years, by Judge Richard Greene QC who ordered them to pay their victim £10,000 in compensation.

Last week’s sentencing at Belfast Crown Court marked one of the first cases brought under the Human Trafficking and Exploitation Act (NI) 2015.

The pair admitted that on dates between September 1, 2016 and September 30, 2017 they ‘required another person to perform forced or compulsory labour’.

While the victim was forced to carry out domestic duties, a majority of the criminality by the Izekors was unpaid childcare in their then Castlereagh Place home in Belfast.

As he sentenced the couple, Judge Greene said that whilst it was accepted the Izekors did not physically ill-treat the women they kept as a domestic slave, they gained financially by not having to pay childcare costs while they worked.

The victim – who is now 33 – arrived in Northern Ireland in 2011 and worked as a nanny for John Izekor’s sister for a five-year period.

When John Izekor’s sister returned to Nigeria in the Autumn of 2016, the woman moved into Castlereagh Place with John and Precious. During this period, she was kept ignorant of her immigration status and was prevented from having access to her passport and paperwork.

While working for the Izekors, the woman had her own room and was given food and clothes but was not paid any money, while a small sum was sent to her family in Nigeria.

When she finally raised the issue of her documents with Precious Izekor, an argument ensued. A few days later, she left the Izekors and went to stay with a friend, who–concerned for the woman–felt she was being exploited and accompanied her to the Home Office.

An investigation was launched which resulted in the involvement of the PSNI and the arrests of John and Precious Izekor, who both admitted the offence.
