PoliticsRe: Statistician-general Faults Nigeria’s Touted 170m Population Figure by Newsi: 4:50pm On Mar 04, 2016
Abagworo:
Nigeria’s estimated 170 million population figure is
incorrect, according to Statistician-General of the
Federation, Dr. Yemi Kale.
Speaking in Abuja at the official launch of Enhanced
General Data Dissemination System (e-GDDS), Kale
said the estimates were speculations, adding that the
nation’s population may be less.
According to him, capturing of the population figures
based on three per cent growth rate since 2006 was
faulty, arguing that the nation was not static but
dynamic.
He stressed further that rather marrying early, many
women now opt for western education.
Kale noted that census figures may have been
inflated in some quarters in the past, giving the
impression that more population of humans resides
in certain areas.
“I believe that those who say that Nigeria has a
population of 170 million are wrong. This is because,
you cannot continue to use the three per cent growth
rate used since 2006 to calculate the current
population. So, you cannot say accurately that
Nigeria’s population is 170 million or more. Certain
cultures like early marriage, which used to be the
norm, are now changing. Women are now embracing
western education more than they did years ago.
That is also a factor to consider.
“What used to happen is that some people gave
wrong census of their population in order to create
the impression that they are more in number. So,
these contributed to the higher number bandied
around often. So, with this, you can see that the
nation’s population cannot have reached 170 million
in the real sense,” he clarified.
Speaking on the newly launched National Summary
Data Page (NSDP), Kale said that the bureau, through
collaboration with the International Monetary Fund
(IMF), Ministry of Finance, office of the Accountant-
General of the Federation and the Central Bank of
Nigeria (CBN), is to host general data information
bank on all aspects of the economy.
The aim, he said, was to make information about any
aspect of the country available to both local and
international users through open data platform on
the NBS website.
The Statistician-General also stressed that publication
of essential macroeconomic data would be published
on the NSDP to provide national policy makers,
investors, domestic and international stakeholders
access to information that would enhance the
economy as well as improve access to timely data on
Nigeria.
He added that the new system would encourage
transparency and improve statistical development in
the country.

PoliticsBreaking: British Opposition MP Pledges Support To Biafra by Newsi(op): 10:23am On Mar 04, 2016
– Angela Rayner MP pledged her allegiance at a protest against the detention of Nnamdi Kanu.

– Support for Biafra is growing among the former imperial power’s MPs.

Another British MP has pledged allegiance to the creation of Biafra!

Standing outside the British parliament in London earlier today, pro-Biafrans held a protest against the detention of Radio Biafra director Nnamdi Kanu. There were joined by Angela Rayner MP, a lawmaker from the opposition left-wing Labour party.

Surrounded by Biafra activists and looking confused, Raynor listens and nods while one man lauds her for speaking up for Kanu and Biafra.

“We want to see you we again. We’d like you to work with us. We are peaceful people” he says.

“But we get disappointed that Britain is now supporting Islam.”

“We no longer know if Britain is a Christian country or if it’s Islamic, we are confused. Tell us which one is Britain; tell us!” the man says, passing the microphone to Rayner.

“I love everybody. What fills my heart full of love is what you people have done despite all that’s happened. You people have protested in a good way, in a Christian way, and are trying to raise your issues legitimately,” Rayner replies.

I have also referred the case to Amnesty International and I will continue.”

“Keep peaceful, keep shouting, and keep up with your cause, ’cause it’s a good one, it’s a true one, and hopefully, God willing, you’ll get peace one day, you’ll get justice!”

The MP’s remarks were met with wild applause by the pro-Biafra protesters, who cheered and chanted furiously in response. “All hail Biafra! All hail Biafra!” they shouted.

Rayner became an MP last year after a long career as a trade unionist and a care worker.

Support for Biafra is growing among British MPs, with Tom Elliot and Danny Kinahan, both MPs for the right-wing Ulster Unionists, tabling a motion last December for the UK to recognise Biafra as an independent country.

However, the motion was only supported by its co-authors and another Labour politician, Yasmin Qureshi.

PoliticsMama Taraba Is Not Nigeria's First Female Governor; See Who Is by Newsi(op): 4:24pm On Nov 07, 2015
This is to correct the error making the rounds among several Nigerian online publications, including Vanguard and Naij.com. Mama Taraba is not Nigeria's first female governor. Th honour belongs to Anambra state's Dame Virgy Etiaba. Check out here profile below, according to Wikipedia:

Dame Virginia Ngozi Etiaba was the Governor of Anambra State, a state in south-central Nigeria, from November 2006 to February 2007. She is the first female governor in Nigeria's history. Her instatement came as the previous governor, Peter Obi, was impeached by the state legislature for alleged gross misconduct. She transferred her powers back to Obi three months later when an appeal court nullified the impeachment.

Etiaba is a native of Ezekwuabor Otolo-Nnewi in Nnewi North Local Council of Anambra State. She was raised by her Uncle Chief Pius Ejimbe from secondary school in Kano Nigeria until she got married to Late Bennet Etiaba of Umudim Nnewi.

For 35 years she worked as a teacher and headed several schools in Kafanchan, Aba, Port Harcourt, and Nnewi. She retired from the services of the Anambra State Government in 1991 and founded the Bennet Etiaba Memorial Schools, Nnewi, of which she was the proprietress. In March 2006 she resigned to assume the position of the Deputy Governor of Anambra State.

She was a member of the Association of Women Entrepreneurs, International Literacy Programme for the Nnewi North Local Council, the Environmental International Vanguard and the World Organization for Early Childhood Education (OMEP). She was also a Synod members of the Church of Nigerian (Anglican Communion), a member of the Christian Association of Nigerian Schools, a member of the Board of Governors of the Okongwu Memorial Grammar School Nnewi, member of the Board of Governors of Holy Child Convent School, Amichi and a Juvenile Court Assessor for the Nnewi Magisterial District.

She is the mother of six adult children of which one is Emeka Etiaba (SAN) who once contested for the governorship seat in Anambra state

PoliticsPope Francis Shuns Nigeria by Newsi(op): 6:10pm On Oct 18, 2015
The 266th and current Pope of the Catholic Church, His Holiness Pope Francis, has shunned Nigeria in his first official trip to Africa.

The pope is said to have decided not to step into Nigeria stemming from numerous attack of Islamist sect, Boko Haram. According to The Vatican, instead of coming to Nigeria, the pope will be visiting Kenya, Uganda and Central Republic. He will be meeting with slum dwellers and refugees. He will also call for dialogue between Christians and Muslims when he visits these three aforementioned African countries next month.

He is billed to have a two-day stay in the state capitals of each of the countries he visits. This is the pope’s first visit to Africa and he is all out to have as many inter-religious meetings as possible. Since his election as the first Latin American pope, Francis has met the most needy on each of his 10 foreign tours. In Nairobi, he will visit Kangemi, a slum that is home to 650,000 people. He will say a Mass at a university in the capital.

In Uganda, Pope Francis is scheduled to pay a visit to the home for the disabled in Nalukolongo while his last stop is Bangui, the capital of the Central African Republic, where the centrepiece of his visit to a country plagued by inter-communal violence is a meeting with Muslim leaders in the Koudoukou mosque.

This adds to the numerous times Nigeria has been sidelined from receiving important international figures. President Barack Obama sidelined the vast nation on his first African trip as head of state in 2009. Instead he visited Nigeria’s shrimp-sized neighbour, Ghana, where he lauded the smaller country’s democratic achievements. Obama also left Nigeria out again in his 2009 visit.

PoliticsNigeria’s UN Mission Embarrasses President Buhari - Sahara Reporters by Newsi(op): 4:21pm On Sep 28, 2015
Nigeria’s notorious Permanent Mission to the United Nations, lead by Ambassador Joy Ogwu, has reportedly mismanaged President Buhari’s official schedule resulting in several missed opportunities and embarrassing moments for the President and his official delegation.

Early Saturday Reuters news agency reported that Nigeria had no official representation at a High Level Meeting on insecurity and displaced people in the Lake Chad Basin region. Nigeria was the only major player not present during the meeting, which was organized by the United Nations Under-Secretary for Humanitarian Affairs Stephen O’Brien, which resulted in international diplomats to say they were disappointed in Nigeria’s conduct.

A Nigerian official speaking on the condition of anonymity with a SaharaReporters correspondent on Saturday said that “at the very least the National Security Adviser should have been present at the meeting.” The NSA Major General (Rtd) Monguno is attached the President Buhari’s official delegation.

The Cable reported today that President Buhari “was also prevented from meeting with Pope Francis because he was not properly briefed by the Nigerian UN mission staff.”

The Cable report continued saying, “the pope delivered a speech at the general assembly on Friday at 10am. Not only was Buhari made to come in late to the meeting because of untidy arrangements, he also took a wrong gate rather than the one reserved for presidents and heads of state. He was subsequently prevented from seeing the pope by security operatives because of his late arrival.”

SaharaReporters spoke with a high level member of President Buhari’s official delegation, who asked that we not use their name, who told our correspondent “the President did have problems with accreditation before the Pope’s speech.” He added “the protocol officers were not adequately briefed.”

SaharaReporters has since learned that protocol and accreditation is the responsibility of Nigeria’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations.

SaharaReporters obtained the official schedule of President Buhari and members of his delegation which did not have the High Level meeting between the Lake Chad Basin official and the top UN Aid Chief Mr. O’Brien.

This same high-level source confirmed to our SaharaReporters correspondent that it was Ambassador Ogwu’s office who developed the schedule and it was her office that chose not to place that High Level meeting on it.

This source told SaharaReporters by phone that “if I had to say it, many members of the [official Nigeria] delegation are not happy. Could things have been better organized? Yes.”

SaharaReporters has also spoke with other members of the delegation who place these blunders on the shoulders of the Nigerian Mission to the UN and Ambassador Joy Ogwu for not adequately briefing the President or coordinating his visit.

This diplomatic debacle seems to be the latest in a series confronting President Buhari and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In July of this year, during President Buhari’s Official State Visit to the United States, hundreds of Nigerians were locked out of their embassy during a public forum—many of whom had official invitations from the embassy. The embarrassing events taking place this weekend at the United Nations comes two weeks after President Buhari announced major shake-ups in the management of foreign missions throughout the world.

SaharaReporters tried repeatedly to contact Ambassador Joy Ogwu and her office however our calls and texts were not immediately answered.
