Celebrities / Jesus Can Never Be A Sacrifice For Sins by newslife: 8:45pm On Oct 23, 2014
If Jesus’ death was a sacrifice, it can only atone for
sins committed before his death. High priests don’t
atone for future sins. I often ask fellow Christians if our sins are forgiven
or if they are paid for. Did Jesus die for our sins or
do we need to repent? Most say it is both, but it
cannot be. If our sins are forgiven, nobody needs
to pay for them. But if our sins are paid for, then we
don’t need to be forgiven. If I owe a man one thousand naira and Jesus pays my debt, then I was
not forgiven the debt. Indeed, if Jesus died for our
sins then God never forgave anyone. Jesus teaches about repentance and the
forgiveness of sins. But Paul talks about blood
payment for sins. Whose report should we
believe? Most Christians disagree with Jesus. Jesus
says God does not desire sacrifices. (Matthew
9:13). But Paul says Jesus sacrificed himself to God for us. (Ephesians 5:2). Whose report should we
believe? Most Christians disagree with Jesus.
Nevertheless, we say Jesus is “the author and
finisher of our faith.” (Hebrews 12:2). Good Shepherd Jesus says: “I am the good shepherd. The good
shepherd gives his life for the sheep.” (John
10:11). This statement is often mistaken as
indicating that Jesus will die as a sacrifice for sins.
However, since the ways of God are not our ways
(Isaiah 55:cool; the good shepherd must not be confused with the typical shepherd. Indeed, the life
of the good shepherd is a deliberate anti-type of
the Mosaic sin-sacrifice. In the typical sacrifice, the life of the sheep is
sacrificed for the shepherd. But Jesus contradicts
this by saying he is the shepherd who gives his life
for the sheep. Obviously, this cannot be about
dying for the sheep for the simple reason that a
dead shepherd is of no use to his sheep. On the contrary, Jesus is talking about living for the sheep.
The good shepherd gives his life for the sheep by
devoting his eternal life to taking care of them.
Without a doubt, it is far more difficult to live for the
sheep than to die for them. Indeed, when you give
your life for someone, you don’t have to die. Jesus’ crucifixion was a one-time event, but his
priesthood as our shepherd is everlasting. Jesus
did not say “the good shepherd will give his life for
the sheep.” Instead, he talks in the present
continuous because he is “the same yesterday and
today and forever.” (Hebrews 13:cool. “The good shepherd gives his life for the sheep.” This shows
Jesus is not talking about Calvary. Jesus remains
our shepherd today and he is still giving his life for
us. The enemy decided to kill the shepherd so that
the sheep would scatter. (Zechariah 13:7).
However, God countered this by raising him from the dead, showing that this shepherd cannot be
sacrificed or killed. Surrendered life Jesus teaches that physical life is inconsequential.
He says: “Do not be afraid of those who kill the
body but cannot kill the soul.” (Matthew10:28).
Therefore, the life he lays down cannot be the
inconsequential life. It must surely be the spiritual
life. Hear him: “My Father loves me because I lay down my life that I may take it again. No one takes
it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power
to lay it down, and I have power to take it
again.” (John 10:17-18). This shows the life Jesus laid down is not his
physical life, as many Christians presume in the
sacrificial atonement fallacy. The physical life was
taken from Jesus against his will. When he was to
be crucified by men, he said to God: “Not my will,
but yours be done.”(Luke 22:42). However, no one took his divine (eternal) life from him. He
voluntarily relinquished this in order to take up a
mortal life on earth. This shows the cross of Jesus was fundamentally
his incarnation. His cross was in laying down his
life in heaven in order to come to earth as a man to
show us the way of salvation. After his earthly
death and resurrection, he took up again his
heavenly life. Ransom not sacrifice Before Jesus went to the cross, he says to his
disciples: “Love each other as I have loved you.” He
then describes his love for them as laying down his
life: “Greater love has no one than this, that he lay
down his life for his friends.” (John 15:12-13). This
love was expressed in the past; before his crucifixion. Therefore, Jesus’ definition of laying
down his life has nothing to do with dying on the
cross. It is about loving others and living a life of
service for them. The laying down of life that Jesus talks about
cannot be about Calvary because he asks his
disciples to lay down their lives also. Surely, it
cannot be said that he was requiring them to die
also as sacrifices for sins, especially since misguided
Christian doctrine says Jesus laid down his life once for all. (Hebrews 10:10). Furthermore, Jesus says to his disciples: “Whoever
wants to become great among you must be your
servant, and whoever wants to be first must be
your slave- just as the Son of Man did not come to
be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a
ransom for many.” (Matthew 20:25-28). This injunction is further proof that the doctrine of
Jesus has nothing to do with sacrifices for sins.
Jesus says he gives his life as a ransom. However, a
ransom is fundamentally different from a sacrifice.
A ransom is not paid as atonement for sins but for
the release of captives. It is not given to God but to kidnappers. Kidnappers are evil, but God is
righteous. Ransoms are paid by the innocent, but
sacrifices are given by the guilty. If Jesus’ death was a sacrifice, it can only atone for
sins committed before his death. High priests don’t
atone for future sins. However, if Jesus’ life is seen
correctly as a ransom, its lessons remain relevant
even to those of us born after his death. Fear of death Satan holds men captive through our love of life.
We sin as we try to save our lives. Therefore, Jesus
warns: “Whoever wants to save his life will lose it,
but whoever loses his life for me will find
it.” (Matthew16:25). Jesus ransomed captives with
his life by allowing himself to be killed; only to rise from the dead. Thereby, he exposed the
counterfeit of death by demonstrating that our fear
of death is baseless. Hebrews says: “Since the children have flesh and
blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by
his death he might destroy him who holds the
power of death- that is, the devil- and free those
who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear
of death.” (Hebrews 2:14-15). The Good Shepherd lays down his life and takes it
up again. Therefore, we can now confidently lay
down our lives, without fear of losing our lives.
Thanks to Jesus: “Our soul has escaped as a bird
from the snare of the fowlers; the snare is broken,
and we have escaped.” (Psalms 124:7).

Celebrities / Women Suggest Sex Strike To End War In South Sudan by newslife: 4:11pm On Oct 23, 2014
A group of South Sudanese women peace activists
has suggested that men in the civil war-torn
country be denied sex until they stop fighting. The suggestion emerged after around 90 women,
including several members of South Sudan’s
parliament, met in the capital Juba this week to
come up with ideas on how to “to advance the
cause of peace, healing and reconciliation”. A key suggestion was to “mobilise all women in
South Sudan to deny their husbands conjugal
rights until they ensure that peace returns,”
organisers said in a statement Thursday. Other proposals included finding ways to meet the
wives of President Salva Kiir and his arch-rival, rebel
chief Riek Machar, to “ask them to join the search
for peace and reconciliation by impressing upon
their husbands to stop the war”. Thousands of people have been killed and almost
two million have fled the fighting between
government troops, mutinous soldiers and tribal
militia forces. Civilians have been massacred, patients murdered
in hospitals and people killed while sheltering in
churches. Almost 100,000 people are sheltering in squalid UN
peacekeeping bases fearing they will be killed if
they leave. Tobias Atari Okori, from the government-backed
South Sudan Peace and Reconciliation Commission,
acknowledged that the idea highlighted that
people were desperate for the war to end. “People are experiencing great suffering, and it is
the women, children and the aged who are
suffering the worst,” he told AFP. The UN special envoy on sexual violence Zainab
Bangura said this month the levels of rape are the
worst she had ever seen. Political and military leaders have repeatedly
broken promises made under intense international
pressure, including during visits to South Sudan by
UN chief Ban Ki-moon and US Secretary of State
John Kerry. Earlier this month, a group of 19 major aid agencies
warned that while massive food drops had helped
avert famine for now, the threat remained and
would continue to worsen the longer the war
continues.

Sports / Dear Wenger, Flex Your Muscles In The Transfer Market, Not On The Touchline by newslife: 6:47am On Oct 07, 2014
March 22, 2014. It is a grand affair for Arsenal.
Long serving manager Arsene Wenger, is set to
take charge of his 1,000th game in charge of
the Gunners. It is a landmark occasion by every
scale.
The party did not end well. Jose Mourinho and
his gang inflicted a 6-0 thumping on 10-man
Arsenal. It was Mourinho’s biggest Premier
League victory as Chelsea manager. It was also
the first time in Chelsea’s history that they put
six past their London rivals.
In the end, though, it counted for nothing. For
Chelsea that is. Mourinho endured a trophyless
season, while Aaron Ramsey’s delicate outside-
of-the boot flick ended Arsenal’s barren run
without silverware.
The Portuguese was very aware of what just
happened. And he acted swiftly. I am a huge
Mourinho fan. For all his uncouth nature, he is
very pragmatic and proactive. Hardly dithers.
And he did not. Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas
had signed for the Blues by the end of the 2014
World Cup. Mourinho knew exactly what was
missing in his team and sorted it out.
Wenger did not do badly though. Alexis Sanchez
arrived from Barcelona, while Mathieu Debuchy
was bought as Bacary Sagna’s replacement.
However, the Frenchman failed to buy a proper
defensive midfielder and a replacement for
Thomas Vermaelen. Like I have tweeted
severally, those two decisions might cost him
dear this season.
October 5, 2014. It’s another London derby.
Chelsea welcome Arsenal to Stamford Bridge. Of
course, we are not expecting them to blow the
Gunners away like they did. But for some
brutally honest Gooners like me, we know that a
draw will be a miracle.
It was a simple affair really.
Twinkle-toed Eden Hazard slalomed through the
heart of Wenger’s team and drew a foul from
Laurent Koscielny. Martin Atkinson had an easy
call to make. Penalty. The Belgian dusted
himself and coolly put the home side in front.
Imagine a player in the mould of Nemanja
Matic, allowing Hazard all the time and space to
dance through the middle. Just imagine.
While Arsenal huffed and puffed, passing for
fun, Mourinho introduced another defensive
midfielder in Mikel Obi (oh yes, he is a DM!
Forget he masquerades as an attacking player
for the Super Eagles). His plan was simple. Mikel
Obi would sit along with Matic and give Fabregas
room to create.
It worked a treat.
The former Gunners skipper lifted a pass
through for Costa to expertly steer it past
Woijiech Szczensy. Game over.
It was a limp performance from Arsenal. But
their manager offered more fight on the
touchline. When Gary Cahill drove through
Sanchez, Wenger tried to get a good view and
ended up flinging handbags with Mourinho.
Let’s be honest. When it comes to a wrestling
match, Wenger might crush Mourinho. But when
it is comes to speed and efficiency in transfer
dealings and tactics, there is only one clear
winner here. And we know who.
Religion / Pope Accepts Bishop’s Resignation After Affair With Married Parishioner by newslife: 8:25pm On Oct 06, 2014
Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of a
British bishop who stood down after admitting
to an affair with a married parishioner, the
Vatican said on Monday.
“The Holy Father Francis has accepted the
resignation of Bishop Kieran Conry from the
dioceses of Arundel and Brighton,” a statement
said.
Conry, 64, had said in a letter to his
parishioners that he had veered from the
precepts of the Catholic church but underscored
that his actions “were not illegal and did not
involve minors.”
According to reports in the British press, Conry,
who was appointed by Pope John Paul II in 2001
as bishop of Arundel and Brighton in southeast
England, had an affair with a married woman.
The affair was exposed when the estranged
husband of the woman hired a private detective
to follow his wife when their marriage broke
down.
The Archbishop of Southwark Peter Smith has
been named the Apostolic Administrator of the
diocese until a new bishop takes up the office.
The head of the Catholic church in England and
Wales, Vincent Nichols, said it was a “difficult
and sad moment”.

Family / Let Us Talk About The Timing Of Sex by newslife: 8:06pm On Oct 06, 2014
Hello dearest readers, how’s your weekend
been? Today’s topic came about from a
conversation I had with some amazing friends a
couple of weeks ago. It was about whether sex
on a Monday morning is ideal/acceptable or not.
Most of us did not see anything wrong in it
while a couple others thought it was wrong and
as close to an abomination as one can get. The
argument against having sex on Mondays was
because it sets the wrong tone for the week and
also because it could signify joblessness or
thoughtlessness. The arguments for, disagreed.
We felt sex should have no time-tables
whatsoever but should be indulged in by
couples whenever the need arises, including
Monday mornings before heading out to work.
Bearing in mind that there are different strokes
(pun unintended) for different folks, in my own
opinion I think there shouldn’t be any
restrictions or barriers when it comes to sex
between adults. I think restraints (well, not
physical ones for those into that sort of thing)
suck out the fun of spontaneity that should
come with the act. I believe sex is a beautiful
thing that should be thoroughly enjoyed by both
parties engaging in it.
Imagine a scenario where you have laid rules
about the when and how of going at it, and one
half of a couple gets an itch before the set
time, what happens then? I could tell you a
number of things that could happen as a result,
but that’s not for this post. Thus, I think people
should indulge in sex without necessarily putting
barriers to it. I recall someone told me
something once and I found it very shocking and
bizarre. She had had a horrible experience
whilst bearing her first child and so in a bid not
to have a second child, she made a sex time-
table for her hubby. They had sex only a couple
of times, every three weeks!!! I tried to
educate her about contraceptives and even
counting her cycle so the “sex ban” would be
narrowed down to her unsafe period but she
wasn’t having none of it. I tried to make her see
how she might be unwillingly pushing her hubby
out into the arms of a willing female(s), but she
was beyond understanding at the time. I rested
my case, even though the thought still bothers
me every now and then.
When you consider how hectic Mondays are at
work and the traffic you have to plough through
to get there, I’d say one for the road on such a
morning will certainly keep you well relaxed and
prepared for the day ahead. Remember,
continuous communication, understanding and
compromise are keys to happier relationships.
I’m #TeamNoSexRestrictions, but of cause “ to
each man his own” .
