@NAIRATREND The House of Representatives is currently in commotion as the lawmakers debate the legality or otherwise of having June 12 to be the nation’s democracy day. President Buhari yesterday announced that May 29th will no longer be the recognised day of democracy but rather June 12th, the day MKO Abiola won the election in 1993, will now be recognised as democracy day. The matter has been referred to Committees on Justice, Rules and Business, to advice the House for proper decision on the matter. @NAIRATREND Videos of SARS officers allegedly disrupting the party of singer, Jaywon last night, has been making the rounds on social media. The videos were actually shared by rapper, Ruggedman and MC Makopolo. *** reached out to Jaywon to get the gist of what happened and according to one of his managers, Derek, the video making the rounds on social media is actually not the true picture. According to Derek, a guest at the party got drunk and was misbehaving outside the singer's premises. Members of the estate who were unomfortable with the noise the drunk guest was making alerted the estate security who in turn alerted SARS officers to take the drunk guest out of their estate. Jaywon came out and was able to mediate in the matter. He took his drunk guest back into his compound. Derek says this is what transpired last night. @NAIRATREND The Super Eagles of Nigeria has dropped one place from 47th position to 48th in the latest FIFA world ranking ahead of the 2018 World Cup. The latest ranking was released on Thursday on the website of the football governing body. In Africa, Super Eagles also dropped from sixth place to seventh. This could not be far from the fact that the three time African champions have lost three of their last five games. The Super Eagles also lost 17 points from last month’s 635. They are now on 618. Incidentally, none of Nigeria’s group opponents at the Russia 2018 World Cup rose in the ranking. Argentina remain fifth in the world, while Croatia who the Super Eagles will face in their opening 2018 FIFA World Cup game dropped two places from 18th to 20th. World Cup debutants Iceland remained 22nd. Germany remain in first position, Brazil in second, Belgium in third, Portugal fourth and Argentina fifth. In sixth place are Switzerland, France are seventh, Poland moved up three spots from 10th to eighth while Chile retain their ninth position and Spain completing the top ten ranked teams. @NAIRATREND Yesterday, the federal executive council approved two executive orders and five amendment bills to remove value-added tax on residential properties and amend the company income tax law. Kemi Adeosun, the minister of finance, said the amendments will reduce the tax burden on Nigeria and boost ease of doing business. The two approved executive orders are: Value Added Tax Act (Modification) Order and Review of Goods Liable to Excise Duties and Applicable Rate Order while the five Amendment Bills include the Companies Income Tax Act (Amendment) Bill and Value Added Tax Act (Amendment) Bill. Others are Customs, Excise, Tariff ETC (Consolidation) Act (Amendment) Bill; Personal Income Tax Act (Amendment) Bill and Industrial Development (Income Tax Relief) Act (Amendment) Bill. She said the approval is based on a report by the national tax policy implementation committee on tax laws reform. Adeosun said the new tax policies would remove obsolete, ambiguous and contradictory provisions in the laws, increase government revenue and simplify the process of paying taxes and doing business. “Majority of the provisions approved today are actually removing the tax burden and clarifying obsolete and ambiguous areas of tax. So for example for VAT there is to be an exemption for residential property, leases on rental, transport for the general public and life insurance. These are areas that previously were VAT-able and what was approved today was that these areas should be removed, then, they shouldn’t be subject to VAT. In the short term, of course, that means a revenue loss for the government. But we think in the long run that is the right thing to do is improving ease of doing business and reducing the tax burden on our people which is really one of the objectives of this government.” She disclosed that the government was proposing an amendment to the company income tax aimed at reducing the Right of Tax on micro, small and medium enterprises (SME) from 20% to 15%. Adeosun said the council approved N1.6billion for the procurement of 68 anti-smuggling vehicles for the Nigeria Customs Service. “The operational vehicles currently available for the NCS is grossly inadequate for effective anti-smuggling activities. The need to effectively patrol the borders of the country, enhance Customs’ bid to suppress smuggling and increase revenue collection gave rise to the request to purchase 68 operational vehicles.” SOURCE- https://nairatrend.com.ng/fg-to-remove-vat-on-residential-properties-as-it-amends-company-income-tax-law/ Share #Nairatrend

@NAIRATREND An Abuja chief magistrate’s court in Wuse has granted leave to Senator Dino Melaye (APC, Kogi) to travel to the United States for an appointment with his doctor. Melaye was arraigned before the court on May 2d on charges bordering on his alleged escape from a police vehicle in Abuja on April 24th. At the resumed hearing yesterday June 6th, his counsel, John Odubela (SAN) asked the court to order the Commissioner of Police, FCT command to release Melaye’s international passport to enable him travel for medical treatment abroad which had previously been scheduled before his faceoff with the police. Odubela told the court that Melaye is an asthmatic patient and his health conditions had deteriorated. A medical report from the National Hospital was attached as Exhibit DM3 disclosing the defendant’s health condition. He said following treatment at the US hospital, Melaye has another appointment at the hospital on June 28. In her ruling, the presiding magistrate, Mabel Segun-Bello said that since Dino's medical condition existed before the case was filed and the appointment at the hospital abroad predated the trial, there was no need for a referral letter. She ordered that the international passport should be released to the defendant and that he is to be out of the country for treatment for a period of 20 days (June 18 to July 8 2018). He was ordered to return the international passport to the custody of the Commissioner of Police of the FCT upon his return.
