Samuel Adegboyega University in Ogwa, Edo has conferred an honorary doctorate degree in Public Administration on Gov. Rauf Aregbesola of Osun state.


The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Ben Aigbokhan at a special convocation held on Saturday extolled the qualities of Aregbesola, which he said stood him out for the honorary degree.
Aigbokhan said the good leadership qualities of the governor had placed his state among the top five with lowest unemployment rate in the country.
“Osun is also second in human capital development in Nigeria,’’ he said.
He assured that the university would continue to do its best in promoting healthy tradition, within available resources.


The vice-chancellor said the university was committed to producing globally relevant, competitive and entrepreneurship-minded graduates.
In his remarks, Aregbesola thanked the university for the honour and advised government at all levels to commit resources to funding education even if it would require borrowing.
Also speaking, Gov. Godwin Obaseki of Edo urged Aregbesola to continue his humanitarian work, adding that the award symbolised unity in Nigeria, given that the recipient is a Muslim.

A 27-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the death of several women he met on dating websites.
According to a report by ABC7, the alleged serial killer has been identified as Danuel Drayton.
Drayton was arrested by the LAPD after being linked to several rape and murder cases.
Investigators believe Drayton uses dating websites to hook up with unsuspecting women who he rapes and sometimes murders.
Authorities claim investigations have linked Drayton to as much as seven murders with the pattern being the same.
Drayton, who hails from Connecticut, was arrested after being found wanting in the murder of a practicing nurse who was found in her New York City home on July 17, 2018.
The nurse was identified as 29-year-old Samantha Stewart.
It was further reported that the police said Stewart was reported dead after being in close contact with a man she met on dating app: Tinder.
Drayton is currently behind bars with his bail set at $1.25 million after he was arrested in North Hollywood on Tuesday, July 24, 2018 for attempted murder, penetration with a foreign object, and false imprisonment, after a woman was found locked up and battered in the area.

A Chinese woman Li Dandan, was on Thursday, July 26, found not guilty of drug trafficking by Hong Kong Court after three years of uncertainty.

Hong Kong prosecutors said the single mother, now 33, had trafficked 1,934 grams of methamphetamine, a drug more commonly known as Ice, worth HK$580,000 (US$73,900).

On November 7, 2015, Li was intercepted at Hong Kong International Airport while en route to Malaysia to help deliver clothing samples for her Nigerian boyfriend identified as IK, who said he would set up business in her home province of Guangdong.

The drugs were found stored in a hidden compartment sewn into the linings of her backpack.
However, the Guangzhou native claimed she had been conned to make deliveries for her Nigerian boyfriend, whom she had trusted.
“I dated this Nigerian man because he did not smoke or drink. He struck me as a hardworking person. I could not believe he was a drug trafficker.”

Meanwhile, Li’s counsel, Leung Chun-keung, argued it was possible his client did not know about the hidden compartment as she was not professionally trained like customs officers to detect abnormalities in bag linings.

In these photos taken yesterday, Li Dandan pulled her mother in a tight embrace as soon as she emerged from a Hong Kong court’s cell holding unit, free at last from a drug trafficking case hanging over her head for three years.
Beside them stood prison chaplain Father John Wotherspoon, who had waited anxiously for Li’s release, having spent the past two years helping the Guangzhou native prove her innocence.

“I’m very happy,” he said tearfully after learning of Li’s acquittal. “I’m hoping her case can help the other drug mules appeal.”
Wotherspoon since 2013 has been working on a “name and shame” project, identifying and exposing drug lords operating through and in the city. His efforts came as he travelled the world to help drug mules facing trial.
Wotherspoon said Li was highly vulnerable in light of her divorce.

“So when he offered her a relationship, she trusted him,” he said. “She thought he was a real boyfriend.”
To help prove her innocence, Wotherspoon travelled to Malaysia, Bangkok, Thailand, and Guangzhou to track down IK, with the Nigerian’s picture in hand.

He visited the restaurant and hotel where they stayed together, found his address in Malaysia, and passed on the information to Hong Kong police. At trial, he testified for the defence as a character witness.
The Roman Catholic priest claimed about 20 mainland women had fallen victim to African drug lords over the past decade – and Li was one of them.

The Coordinator of the Kwara State Chapter of Buhari Support Group (BSG), Alhaji Mashood Bakare has formally resigned his appointment.
Bakare, a member of the State House of Assembly, announced his resignation on Thursday, at the floor of the House. Although he did not say it, the development might not be unconnected with the defection of several legislators, including two senators and six House of Representatives members from the state, from the All Progressive Congress (APC).
The former State Coordinator of BSG, representing Omupo Constituency, said his decision was based on personal reason, pointing out that, he had already tendered his resignation letter, to the group, informing it of his decision to relinquish his position.
He disclosed that he assumed the position in 2014, stressing that he was no longer, willing to be part of the organisation. The Legislator explained that communal interest supersedes any parochial consideration, assuring that he would continue to be sensitive to the yearnings and aspirations of his people.
Reacting, the Speaker, Dr. Ali Ahmad, enquired, if the decision to relinquish his post was willingly taken, and answered in affirmation. Ahmad then enjoined politicians to always be sensitive to the yearnings and aspirations of their people, to further make democracy more meaningful to average Nigerians.

A Turkish court sentenced a man to 15 years in prison on July 11 for kissing his daughter on the lips while the prosecutor demanded his acquittal.
According to the court files seen by daily Hürriyet, a woman, who was unidentified, had filed for divorce from her husband claiming he had cheated on her.
The Ankara First Family Court ruled for divorce in December 2017, while entrusting the custody of the couple’s two daughters to the mother.
Seeking his help to do her homework, the couple’s 11-year-old daughter called her father to their home on March 9, 2018 with the permission of her mother.
After her father left the house, the girl told her mother her father had kissed her on the lips, which led the woman to file a criminal complaint against him.
“I had called my father to come to our home. He kissed me on my lips and I felt bad. He had also kissed me on my lips when I was sleeping with him at my aunt’s house. It was not a long kiss. When I reacted angrily, he had told me I was his daughter,” the girl told the police, adding she believed the man had no bad intentions and his hug was “like the hug of her mother.”
In his testimony at the Ankara Sixth Heavy Penal Court, the man said he had not engaged in any abusive acts against his daughter and argued the woman’s criminal complaint could be “an attempt at revenge” in their
divorce case.
The prosecutor demanded his acquittal, citing there was no evidence against the father, but the court ruled for a 15-year jail sentence, stressing the mother and daughter’s testimonies were enough evidence.

While speaking when she was paraded by the Police in Lagos on Monday, a 20-year-old self-confessed sniper of the dreaded Eiye confraternity, Mariam Abiola, revealed how she killed four rival gang members in the Ilasamaja area of the state.
The young girl who admitted dropping out of school in SS3, was arrested on Monay morning together with three male accomplices by a police team from the Ilasamaja division, led by the Divisional Police Officer, Chief Superintendent Titilayo Oriyomi.
While making her confessions to police interrogators, she said it was easier for her to operate unnoticed wearing a hijab, adding that a member of her gang she described as an herbalist always prepared charms for her before she embarked on any major operation.
She narrated, "I was arrested early last year in Mushin. I had run away from my parents’ home in Abeokuta, Ogun State, when I was 15 years. After I fled to Lagos in search of work, I was staying with one brother Wasiu, who is also a gang member. Another brother, Sadiq, said he would introduce me to a job that would be fetching me money.
"He said I needed to blend into the system by being a member of the Eiye confraternity. I agreed. Thereafter, Sadiq taught me how to use a gun. By the time I went through training three times, I knew how to fire.

“Anytime I was going to kill, Sadiq would give me the person's picture and send the address to my phone. I usually wore a white male flowing gown and white hijab whenever we were going to kill any rival member.
"We always went in a group of four, including Wasiu and Segun. The gun was usually tucked inside my white flowing gown. On getting to the target's house, which was usually at night, other members would jump through the fence and open the gate for me. I would enter and fire the person in the chest and forehead before leaving there.
“I have killed four persons. None of our targets survived. I killed one guy at Fadeyi area of Lagos. Another one at Hassan area, one at Ajeh area. At the end of each killing, Sadiq would pay me N10,000 and five others N20,000.
"I had struck at Fabiyi, Hassan and Aje streets and another street, all in Ilasamaja. Before we leave for any killing, we would visit the herbalist who would give us charms to put residents to sleep until the operation is concluded. I never felt bad killing anybody."
Meanwhile, Sadiq also admitted being a member of the Eiye confraternity but denied knowing Abiola.
Speaking on the arrest, Lagos State commissioner of police, CP Imohimi Edgal said, "It is shocking to see a young lady of Abiola's age talk of killings. Parents should do more by monitoring their children.
"It is worrisome that her confession are startling, chronicling the number of killings. Apart from being an assassin, she was also an armourer for her gang.”

At least 15 people, including the shooter, have been shot near a restaurant in the Canadian city of Toronto.


Toronto police confirmed that a woman had died and 13 others were injured after a shooting on Sunday evening. Among the injured is a young girl in critical condition.

Police confirmed that the shooter had been killed after an exchange of gunfire with police.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene in Toronto’s Riverdale neighbourhood near Danforth and Pape Avenues around 10pm on Sunday night.

All those injured have been taken to local hospitals. Witness Jody Steinhauer has told CBC she was at a restaurant on Danforth Avenue with her family when she heard what sounded like 10 to 15 firecracker blasts.



Toronto has been grappling with a sharp rise in gun violence this year. Deaths from gun violence in the city jumped 53 percent to 26 so far in 2018 from the same period last year, with the number of shootings rising 13 percent.


Toronto deployed about 200 police officers from July 20 in response to the recent spate in shootings, which city officials have blamed on gang violence.

A 52-year-old father of four, Henry Oboh, who was recently arrested by men of the Cross River State Police Command for allegedly defiling a 12-year-old girl in a community known as ‘One Man’ in the Akamkpa Local Government Area of the state, has blamed spiritual forces for his misconduct.
Oboh allegedly dragged his victim into his room and threatened her with a kitchen knife before having canal knowledge of her.
While parading the Oboh before newsmen, the state Commissioner of Police, Hafiz Inuwa, said Oboh had dragged the victim into his room when her parents were not around.
“On June 6, 2018 at about 21.25 hours, one Faith Sunday, a 12-year-old female of One Man village in Akamkpa LGA reported at Akamkpa Police Division that on June, 2, 2018 at about 13.18 hours, one Henry Oboh, of the same address, dragged her to his room when her parents were away. He threatened to stab her with a table knife and thereafter had unlawful carnal knowledge of her. The case was transferred to the CIID on June 11, 2018 for discreet investigation. The suspect has confessed in his statement and will be charged to court at the conclusion of the investigation,” Inuwa said.
When intterogated, Oboh said he deeply regrets his action.
“Some forces pushed me to have sex with the small child. I was not myself and how I did that I cannot explain. I never planned to have sex with her. Something pushed me all of a sudden and that was why I immediately surrendered myself when the police came to arrest me. I am ready to face the consequences of what I have done. I am seriously regretting what I did. I am a mechanic. I am married with four children.” he said.

Two African women said to be hookers were arrested on famed red-light area, Bangla Road in Patong, Phuket, Thailand on Saturday. after it was found they had overstayed their visas.
However, no details on how long the women had overstayed or how they managed to fund their stays has been forthcoming.
Patong Police Deputy Chief Lt Col Jessada Sangsuree confirmed the arrest of the two women following a report titled ‘Suppressing Human Trafficking and Alien Overstaying’ issued on Thursday, July 19 and addressed to Patong Police Chief Col Anocha Jindamane.
The report noted that Patong Police officers Lt Nikorn Chuthong and Lt Narubodin Pangsenson had placed two women under arrest while the officers were on patrol and “checking areas” along Bangla Rd.
The two women were named as Shaniyah Nyongonga, 31, and Latifah Hazziwa, 28, said to be from Uganda
Nyongonga was arrested and charged for illegally staying in the country after her permit-to-stay had expired, while Hazziwa was arrested and charged for illegally entering the country and for staying in the country without permission.
“We are worried that more and more women are coming here to Phuket, especially Patong, and are doing the same like this,” Col Jessada guardedly told The Phuket News.
“The same is happening in other areas like Pattaya. They arrive as if on a vacation, but stay longer,” he added.

A 10 year-old girl in Somalia, has died from Female Genital Mutilation, FGM, according to new reports.
FGM, which is sometimes called female circumcision, can ktake many forms but often includes the removal of the clitoris and some parts of the labia.
Experts say it can cause lifelong health problems, including dangerous complications in childbirth.
Last week, a Somali activist announced that a 10-year-old Central Somalia girl died, following what she said was the direct result of an FGM procedure.
Hawa Aden Mohamed, executive director of a Somalian Non-governmental Organization known as Galkayo Education Center for Peace and Development , said in a statement that “the circumciser is suspected to have cut an important vein in the course of the operation.” The girl died two days later.
The executive director of the NGO which advocates for women said:
“The woman who performed the operation has not been arrested, but even if she was, there is no law that would ensure she is punished for the act.
This is just one among many cases happening on a daily basis across Somalia.” Reuters report.

US President Donald Trump, under fire over his Helsinki summit with Vladimir Putin, doubled down Thursday by saying he looks forward to meeting the Russian leader again — with talks already underway for a visit to Washington in the fall.

Trump has come in for bipartisan criticism for what many saw as his unsettling embrace of the Russian strongman this week — and his seeming disavowal of his own intelligence agencies and their assessment that Moscow meddled in the 2016 election.

The backlash has thrust Trump onto the defensive, leading to days of conflicting statements from both the president and the White House.

But Trump has largely shrugged off the criticism and took aim at the “fake news media” Thursday for failing to recognize his achievements.

“The Summit with Russia was a great success, except with the real enemy of the people, the Fake News Media,” Trump said on Twitter. “The Fake News Media wants so badly to see a major confrontation with Russia, even a confrontation that could lead to war.”

In an interview with CNBC television, Trump said “getting along with President Putin, getting along with Russia’s a positive, not a negative.

“Now with that being said if it doesn’t work out I’ll be the worst enemy he’s ever had,” he said of Putin.

“I look forward to our second meeting so that we can start implementing some of the many things discussed,” Trump said.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said that meeting may come this fall.

“President Trump asked (National Security Advisor John Bolton) to invite President Putin to Washington in the fall and those discussions are already underway,” Sanders tweeted.

The invitation came as an apparent surprise to the Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats when he was told about it during a live interview at the Aspen Security Forum in Aspen, Colorado.

“Say that again?” Coats asked the interviewer.

“OK. That’s going to be special,” he said, laughing.

‘I don’t know what happened’
Coats also said that three days after Trump met with Putin he does not know what the two men discussed.

“I don’t know what happened in that meeting,” he said.

The two leaders held two hours of closed-door talks with no one else present but the interpreters.

“If he had asked me how that ought to be conducted, I would have suggested a different way,” Coats said.

Trump on Thursday listed the topics discussed as “stopping terrorism, security for Israel, nuclear proliferation, cyber attacks, trade, Ukraine, Middle East peace, North Korea and more.”

The top Senate Democrat, Chuck Schumer, had a scathing reaction to news that Trump planned to invite Putin to Washington.

“Until we know what happened at that two hour meeting in Helsinki, the president should have no more one-on-one interactions with Putin. In the United States, in Russia, or anywhere else,” he said in a statement.

The US upper chamber issued a sharp rebuke to Trump earlier in the day, voting 98-0 to oppose any move by his administration to make US officials available for questioning by Russian government officials.

Asked in Helsinki whether he would extradite 12 Russian intelligence agents indicted in the United States for hacking Democratic Party computers, Putin said he could meet the US government “halfway.”

Putin said he would permit the 12 to be questioned inside Russia if the United States allowed Russia to question former US envoy to Russia Michael McFaul and 11 others in Moscow’s case against billionaire investor and human rights activist William Browder, the driving force behind Magnitsky Act sanctions on Russian officials passed by the US Congress.

Trump initially called it an “incredible offer,” but McFaul and others expressed outrage and the White House — just minutes before the Senate vote — made clear a deal with Putin was not in the cards.

“It is a proposal that was made in sincerity by President Putin, but President Trump disagrees with it,” Sanders said.

“Hopefully President Putin will have the 12 identified Russians come to the United States to prove their innocence or guilt,” she added.

‘Misjudging Putin’
The indictments of the 12 Russians were issued by special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating possible collusion between Trump’s campaign and Russia.

According to opinion polls published Thursday, a large majority of Americans disapproved of Trump’s handling of the summit — but members of his party approved by a wide margin.

While just one third of Americans approved of Trump’s handling of the Putin summit, that number rose to 68 percent among Republicans, according to a CBS poll.

Among Republicans expressing concern was Senator Lindsey Graham, a prominent voice on foreign policy.

Trump wasn’t “prepared as well as he should have been” for the meeting, Graham said, adding that it is “imperative that he understand that he is misjudging Putin.”

In Moscow, Putin slammed Trump’s domestic opponents as “pathetic, worthless people” who were “ready to sacrifice Russian-American relations for their own ambitions.”

In a toughly-worded speech to Russian diplomats, Putin said US-Russia ties were by “some parameters” worse than during the Cold War.
